Simon Loessl Hi Brian, Cam to Scan Professional can process JPG and PNG files and it is possible to generate PDF files using a PDF printer driver.
It can remove black scanning borders. For best results, put the document / book to be scanned in the middle of the scanning area so it is surrounded by a distinct border.

Thanks for getting back to me. I understand that currently, the program can only process files in JPG or PNG format (but could be output to PDF by use of a PDF printer application. Do you think you might add the ability to process native PDF files in future upgrades/versions, as I could see a real use for this program to "clean up" documents/scans that have been scanned in by scanners, as well as documents/scans that have been taken as photos from an iPhone or digital camera. Please let me know if PDF file input could be expected or a strong possability in a program upgrade. Thanks. :-)

Michael K When I first saw this program was being offered, I thought it would be perfect for James Bond but of no use to me.

Thinking more about it, it occurred to me that it could save me tearing our magazines apart when my wife spots a recipe in one of them she would like to keep. Then the possibilities kept growing on me...

I downloaded the trial last night full of hope and expectation but unfortunately it soon turned into more than an hour of frustration.

I had great difficulty in getting an outline even when using the manually controlled points and only achieved it once. Even then I was not able to turn it in to a "scan", so in other words, I have not gotten anywhere with it.

I found the documentation limited and of no use in helping me achieve a simple task of picture to scan of a magazine article.

Has anyone else had a better experience of using the trial than me?

If the developer feels so inclined, it would be really good if they would quickly put up a YouTube video example of how one gets an irregular shaped article from a magazine into a scanned formed using this program. and puts the link in this conversation.

Having now thought of a good use, I would like to buy it but not without seeing and knowing how my purpose can be achieved and I think such a video would help us all in seeing it's potential.

So, I await eagerly to hear from the developer and also from anyone else who has had a better experience with the trial than me.

1. If you have a pdf with material you want to clean up, export the relevant page or pages to a graphic format that this program can handle, then clean the material up, and then turn it back into a pdf.

2. I would find it helpful if the vendor would comment on the use of this program, not simply to clean up documents that have been photographed in less than that ideal situations, but also as regard documents and images that are simply not in good shape, regardless of where derived. For example, if one has a bunch of documents that were poorly photocopied, a high end scanner will still show up the defects of the original, unless used with software calculated to clean away or soften those defects. The same holds true of old photographs and hard copy photos that were taken in poor lighting or over or under exposed.

Michael K Unfortunately this seems to be something of a dead conversation with no participation from the vendor or even an attempt to deal with the points being raised.

Presumably that will reflect itself in a lack of sales since we do like to have our questions answered.

Tazzie At first I thought the non-response from the developer to be time zone based, but he has had time to response at the same time of day of his other responses. I therefore assume it is for other reasons that he has not responded. Whatever those reasons are, I would still like some answers and clarifications.

Michael K Hi Tazzie, yes, time zone could have been an issue but I discount that now because the smart and committed developers recognize that a Bits Du Jour promotion is a special event worth putting the time and effort into.

Many of the conversation responses run pretty continuously throughout the 24 hour period, while others remain dormant. such as this one and those are not the programs I buy.

I've already uninstalled the trial of Cam to Scan. - Pity !

Simon Loessl Good morning everybody.

Sorry for not replying to your plentiful comments. I am in China right now and could not respond to your comments because of an important dinner yesterday which took place right after my regular work.
Yes, Cam to Scan is not my "real" full-time job, actually I am working as an engineer and my projects are scattered all over the world. I had the idea for Cam to Scan in mid-2007 when I was switching locations very often and thus had to end plenty of documents (such as invoices, time sheets, diagrams...) back to my company but mostly did not have any scanner. I considered buying a portable scanner but did not want to have another part in my already tight luggage,so I was thinking about a better solution and came up with Cam to Scan.

For me I felt like I was up to something and I spent as much time as I could to develop what would be Cam to Scan in version 1.0 in late 2008.
Despite several marketing efforts, sales were slow - between one and three copies per month - and I turned my back on it one year after the launch when I got into a new "full-time-part-time-job": turning a small, a run-down hotel into an apartment house.
But sales never dropped to zero and after I was done with that house in 2010, I decided to continue development.
Admittedly, I was a bit out of luck in respect to timing with version 2.0. I should not have been in Nigeria when launching it since that project was kind of special, leaving only little time for promoting it. I also should not be in China now with this deal running, but it's not like I had any choice. Well, sorry for that.

Now let's just see were version 2.0 is going, after all it definitely has some use to it and I hope to find enough time in the future to improve it further. So thank you for you feedback.

Thanks for the background but you have still not answered any of the questions that were asked of you in this conversation.

May I suggest the following if you are serious about promoting your program:

1) Answer the questions that have been asked of you. As you will see, I could not get this program working.

2) Speak to Bits Du Jour about running this promotion again in a few days time to give folks here the opportunity to use the trial version.

3) Get the program working for us and reconsider your pricing here to make the decision easier for potential buyers to build your customer base. We regularly are able to get excellent software here for $9.95 and you may want to consider that.

4) Even at $9.95 it would not be a bargain if it does not work and I for one could not get it working so please use this conversation to help prove to your potential customers here that Cam To Scan is a worthwhile program that we should buy.

Just my thoughts but in the end the way forward is up to you and Bits Du Jour.

I am sorry that you have chosen to ignore the difficulties I had with getting the trial of your program to work or answering the questions put to you in this conversation which was intended to promote your sales..

I hope for the sake of those who chose to buy your program that they get better treatment,, attention and support from you than has been my experience.

If it's this difficult to get pre-sales support and questions answered, it is my experience that after sales support is all the more problematic You have left me with no reason to buy your program even though I described to you a potential use I had envisaged for it.

Simon Loessl Well Michael, as you might have read from my previous post, my time is kind of limited especially right now.

Before I was starting developing Cam to Scan, I indeed was thinking about how to handle support. I did not see a way to provide real-time support for everybody without quitting my job (which in retrospect would have been disastrous), so I was unsure whether to really go with it. But I came up with a solution.

You are clearly wrong with your assumption on after-sales support. For example, I was helping Hazen as quick as I could in the course of this promotion. For me, the priorities are quite clear: A Cam to Scan buyer in need of technical support has priority over somebody who has downloaded a trial. This is the way I handled it over the past years and I always could solve any technical issues that were arising.

This promotion has been interesting, but I suppose it was a bit like a straw fire. So after three years of trying in vain, I am pondering whether it makes sense to put any more effort into selling Cam to Scan. Does not look like it.

1. You spend a good deal of time talking about your personal circumstances, and practically no time discussing the functionality of the program and the issues raised by several people.

2. I assume this promotion has caused a number of people to download and try your program, and some have purchased. Your latest indication that you may give up supporting the program is unfair to those who have now invested time or money into it. I do not know how you could hope to get further sales from this site.

For what it is worth, I tried the program because I could use a program that performs the functions that this program appears to claim. However, when I attempted to use it, I found the interface to be peculiar, the functionality to be questionable and the guidance to be absent.
