Book lovers, this one's for you.

I know what it's like to have more books than you know what to do with. If you're like me, you used to keep a small stack of reading material by your bedside, and as you've moved up through bigger spaces (dorm to apartment to condo to house), your collection has kept pace. You now have a veritable library of literary goodness.

If only you had an automated system for keeping track of your collection, you'd be able to recall the fact that you own every single Orson Scott Card book ever written. Or the fact that your friends have borrowed half of them...

All My Books will organize your collection in a flash. By simply entering the title of each book, the author's name, or the ISBN code, All My Books will instantly fetch a wealth of information about that book from it's extensive array of internet resources.

Everything is there - synopses, reviews, binding types, number of pages, even an image of the book's cover. And if you've already made some attempts at organizing your literary mountain, it gets better: All My Books can also import your book list from any text or spreadsheet file.

After the fun of entering your books into the system has ended, the real fun of analyzing your collection begins! You can search for titles, sort by fields, and calculate statistics about your collection - like the fact that over 80% of your books are about zombies! Who knew? Now, you do! Your friends will be amazed!

Even better, All My Books lets you export your entire digital library to text, CHM, Excel, and even HTML and mobile devices.

Michael Speir I have to say I really like the layout. I think you have the right idea. I have to ask, though, are Book and ISBN searches disabled for the trial version? It was a little disappointing when the first two searches I tried resulted in nothing. Perhaps your database focuses on particular genres?
Feb 20 at 3:18am
Max Smirnoff Hi Michael!
the search is not disabled in the trial version. We haven't our own database, therefore the program uses different online data sources like Amazon and others. You may try to switch the data source to another one using small button with the "arrow down" image on it near the "Original title" field in the book card dialog. I hope it helps
Bolide Software - Feb 20 at 3:30am
Michael Speir I see. Well, I like it, and it seems to be a good deal. I had started writing a similar program of my own some time ago, but I'm lazy. Besides, at this price, why bother?
Feb 20 at 6:44am
CJCotter (No questions here.) I hate product reviews that gush, but what a GREAT program! I already bought this in mid-December 2012 after trying out a couple of others. All My Books has all kinds of options to configure it the way you want it! Though I'm not an eBay merchant, STRONGLY urge your customers to buy a CueCat barcode scanner on eBay to use with this program. I did. If you scan two books per minute (and I’m being generous), that’s 120 books inventoried in just one hour! Can’t say enough nice things about your program!
Feb 21 at 7:30pm
Michael Speir I was hoping this one would come up today. If it does tomorrow or Sunday, I'm going to be leery of buying. I've had too many cases where my debit card was frozen because my bank didn't recognize the vendor, and I can't have that happen on the weekend. Is there any way to preorder?
Feb 22 at 2:56am
CJCotter Even though I already own a license, how can I take advantage of today's offer and get this as a gift for a different name and different email?
Feb 22 at 5:02am
Max Smirnoff CJ, thank you for your kind words! You can order the second license, then write to our technical support team with your order number and tell your friend's name and e-mail. We will replace the key then.

Michael, sorry, it is not possible to pre-order using the special offer price. The offer date is agreed with BitsDuJour team and we can't violate their terms.

John H Is this a proprietary database format? Can it be reliably exported to other programs? Open Office or Libre Office database or spreadsheet modules would be nice.

Can I exclude graphics from being saved by the program?

Can I keep the database in my Dropbox or online folder and access it from my other computers?

Does each computer I own require its own separate online activation?

Thanks in advance for a great deal.
Feb 22 at 5:53am
Max Smirnoff John, here are the answers to your questions:

1) All My Books uses MS Access database, you can open it in MS Access and export in any format you want. The built-in export functions can export your collection to CSV (can be opened in Libre Office spreadsheet module, I guess), MS Excel, HTML, CHM or PDF format.
Also, you can export the collection to iPhone or iPad :) We developed the special mobile apps as well.

2) if you don't want to download any graphics, you can use "do not download covers at all" option in the Preferences (menu item Tools-Preferences), "Online databases" tab.
By default, the program stores the images inside the database file, but you can switch to store them in a separate folder in the Preferences, "Expert options" tab.

3) It is better to use Dropbox as a backup location only. You can set the Dropbox folder as a backup folder for All My Books databases in the Preferences. If you open the database from Dropbox folder, every little change will cause _entire_ database file to update in the Dropbox storage. The better way - you can share the database file in your local network using some shared folder and open it from several computers. Some tips regarding the network usage are available at http://www.bolidesoft.com...-mode.html

4) Yes, each computer requires separate online activation. The good thing - we allow to activate the program on up to 3 _own_ computers with the same single license :)

Roger Osborne I tried a trial a month or so ago but allowed it to lapse because I could not author sort/display the library. I did e-mail it as a negative point but didn't receive a reply. Has this been fixed? Also, is it suitable for e-book collections? Not to launch and read but just to record a collection.
Feb 23 at 12:54am
Nebulous User I have about 2500 books in my home library. I have the majority of them Dewey Decimalized, but that is a laborious process for doing in your spare time.

(1) Does AMB provide a spot for a Dewey # on the main screen? I have tried book collection software that either gave me a customizable field name that I could use for the Dewey # or else did provide a predefinied field for this but it was on a tab I had to click rather than up front. Neither is a good option - I want to be able to input it easily and see it easily in my search results, plus I want to use it in my reports.

(2) Does AMB automatically retrieve Dewey #s from sources like OCLC WorldCat or other libraries?

Thanks.
Feb 23 at 4:44am
Bob McLain How long does it take to get a license? I bought one via your site earlier today but have yet to receive a receipt or registration details.
Feb 23 at 8:10am
Bill Damm Is there a way to add other book categories? History and biography, for example, are missing.
Feb 23 at 8:50am
Max Smirnoff Roger, it is very easy to sort the collection by Author, just click on "Author" column's header. All My Books is great for ebooks! It can read the metadata from many ebook file formats.

Nebulous user,
(1) Yes, AMB has the special field for Dewey and can display it on the main screen in the books details area.
(2) Unfortunatey, AMB doesn't automatically retrieve Dewey #s from the default databases. Amazon doesn't provide Dewey #'s, for example. You can try to use an additional plugin for getting book details from Library of Congress, it is available for download at http://www.bolidesoft.com...nload.html

Bob, the license should be sent automatically right after your order is processed. I guess, there may be a delay with order processing or try to check your Spam/Junk mail folder
Bolide Software - Feb 23 at 8:52am
Max Smirnoff Bill, sure, you can edit the categories using menu item "Directories-Subjects"
Bolide Software - Feb 23 at 8:53am
Nebulous User Max - Thanks for the reply. As far as I know, the LOC doesn't record Dewey numbers, only LOC numbers, so I doubt that plugin would help.
Feb 23 at 8:57am
Bill Damm Does your iPhone app permit adding books by scanning the ISBN number?
Feb 23 at 9:18am
Max Smirnoff Bill, current iPhone/iPad app can only browse your collection. We released the apps in 2013, they are too young now :)
We are going to develop them and they will be able to edit and add books to the collection too. Of course with the ability to scan ISBN with the built-in camera. Just give us some time :)
Bolide Software - Feb 23 at 9:38am
Michael Begley Is it possible to import my entire library of Amazon ebooks in one operation? I am not even sure Amazon will let me download a list of titles I own. I would hate to have to enter all these one at a time.
Feb 23 at 9:39am
Roger Osborne Thank you Max. I've downloaded, paid, installed and activated in about ten minutes. Thank you for making it so smooth. I would like to share that Amazon's ASIN Reference - for instance B00AQJ6XYM which they quote with every e-book, works when used in the ISBN search box, bringing up all the book details including the synopsis and cover. Maybe it is something you could mention in your features, if you haven't already.

Wow!
Feb 23 at 11:39am
Bob McLain When adding a book by ISBN, the software seems always to append "movidata-20" (your Amazon affiliate ID?) at the end of the URL.

Why is that? Can it be turned off?
Feb 23 at 11:49am
Albert Jester Regarding the Online license activation without a hardware footprint, does this means I use a activation turn any time I reinstall the software on the same computer? As example fresh install of Windows or fresh install of Windows 8 instead of Windows 7 on the same machine?

Is there a file I can backup before I perform fresh installs to preserve that machine activation?

I will moving my computers to Windows 8 soon but they will fresh install instead of upgrading the current system. So I trying to see if I need to wait until after installing Window 8 before activating AllMyBooks software.

Jac A. Hi, I have a problem.

I've added my book database from excel (1996 books) and it was imported succesfully.

BUT when I try to use "Click to download cover" it opens a window, shows a progress circle (like a classic flash one) and the window closes itself.

If I insert a book manually it works, I can search the book, the title, etc, etc but I can't do it for 1996 books!!

Any idea why this is happening? Thanks!
Feb 23 at 9:56pm
Steven Avery Hi,

Some nice stuff, ISBN successfully gets book info. No google books integration, although that might be google's problem.

The comments field should show on the full-screen mode because that is where you would put important comments, plus a couple of user-defined fields would be nice.

There is a "Create Template" in printing. That is very important. However it is not really there, unclear if Trial-disabled or a future planned feature.

Similarly some sort of keyword search, e.g. the search does not include the "synopsis". Mostly I would like another field like comments where I could put in keywords that would show up in search, I tried putting data in "play time" but the search ignores that field. It allowed me to put alpha data into Circulation but then ignored what I put in because it really is a numeric field. Granted you can place one book in multiple categories and use the category search.

Would like to read a comparison with the competition. For some research and personal library purposes a good app like this could be very neat.

There seemed to be a small glitch, that after some type of searching (the scan online, maybe some other time too) the ALL did not bring up ALL until I did Database-Reopen.

The non-proprietary data format, the fact of a decent little forum and the super-price make this a very nice offer. The comments not viewing full-screen and the lack of a keyword search are examples of areas that really should be stronger. Yes there is a categorty

Does the latest version support Audible-formatted audiobooks?
Feb 24 at 2:55am
Max Smirnoff Michael, it is not possible to load entire book list you own from Amazon. The batch import is available from CSV or MS Sxcel format and for the list of barcodes.

Bob, as far as I know, it it not possible to turn off that URL appendix in the current version.

Albert, yes, when you activate the program on the same computer with reinstalled Windows, it counts as a new activation. However, I don't think it is the reason to wait - actually, it is very hard to get banned by our automatic activation system :)

Jac, "Click to download cover" function will work again on 26-th of February. We are using Bing Search API for searching the covers and run out of search request quota. Trying to request a higher quota, but Microsoft support is too slow. When you add a book, the cover is downloading from the database you select, not from Bing. Sorry for this inconvenience.

Steven, you can add user defined fields in the Preferences (menu item "Tools-Preferences") "Custom fields" tab. "Create template" in printing should work as well as editing any of the existing templates - you have to use double click to activate the function. Almost any available field (including Synopsis and Comments) is available for search using menu item "Tools-Book Search..." or by pressing F3 key
Bolide Software - Feb 24 at 5:40am
Max Smirnoff webdancer, I am not sure about Audible-formatted audio books. If you can send one to support@bolidesoft.com I can test it (or add the support of them to our to-do list for the next version)
Bolide Software - Feb 24 at 5:42am
Bob McLain Bob, as far as I know, it it not possible to turn off that URL appendix in the current version.

Can you explain why your Amazon Affiliate code is appended to the URL of every book I add to AllMyBooks? Seems odd to have it there, and possibly a reason not to use/trust the software.

I'm looking at BookCAT as an alternative, and the URLs I add to that software seem Affiliate code free.
Feb 24 at 5:47am
Norm Sash @ Bob McLain I've noticed the same thing regarding what appears to be an Amazon affiliate ID added to the Amazon URL. I don't necessarily know why I feel a little uncomfortable with that, but it did cause some discomfort. That being said, I don't think that it really hurts anything. Doesn't affect my buying experience that I know of, and AMB just gets a little dime for it.

It would be nice to be able to edit the master affiliate ID's though... for example, let's say that I have a favorite cause or person I work with and just want to give them the credit for the purchase.
Feb 24 at 6:07am
Bob McLain @ Norm Sash

You're right, it doesn't hurt anything, but I wish Bolide had been up-front about pasting their Amazon Affiliate ID to the URL of all of my books. It's an interesting example of a "hidden fee" that is being paid to them by Amazon as the result of my actions.

The solution, as you suggest, is to give us the option of changing the Affiliate ID, or doing away with it altogether.
Feb 24 at 6:23am
Max Smirnoff Amazon affiliate program is useless here in Russia :) They send gift cards to me sometimes as a payment and we forward them to a random user from our database from the corresponding country. Those affiliate ID is used mostly to get rid of Amazon API usage limits. They provide a limited amount of queries to the affiliates who never bring them clicks or sales.
Bolide Software - Feb 24 at 6:30am
Norm Sash @Max Good explanation. That makes sense and makes sense that the affiliate ID would be used in the link.
Feb 24 at 7:12am
John Terdik I just installed the trial, scanned my audiobooks library (MP3 files) and when I clicked the button to add to All My Books an entry was added for each MP3 file, thus if I had 200 MP3 files for one book it resulted in 200 entries in All My Books. Did I do something wrong? I have a folder for each book in my library and currently have about 5000 books which equals 264K files.
Feb 24 at 8:10am
HJ B I have purchased this program. I want to use it mainly to catalog electronic books. Perhaps I am missing something, but, as far as I can tell:

1. The data base does not include a field that provides the actual file type (pdf, epub, chm, djvu, etc.) There is a field that contains the path to the ebook, but that is not the same as a file type field. All ebooks are simply called ebook.

2. If the program is asked to search for books on your hard drive, it proceeds to search for both ebooks and audiobooks. There does not seem to be a way to focus only on one or the other. Once the search begins, the window is locked. If you want to stop the search, it seems you have to us task manager to stop the process. The same window appears to permit you to focus on what kind of ebook you wish to catalog -- it displays a series of types. However, I have not been able to modify that list.

3. It appears that if the search for books option is used, all books found are listed and added. If you exercise that option again, it again finds all books, but does not appear to check back to see if the book is already in the database.

4. If I have 1000 books and 10 of them have the word "finance", when I do a search of the program's database, it displays information concerning one of the books, but does not display a list of all finds and does not permit me to hop to the next find.

5. Once I find a book, i do not see an option, within the program, to a) go to the folder in which that book can be found, or b) to open the book.

6. It would be helpful if the authors provided a reference as to how a document or its file name ought be structured in order to use the program to also catalog documents that are not formally published ebooks. For example, if I have a 1000 electronic essays, in pdf format, what information should I imbed in the title or elsewhere in order to have this program break down different fields of data for that material in its database.(title, author, publisher, pages, file size, format, summary, etc) and which information is just automatically picked up (e.g. file size or number of pages).

7. Does the program have memory or file size limits?
Feb 24 at 8:31am
Bob McLain @Max - The explanation for the Affiliate IDs seems logical, but at least one of your competitors (BookCAT) does not include Affiliate IDs at the end of my book URLs and has no trouble with the Amazon API. Sorry, but I'm uninstalling.
Feb 24 at 8:44am
Steven Avery Hi,

HJ B, great questions. I noticed some of the complications in adding from disk as well. Since that is not a major element for me, it is mostly academic, but kudos for asking very clearly.

Bob McLain, the affiliate thing is a puzzler. It really should not be hidden, and you can always snip off the excess part after going to the page, opening a new tab or window. On the other hand when you are getting a program for $10, do we really begrudge Max making a couple of bucks (if that, as he explained) if we happen to buy some books coming from All My Books. I think he should include an opt-out short-url option in config, but do not consider it a deal breaker (rather mild overall, and I am a big complainer on ethical stuff, as Nico knows).

=============

Max, thank you for the printing and custom fields explanations. Now, can you work on two things, the first more immediate.

a) fuller search, including allowing inclusion of Comments, Synopsis etc. This would be a straightforward enhancement.

b) keywords -- but I could take care of that with (a) with my own custom keyword field, if you implement A.

Simple keywords often have a usability advantage over trying to accomplish the same thing with categories.

Thanks.

=======================

LibraryThing had an interesting discussion comparing various methods.
http://www.librarything.com/topic/79197

While AllMyBooks is not mentioned, it still comes out quite well, especially with the Bits special.

Steven
Feb 24 at 10:29am
Bob McLain @Steven Avery I don't begrudge him a few extra bucks from the Affiliate ID links; it's the way it was snuck in there that bothers me. Had Max mentioned on his website that his ID would be tacked onto book URLs, I likely wouldn't have had a problem with it. But I'm now making it into more of a problem than it really is, so I'll stop...
Feb 24 at 10:40am
Steven Avery Hi,

Bob, your point is well-taken. And I would like to see Max include a notice about it and an opt-out option, so that is one recommendation. He can explain why he does it to encourage non-opt-outs.

All that being said, it is mild, when you think about various other problems we encounter (such as data-lock, programs that deliberately make printing and exporting very difficult and the links to dubious programs we see in various ways at times.)

Worth mentioning, and it should be changed, but as you said, we can make it more of a problem...

Steven
Feb 24 at 10:58am
Joe Bowling Is there a chance that you will offer All My Movies at a discount? If so, let me know. I would like to purchase that program as well.
Feb 24 at 1:54pm
HJ B Upon further use of the program, I found that two of the issues I raised are not issues:

4 - You can do a search that results in a listing of found books in the database. There is some confusion because there is a search window on the main screen that only results in showing the first hit and seems to want you to know what the exact title of the book is. It would make more sense to make that window into a global window that can be set to whatever parameters you generally use, and that produces a list. In order to achieve that result with the present program, one has to select search from the tools menu and fill out your parameters, each time. There is an option to create "advanced filters", but the search parameters created are static. e.g., you can use such a filter to regularly look for books that were copyrighted in 1972 and have the word Lincoln in the title.

5. When a book is found in the program's database. One can highlight the listing and then open the book. It would be nice if they had the additional ability to open the folder in which the book is located.

I look forward to hearing from the developer about the other questions raised.
Feb 24 at 5:06pm
D Rogers I purchased All my Books about a month ago at close to full retail. I can say the program is beautiful and works great.

But please be aware of this important point. It is not hard but can take anywhere from 1 minute to 5 minutes to add a book, especially if there are multiple editions, if the book is older, if you have to download a cover copy or if you have to scan in your cover, which I did on some books.

Now do the math. 200 books at 3 minutes a book is 10 hours. This does not include hauling books down from your bookshelf so you can type in the ISBN number into the program if you need to.

If your library is 2000 books, you are looking at a possible 100 hours of work. It took me about 12 hours for a small 200 book library I have. It seemed unending.
Feb 24 at 7:06pm
Steven Avery Hi,

Lots of competition (desktop - BookCat, EndNote, Calibre, Data Crow, Collectorz, My Book Library, Book Organzier Deluxe .. net LibraryThing, GoodReads ) ...

yet no standouts.

At the $10 here, and a reasonably active developer and a non-proprietary data format, and a pleasant enough interface ... it looks like a go.

Thanks.

Brad Perrault Hello

Tried to purchase this software tonight says to contact customer service regarding the order at first I thought it might be because I used a GMail address. So then I tried another email address associated with my sbcglobal.net account all to no avail.

Looked like nice software, guess I have to pass on this one.

Tiberius For three days I have been trying to get this program at 9.95 and SWREG will simply not let me get it.
That's what I see:
There appears to be an error in the information you have submitted that is preventing us from completing your order. For assistance, please contact customer service
Which I did, but the line got cut.
I hope you can help me.
Feb 24 at 11:55pm
Brad Perrault Hey Tiberius

This is the same exact error message I received, frustrating. Something has gone wrong with SWREG likely. This has happened more than once with SWREG doing the processing for other software I purchased. If you get a response from Bolide let me know.

Thanks, Brad
Feb 25 at 12:05am
Steven Avery Hi,

And I just succeeded with PayPal, suggest you email Bolide and see if they can make later accommodations. Sure they will try, considering.

I actually may have purchased this 2 years back, but since there was one release since then, with a $20 upgrade, simpler just to start fresh.

I really do see some good uses for keeping track of what I have, may buy, may need to read, need to read in libraries, etc.

It is a funny genre, a number of good programs, none that truly stand out of the pack, so the Bits Special looks real fine. Going into an Access database is very helpful if you want to do something else with your compiled info later.

Max Smirnoff All who had the problems with SWREG during the offer, please contact us at http://www.bolidesoft.com/feedback.html
If you have an order number, please specify it.

All questions please direct to the same web form as I mentioned before.

Thank you all for your orders! All Bolide Software team welcomes you!
Bolide Software - Feb 25 at 12:14am
Brad Perrault Hi Steven,

Good Idea contacting Bolide directly rather than call SWREG, the last time I dealt with SWREG directly, I failed to get a reply for over 20 hours. They informed me of the error message which I had already taken a screen print of, (NEWS FLASH) when the transaction failed in the first place. In the email SWREG sent me there were no instructions as to how to complete the transaction or what I needed to be do to resolve the existing order. Just an apology that the transaction failed.

So I email them back asking what to do? Twelve hours later I got a completely different representative who informed me I needed to contact the credit card processor. I was certain this was not the problem but I complied, and my Bank told me there were no holds on the account. So calling SWREG is not the best option.

I'll take your suggestion and see what the vendor Bolide does to resolve the matter.

Thanks, Brad
Feb 25 at 12:30am
Chris Roy Jackson That's right! SWReg is notorious for replying to Purchase problems with "Cut & Paste" replies WITHOUT FIRST bothering to read and understand the information that you send to them (no matter HOW Detailed).
Thanks to Bolide Software for their offer to make up for SWReg's inefficiency !!!
Feb 25 at 12:49am
Tiberius Great!
The deal finally passed with Max's help and Avangate.
If you have kept your order number from SWREG or just see SWREG's Ooops! message in your mailbox to find it.
Use the address that Max gave above and you will receive a link to Avangate, and it works.
Bravo!
Feb 25 at 1:21am
Norm Sash I hate SWREG... I always have so many problems with them and their response to problem resolution is consistently one of the worst. If I could I would tell vendors to find a different venue from SWREG... They really are bad.
