1Password for Mac and Windows

Automatically Generate and Store Strong Passwords

"1password is a super useful product. I use it all the time. I'm far more secure with it than without it." -- Jason Fried, founder of 37Signals

"Strong passwords; Don't use the same pw or pattern anywhere; Lie on security questions; Practical way to do this: @1Password." -- Evan Williams, Founder of Twitter

Password management has evolved from using your anniversary date, pet name, or favorite band. Nowadays, you need to come up with passwords that are hard to crack. Special characters, minimum number of characters, uppercase, lowercase, numbers -- these days passwords are hard to crack, but they're also impossible for you to remember! But before you resort to a pen and paper log, give 1Password a try!

1Password can create strong and unique passwords for you, store them securely, and retrieve them quickly-all right in your web browser and at the click of your mouse! Even keyloggers won't be able to figure out your passwords, since having 1Password installed means never typing your credentials ever again!

This is so easy! Just pull up 1Password and take a look at the Go & Fill menu. Select one of your saved logins, and POOF! 1Password takes you to the site, fills out your username and password for you, and logs in you in. That's it! All of your sensitive data remains safely encrypted, whether stored locally on your computer or synced optionally with a cloud storage service like Dropbox.

1Password isn't just limited to username and password validation! You can also fill out contact forms with a single click, or store information for multiple credit cards to make online shopping that much easier!

O I I just tried the 1Password on Windows 7 and I'm impressed especially with the Firefox add-on. 1Password looks like a good product and good deal on BDJ.

However, I want to ask the following questions:

1. I don't see upgrade options on your store. Should I purchase a full license to upgrade 1Password Mac/Win to the next major release?
2. I want to sync databases, between my home and work Windows machines, but using a secure USB flash drive (not Dropbox). Can I just merge two agilekeychain databases?
3. I need to open certain Login locations in IE instead of Firefox which is my default browser. Can I do this? (In KeePass I can enter cmd://{INTERNETEXPLORER} "URL").
4. I want to shrink the 1Password dialog as small as possible, but the Toolbar seems to block this. Can I customize Toolbar (use small icons, hide it, hide groups, etc.)?
5. I see that Titles of entries are stored in clear text. Thus someone may see all sites that have login info. Is that a bug?
6. Help states that you use AES-128 encryption, why not AES-256?

Thanks,
Feb 19 2011 at 10:12am
Agile Team Hi, O I.

If you have a 1Password for Windows license and want to add 1Password for Mac reasonably soon afterwards, we can usually help with that. Just contact us at support@agile.ws.

1Password currently doesn't include a "merge" feature. Even if it did, it wouldn't provide true sync'ing, but a one-time, manual "snapshot" of your 1Password data that you'd have to remember to maintain on separate platforms. On a related note, 1Password for Mac doesn't support storing your data on a removable drive. We offer Dropbox as the automatic, hands-free way to share and sync your 1Password data among all your Macs, PCs, and mobile devices (iOS, Android, and Windows Phone 7).

1Password doesn't support item-specific browser preferences. In 1Password for Windows, you specify the browser with which you want to open all your Logins when triggered from within the program. Of course, you can always launch a specific browser, and then press Ctrl+\ to invoke 1Password's "go and fill login" function.

The 1Password dialog box that appears when you click the 1P button in your browser's toolbar, like the 1Password program window, has a fixed set of tools in the toolbar.

The only fields that are unencrypted are those that are accessible through the history function of your browser, anyway. There's been a lot of discussion of this design decision, lately, and we're considering additional options in some future release of our 1Password products. At present, we recommend simply not storing confidential data (like usernames) in the titles of your Logins and other saved items.

Googling for "128-bit AES vs 256-bit AES" I found explanations that the Earth hasn't existed for as many years as it would take to crack 128-bit encryption.

For both of these security-related questions, you may find this article informative:
http://help.agile.ws/1Pas...urity.html

I hope that helps, O I.

But this offer is the 1Password Mac + Windows bundle.

Thanks.
Feb 19 2011 at 2:51pm
O I Hello David,
Thank you for your answers.

My first question was if a paid upgrade will be available when you release the next major release of 1Password. I don't see any upgrade options on your store i.e. from v1 or v2 to v3 for Mac, so that's why I asked that.

As of syncing of my home and work databases through a USB flash drive, I found that if I sort keys by "Modified" column I will be able to update recently changed items manually. In this case I miss the option to open two instances of 1Password for Windows, but may be 1PasswordAnywhere will help here. Also, I'm not sure why Export and Copy commands are disabled for non-login entries.

Anyway, I decided to switch from KeePass to 1Password mainly due to the browser integration of 1Password.

Thanks,
Feb 20 2011 at 4:39am
Agile Team Hi, O I.

There should be an upgrade option for 1Password for Mac in our online store (https://agilewebsolutions...e/standard). 1Password for Windows is too new to have a version to upgrade *from*, though. :D When there's a 2.0 release, I feel sure there'll be an upgrade option for it and, presumably for the bundle, too.

We believe sync'ing is the most convenient solution for the greatest number of 1Password users, which is why we're so happy with Dropbox, at this time. There are some technical reasons why 1Password for Mac can't store its data on a removable drive, not to mention the fact that it would make Dropbox sync'ing impossible.

1Password for Mac has robust and complete import and export capabilities, but import and export in 1Password for Windows is currently limited to Logins and in only a few file formats. We realize that's an inconvenience to many customers, and even a roadblock to some. I don't have any information at this time about when such an improvement might become available, though.

Agile Team Stephane, there are no plans to create a "portable" version of the 1Password executable. You can read about what to do when you're away from your computer in this article from the "FAQ" section of the user's guide:

http://help.agile.ws/1Pas...om-PC.html

1Password is intended to help you fill and submit forms (typically login forms) in your web browser. 1Password does include a nifty auto-type feature that might help you fill other forms, as described in this article, also from the "FAQ" section of the user's guide:

http://help.agile.ws/1Pas...-type.html

I hope that helps.

Frank Stephens I'm looking for 64-bit support, I would prefer to use 64-bit browsers on a 64-bit OS. The support for mobile devices and Dropbox are nice features, but basic browser integration is lacking. I'm presently using Sticky Password (32-bit only at present), which automatically fills out login forms without any user interaction and doesn't require any toolbars, which is handy for IE9. The lack of a portable version (for a given platform) is also an oversight. A Sticky Password license is for one computer plus a portable version, which I've had to use several times when my preferred computer was down. I really wish that everyone would boost the priority of 64-bit support.
Feb 21 2011 at 9:35pm
DrTeeth @ Frank

64 bit native support is overrated. Somne 32 bit apps are faster than their 64 bit versions. Many 64 bit versions are only made as people want them thinking that they are 'better'.
Feb 21 2011 at 10:50pm
Software Guy Nico, please don't flame Stephanie for asking. Just a few days ago you advertised a slideshow program for mac and windows, but it was really only for mac and not for windows. The software said for mac and windows, but was NOT! So I don't blame her one bit for asking.

charles hedbring Woah! Slow down dem horses cowboy! The barroom "deal" here is NOT $29.95 from $59.95 mellow mates. It is a wimpy markdown on the website on the Windows version from $39.95. OK, gotta get back on my horse and go looking for more scams (err, "errors"). "Hi-oh Silver...away!!!"

Mark Fuss Greg B,

That is odd, but you are correct. If you click the "Buy Now" button on the BDJ site and then click "Remove" in the shopping cart page that opens, you will be taken to the link in my original post, but with the BDJ discount prices being shown. When I made my original post, I simply copied the address in my browser address bar, so I have no idea why the prices are shown differently. Thanks for pointing this out, as I would not want to mislead anyone, just trying to be helpful.
Feb 22 2011 at 1:32am
Agile Team Mark, Greg, et al:

Please note that you need to click on the big green Buy Now button in the upper left corner of this page to get the 50% discount . It'll take you to https://agilewebsolutions...bitsdujour

Once you're there, you can remove the 1Password for Mac + Windows single-user bundle license; you'll be taken to our store page, modified to show the 50% discount on all of our products.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

NOTE: The posts in this thread that show my name in the "sig" lines are actually from me, not from AWS co-founder Dave Teare. I don't know why the Bits du Jour site admin has changed the post attributes to show Dave's name.

Tore Hoyem Hi.

Opera is my web browser of choice.
Any chance of your product supporting Opera any time soon?
Feb 22 2011 at 6:33am
O I I purchased 1Password hoping that Agile Team will soon release the ".1p4" fully encrypted format for both platforms. The current partial encryption is just not enough for a security product, so I will keep important passwords in KeePass until the new format arrival.

Thanks,
Feb 22 2011 at 7:09am
Agile Team Tore, we understand that Opera has made some improvements to its API, and we hope that trend continues so that we might be able to look again at the possibility of integrating 1Password with Opera in some future release.

To be clear, though, there's no information about *whether* (much less when) a 1Password extension for Opera might become available.

Agile Team O I, we understand there are some who disagree with our decision to improve performance by leaving URLs and item titles unencrypted, and that's one of the modifications we're considering for the data storage format.

That said, I don't have any information about precisely what those modifications might entail or when they might become available.

In the meantime, be assured that no confidential information is unencrypted in the current data storage format.

I hope that helps.

Jeffrey Goldberg Hi, O.

You are correct that 1Password leaves unencrypted the same kind of information that can be found in browser bookmarks. This design was done so that for everything else, we only had to decrypt the smallest amount of information needed at any one time. When 1Password is unlocked, everything remain encrypted except for the specific item you are using. This is a subtle security feature that isn't very visible to users. But if you go to our Knowledge Base article on cloud storage security you can find all of the details.

But as we move more toward life in the Cloud, we know that leaving information like the URL and title unencrypted is something we need to change. We will have that completely in place by the time of 1Password 4 (sorry, no date on that), and will probably have it available even before 1Password version 4 is released.

Cheers,

-j

Jeffrey Goldberg for the Agile Team.
Agile Web Solutions Vendor - Feb 22 2011 at 8:31am
S B Mr. Goldberg,

I personally don't like the idea of having links and tags unencrypted. Yes, "Unencrypting as little as possible at a time" is a great goal, though irrelevent here. I'm surprised that you seem to be arguing that a good way to uncrypt as little as possible at a time is to leave these things unencrypted!

The references you supplied makes silly statements about the relative security of 128/256-bit keys. Your references suggest the real reason for your choosing 128-bit encryption is that you're worried about small cell phones not having the horsepower to handle 256-bit AES. Seems silly, you're not encrypting that much.

128-bit AES may be much more than adequate, but 256-bit AES *is* required by the government for extreme circumstances. Your statement "Googling for '128-bit AES vs 256-bit AES' I found explanations that the Earth hasn't existed for as many years as it would take to crack 128-bit encryption" is both naive and fatuous, and I trust that you're much better than that.

Real security requires good key management, and I'm happy to infer from the reference to PBKDF2 that you're using an RSA security suite, though the SSL reference makes me wonder.

Thank you for your responsiveness.

Alas, I'll have to pass on this one.
Feb 22 2011 at 2:14pm
Agile Team Hi, S B.

I don't think tags are unencrypted-only the URLs of Logins and whatever titles (names) you decide to give the items. Personally, I don't mind that someone knows I have an Oregon driver's license, a MasterCard, and an account at First Technology Credit Union, as long as they don't know anything confidential about those items. As I wrote above, though, "we understand there are some who disagree with our decision to improve performance by leaving URLs and item titles unencrypted, and that's one of the modifications we're considering for the data storage format."

The comment about googling for 128-bit vs 256-bit encryption was from me, not Jeff. I did that, early on, because I was curious about the arguments for one and the other. I'm not sure how to respond to your comment about fatuousness and naïveté...I truly don't think I'll mind if someone finally cracks my 128-bit encrypted data in a few million years.

As I wrote above, "In the meantime, be assured that no confidential information is unencrypted in the current data storage format."

I hope that helps, S B.

Daniel Goldman Oh, I stumbled on this deal on BitsDuJour and I wrote this long and detailed thing about how 1Password is awesome and that I use it several times daily, and how if you do any kind of web development it's a must have to keep all the crap needed for every client straight. Literally the thing was like super long. Then I realized that this particular deal was from February. So I deleted it and wrote "crap, I missed it". When doing so I was referring to the deal, but not so much that I had missed purchasing it, but I missed the opportunity to sing the praises of 1password...

Yudha Yan Kusuma Would love the ability to add a new template (wallet type.. etc), add a new field, unlimited field and editable field name. Portable drive edition would be very handy.
Nov 15 2011 at 6:29pm
Agile Team Thanks for the explanation, Daniel. I got a notification of the post you referred to and was pretty confused when I couldn't find it here. :)

We're happy to hear nice things about 1Password, though, and you never know when another deal might come along.

Thanks so much for using 1Password!
Agile Web Solutions Vendor - Nov 15 2011 at 11:21pm
Agile Team Yudha, I don't know of any effort underway to create a version that runs on a portable drive. We think the "1PasswordAnywhere" feature built into 1Password provides sufficient portability, especially if you're using Dropbox to share and sync your 1Password data among multiple devices, because the 1PasswordAnywhere file (1Password.html) is automatically accessible on your private Dropbox web site from anywhere that has an Internet connection, making it even more convenient than a portable drive.

We've looked into various customization possibilities, and I'm sure some of them will make their way into 1Password in some future version. it's no small undertaking, though, because it'll require a simultaneous change to all the platform versions. To set your expectations, there is no information about what features might be implemented or when they might become available.

It helps to be reminded, occasionally, of features our customers would find useful, so thanks for letting us know!
