Convert Proprietary CHM Help to HTML
For several years, the de facto standard in help file formats was Winhelp, that little question mark icon, introduced with Windows 3.1. Then, somewhere between the introduction of Windows 98 and the explosion of the internet, Microsoft decided to introduce a new help format, called Compiled Help (CHM). CHM was HTML help, but not. It was HTML code wrapped up in a compiled, standalone executable file, and it was a proprietary Microsoft format.
In 2003, after our armies of technical writers had collectively generated thousands of pages of CHM help documentation, Microsoft decided to discontinue support for the CHM format. Doh!
So, what do we do with all of those CHM files? We convert them, using chm2web, an easy-to-use CHM to HTML converter. The end result is the same great documentation, now available to all interested parties via any internet browser, on any platform.
Just feed any CHM help file into chm2web, and the program will automatically decompile it, extract your help topics as individual HTML files, delete unwanted headers and footers, and produce a lovely platform-agnostic, browser-agnostic HTML help system. The best part? chm2web creates a new help system that contain a tree-like table of contents, a help index, and a full-text search feature!
Revel in the glory of a true HTML help library! Your help documents converted with chm2web can be fully integrated into your existing websites, and the keywords in your documentation will increase traffic to your site from search engines! Imagine, instead of talking someone through navigating your old help system, you'll now be able to email links to relevant topics directly to your customers!
What an improvement!
