What are people saying about ABBYY Screenshot Reader

Bxxxx Oxxxx I purchased this product 2008 but I left it behind after first change of PC

Install on new PC said: Serial number can not be activated.

Does it still have such an internet activation ?
That just gives a lot of problems for the user.
In that case it is not worth $9

I think that BitDuJour should have a system that declares clearly what activation system a product uses: For example

A= No internet activation
B=Internet activation with a friendly amount of activations (ex 10, and added 2/year)
C=Internet activation with 3 activations
D=Internet Activation with 2 activations
E=Internet Activation with 1 activation

Actually, I have worked hard to stay on level A . It saves a lot of trouble and
99% of my PC programs are now on level A - I don't miss anything

There are so many excellent open source programs. It gives a great amount of freedom and very easy migration to a new PC.
Why pay a lot of money and get a totally limited freedom. And a lot of wasted time ahead to keep the programs activated with complicated methodes and a lot of support contacts.

Chris @ Bxxxx Oxxxx It still needs to activate over the internet to their servers.
Also, most of the software offered on BDJ does tell us about the activation procedure, if the vendor tells them. (I assume) It is under "The Fine Print" tab. Of course this vendor doesn't tell us anything except that "Upgrades to future versions of the software will require additional payment. Installing a new version may overwrite the existing version and invalidate your license key."

@ Corno Jacobsen This is the version offered here as I just purchased and installed it: Build 11.0.113.201; Part# 1136.1

Cary Adams I've been using a promotional version of this for some time. It is essential to what I do, and has saved me much time.

Recently I ran into a compatibility issue, and ABBYY's tech support helped solve my issue (and this was for a "free" promotional version).

So I'm glad to see this offer, and in gratitude for their assistance, and to gain increased OCR capability, I will be purchasing this today.

Say what you will about ABBYY, but when it comes to OCR, they ARE the best.

Nelson Therrien I'm still trying to find a use for this...

The video shows a complete OCR product, which IS NOT what we get here...

It's a quick little tool to make a screen shot and then convert it to text... BUT, if we "get" the text, let's say, from a web page, it does a good job of capturing the text and recognizing it, but doesn't keep event the simpliest formating (maybe change of line, but not even paragraphs)! And since it's just text, why not simply do a copy and paste (from Web, pdf, Word or other)?

For images, it doesn't do a good job... It does recognize most of the text, but creates other bad things as well... So, not really usefull.

So, again, if it's just good for text, then why not simply use Copy/Paste?

And for images, I know it's a lot more money, but you're a lot better with tools like SnagIt (for capturing, but I guess the capture tools that comes with Windows would be just fine) and a real OCR (I tried Omnipage 17 and ReadIris 14) would do a LOT better job, both with text recognition, image recognition and keeping formating and colors. If you have Adobe Acrobat, the OCR that comes with it might be enough as wel...

So, very cheap and I was hoping that skipping a few steps (capturing and importing in an OCR software) would worth the small fee, but the result is too bad...

Chris @ govertz ~ I found this on their site:

The following error message appears during activation of the program:

This serial number cannot be activated automatically. You may be are trying to activate the program on more computers than is allowed by the End User License Agreement.

Solution
This message appears when the serial number of the program you're trying to activate was blocked. This can happen for several reasons:

The serial number was activated very frequently.
The serial number was used to upgrade a program.
As a result of a violation of the end-user license agreement.
Please contact technical support for further information.

I then went to my install folder and looked at the EULA and found this:

1.1.1 Number of seats and network access. Unless You have been permitted to install and use the SOFTWARE on a specified number of Computers on a Network (“per-seat licensing”), or on more than one Computer on a Network permitting simultaneous use of the SOFTWARE (“concurrent licensing”), You may only install and use the SOFTWARE on one Computer (“one-seat licensing”).

1.1.2 If You are an individual human being person, You may install and simultaneously use one copy of the SOFTWARE on two Computers, including one home Computer and one office Computer, provided You are the main user of these devices.

1.1.3 If You are a legal entity You may install and use the SOFTWARE on as many Computers and/or Virtual machines as the number of licenses You acquired. You may access at a given time one installed copy of the SOFTWARE using Terminal Services from only one Computer unless otherwise agreed in a separate written agreement between You and ABBYY or ABBYY’s Partner or in any documentation accompanying the SOFTWARE. Terminal Services for the purpose hereof allow a user to access applications and data on a remote computer over a network.

Matt Excellent Lightweight Software with Unlimited Potential!

Just bought two licenses.

It does an EXCELLENT job of recognizing text from images! (Contrary to comment above) And a flawless job of extracting text from Window's forms.

The 'paid' version has a couple of nice 'added' features.

If you can't think of any uses for this type of software, it probably isn't for you.

govertz Thanks to @Chris.
Sad I had to go to work, and didn't see your answer. I'd would like things like licence terms to be stated clearly here on BDJ, or at least at the vendors website.
I've found that in this case it wasn't, thats a shame, they would have had a sell, if I could find the terms easy, and not had to rely on a user to tell me.
I'm a bit dissapointed with BDJ here, why didn't they demand the vendor to be clear about the licence term, to me they are very important. How can I know when I do something illegal, if I don't know the laws I'm breaking.

Chris @ Norwel Gordon ~ I am not affiliated with ABBYY, just a BDJ customer like yourself. I posted what I found in my EULA PDF's with the program for one person and posted links to the promotions I found elsewhere. I assume if you want to know more about the while supplies last that you post on that page for the free version. I did however notice that they haven't updated the page to show the latest version on the one you purchase.
The owner of that site is Ashraf, who used to post on GiveAwayoftheDay but moved on to his own site and now works with vendors just like BDJ does.

Matt Hello,

I downloaded and installed the free version from the link above.

The 'free' version is an older version 9, has advertising for ABBYY FineReader and is 153 MB in size. It looks like the Demo version only with no time limits.

The 'paid' version, which I purchased from BDJ, is version 11, no advertising, 240 MB file size (larger OCR dictionary?), seems more accurate and has a few nice added features.

I'm glad I purchased the paid version, even though I bought the extra, unnecessary license.

Dunking I tried to download the trial of this. Despite my better judgement, I filled in the form, etc, and got to a download page where it wouldn't download. The link the page sent me back to the list of product downloads, and the link on _that_ page sent me to the download page with a link back to the list of product downloads...

Maybe if I were super-keen to upgrade my copy I would persevere, but I am merely interested (albeit a little more than the ones I haven't bothered to download a trial). Even a small road hump at this stage can turn away a potential sale. Which it looks like has happened here.

Matt Hello ABBYY,

Does your ABBYY Screenshot Reader phone home?

If so, what information does it send? Does it send screenshot captures?

I see this 'constantly running' background process: ABBYY network license server (32 bit).

If I stop it, ABBYY no longer works.

Can you tell us all what this process does? If it only checks the license, why does it do that?

I'm very concerned.

Thank you.

Dunking Well, I got a download link via email. Don't know if that's normal or because I complained, but if it's normal perhaps the website should say it is coming via email. However, I also found:

@Matt: I see this 'constantly running' background process: ABBYY network license server (32 bit).

Me too. Even after I had terminated the application. Sorry, but this completely kills not just this but any Abbyy software for me. Don't care how good a deal it is, when it's terminated there should be nothing whatever running at all. Apart from that, if you're not willing to trust me, as a customer that actually gives you money, I'm not willing to trust you as a supplier.

Steven Avery I know from experience that if you try to use ASR simultaneously concurrently on multiple puters you might get a buzz that you can't do that. I think that happened to me once. And there was some discussion on DonationCoder about the calling home.

The sense I get is that multiple concurrent use of one license is the purpose of calling home, although they should comment. When the license is so inexpensive, eventually having a second one.

As for being a service, lots of programs do that. Has advantages and disadvantages.

Right now, my only question on use is if there is an option to always keep the icon on the desktop after taking a picture. I find I have to jump back to the start menu (a very minor annoyance.)

Lito I just bought this and it's a nice program. It works well for the most part but it seems to have issues if the fonts used on the capture are stylized. But overall I can see that it is a very useful program.

Yeah it looks like their license check is a constant running service. I got their PDFTransformer Classic 3.0 program and it also runs it's own licensing server and it runs all the time. I am not too bothered by it but I can see how this can be an issue especially for those that might have minimum amount of RAM in their system. Unfortunately many programs today use a similar scheme for license enforcement, but usually the service stops if the program that requires it ends.

You can just end the service and set it to manual so it won't autostart. But then you'll have to start it yourself anytime you want to use their program. They probably don't do it automatically because to start/stop a service you need admin rights so if they implemented a start/stop of the license server then anytime you ran the program it would require a UAC prompt.

As far as what the license server does, the program checks that service to see if you have a valid license to run the software. I turned off the service then unplugged the net connection, then turn it back on and ran the program and it worked fine. It doesn't seem to need a internet connection or phone home after you activated a license in my short test.

Steven Avery Thanks, Lito. I think stylized fonts give every OCR programs difficulty. I work with many books from the 1700s to the 2100s and you get used to what degree of utility you have. The 1600s is basically a no-go.

And I would say the one weak point on Abbyy is that on older books a few too many "e"s come out as "c". They should tweak that algorithm.

Steven Avery Without sounding too redundant, just to say why I like Abbyy so much.

It works directly with cut-and-paste to clipboard. (You don't have to run through an OCR program or Onenote or any other program. I rarely use the Word or File options. In fact I use WinSnap for region pics with annotation capability to File.)

The results are good.

It is strong on foreign languages

Low profile

Great on pic as well as OCR text. (Sometimes I take a few different pics and stick in an editor then take a combined pic. Or add my text. You can do this type of stuff quickly.)

Solid support, even on a low $ product.

Essentially you are getting the benefit of the high-powered programs that a company developed on an easy-use way.

Andrew Sciascia Yeah, I never ever find myself coming on here to make comments about software. I just bought this on a bit of a whim because I had tried a couple of different methods and OCR apps to try to convert a jpg to text with basically no success. I went through printing and scanning and stuff to use stuff that came bundled with my printer and it was SLOOOOWWW and HORRRIBBBLLEE.

So anyway I fired this thing up and it's ridiculously fast, was 100% accurate and even did a fairly decent job of trying to maintain the formatting (it was in a table and I was pasting into notepad.)

Super impressed. Highly recommend if you've got a use for it.

Matt Thanks Steven, Lito, Dunking and others who have commented on the licensing service!

I was concerned that along with checking licenses, ABBYY might be uploading OCR'd text. Other developers have been known to do such things. The original AutoCopy Firefox add-on comes to mind.

You just never know nowadays.

I wish ABBYY would comment on this.

Thanks again.

Rich OBrien I bought Abbyy Screenshot Reader when it was offered by BitsDuJour for $9.90 in November last year. I've needed a little OCR program like this for years and greatly appreciated that BitsDuJour brought this program to my attention because it works well. It is fast, convenient and accurate. I find that I use it once or twice a week. For $6.99 this is a highly recommended must have.

I didn't want to install demo in case I messed the giveaway reg I already have. I'm not sure what was changed between 9 and 11 either, but 9 seems to perform just as well as 11 in any capture I have tried them on. Certainly a very useful software because of the OCR.

_*_ @Joe McCormick, mind you, this is only a guess; I am thinking it refers to whole version numbers meaning you old will be invalid to use on the new version. I would have to think reinstalling the old version once again and loading in the old key should continue to allow usage of the version paid for by the user.

Of course this is only a guess and the developer will have provide a definitive answer.

Doug Atkinson I have both Abbyy Screenshot Reader v9 and recently updated to V11 during a previous offer. v11 adds some features to help you better align the text capture area, but this also requires an extra mouse click to operate - so in some ways I like v9 better. However, I imagine there are times that feature of v11 would come in handy and overall it's not that big of a deal. The OCR capability of Abbyy software is very good and for the price of today's offer, this is a good utility to have around.

Louis H Tom and Gray Lox, I can confirm that it runs on Windows 10 Pro 64 bit. This is another program I had not gotten around to installing on my windows 10 machine. I purchased it back in 2013. I installed with not problems and my old serial number registered just fine.

I have tried it on a number of different sites and all is working well.

@ Gde Swart - The program allows you to choose if you want to run it at startup, or run only when you need it. Right now, with it in the background, it has two processes running - utilizing a total of 51.4 MB of memory with no CPU usage. Depending on the size of the capture, it does use a small percentage of CPU. I have

For my general usage - up to 3 paragraphs of text - it momentarily uses between 1 to 2 % CPU while it captures, converts, and stores in the clipboard.

This increases when capturing text in a graphic. The larger the selection of text, the greater the CPU usage. I have not seen it go higher than 4-5% for my usage with Graphic based text.

When I close it out, the main program clears out of memory quickly. I do still find an entry in the background for ABBYY network license server (32 bit). It takes up 5.1 MB of memory, but shows no ongoing usage of my CPU.

I am currently running it on a machine with i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz 4.00 GHz with 16 GB of ram. It is very quick and I do not notice any drag on the system with it running in the background.

Hope some of this helps.

Lito Gde Swart: You can close the program by right clicking and exiting out using the tray icon. But there is a service installed called ABBYY Screenshot 11 Licensing Sever running in your services that is started automatically at windows startup. You can disable that manually, but if you do, you can't run the program. If you want you can disable then enable it only when you want to run this program.

As far as system resources go I don't ever notice it but I have a lot of ram. But the licensing server eats about 14MB of ram, and the actual program eats about 23MB of ram. Processing wise it is negligible impact on my system (i7-3770k).

I may be mistaken, but I downloaded the program from the ABBYY website this morning and it shows as ABBYY Screenshot Reader. Build 9.0.0.1080; Part# 5988
Copyright 2008!

I purchased this in 2013. I installed and ran my old license and it registered without any problems.

There is another program called ABBYY FineReader which is currently released as Version 12.

Where are folks seeing ABBYY ScreenShot Reader as Version 11?

Please help me figure out what I am missing here. Thanks!

@ Rick Obrien...

Do you have your Original Product Key?

If you do not, then you may have to wait until you can hear back from the Vendor. Check out their website and let them know.

If you do have it, here is what I did earlier today to get it installed and working with my old product key.

It will look like this with letters and numbers in place of the X's

XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX

When you install the program, choose to Activate it. Enter your Product Key in the boxes provided. It "should" then register without problems. (AS I said, this worked for me, but it is a new machine and a clean install of Windows 10. So your mileage may vary.)

Doug Atkinson @Louis H: I'm not sure what the current version is being offered today at BitsDuJour, though I imagine it is v11 as that seems to be the current version. I used to have v9 that I had obtained direct from Abbyy, and then when someone had reported that v11 was being offered on BitsDuJour (at their previous promotion), I decided to update. Their website indicates v11 here: http://help.abbyy.com/Scr...eneral.htm
That website also lists the way to get technical support if you are having issues.
According to the upgrade policy listed here, upgrades to new versions are not free. Thus today's $6.99 deal is good if you want v11 vs. v9. However, the only difference I've noted between the two is an improved text selection box. That is, in v11, after you initially select a box to capture, you can then fine tune it before actually OCR'ing the text.

Laurie Nelson About 6 months ago, I discovered ABBYY Screenshot Reader. I didn't know there were any GOOD OCR programs at a decent price until then. After researching OCR programs, I gladly purchased this one and I love it.

After years of doing genealogy research, I had subscribed to two newspaper sites where I found so many obituaries, wedding stories, and other newspaper articles that my genealogy research fast forwarded by leaps and bounds. Before finding this program, I had been using Dragon Naturally Speaking to convert newspaper items into text. It was a huge drag, trying to train Dragon to understand me and then having to do a lot of editing of Dragon's output. All that talking to Dragon was exhausting!

Once I started using ABBYY, my time to transcribe the newspaper articles to text that I could put in my genealogy software database was cut in half or more. When the newspaper article is very legible, ABBYY is fast and 100% accurate. With old newspapers or some that are light or possibly not scanned well, ABBYY still does a good job. There are only a few times, I've had to do major editing of an article. For my usage, this is an outstanding program--fast, highly accurate when the text is legible, and uses very few resources on my 8GB Windows 8.1 computer, etc.

BTW when I purchased this program, it was v. 9, but afterward I was able to upgrade to v. 11 at no additional cost. I don't know if that has changed since then.

Louis H @ABBYY iAm....

Thank you for responding here.

You all may not officially support Windows 10, but I am using it with Windows 10 Pro 64 bit, and it works.... with the following caveats regarding V11 which I purchased today.

With V11 I have a bit more work to clean up what I capture, and the selection box appears on my second monitor when I select text. It still works. It is not as easy to see what I am actually selecting until AFTER it has been selected. (I have to visualize the box I am making around the text.) But it does convert the text to editable text. V11 at least allows one to adjust the selection after it has been chosen. (It does show up in the box after it has been selected.)

I am not sure what is different, but I am leaving both versions installed. Since I can find no money back policy, and ABBYY does not claim compatibility with Windows 10, I am thankful it was only $7. I purchased V11 based on how well V9 worked with my Windows 10 machine. My mistake, not theirs.

Doug Atkinson As with @Corno, it would be nice to know what version this is, as the Fine Print doesn't say. For $7 this is a good deal. I've been a user of Abbyy Screenshot reader for several years, and the OCR reader is well done. As with any OCR, you need to proofread the results, and they will vary depending on the resolution and quality of the text on the screen. For @Angel User, yes, you should be able to capture any text displayed on your screen, such as an e-Book display on your computer. It can also capture images, but that's not really the tools main benefit.

Roger Rines I purchased this ABBYY tool the last time it was used and find it does a great job of capturing the text displayed on the screen.

If I were to dream and knew who to ask, I would like the tool to have a persistence option. As I use it now, it does a capture and goes away. When I documenting a process I need to capture displayed text phrases often. Because it always goes away after a capture, the need to restart it again from the tray becomes a time sink.

- Copy text passages out of Google books, Amazon previews etc
- Copy text from copy-locked PDFs, eBooks etc
- Texts from screenshots

Laurie Nelson I'm so glad I found this ABBYY Screenshot Reader on BDJ about 6 months ago. It's been a godsend for my genealogy research. I had been transcribing obituaries, wedding announcements, etc., manually, which took a VERY long time.

Now I just capture the text from the online newspapers and let SSR do the work. It's not perfect; sometimes the newspapers have a poor image. But it's worth it to be able to edit something that would take much longer to transcribe. At other times it's absolutely perfect--word for word--because the image is so good.

I paste the text mostly into All My Notes, which I believe is another great program I found here. You can paste it into any program that accepts text.

When we get a message box for an error, with perhaps error code, and extra description, we can use this to capture it, and convert all of that to text. (EG So we can search Google)

Jim Buchanan I tried it for the first time yesterday. Not much of an interface, but then why make it difficult. It took some time to figure out what was meant by some of the terms but once I chose the correct path everything fell into place.
As for poor image quality being transferred to MSWord, the only thing I can say is that it came out light. So I changes font in MSWord and almost everything was there. I believe it was missing a box shape in one place. Why, I'm not sure because it copied all the other symbols.
Now there is a worthwhile comment. Is there anywhere where a person can change the font output? Not that it really matters because I changed it once it was copied anyway.
So now I have to test it on a website and then type of some sort. Everything seems good.
BitsduJour had an OCR program on a short time back and I missed it because it wouldn't download. I really wanted that one because it was a very nice price. Not free but it wouldn't break the bank. Hoping to see it again.

Tim Parsons I should read the small print more. I'd sort of hoped this was a newer version than the one I already have...

Mostly, what I need this to be able to do is tables.

Properly.

Sadly, it struggles a bit, particularly on the first and last lines, so the post-production edit is a little more time-consuming than I'd like. But it's still an awful lot better than an image.

It doesn't offer many possibilities for fine-tuning either. Camelcase text will get split into separate words -- which is probably unsurprising -- but it'd be rather lovely to be able to tweak its tolerance of whitespace as word separators.

It would also be rather brilliant if you could feed it a screenshot made by other means and ask it to read it directly instead of having to open it in an image viewer and screenshot it again. But again, it's still a useful thing to have around...

Doug Atkinson I have noticed a few similar issues as @Tim Parsons. I use SSR mostly to grab book table of contents listings for a project I'm working on. Sometimes it fails to grab the last line, even though I'm sure it was in the capture window. Also, with the page numbers at the end of the contents list, sometimes it captures them in-line, and other times it places the page numbers after the text, at the bottom. As Tim said, overall I'm still very pleased as it saves a lot of work, but there are the occasional glitches. Still highly recommended.

Larry Kesty Yes it will capture text from a jpeg.
Provided it has little background noise. You may have to adjust the brightness or contrast first in your jpeg. I have used this for 7 years by first using the snipping tool to save as a jpeg and then using screenshot reader to capture my hard drive sizes in bytes.
The only draw back is you have to replace the period captured and replace with a comma to make the bytes show as xxx, xxx, xxx.
I just downloaded the Trial.....
I would like to order this for Windows 10 but I see that the ScreenshotReader.exe file has a signing time of Monday, January 12, 2009 11:01:11AM

Doug Atkinson Version number would be helpful. Last time I ordered this the version for sale was different than the demo version. The version sold here last time was Build 11.0.113.201. Is this an update from that version? I'd like to know if it is worth upgrading or if this is the same version sold last time.
For Mr. Phillips, Abbyy FineReader is a full scanning & OCR product that lets you scan pages (using an optical scanner such as from Epson, Canon, etc.) and OCR those pages and convert them to PDFs, for example. Screenshot Reader is ONLY a screen reader - that is, it can OCR any text displayed on your screen. You run the program, select the text using your mouse buttons, and then the text is grabbed into the clipboard where it can be pasted into another application like Word or a text editor. The latest V11 can capture Text, Tables, and Images.
I use the text capture with OCR to grab from images of book table of contents listings, and it works very well. There are some glitches now an then - sometimes the page numbers appear right after the title (as it should) and other times it puts all the page numbers together AFTER the text. Also, on occassion it sometimes seems to miss the last line of text, even though I'm careful to be sure the box extends beyond the bottom.
As with any OCR software, it isn't always perfect and you will need to go back and edit your content, but the Abbyy Software is highly accurate in my experience.

Richard Blake On the Product Life Cycle and Technical Support Policy page, http://www.abbyy.com/support/policy/, it shows three life cycle phases: Current Portfolio (current major version); End of Sales (one previous major version); End of Life (all other versions).
On the Supported Versions page, http://www.abbyy.com/supp...lproducts/, it shows Screenshot Reader 9 and 11 listed under End of Sales; SSR is not shown under Current Portfolio. Does that mean that development has ceased and this product is being retired?

On the Technical Support Contats page,

I see contact info for many products, but not for SSR.

Joseph Dager I have used this product for several years and it was a great product. Since I have installed Windows10 every time there is a windows update, which is like every other day. The program will not start, and I have to go into the settings and manually re-configure startup. I re-purchased a new product in November that was "compatible" with Windows10, or so I thought, and I have had an ongoing support ticket for this ever since. And, of course, they are not responsible. Makes me skeptical that products are really being updated.

They even make me send screenshots of the problem on the 3rd and 4th occurrence to troubleshoot the issue. I purchased my product through BitsDuJour so I feel it OK to discuss it here.

If you never plan on using Windows10, I highly recommend the product.

mix624 I bought it and filled in my license. But I get no conformation that it is approved.
Then when I am trying to use the software I get a message that I need to register it, which I really, really DONT like (mildly expressed here since I want my comment approved). It looks like I must register and provide email, name etc again. I have already done that and dont like to be forced doing things.

Glitches like this makes the experience really bad because in todays hectic life you dont wanna sit and write comments like this. The user interface are very cryptic/minimalistic and everyone are not a zombie who just fill in a form without having it explained properly why I am being forced to do so.

It pisses me off since it is not possible to use the software without registering which use to be optional. I saw your "benefits of registering" page but why do you list it if I cant avoid it shoving it down my throat ? Cant use the software at the moment but yes, bought and installed it.

Cary Adams @Brett Slowman... If you only one to copy stuff from Chrome, then stay with the extension you mentioned. But this product will copy/OCR any screen content.

In addition, this will OCR text from screen images, or copy the screen image as an image file, It also enables you to copy table content and paste it to a document, preserving its table attribute, or into spreadsheet cells.

The only downside I see, is that ABBYY runs a licensing service in the background at all times for each of its programs. I changed mine to manual start.

Joe McCormick Bret Slowman. I just added Copyfish to chrome. It works OK, but I prefer using the Abbyy Screen Shot Reader. Copyfish only works in Chrome. Screen Shot Reader will work in any browser.
Screenshot reader is a stand alone program that can be used to capture and area, a window, or a screen.
It can be captured as text to the clipboard, to Microsoft Word, Tables to clipboard, Microsoft Excel or to a file. For $6.99, this is a good program to have.
I think it is more a versatile program then Copyfish even though it is free Chrome App Store.

Doug Atkinson I tried Copyfish briefly and it DOES let you capture text from applications outside of Chrome, but you do need to run Chrome first to run the extension, of course. Using Copyfish took a lot more interaction, and in my quick trial, the accuracy was not as good (Copyfish got most of the text right, but inserted a lot of blank spaces). In my experience with Abbyy products, their OCR engine is excellent. For me, the low price of ScreenShot reader with the good (but not perfect) accuracy and ease of use is worth it. I do wish that ABBYY would have a tech support page where you could always download the latest version of their software, though.

Richard Blake Roz Fruchtman, try this
a) run cmd.exe to get a command prompt;
b) use the tree program to list your directories, redirecting output to a file
e.g. to see directories under c:\myfiles and save output to myFiles.tre:
C:\> tree c:\myfiles >myFiles.tre
if you want the names of the files to be listed also, add the /f switch:
C:\> tree /f c:\myfiles >myFiles.tre
tree output uses old MSDOS line drawing characters. If you can't find a setting to show these properly in the software you use to open the file, add the /a switch (tree /a ....) to make tree use simple ASCII characters instead.
Cheer up - you'll get your money's worth in situations that really need SSR.

But this is really annoying enough for me to have cancelled the purchase. Cary Adams This is my go to program when I have many screen to OCR needs, However, it is not my day to day tool. Why? Well, ABBYY requires a licensing service to run 24/7 on your machine before Screenshot Reader will run. As infrequent as I use this tool, that is an unnecessary burden to my system. So I have it turned off in Services. As I also own ABBYY's Transformer+ program, it too has a separate licensing service which runs annoyingly in the background, and like this product, I have disabled this under Services (which means of course that I must manually run the Services features whenever I want to use AABBYY's programs...

Instead, I now use Screenpresso, another program I acquired here through BDJ. In addition to incredible screen grab capabilities, including video, it now offers OCR grab, while not as accurate as ABBYY, is sufficient for minor day to day needs.

Jim User I have to say this is pretty clever software. During the purchase process, the conversion from USD to CAD was over ten dollars off. However using the currency selector, I was able to get it for 6.99 USD price.

Your licensing method is scuzzy to say the least. You have two services that constantly run and if they are ended your program dies.

I use this program to turn screenshots of book table of contents into text, and it works very well. Sometimes the page numbers properly follow each line, but on occasion the page numbers all end up at the end of the document. The OCR capability is also good, but of course depends on the quality of the original scanned image. I highly recommend this product.

575,142,484 bytes 785 files in the target directory
+ 7,996,212 bytes 35 files in the Common Files directory
These include
Dictionary files: 4 English 2,329,929 bytes
271 other languages 137,942,406 bytes
24 EULA*.rtf files 8,402,752 bytes (various languages?)
29 files 5,539,512 bytes that appear both within the specified install directory
and in the Common Files directory (ProductLicensing*.dll; AbbyyZlib.dll;
FineNet.dll; FineObj.dll; FObjEventSrc.dll)
Microsoft Visual C 9.0 runtime directory 4 Files 1,449,996 bytes
appears under both install dir and common files dir

Merely asking me in Setup which languages I needed would have saved me considerable space, between the dictionaries and the multiple EULAs. A little more care in coding setup could have saved more.

$6.99 is not the full cost of this software! Can I afford to buy more copies to install on my laptop and other machines with limited diskspace?

40% of 29.99 is $12.00 If there is ever a v12 I think I'll wait for the next BdJ offer.

Steven Avery This is an incredible deal on a program that even on regular price is an incredible deal.

You can ocr sections of Google books (fair use) or just about any writings with some language support. Regular modern script comes out just about perfect, but even 1800s books do very well. 1700s are problematic, as are tiny footnotes, but hey, what do you expect?. I was researching the heavenly witnesses bible verse :) .

Their support is excellent. They allow you to use it on more than one puter for your single user use, eventually you might break the usage envelope (new puters, temporary puters and such) and then you email them. The one improvement would be to include your registration in your signon area (where they have ticket supportl)

Steven

I have emailed them over 5-10 years on the occasional glitch, licensing etc. and they have always been helpful and responsive.

I plan to pick up multiple licenses here. At least 2, maybe for friends, and will announce it on my Facebook page.

Laurie Nelson I discovered this little gem on BDJ almost two years ago and it has been a real time and hassle saver for me. SR is small, fast, and easy to use. I highly recommend it. I use it mostly for genealogy research, especially for newspaper articles about my ancestors. In the past I had to transcribe those articles manually. Now ABBYY Screenshot Reader transcribes them for me. Even when the newpaper scan is not good, it copies all or most of the text correctly and I might have to correct only some words.

In addition to genealogy research, I sometimes use SR to copy error text I need to send to software support or other text I need to copy to save me from typing it myself. I'm so glad I found SR.

Constantin Florea I am sorry about the issue. It seems when the country is set to Canada and the currency to CAD the price is indeed 18.86 CAD.

Unfortunately this is a setting which the vendor has made and we (BitsDuJour) have no control over it. I have just contacted the vendor about this.

If the currency is set to USD, the discount appears fine.

Steven Avery There is an interesting question as to whether the engine in this is the same as Finereader. Of course, if you are doing a 100 page PDF, or even a 10 page, you might feel that Screenshot Reader should be replaced by Finereader.

From my observations, the Screenshot Reader OCR is excellent. And this is combined with a handy-dandy sensible unobstrusive interface.

Can anybody answer about the engines. This came up with Finereader on sale recently.

Again, if you do any sort of research with books or magazines online, you should have this program. Especially at the price today.

Adolphe Bought and installed successfully. There's one thing which is confusing during installation : the first dialog box asks you what folder you'd like to put the software in, and has an Install button. However, that step does not install the software, it just decompresses it. Chose the temporary folder you would like to decompress the software to, then press Install to unpack the archive. This takes a while. At the end, you get a new red dialog box which may suggest that the install is done, but that's not the case. Dismiss that box.

It's only at that step that the real installer shows up. First it asks you the language you'd like to use for install, then you get the chance to say where you'd like the program installed.

I really suggest this installer should be rewritten. I had to uninstall and reinstall the whole thing, in order to be sure it was done correctly. And I could do it because I use Revo Uninstaller.

Steven Avery Finereader includes Screenshot reader. However, the features of Screenshot reader along are truly incredible. The OCR is powerful and very easy to use. The screen pictures are great for clipboard pasting into my emails and word processing documents, they also have save to file. (I also use WinSnap for that.)

Remember, if it is tiny print being OCR'd, you can first increase the size of the font like in google books. The results will improve, occasionally the biggest problem is the tendency that an e might come out as a c. However, that is with the 1700s-1800s books that I often do OCR.

Occasionally, if you end up loading on a few puters and laptops I think you can max out the license. At $7, I keep an extra license or two floating around. Also if my license is for an earlier version, I keep the install around. The simplest though is simply to be at the current version, taking advantage of the $7 super-special. Version changes takes a year or two .

Occasionally you might have to restart the service, reboot, check a msg online. All that is quite rare and you can stay on top. Once or twice I emailed Abbyy and got excellent support.

Suggestion: It would be nice if Abbyy had a support station where you could sign in and see what you have and download to match. A few companies have that.

This is pretty much my #1 research Windows utility. Get it when on sale. Get two if you have many puters and know the program.

Sara User I thought I got this for free from another site on 8/8/2018, but then I had the very unpleasant surprise that - with installation the very same day - it did NOT work: Here's one problem:

C:\Users\[withheld]\AppData\Local\Temp\ScrA11E.tmp\_FRBatch.pac was not found.

Then some other, persistent, problem, even with second/third download, second/third/fourth installation:

Operation failed. Some errors occurred:
Cannot access document C:\Users\[withheld]\AppData\Local\Temp\ScrF00C.tmp. Access denied or document corrupted. Please close the document.

I use W10-64; every other software - more than 200 in all - works as expected.

Any comment? (This problem could not been resolved since Abbyy refuses to provide any help for giveaways, so whenever they don't work, even after allegedly successful install, as in this case, you're on your own. In principle, I would have been very interested in Abbyy FineReader at a good price, but then, with such problems, I have second thoughts.)

Doug Atkinson Longtime user of ScreenShot reader. I does a very good job at capturing screen text from an image and converting it to text. I use it to capture book table of contents listings. It has some issues - sometimes the page numbers appear on the same line, but sometimes the page numbers are formatted to appear at the end of the document and I have to do more manual editing. But for the price, it works great and I highly recommend it. Sorry for Sara User; I use Win10 64 as well and it installs and works fine. Perhaps the place where you got it has a corrupted version.

Sara User EDITED: I just lost 7$ plus lots of VAT.

This program (I downloaded and installed the file given in the Abbyy mail) is unusable for me.

When you leave it at the defaults, "Area, English, Text to Clipboard", then click, you get a special cursor to draw a rectangle. The screen gets greyed, and the rectangle gets white. Problem is, the rectangle you draw does NOT start at the point you hold down the mouse button, but some 200 pixels above the point (my left=main screen starts at y=0, my secondary=right screen starts at -300 or so; I tried on both, so my screen is not the problem).

Thus, you do NOT know what text you select, the wrongly-placed white background misleading you; it's only at the point of releasing the mouse button that the white background will then switch from its much too high a position to the one you will have really drawn with the mouse; this is identical for drawing the text area from topleft to bottomright or from bottomleft to topright.

This is absolutely awful already.

Then, I get the following error message:

---------------------------
ABBYY Screenshot Reader
---------------------------
C:\Users\[withheld by me]\AppData\Local\Temp\Retail.SSR11\SSR_{74BAF4E1-EB2E-40DB-8AD7-555B48917CB5}\_FRBatch.pac was not found.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

(Needless to say I did all three allowed downloads, and then used the middle download which in my download manager (IDM) went thru without any retardations.)

My original message:

(Thank you, Doug, will buy and hold you personally responsible if it doesn't work as fine as it does for you! ;-) (Yes, Colin's right, 7$'s a no brainer if it works.))

Very "funny". I'm really fed up.

As said, every other application on my system works as expected.

Doug Atkinson SaraUser, have you tried contacting Abbyy support at the contact given above? Also, have you tried fully uninstalling Abbyy first and then reinstalling it? Perhaps there is something left over from the previous install of the "free" version that is still messing things up. On my installation, I just have "area" selected, Text to Clipboard, and click the button. Then I just place the cursor where I want to start the selection, left click and drag to the bottom corner, then select capture, and it works fine. I don't know why it's not working for you. If the software doesn't work - then perhaps you should see if BitsDuJour can issue a refund (I don't know if they do that or not).

Steven Avery I've used Screenshot Reader for years (version 9 originally) and it has been my best small utility, doing a big job. Often I try to make sure I have an extra license available. (New puter, friends.) They do have some sort of check system if you try to install everywhere.

I also use WinSnap a bit as well. However, Abbyy is always used on the following two situations:

1) OCR in English, German, Latin, etc.
2) Pictures quickly to the clipboard, ready for pasting.

Granted I could also use it for "Save to File" but for that I usually use WinSnap, which is occasionally on Bits in the past. No OCR.

Very rarely I had to deal with an frbatch_pac glitch and the stopped service problems. The Abbyy support was superb, since it is a paid ($7) program. I kept my email support notes.

Since you can get this special, I would not bother with any "free" one day alternatives.

I've never had a problem getting the right text location, the issue with the gentleman above.

Granted, books from the 1700s and early 1800s can be hard for OCR, but that would be true with any OCR.

Sara User Update: Incredible white-rectangle display much too high persists, so I'll have to live with that if I want to use this tool: Rectangle is ABOVE the selected text, or, if the selected text is "long" enough, the rectangle partly superposes within the real selection area; both is incredibly awful.

This occurs even after closing down the pc and restarting it, after having switched off my secondary screen (the one with the even better solution, and of which the "y" axis start position is minus something, in order to get the "base line" of both screens identical; to make this clear: I switched off the possibly problematic screen BEFORE restarting the pc; I also switched off Autohotkey, but which doesn't do anything either for positioning the main screen (used solely now, for these try-out purposes).

This persististing after "repairing" the installation: I re-installed, but from my third one of three permitted downloads (one of two which had stopped in-between, was then resumed by my download manager): I was then asked if I wanted to repair, by replacing the file of n bits with the other one of n bits too, i.e. these two numbers in the dialog were perfectly identical. I clicked on "yes" all the same, so the install was overwritten/"repaired" then.

Btw, these files, according to the dialog, are all "modified on 9/16/2013, which has been more than 5 years ago and thus could indicate some problems with W10-64, since from 2013, W10 (32/64) has evolved in quite some way.

I do NOT get the above (or any other) error message anymore, for the time being, and after this "repair" (even with Autohotkey on and both screens on), and the text retrieved is very well the text within the REAL (but not indicated) rectangle you draw with the mouse (i.e. which you draw within the grayed-out screen area), but that - useless - white area which then displays around 200 pixels higher-up is an incredible nuisance.

It seems that the absence of development for more than 5 years shows here, on my system, the latter just being too recent for this tool's development status, and the same could happen for any other recent system, either today or after the next, automatic Windows (10) update.

Whilst my (as said, disconnected anyway) secondary monitor runs on a basic NVidia card, my main screen runs on the in-built 630 graphics, so this constellation is far from "exotic".

And I'm far from happy with this, the "user experience" price I'm paying to get (sufficiently big) screen text ocr'ed being very high.

HJ B As far as I can tell, all formatting is lost and font is substituted by a plain text font. Am I correct?

With that limitation, I can still see a certain usefulness for this application, if a quick, "down and dirty" capture is sufficient. Otherwise, I would capture the scree or portion as a graphic and then run it through Adobe Acrobat OCR.

On the other hand, if the screen is displaying copy-able text, I would just highlight the text and copy it using plain Windows functionality.

This only seems to be of value if the text on screen is a graphic or is copy-restricted.

Have I missed something?
Friday at 12:49pm Copy Link
1
Steven Avery For one thing, often PDFs do not have copy-able text. Similar with many books and magazines. I use Abbyy with material from Google Books, Archive.org, Academia.edu and all sorts of other spots Such small unit copies for research are generally "fair use"..

I find myself using the OCR daily, and only occasionally is the loss of some original formatting significant. Granted I should compare with Adobe, presumably Finereader does the same as Screenshot reader. However, I like the idea that I can work quickly, I don't have to run the tex-shott through another program. Speed is helpful.

I also use Abbyy for the very quick capture to clipboard, e.g. if I am gong to paste into an email or a document it is a very comfy quick metjhod.
