Preston Mitchell Question for Developer

Although MSFT Word can save a doc as HTML, Word's code is a bit messy. I was contemplating Corel WordPerfect for that purpose. But I noted Atlantis's feature of direct ePub conversion...very interesting. So, what about conversion to HTML? Does Atlantis do that too?

Joshua Cearley There is a decent amount of inline CSS used on the HTML it outputs, and it prefers to use size tags instead of normal headers, but the HTML appears to be fairly clean.

And yes, there also is some template functionality in Atlantis.

Taras Push J Gran, any document can be saved in Atlantis as a template (the "File | Save Special | Save As Template..." menu command). To create a new document from a template, use the "File | New | Create From Template..." menu command.

Taras Push Preston Mitchell, you can use the "File | Save Special | Save As Web Page..." command of Atlantis to save the active document as HTML. To put the document selection onto the clipboard in the HTML format, choose the "Edit | Copy as HTML" menu command.

Walter Lindrum I have heard of this program some time back, so as there is a no refund policy I'm going to install it and do a very hurried test of the types of WPíng i would normally do plus some sleep 9time to think of other tests), so hopefully I'll be back to buy a license with around 1 hour remaining of the promotion.

There are plenty of MS Word features not available in Atlantis Word Processor. But Atlantis has also a number of features that are not included in MS Word as well. Sorry, Atlantis Word Processor is not a MS Word replacement, and there is no comparison table. But please see the summary of Atlantis Word Processor features:

Sorry, there is no other manual. No PDF version as well.

Your comment about Atlantis not being intended as a replacement for MS Word does not quite go to the point. Its capability of opening an MS word document is a central feature. It would be nice to know, without trial and error testiing, what formatting of an MS Word document will be lost if it is opened in Atlantis. Conversely, it would be nice to know what formatting of an Atlantis document will be lost if opened in MS Word. This kind of information is important in two respects.

1. When one trades documents with other people who do not use Atlantis, what is it that will not survive the trade;

2) There is certainly a benefit to using a light word process, such as Atlantis, for a great deal of what most of us do. Your replacement comment touches on the heart of the problem -- if it is not intended as a replacement, then it is assumed that users will have both applications. If they do, they should know, at least as to major matters, what elements are not compatible as they go back and forth between the two applications.

3. On a related point, can Atlantis documents that are protected be opened in MS Word by someone who has the password?

Sometimes, on BDJ readers timely enter questions, but the answers are not forthcoming until after the offer has closed. There ought to be some way to better balance the process so that prospective purchasers are not placed in the position of having to purchase with unanswered, legitimate questions still pending. For me,.this is one of those instances.

I also find it unfortunate that a number of vendors rely exclusively on help screens and do not have a manual in pdf format. One who wishes to learn a program (as opposed to just seeking an answer to a narrow queston) ought be able to have the advantages that a pdf brings. Similarly, it would be nice to know about program operational and functional details without having to first install the program. Numerous tentative installations and removals are not likely in the best interests of a healthy computer.

Taras Push Atlantis documents (RTF, DOC, and DOCX) are supposed to be fully-compatible with MS Word. If you open any Atlantis document in MS Word, it would be rendered in both applications almost identically -

But the reverse is not true because there is no other word processor that supports all the document elements and formatting options of MS Word.

Thank you. I think this is the type of information people would like to know up front, even if or particularly if they decide to purchase Atlantis.

I don't think, however, that it is adequate for you to simply make the point that there are some MS Word features not supported by Atlantis.

For example, as the result of someone's earlier question, it was noted that tables are not supported. That means a major change in formatting when the document is opened in Atlantis, and there is no way that the Atlantis user knows that a change has occurred. It would be helpful if the vendor maintained a list of incompatible features so that users do not have to discover them by trial and error or, worse, not be aware that significant changes have occurred in a document.

Can you tell us whether forms, utilizing MS Words form fields, will generally survive intact if opened in Atlantis? Similarly, do Atlantis generated forms survive in tact when opened in Word?

If a particular feature is not mentioned in that summary, most probably the present version of Atlantis Word Processor does not have it.

But I think that the simplest way to find out if Atlantis Word Processor meets your needs is by trying it out. It would cost you nothing.

I like Atlantis.

However, you are not getting my point. If someone sends me a Word document or a Word form, and I open it in Atlantis, I have no way of knowing whether I am looking at the item, as sent, or as partially presented by Atlantis.

If someone had not mentioned the table problem, I would not know that the poorly formatted portion of a document was not what the original contained.

To tell me I have to tell for myself is like telling me to walk through a house, but not telling me that there is an unstable floor in some places. I will eventually find out, but to my sorrow.

Taras Push I afraid that the only way to find out if a given MS Word document displays in Atlantis in the same way as in MS Word (ie as intended by the document author), is by comparing the two displays. Yes, there is a short list of "major" formatting types and document elements available in MS Word and unsupported by the current version of Atlantis Word Processor. If you need that list, you can have it. But we do not claim that Atlantis Word Processor is a MS Word replacement. Actually there is no real replacement for MS Word.

Brent Price In all honesty I own the original MS Word (several versions in fact), and I just bought Atlantis when it was offered. My thought on any product is that it is only useful if you actually use it! Since I've bought Atlantis, quite honestly I've used it more than I have my office suite. Mainly because it works the way I want it to and with Word I'm constantly having to tell it that this is the way I want to write, not how word wants me to. Both Amazing products don't get me wrong but if I have a choice to write it will be with Atlantis before Word. And for budding authors out there, its a heck of a lot cheaper. That said, doesn't mean its less than what an average user might want in a fine word processor!
