Copywhiz

A Better Way to Copy Files

Have you ever tried to copy and paste a bunch of files that were in different folders? It can get a bit confusing! You have open windows plastered all over your desktop, and you're copying stuff here, then dropping it off, then copying stuff from somewhere else, then dropping it off -- not only is this time-consuming, it's extremely prone to error!

Copywhiz is a great little utility that will add some sunshine to your file copy experience in Windows. With Copywhiz, you'll be able to pick files from different folder locations, then paste them all together, plus enjoy the benefit of filtering which files to copy!

I mentioned filtering -- that's the heart of Copywhiz! You can choose to copy only new and modified files, or copy files based on a specific file name or extension. And instead of copying things one at a time from different locations, Copywhiz lets you collect files from different folders and paste them all together. Plus, Copywhiz is always watching out for you, so if there's a duplicate file, you'll always have the opportunity to review it and either overwrite or rename. A full list of files is always displayed for your review to ensure that you haven't missed anything!

Have you ever tried a bulk copy operation, only to see the whole job abort because there was an error with a single file? With Copywhiz, this will never happen to you! You will always have the chance to retry or skip a file without affecting the entire copy job!

Lastly, if you ever find yourself copying the same files over and over as part of your workflow, you'll be pleased to know that Copywhiz enables you to save that list of files and reuse it again and again!

Andrew Lea This is an awesome little app. You will wonder how you managed to put up with the meager functionality of Windows file management after using Copywhiz.I grabbed it last time it was here...
Highly recommended!

Michael R. After reading the extended and useful features here and on your website, I have some questions. I did not try the trial-version yet - I'll do later:

1) A main feature of a copy-tool should be, when copying many files (or large ones) the user probably does not want to sit nearby babysitting the copy-process. He probably would wait some seconds, to see the copy-process is starting correctly - so this might be a good time for let the user answer some questions (e.g. destination-space might be insufficent) - and than might want to go away to do other things and come some time later back and want that as many things as possible have been done.

So if a conflict arises - e.g. a file is already in a destination-directory - the arising question should not block the remaning files to be copied. (I think Win7 does this now, while XP didn't).

I think the best way would be to have parallel processes: one for the files being copied and one for the user-communication.

Perhaps, even if he did not decide and all other files have been copied, there could take place a copy in advance to a temporary file; so if he comes back finally and decides this file shold be copied it would only be a rename (and so be ready in no time). And if he decides it should not be copied, it could be just deleted (also, nearly no time to wait).

2) When telling the user, that the file already exists and the destination-file is the same as the one, which is about to be copied, do you just check the name/date or do you compare these byte for byte?

3.1) When e.g. the destination-disk is full, is it possible to copy the remaining files to another directory?

3.2) Yet another idea: Sometimes you have many files, but want them to be distributed to different destinations (e.g. SD-Cards) and know they will not fit in a single directory. Is it possible to let CopyWhiz copy these files, which would fill the current destination-directory as much as possible, i.e. let as few as possible space free there? (B.t.w can the archive-files, which can be created, also be splitted in given sizes?)

4) Reading the policy, it seems to be possible to install CopyWhiz on all my computers with a single license. I am just not allowed to use it at the very same time. Correct?

If some of the features are not yet in the current version: Are they about to be installed and available with a free upate?

Thanks a lot...

@Andrew Lea - Thank you very much.

@Michael R - Thanks for your questions

1) Currently Copywhiz does not continue copying other files while it is asking questions to the user. That is a good thought. I will take note of it.

2) Only name, date & size is checked.

3.1) This is not supported. Currently it will wait for you to free some space. It will also tell home much space to free.

3.2) Currently size management between drives & splitting of files are not supported.

4) If you are the *only* user between 2 computers, then you can purchase just a single user license and use it on both the computers. Please note that this policy is applicable to a maximum of 2 computers only.

Your feature requests are very nice & innovative. We haven't decided yet if they will be part of any future updates. We will take note of all of them, contemplate & prioritize them.

Thanks. Let us now how else we can serve you.

Can you email us your above comment so that we will track it and also inform you when the features are added?

Frank Stephens I always speak up about features that are built into Windows. Some of this applies to Vista, but I'll particularly address Windows 7. You have libraries, you can create new libraries containing whatever folders you want, with a default save folder for the library. You have filtering in Explorer, and you have the full power of Windows Search in the top-right (very sophisticated in Win7). You can enable partial matching and natural language queries in the search options. Windows Search has always supported ranges, including particular types of date ranges, but Windows 7 also supports automatic GUI selection. Windows Search supports complex queries and boolean operations.

Microsoft SyncToy 2.1 (download) can synchronize folders various ways.

Windows, especially Windows 7, has numerous ways to select recent files and folders. Listary 3 (free or paid) has also added global and application recent file/folder tracking (shows up below.file open/save dialog boxes).

Wayne Hamilton Hi
Is this possible to perform in Copywhiz

I have Drive X that contains many folders, subfolders and files of different types.

I want to copy all of the JPG files from drive X and place them into a folder in Drive Y. However I don't want to copy the folder structure from drive X only the files and place them into the same folder.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Mar 30 2011 at 8:19am
Frank Stephens Wayne Hamilton, on Vista and higher, just open Windows Explorer to Drive X, type *.jpg into the search box on the upper-right, then select the result window, hit Ctrl-A (select all), Ctrl-C (copy), open Explorer to the folder on Drive Y, hit Ctrl-V (paste).

Wayne Hamilton Hi Frank

Thanks for the input. It worked well.

Didn't perform at the speed of Copywhiz though. I'll still buy the package and hope the feature will be an option in a later release.

Stephane M Hi Gautam,

I purchased Copywhiz last time it was here (July 2010) and I am happy with it but after 8 months now, no updates have been made.
We are still at version Version 4 (Build 3) and none of the suggestions made here have been implemented yet.

Is there a new version coming soon?
If so, what new features/improvements will this version include?

Thanks.
Mar 30 2011 at 10:50am
Gautam Jain -

Thanks Frank, Wayne & Stephane.

Copying files without the folder structure is currently not supported. Frank has suggested a good method.

@Stephane,

No major version has been planned anytime soon. We may bring out minor updates. Unfortunately, we are unable to make any promises at this time. I hope you understand.
