ClipCache Pro

Give Your Windows Clipboard Superpowers

We make no secret over here of our general dissatisfaction with the Windows Clipboard. After all, it's dumbed down the potential of the PC clipboard to the point that 99% of the people out there don't even consider the possibilities beyond Ctrl-C.

But all is not lost! ClipCache Pro takes the Windows clipboard and makes it relevant again. For starters, it used to be that you could only store one item on the Windows clipboard (Ok, 12 with the "new & improved" Windows clipboard). With ClipCache Pro there are no limits. That's right, you can cut, copy, and paste without fear of ever overwriting data already on your clipboard.

Once installed, ClipCache Pro runs silently (and efficiently) in the background. All clipboard activity is saved by ClipCache Pro and organized into folders. You can edit or merge text entries on the spot or perform advanced searches through the history archives. The folder implementation is flawless - you can preview clips, drag and drop clips between folders and applications, and even set limits on the number of items in each folder, so once that cap is reached, ClipCache Pro will delete the oldest clips to make room for more! Navigation is intuitive, allowing you to move forward and backward in folder browser history with ease.

Using ClipCache to do serious research? You're in luck! ClipCache now reliably records the source of your clips by capturing and storing the name of the source window!

How about this? ClipCache also features extensive text cleanup features. You know those infuriating emails filled up with ">>>>>" indentation markers? All you need to do is copy the offending message into ClipCache, and it'll remove all those arrows in a flash! But stripping email indents is only the beginning. ClipCache's cleanup function can also:

  • Remove leading spaces and tabs
  • Remove trailing spaces
  • Remove duplicate lines
  • Remove linebreaks
  • Remove empty lines
  • Strip HTML tags
  • Decode URL encoded text...
  • ...and much more. You can even create custom cleaning routines!

Even pasting is improved in ClipCache Pro! You can assign specific clips to hotkeys, for instant one-press pasting whenever you need it. PowerPaste performs a series of pastes of consecutive clips from a folder into the active application - great for filling out forms online. Enable Clipboard Routing, and everything that you copy to the clipboard is automatically pasted into another application.

The best part? ClipCache Pro is also available as a portable archive, small enough to fit on a portable USB flash drive so you can carry your clips with you wherever you go!

The latest and greatest version of ClipCache Pro comes on board with many performance enhancements, including support for Microsoft Vista's clipboard listener - ClipCache Pro brings the era of broken clipboard chains to an end!

Avi S I purchased this utility last time it was on BDJ. It does its job very well, providing all of the functionality that I need in this area. I can view my list of previous clipboard copy operations, and I can assign a keyboard shortcut to those which I wish to use often. Additionally, I like the ability to work with either fully-formatted text or plain text: for any given copied item, I can assign shortcut either to the fully-formatted version, or to a plain text version, or I can assign two shortcuts, one to each.
In fact, the configuration is easy enough that I do it as needed on the fly, even if it's not for long term use. For instance, if I'm editing a document and I see that I'm repeating three distinct sequences from time to time throughout the document, I'll put each of those into ClipCache, assign a keyboard shortcut to each, and then continue on my way, efficiently making my way through the document. Setting up these shortcuts is so easy that it's worth doing even in the context of processing a single document.
However, one issue that I have with the program is that the memory requirements are quite severe. In the course of normal program usage, I've notice clipcache shooting up to over 256MB of virtual memory. That's a huge chunk for a little utility. And while this may be fine for a user of a 64-bit OS with 16GB of RAM, for the average user who has, say, between 1GB and 2GB of RAM, that's not reasonable at all.

Richard Paris Hi. Downloaded the trial. Looks excellent. However, I would like to use ClipCache Pro with ABBYY Screenshot Reader for text and image capture. Text works fine but seem that ClipCache unable to render the Images transferred in DDB format. Is this a known limitation of ClipCache Pro? Are there any plan to support rendering of images in DDB format?
Dec 22 2011 at 12:59am
John Williams Avi S I'm surprised because ClipCache is light on memory use. It's currently using under 5MB working set (private) here.

One of the goals is to keep the program as trim as possible and use a small memory footprint. I'm not sure why you are seeing memory use of that size, maybe there is an issue, maybe you are viewing large bitmap clips or complex HTML, both which would require more memory when viewing of that clip. You could contact support and we can see what might be the cause.

Merle One Hi,
2 questions :

1/ I cannot get to pay with Paypal, it doesn't appear from the drop down list in the paiment method field (Plimus)

2/ Is it compatible with Simidude, recently proposed on BdJ
Dec 22 2011 at 2:51am
John Williams Richard Paris, DDB (device dependent bitmap) isn't rendered but DIB (device independent bitmat) is rendered.

You generally wouldn't want to store DDB so there is no rendering for it, you would want DIB though which renders fine.

Just to be clear for anyone else, ClipCache does capture images as bitmap (DIB.)

John Williams Merle One, PayPal is currently not accepted by Plimus for our sales. I'm not sure (or aware) of any incompatibilities with Simidude, but if you have any issues that we can't resolve then a refund is no problem.
XRayz Software Vendor - Dec 22 2011 at 3:07am
Merle One OK, will try the compatibility this evening.

And too bad for Paypal. That's all the stranger that Paypal logo is visible next to the selection field.

HJ B If material is clipped from a web page, it displays within the program as html, but one can toggle between html and Rich Text.

(1) If I try to edit the html display, the cut and delete options are not available. If I switch to Rich Text, they are available, and appear to work. However, if I switch back to html, the material that was edited out is restored. Then a switich back to Rich Text shows it is gone. Would I be correct in assuming that the program stores each clip in both html and rich text at the same time?

I would like to be able to edit the html version just as I would be able to do if I pasted it into an email or into Word. Can that be done within this program? If not, then I suggest that the feature be added, If you go through a bunch of material and capture a dozen clips, you generally know what you will want to edit out, as you capture a clip. If you have to immediately move it to another program to edit or if you wait until you have assembled all before you edit, then a good part of the utility of the program is lost.

I am unable to cut or delete material from a captured clip, within the Clip Cache program. Does that mean that a clipping must be transferred to some other program in order to edit it?

To be specific, I want to be able to edit text. As regards photos, I only want to be able to cut or delete a photo, or, perhaps, move it within the clipping. Also, if when copying from the original source I miss a character or a word, I want to be able to type it in, rather than go back to the source and recopy.

(2) If I display a clip within a program, and then I high lite and copy a portion of the clip, for the purpose of pasting it elsewhere, the program treats that just as it does any other use of the copy function, i.e., it stores another clip. Is there a way to copy from a stored clip, without creating yet another file?

Michael K Hi, I bought ClipMate previously and would appreciate knowing from anyone with experience of both programs, if there are compelling features in ClipCache Pro that my existing program does not have which should cause me to consider buying this software.

Thanks

John Williams Yudha Yan Kusuma, from what I can tell, Plimus isn't allowing PayPal payments from affiliates like BDJ. Plimus are in the process of changing how it integrates with Paypal so this will be temporary. Please contact me by clicking "email support" at http://www.xrayz.co.uk/support/ if you would like the offer.
XRayz Software Vendor - Dec 22 2011 at 8:23am
John Williams Michael K, why not give it a try, you can always request a refund if not happy. If you ever need Unicode, ClipCache supports Unicode, last time I checked CM didn't. It's a big issue from some.
XRayz Software Vendor - Dec 22 2011 at 8:35am
John Williams HJ B, 1) that's correct HTML and plain text are stored as two separate entities in one clip. As you can imagine editing HTML would be pretty complex, unless the text representation of it was edited instead, which isn't possible - maybe I can add that later. 2) You are right, copying from the preview pane creates a new clip, but keeps the currently edited clip in the preview window. There is no option to change how that works, but you could do: Ctrl+Q Ctrl+C Ctrl+Q which would disabled capture, copy and enable capture.
XRayz Software Vendor - Dec 22 2011 at 8:41am
HJ B @John Williams

Yes, I do mean editing the text representation, just as one would be able to do if a clip were pasted into an email.

Thanks for providing the control sequence, That will save a lot of unnecessary storage. I take it that ctrl+Q toggles the program's capture function between active and inactive.

1. I notice that, in some instances, the display tabs have the option between HTML and Rich Text and other times it is between HTML and plain text. Can you explain what the basis is upon which that occurs?

2. Is it possible to create a short cut for functions such as printing. For example, it would be convenient if there were an menu item or icon that would permit to send to the printer and another to permit me to send to pdf. It would avoid having to deal with the print menu.

3. Is it possible to select several clips to print, without first merging them?

4. It appears that if html clips are merged, they all become plain text - is that correct? So, let's assume that an article is spread over several webpages, and a I capture each page. Must I use some other application to bring the various parts together?

5. When a merge is done, the option is given to insert a text note and the beginning of each clip or between clips. As far as I can tell, the function does not seem to work as indicated. The note is only inserted before the first clip.
Dec 22 2011 at 9:18am
John Williams HJ B, here are some answers

1) Some apps put HTML+RichText+PlainText on the clipboard and some put HTML+PlainText. So ClipCache copies all those. But in ClipCache options (capture tab) you can set the option to prefer PlainText or RichText, or even both (not recommended.) This is purely to avoid duplication of text by capturing the preferred type of text that you like. I personally don't even have HTML enabled (no need for my use) and I have prefer PlainText, so I only get one entity of text, so no duplication and makes life much easier - less confusing. I would recommend it unless you really do need HTML. I wish I'd made that the default set of options.

2) Sorry no way to create shortcut functions.

3) As you have found out, merge is the way to print a batch of clips.

4) The text entity of the clip is used to merge clips when it's available. If there's RichText only, it's converted to plain text and merged. HTML isn't merged or converted so won't be merged - but the text entity of the clip is used instead if avilable.

5) I can't reproduce that merge issue, just tested here all ok. Please bear in mind that nothing extra is inserted when merging, no newlines or anything. You have to explicitly add that to the merge field using the little arrows on the right.

Joe McCormick Is your program just 32 bits that will work on a 64 bit system, or do you have it in both 32 and 64 versions?
Dec 22 2011 at 11:12am
John Williams Joe McCormick, yes there are two builds: 32bit and 64bit, the installer installs the correct one for you automatically. If you have a 64bit OS then ClipCache will take avantage of it.

SoftCollector Dear John,

I am a professional translator. Repetitiveness is not as great as with programmers as I usually translate different types of text.

How would buying ClipCache Pro speed up my work / make it easier?

I would appreciate a detailed answer, if possible.

Kind Regards,
SC

Software Guy @ Michael K

I use both CM and Clip Cache pro. Both are excellent. I tend to use CM on my desktops for documents editing and clip cache on my laptop and notebook for more casual clipping. I like the classic view of CM with a fixed window for some applications and I tend to prefer it for filling in repetitive forms - once you have set it up. I like clipcache for the hotkeys function, especially useful for ordering online. Both are powerful and take some learning to master. Give clipcache a try and see if you like it. Also worth checking out is Xrayz linkstash. It is very useful and quite powerful once you get it set up for your needs.
Don't know that I answered your question because these are two very capable clipboards. I think they are the best of the breed.
Dec 22 2011 at 5:41pm
John Williams SoftCollector, that is a big question and I don't really know how to answer it. But I can tell you that we have many users that are authors and they find ClipCache indispensible. One is a professional writer with at least 5 novels and says "It has greatly increased my productivity." I would imagine they don't do repetitive work either. You can always buy it now while the deal is running and try it.
XRayz Software Vendor - Dec 22 2011 at 6:02pm
Frank Stephens Michael K, I haven't looked at a recent version of ClipCache Pro, ClipMate has more features than I need. ClipMate doesn't handle Unicode as well, but it supports multi-user shared network databases in addition to local databases. As with all software, it's a matter of personal preference. There's no way to do a quick comparison of clipboard extenders, they all function differently and have different features (ClipMate has a huge number of features and options). Development of ClipMate has stalled, but full Unicode support is about the only additional feature which many want. ClipCache Pro supports Unicode and is still under development, although the last time I tried it some time ago it lacked some useful features of ClipMate. ClipCache Pro just now got around to capturing the name of the source, and I don't know if it has built-in spellcheck (I use that CM feature a lot). Like I said, all clipboard extenders are different with different features and different UIs.

Maybe a good browser like OPERA is more helpful for this purpose.
Look at Extras / Preferences under the "Forms" tab.

Thanks. Great suggestion. I did use opera a while back - maybe it is time to give it another spin. Was forced to move to IE8 for compatibilty with one specific program, but I no longer have that requirement, so I will download a copy of opera...thanks!
