SoftCollector Dear Developer,

Has Unicode support been added since the last time Copernic was on sale here?

Kind Regards,
SC
Feb 27 at 12:06pm
Brad Perrault Do you offer an annual maintenance support program in lieu of full price upgrades. I currently use X1 Search and I am covered under their annual maintenance, it does help defray paying for full price upgrades, especially when you need to upgrade multiple machines.

I've downloaded the product and trialed the software it's very nice and responsive, yet the lack of discounted upgrades for future versions doesn't sit well with me, but that's just me no offense implied.

Also do you have 3 or 5 user licensing options with volume discounting to help offset the single license pricing scheme for future purchases, (not necessarily referencing this promotion) post BitsDuJour?

Thanks in advance for your answers, Brad
Feb 27 at 9:07pm
Vincent Douville @SoftCollector. No, Unicode has not been added. We are currently working on a brand new major version. It is most likely going to support Unicode.
Copernic Vendor - Feb 28 at 5:22am
Vincent Douville @Brad Perrault. For Professional, the updates and maintenance is included in the license price. If we release a major upgrade, there will be a discounted upgrade price.

The volume discount start at 5 licenses. The price per license drops from 49.9 5USD to 44.95 USD.

H. H. Hallo´
trying copernic desktop search the follwoing questions occured until now:
1. is there a possibility to show folders in the result- pane too?
(x1 search has the possbility)
2, is there a possibility to index all file-types (by file-name),
so that one can find any file and folder one is looking for
(like in everything)
3. is there a possibility to sort the resultlist by size, filetype..,(x1
search, everything search-gt seem to have such features)?
Size and Filetype can be very importang criteria and just
using the file-type filter is not the same as sorting the results

In case these features are not implemented until now,
can they been exspected within the new future?
would this require an upgrade-price?

The wishlist for the development of a search utility would be:
a search-utility as fast and reliable as"everything" for all files
and folders, which are not content-indexed (working on fat32 and ntfs),
a search utility as versatile as x1-search regarding content-indexing, but more stable,
faster and allwoing to use explorer-context-rightclick-menu
and a notcie how many diskspace approxamately will be necessary for the file index

with kind regards
H.H.

PS:.

Some comments on pros and cons of some search-utilities
(very personal experience and needl, not represantative)

everything (freeware)
pos: very fast, reliable, various sorting-possibilities
cons: only ntfs (no fat32 volumes), no content-search

search-gt
pos. non-indexing, fast, various sorting features
cons: only working until xp sp3, no content search

folder-scout
pos: very handy for fast folder-search and access,
access to recent files and folders
cons: no file indexing until now, no content search

x1: pos: many features, sorting possibilites, good viewer
cons: worked quite slowly and not absolutely stable,
no possibility to start windows-explorer-context menu
directly (which can e.g. be useful, when you have
installed a file -comparison tool (beyond compare,..)
and directly want to compare the files
(this seems to be working in copernic desktop search)

K X I tried this and bought it the last time it was here on Bits. The initial drive indexing took a while, but they program has worked fine since then.

My feature request is for Copernic Desktop Search to recognize flv files, to include them in the list of videos.

If this is done, would thumbnailing also be possible?

For several years now, the bulk of videos on my computer are downloads from YouTube and other sites which use flv format.

Michael K @ Vincent - Copernic

The Copernic trial has tested my patience within the first 3 minutes of trying it and before giving up I thought I ask for some clarification as to what I might be doing wrong.

For some reason my outlook search has stopped working properly and so the ability search Outlook emails is why your program attracted my interest.

I keep my .PST file in a specific folder and when I started Copernic I note it won't search a .PST file unless it is open. So I opened it. However, when I click on the Email tab in Copernic it says "e-mail indexing is disabled". In attempting to resolve this I chose the option to "click here to modify indexing settings. Under that option it shows Outlook with a check mark against it so why would it say E-mail Indexing is disabled? Although it has a check mark against Outlook, it does not say anymore than that - shouldn't it which PST file is being indexed etc.

All in all I can't get it to index my outlook emails and as I say, this has taken me very quickly to a high state of frustration. Your help would be appreciated as to how I get it to enable what I would have thought to be a basic search function, that of e-mail indexing which is presently eluding me.

Thanks

Michael

Vincent Douville @ H H
1. No, the folders are shown at the top of each file but they are not shown by themselves.
2. To index all files, you need to add every specific file types you want to index. You can add them by going to Tools – Options – Advanced. In the advanced tab, at the top you can add/remove file types. Once you add one, it will index the file name only by default.
3. No, but it will be available in the next major version
Yes, they will be expected in the next majors releases. There will be an upgrade price for current CDS Professional license owners.
I’ve noted your feature request and forwarded them to the Product Manager.
Copernic Vendor - Feb 29 at 6:41am
Vincent Douville @ K X. Thanks for the request. You can index flv files but only the movie file name would be indexed. As for the preview, it is currently not available, but it would be definately a nice feature.
Copernic Vendor - Feb 29 at 6:43am
Vincent Douville @ Michael K
For .pst files to be indexed, they need to be open in outlook. Otherwise, they won’t be indexed. As for your email indexing, could you try and close completely CDS. To do so, right-click on the CDS icon in the notification sections of the Windows Task Bar. In the right-click menu, select exit. Then, start CDS again.
If this does not solve it, try these steps. Open your Windows Task Manager and stop the two Copernic Desktop Search Services process. Then uninstall CDS by keeping your profile and reinstall after that.
After all these steps, could you let us know if in CDS you can open the Outlook Tree and see all your Outlook folders.

Michael K @ Vincent - Copernic

I followed your instructions throughout but things are unchanged including after the re-install.

1) The only this in the Outlook tree is as it was before - "Global Address List" There are no PST files shown.
2) It still says e-mail indexing is disabled although there is a check mark against Outook in the Emails & Organizer Indexing Settings dialog box.
3) Outlook was left open.

anything else we can do or do I give up?

Thanks

Gary Robinson Sir, is your other product on sell too. Like Copernic Summarizer and Copernic Agent. If they are not are they coming to BitsDuJour soon. Thank you.

S B Desktop search can be useful. To determine my total costs ($ + responsibilities) and because of earlier comments from the vendor I have looked at the user agreement (it's below, but it may not be current). It has some sections that leave me with a few questions. (I'm personally not sure why these strange legally-binding sections even exist)

1) Do you expect that we will continue keep our registration information (address, etc.) current with Copernic as long as we have the software installed, and if not will we "not be able to access data"?

2) Why do you need access rights to our computers not already granted by law to "audit Licensee's use of the Software", and why should I grant you such rights at potentially enormous trouble and privacy risk to me and my clients?

3) I've take the time, but are you aware that busy BitsDuJour users may not be able to read the long legalize before legally committing?

From "Copernic Desktop Search Professional End user license agreement" (is it current?)
1.2 e.Registrations: ... You also agree to provide true, accurate and complete information about yourself ... and maintain and promptly update the Registration Information to keep it current and complete.

1.7 Right to Audit Supplier shall have the right, with reasonable notice to Licensee, to audit Licensee's use of the Software to assure compliance with the terms of this Agreement and any other agreements between the parties relating to the software. If an audit reveals the Licensee has underpaid fees to supplier, Licensee shall be invoiced for such underpaid fees based upon supplier's price list in effect at the time the audit is completed. Licensee shall pay supplier an additional fee of 25% of the applicable unpaid fee disclosed by the audit. If the underpaid fees exceed 5% of the license fees previously paid by licensee, then Licensee shall also pay supplier's reasonable cost of conducting the audit.

Michael K @ SB

Thank you very much for catching and pointing out such onerous terms.

I await the response with keen interest. In any event, right now this software is not indexing my outlook emails which would be key for me. In view of that and the onerous user agreement, it looks like I may have to Google alternatives but I'll hold off pending the vendors response on both issues.

Thanks

Michael

J.C. Hi,

I have bought this last time it was on BDJ. But will the new version also include Searching Journals in Outlook ?
Mar 1 at 12:56am
Avi S Hi Vincent,
Unicode is also a deal breaker for me. Please do let us know when you've upgraded your product with full unicode support, including support for right-to-left languages and search terms. At that point I will be pleased to purchased your product.

Ralph Bressler I started a trial of CDS two days ago. I am still getting "Initial scan in progress..." How long is initial? How long will this go on? Why is there no % or progress bar to give at least an estimate of the completion time?
Mar 1 at 2:11am
Vincent Douville @Ralph Bressler

It is really hard for us to know exactly the progression of the initial scan as CDS Professional needs to scan all your documents and files stored on your PC to create a map of your entire hard drive. It may take from a few minutes to several hours depending on the number of files and their size and types.
Copernic Vendor - Mar 1 at 4:28am
Vincent Douville @ J.C. The current version on sale today is the same as the previous appearance on BDJ!
Copernic Vendor - Mar 1 at 4:29am
Vincent Douville @ Michael K

As for indexing your emails, i've given you some key points but going further, you would have to send in a request for technical support. http://www.copernic.com/e...ontact.php
Copernic Vendor - Mar 1 at 4:31am
Vincent Douville @ Gary Robinson

Currently, there is no plan to offer our other software on BDJ.
Copernic Vendor - Mar 1 at 4:31am
J.C. Yes i know.

But i feel it should have a option to search all parts of Outlook (so including Journal files) because every part of Outlook can contain important information.
Mar 1 at 5:04am
Michael K @ Vincent

I will email support as you suggest.

The onerous terms in User License as pointed out by SB have not been address and since they are intrusive and onerous for a user to accept, could you please deal with issue because i they could well put me off buying the software without understanding fully why they are there.and how you use them.

Thanks

Michael
Mar 1 at 5:17am
Ralph Bressler I agree with several other potential customers that an explanation of the User License is in order. I usually just glance at the agreement and ignore this kind of language. In this case, some of the statements seem too restrictive. I made a decision to buy CDS rather than X1 BEFORE I read the User License. I now regret my decision.
Mar 1 at 7:06am
Vincent Douville @ S B

1) No but if your information changes, it is better to let us know so we can keep our records up to date. Especially for licensing, if you request your serial number with a new email address, it is harder for us to find the information.
2) We have never audited or access any of our users information and it is not in our habits to do such. I’ve taken this to our legal department and the EULA should be updated in the nearest future. I’m deeply sorry for the misunderstanding it may have caused.
3) Yes, but it is the user responsibility to read the EULA before using/purchasing. I know it is a long process but the use of a software is regulated by EULAs. With every purchase, it is like entering into a contract between two parties. There are always regulations and conditions.
As for 1.7, as mentioned earlier, it is not in our habits to audit. Hence, we have never charged or applied any additional fees. The amount the licensee paid is the amount that is recognized as revenues and we cannot charge any additional fees afterwards. You do not have to worry; there will never be additional fees.
Thank you for bringing these points up! We always welcome user input especially on sensible issues like this one.
Copernic Vendor - Mar 1 at 7:40am
barney Barnes Well,

I cannot live with the vague aspect(s) of the usage policy, but the real deal breaker is something else entirely, having to do with the functionality.

I used Copernic many moons agone, and it was damned good, but my needs changed and I quit upgrading. But if I now have to specify every extension for the search, it is well-nigh useless. Part of the benefit of a true desktop search engine is that it will find files that you were not aware existed. Copernic seems to have lost that capability. Too bad.
