What are people saying about Copywhiz

Pedro Laurent Can any one explain how this software compares to Teracopy? Does it have the same features plus extra not implemented in Teracopy? Thanks
Jul 27 2010 at 4:09am Copy Link
Gautam Jain Copywhiz is not a direct replacement of Teracopy. They both can co-exist together as they solve different kind of problems. While Teracopy speeds up file copy, Copywhiz provides a very easy way of selecting files from different folders and copying them all at once. Plus the filtering options in Copywhiz is very useful. It lets you filter by file extensions, folder names, file size and most important file date. You can copy only new or modified files which we require so often. About the simplicity of use, you can see the view the 'Getting Started video here: http://www.conceptworld.c...hiz/Videos More details on our homepage: Thanks.

Pedro Laurent I download it your software and I like the way it works but in my opinion you should add an option to move files as well just as an extra feature instead of switching to windows context menu of the cut and paste function. I'm taking advantage of the offer and will be getting it.
Jul 27 2010 at 5:14pm Copy Link
Gautam Jain Hello Pedro,

Thanks. Moving of files is also possible using Copywhiz.

It is available as an option when pasting. Whether you want to just 'Paste' or 'Paste & delete' (which is nothing but moving of files).

Wayne P. I have TeraCopy Pro, which is an excellent program. I have it set to replace Windows shell function. Will this software work in conjunction with TeraCopy, allowing your s/w to do the filtering/selection of the files to copy, and then allowing TeraCopy to do the copying?

That would be quite the excellent feature, but using two sets of software for the same function is not beneficial for me or my users if they conflict with each other. I notice above it's said this does not replace T/C... I understand, but how well do they exist together?

Is there a video of the two softwares working together? Or is the only way to find out to download?

Louis H I notice that when ordering CopyWiz, Notezilla and RecentX are offered at a discount as well.

My question is concerning Notezilla as I see from your website there is a more expensive portable version available. Is it possible to purchase the portable version at a discount with CopyWiz today (or in the future - if I purchase CopyWiz today?)

Thank you
Jul 28 2010 at 7:05pm Copy Link
Gautam Jain Good question Wayne.

Copywhiz does not replace the default Windows copy/paste functionality. So you can have Teracopy & Copywhiz both installed, but use them separately. You cannot select files in one product and use the other to copy them.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Mark Mullin Hi, I use a freeware to copy files from one location to another, how fast is the copy uwing copywhiz lets say on a file of 6go. What are updates policies and on how many pc can be installed a copy of copywhiz.
Jul 28 2010 at 9:10pm Copy Link
Gautam Jain Hello Mark,

All minor updates are free. Major versions will be available at discounted price to existing customers.

If you are the *only* user between 2 computers, then you can purchase just a single user license and use it on both the computers. Please note that this policy is applicable to a maximum of 2 computers only.

Copywhiz speed would be same as Windows speed of copying files. Copywhiz eases the way you select files from different folders. Plus it provides advanced filtering where in you can just copy new or modified files, files of particular type etc. Plus it has very good error handling and lets you skip files on error, skip files instead of overwriting, automatically rename duplicate files. You can copy to multiple computers or folders in a single click and many more.

gail f I have other programs from this company (RecentX) that I like. They are responsive to issues.

I am getting this, I tried it this week and love it. I often come back to my computer after starting a copying task and found it stopped in the project, waiting for me with an error message.

This can run in "silent" mode and just log anything it has an issue with. It also compares files and you can select whether to copy new files or some other attribute. I pulled together some of my "often-copied" files together and gave them some project names, so now copying is much easier by just opening the project.

René Martin Hi, Why there is no desktop icon to drag and drop files then copy them to a desired location. Because if i have to choose different files lets say located in 2 different drives and then say to copy to desktop or usb key then how to do that.
Jul 29 2010 at 2:49am Copy Link
Gautam Jain @Gail

Thanks a lot Gail

Hello Rene,

Copywhiz lets you drag and drop files on to its window. You can run Copywhiz program directly from start menu and drop the files over the window instead of selecting files from Windows Explorer's right click menu.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Stephane M Interesting piece of software.

Any plans to have a more elaborate way to manage previous saved projects instead of having to browse the folder where they have been saved to pick one?
A good start would be to have a list of them inside Copywhiz.

Also it would be also good to be able to create shortcuts directly within Copywhiz to run saved projects instead of having to use the command line and manually create shortcuts.

Jul 29 2010 at 7:49am Copy Link
Tazzie I have been trying out all three programs (NoteZilla, RecentX, and Copywhiz), and love them all.  I especially love how I can search for files and simply right click then choose the copy option under Copywhiz.  When I am finished with finding and copying all files, I can simply go into Copywhiz and finish the task.  Much easier than having to make a new temp folder to put files into for copying, esp when the copying isn't to be done right away.  There is a file manager that has an option of dragging files into a temp directory for copying or whatever, but Copywhiz is more sophisticated and saves me from having to have a whole program installed primarily for one option that I really like.

Gautam, I plan to get Copywhiz, and would really love to get all three programs.  There is just so much that can be done with all of them, and NoteZilla is just amazing ... everyone should check out all three of these programs.  Is it ok to email you after I purchase Copywhiz for a discount on the other two programs?  I would so appreciate the opportunity to get all three, which I normally couldn't afford.   Thanks!!!

mark foley Hi,

I used to use Pikybasket and this is a nice evolution of that.  One thing I always thought was needed was the idea of having more than one basket.  Example: Let's say I'm going through my downloads folder, I select all the folders relating to programming and go 'copy to 'programming' basket.'  Then I select the movies and select 'copy to movies basket'.  Then I could go to the destination folder and go 'paste movies basket here.'

That would be a great addition.  Filtering by file types etc doesn't really achieve this as things like movies, apps etc have folders consisting of many file types.

I'll of course be purchasing it in the meantime!

Jul 29 2010 at 12:46pm Copy Link
Gautam Jain @Stephane

Thanks the nice suggestions. I have taken note so that we can try to add them in the next version. Probably we can have a whole list of most recently used files so that a project can be easily picked.

Thanks for the appreciation. It is really encouraging. When you try to buy Copywhiz from here, you will be offered Notezilla & RecentX at discounted price. You can add them also to the cart.

Thanks for expressing your feedback. Good idea. I have taken note it.

And do not forget to add a feature to create shortcuts we can put on desktop for example to easily run saved projects ... if you like the idea of course. :-)

Thanks again.

Bob S Hi, I purchased PikySuite in May 2009 when it was offered on Bits du jour.  What is the upgrade policy?  Can I upgrade to the current version or should I purchased Copywhiz now?   Thank you.
Jul 29 2010 at 4:17pm Copy Link
Gautam Jain @Stephane

We launched Copywhiz just about 2 months back. So it will take a while until we launch new version. But if more people request for the feature that you asked, we may include the feature in one of the minor updates itself.

Noted your request for making resizable windows.

Since you are an existing user of PikySuite you can upgrade to Copywhiz directly for $9.95 instead of purchasing from here. You can do this from the Upgrade link on Copywhiz page:

Jul 29 2010 at 4:44pm Copy Link
Stephane M Ok thanks Gautam! Just purchased it.
Jul 29 2010 at 4:59pm Copy Link
Gautam Jain @Bob S

PikySuite had three sub-products Piky Basket, Piky Folders & Piky Tools. We have discontinued Piky Folders & Piky Tools as many features in them already exist as part of new Windows OSes (Vista & 7). And re-designed Piky Basket with a totally new look, easy of use and new name called Copywhiz

@Stephane M

Thanks Stephane! I was just wondering why you haven't purchased yet and there you are!

Michael R. After reading the extended and useful features here and on your website, I have some questions. I did not try the trial-version yet - I'll do later:

1) A main feature of a copy-tool should be, when copying many files (or large ones) the user probably does not want to sit nearby babysitting the copy-process. He probably would wait some seconds, to see the copy-process is starting correctly - so this might be a good time for let the user answer some questions (e.g. destination-space might be insufficent) - and than might want to go away to do other things and come some time later back and want that as many things as possible have been done.

So if a conflict arises - e.g. a file is already in a destination-directory - the arising question should not block the remaning files to be copied. (I think Win7 does this now, while XP didn't).

I think the best way would be to have parallel processes: one for the files being copied and one for the user-communication.

Perhaps, even if he did not decide and all other files have been copied, there could take place a copy in advance to a temporary file; so if he comes back finally and decides this file shold be copied it would only be a rename (and so be ready in no time). And if he decides it should not be copied, it could be just deleted (also, nearly no time to wait).

2) When telling the user, that the file already exists and the destination-file is the same as the one, which is about to be copied, do you just check the name/date or do you compare these byte for byte?

3.1) When e.g. the destination-disk is full, is it possible to copy the remaining files to another directory?

3.2) Yet another idea: Sometimes you have many files, but want them to be distributed to different destinations (e.g. SD-Cards) and know they will not fit in a single directory. Is it possible to let CopyWhiz copy these files, which would fill the current destination-directory as much as possible, i.e. let as few as possible space free there? (B.t.w can the archive-files, which can be created, also be splitted in given sizes?)

4) Reading the policy, it seems to be possible to install CopyWhiz on all my computers with a single license. I am just not allowed to use it at the very same time. Correct?

If some of the features are not yet in the current version: Are they about to be installed and available with a free upate?

Thanks a lot...
Mar 29 2011 at 8:02pm Copy Link
Gautam Jain -

@Andrew Lea - Thank you very much.

@Michael R - Thanks for your questions

1) Currently Copywhiz does not continue copying other files while it is asking questions to the user. That is a good thought. I will take note of it.

2) Only name, date & size is checked.

3.1) This is not supported. Currently it will wait for you to free some space. It will also tell home much space to free.

3.2) Currently size management between drives & splitting of files are not supported.

4) If you are the *only* user between 2 computers, then you can purchase just a single user license and use it on both the computers. Please note that this policy is applicable to a maximum of 2 computers only.

Your feature requests are very nice & innovative. We haven't decided yet if they will be part of any future updates. We will take note of all of them, contemplate & prioritize them.

Thanks. Let us now how else we can serve you.

Can you email us your above comment so that we will track it and also inform you when the features are added?

Frank Stephens I always speak up about features that are built into Windows. Some of this applies to Vista, but I'll particularly address Windows 7. You have libraries, you can create new libraries containing whatever folders you want, with a default save folder for the library. You have filtering in Explorer, and you have the full power of Windows Search in the top-right (very sophisticated in Win7). You can enable partial matching and natural language queries in the search options. Windows Search has always supported ranges, including particular types of date ranges, but Windows 7 also supports automatic GUI selection. Windows Search supports complex queries and boolean operations.

Microsoft SyncToy 2.1 (download) can synchronize folders various ways.

Windows, especially Windows 7, has numerous ways to select recent files and folders. Listary 3 (free or paid) has also added global and application recent file/folder tracking (shows up below.file open/save dialog boxes).

Wayne Hamilton Hi
Is this possible to perform in Copywhiz

I have Drive X that contains many folders, subfolders and files of different types.

I want to copy all of the JPG files from drive X and place them into a folder in Drive Y. However I don't want to copy the folder structure from drive X only the files and place them into the same folder.

Any help would be appreciated.

Mar 30 2011 at 8:19am Copy Link
Frank Stephens Wayne Hamilton, on Vista and higher, just open Windows Explorer to Drive X, type *.jpg into the search box on the upper-right, then select the result window, hit Ctrl-A (select all), Ctrl-C (copy), open Explorer to the folder on Drive Y, hit Ctrl-V (paste).
Mar 30 2011 at 8:51am Copy Link

Thanks for the input. It worked well.

Didn't perform at the speed of Copywhiz though. I'll still buy the package and hope the feature will be an option in a later release.

Stephane M Hi Gautam,

I purchased Copywhiz last time it was here (July 2010) and I am happy with it but after 8 months now, no updates have been made.
We are still at version Version 4 (Build 3) and none of the suggestions made here have been implemented yet.

Is there a new version coming soon?
If so, what new features/improvements will this version include?

Thanks Frank, Wayne & Stephane.

Copying files without the folder structure is currently not supported. Frank has suggested a good method.

No major version has been planned anytime soon. We may bring out minor updates. Unfortunately, we are unable to make any promises at this time. I hope you understand.

SoftCollector Dear Gautam,

I bought Notezilla Portable on August 17, 2011 as part of the promotion here, and it seems that since then no new versions have been released. I have just downloaded the Portable version from your site and it is the exact same size as the one I got one year ago. I also remember that some customers, who had been keeping an eye on the software longer than me, complained back in 2011 that there had been no new versions for years.

So, here is my question: apart from these one-per-year sales on it seems that Notezilla is not actively developed. What are your plans regarding the software titles you sell? Are they going to be actively developed?

Kind Regards,
Nov 10 2012 at 2:29am Copy Link
Gautam Jain -

Your concern is very valid.

There has been a delay in launching the new version of Notezilla. We really apologize for that. Till last year, I was the only one developing it. But now we have a team as we are adding some bigger & modern requirements to the new version - syncing & mobility. It is being actively developed. We are in final finishing & testing phase of the new version Notezilla. We will launch it soon.

Amit Hello,

1) I would like to know if this feature is currently in there - I would like to copy / move files from one location to other - but preserving all date attributes as same ie. all dates - creation / modified etc. are kept same.
Is this feature there, right now ?
or if not then can it be included soon ?

2) And is there the option to ask on what action to take if a similar name file is in the destination folder - and with like option to rename / rename all / skip / skip all, being asked if it finds a same filename match.

3) Does copywhiz save a log of all copied / moved transfers.

Nov 10 2012 at 1:58pm Copy Link
SoftCollector Gautam,

Thank you for your answers.

1. I own TeraCopy and it comes with Directory Opus integration (both copy and move functions have scripts and buttons inside DO). Is Copywhiz compatible/integratable in DO?

Kind Regards,
Nov 10 2012 at 2:19pm Copy Link
Gautam Jain -

1) Copywhiz currently preserves "modified date". But does not preserve creation/access dates. We don't have that option. We will take note of this request, but I am afraid we cannot commit any release date for this feature.

2) Yes, Copywhiz provides an option to rename either the source file or destinatination file, skip if identical, skip if newer etc options. Please click on screenshots link on the page for more clarity.

1) Yes, Copywhiz should work with Directory Opus is you allow Windows context menu items to be shown in the right click menu. You will have to uncheck the DO option "Hide Windows items on file context menus (shift overrides)" and try or hold the shift key and right click on the file to see Copywhiz menu.

Amit I would like to say - that you keep all these options - date etc - as an on / off option only - and not like that we cant change it / choose between the two.

and does peruser license - allows on all personal computers ?

M M I was looking forward to this offer, since I need the pause/resume functionality. However, not preserving dates while moving the files across volumes is no-go for me. I would even add that I need that to work with folders as well, so if I move a tree both creation and modified dates are maintained also for folders. As of now I am only aware of Ms' Robocopy doing that (I use Easy Robocopy as GUI), but it does not have the pause functionality (nor my DO v9). Let's see Copywhiz next time here on BdJ.

Yes, Copywhiz is a much streamlined upgrade to PikySuite. We have removed the PikyFolders & PikyTools part PikySuite to make Copywhiz more focused, less confusing & professional.

Matt Hi Gautam Jain.

Could you please answer Amit's question from above?

"3) Does copywhiz save a log of all copied / moved transfers?"

Nov 13 2012 at 9:47am Copy Link
Gautam Jain -

Copywhiz does not automatically save logs for all transfers. But if any file is not copied successfully, it shows the error list & also allows you save the log.

Unfortunately, Windows Explorer does not directly allow any plug-ins to use hotkeys. We are trying hard to get through that. Hopefully, we will add it in the next version.

Also, I just noticed that Copywhiz does not remember where the last project file was either opened from or saved to. It always reverts to the default "...AppData\Roaming\Conceptworld\Copywhiz\Projects".

This is a nuisance in continually changing the path to "Documents\Copywhiz\Projects" when opening or saving projects.

I save all of my data (and project files) on my "D" drive. I hope you could change this. Thank you.

Sync (Size/Date)

Sascha Tuberkel Do you know TeraCopy and does Copywhiz also accelerate copying processes like mentioned program?
May 6 2013 at 1:34pm Copy Link
Karl Valentin I installed the trial and there is nothing mentioned about the 30 days or that the program will stop to work properly after this amount of time. So please tell me what will happen after the trial ends and why is it not shown in the programs UI.
May 6 2013 at 8:35pm Copy Link
Gautam Jain @Babe

The core program is still 32-bit. We have a separate 64-bit installer because the Context Menu part is in 64-bit. It is required to work in 64-bit Windows Explorer.

Copywhiz does not accelerate. It uses the internal Windows functionality. Copywhiz provides ways to easily pick, filter, skip, replace, rename, compress files while copying. And more :)

The program will show a popup only after few days of usage. Since the popup is annoying, we don't want to show it right from the beginning. This page mentions that it is a trial. Our website mentions that it is a 30 day trial.

Thanks every one :)
Conceptworld Corporation - May 6 2013 at 10:35pm Copy Link
Karl Valentin Thank you for the answer, I did know that it is a trial, it was just uncommon to me that it is not shown right away.

I still have one comment about the HIDE button, after using it the program is running as an invisible process. To bring it up again I had to launch the program again, but it was not starting quicker.
What is the main functionality of this button?
May 7 2013 at 7:12pm Copy Link
Gautam Jain The hide button hides the Copywhiz window so that you can select & pick files/folders directly from Windows Explorer using the context menu (right click on any file & folder).

To show the Copywhiz window back, you would right click inside Windows Explorer and just select "Paste Advanced...". This is less intuitive, we understand.

In few weeks we will make some simple but important changes to the UI so that it is more intuitive. Thanks.
Conceptworld Corporation - May 7 2013 at 10:08pm Copy Link
Guy Good @Gautam Jain

Does Copywhiz have any sort of checkbox feature where I could
mark file1, file3 and file 5 in one folder as selected. The next step I may wish to go into another folder and select various files from that as well. When finished, it would remember all the checked file names and perform the copy operation requested. Using a
normal file manager, it tends to unselect files when I move to another folder without holding down the Ctrl key.
May 8 2013 at 8:11am Copy Link
Gautam Jain @Guy Good,

Not a check box feature. You will need to hold a Ctrl key and select using Copywhiz context menu in Windows Explorer.

Then you can go to another folder any select other files. When you do this, the previously selected files do not get cleared. This way, you can select multiple files from various folders and copy at once.

Gary Mugford I'm not sure what limitations the program has in Trial mode, but I did give it a try and am satisified with it's performance in copying mode. I rarely (if ever) have need for it's more extended copying features. But I like what it does in straight copying and moving. But it takes too many steps.

I do a LOT of dragging and copying with FastCopy being the current mass copier of choice. It's available through drag and drop's right-click menu. CopyWhiz does not appear. Is THAT a Trial limitation or is CopyWhiz always a location-click-destination-click-RightClick utility only?
May 20 2014 at 6:46am Copy Link
Gautam Jain -
Hello Gary,

The trial version is exactly same as the paid version. There are not limitations.

If you choose "Run Copywhiz" option from the menu, you will be able to drag & drop items to be copied and also drag & drop folders to which the items need to be copied. This method does not require lot of steps.
Conceptworld Corporation - May 20 2014 at 6:52am Copy Link
Gary Mugford Thank you for your response. I immediately found the Run CopyWhiz menu choice and the all-encompassing dialog that results. Unfortunately, it's just added layers to accommodate complicated requests. I have a lot of short-cut destination links in my xplorer2 file manager. Right-drag, drop and choose copy or move (fastcopy). End of work. CopyWhiz makes that operation more complicated.

And there the trial ends. I might end up buying CopyWhiz thru this offer. I've got some more thinking to do. It certainly handles those rare situations with aplomb. The time it saves when they come up, comes awfully close to the valuation. And the utility takes up only one line of the system menu, a somewhat untamed monster that grows with each utility added. However, the multi-click process, however streamlined with it's extra dialogs, simply does not make this a replacement for FastCopy (and TeraCopy, for that matter).

But it IS obvious that this is a nice piece of coding. You might hear from me later today.
May 20 2014 at 7:11am Copy Link
Gautam Jain -
For a simple copy/paste one can use Windows copy or TeraCopy or FastCopy.

But Copywhiz fills different set of requirements. It complements the above utilities.

Loco78 * Hi, I have a question I have Copywhiz version 4 per month to be released update to version 5. What is the purchase price to upgrade to a newer version Copywhiz - 50% of the price? It is simply better to buy today in the promotion of version 4 with the possibility of an update after the release?
Feb 10 2016 at 5:36am Copy Link
Gautam Jain Thanks @Loco78. The upgrade price would be mostly $19.95 (full price - $29.95) for existing customers. Not yet decided. But we may offer a lesser price also depending on the situation. Not yet fixed. It will be somewhere between $14.95 and $19.95. Sorry to cause more confusion.
Conceptworld Corporation - Feb 10 2016 at 5:57am Copy Link
Loco78 * So it is impossible to state clearly whether it is better to wait to buy a released update because you can even pay about $ 2 more than today's prices. Like RecentX I care to have the latest version of the current rally unless I decide to purchase a license today.

M User Dear Gautam Jain,

In 2010 (!) you wrote on a comment: Noted your request for making resizable windows.

We're 2017 and still not resizible. Unbelievable, in fact: this is essential. A shame-'bug' anno these times. Please fix this asap.

In May 2014 you wrote: As of now we don't have a portable version of Copywhiz. We plan to make one in the near future.

We haven't seen much requests or annoyance-report for resizable window. And hardly anyone has requested for portable version. Since we had many other more important features to implement, we haven't implemented both these features. Cannot commit any dates as of now.

Glen Hilton Hello Gautam Jain

M User makes a valid point with the resizable window. Who wouldn't like the idea? Having to scroll horizontally to see all the grid details is restrictive and a little annoying. True, many users couldn't be bothered emailing suggestions though a simple site checkbox vote for requested improvements would be simple for everyone. Also no "open", explorer menu or thumbs on the preview entries.

Feb 15 2017 at 12:08pm Copy Link
RS I second Harald Vogel's remarks. I, too, am an owner of a v4 license, so I don't see why existing customers should be expected to pay more to upgrade than new users. Indeed, I think there should be a further incentive to current owners to upgrade!

Conceptworld Corporation - Feb 15 2017 at 3:14pm Copy Link
RC I installed it again, gave it another try, but ended up removing the program. I thought perhaps the columns could be resized enough to make the program useful for me. For example, if I am familiar with my filetypes, I don't really want the "Type" column. But I can only squeeze or slim down the "Type" column slightly. In other words, the program mostly prevents you from resizing the columns to minimize one column of information and maximize the other. And you can't rearrange the columns. So, no go.
Feb 15 2017 at 6:43pm Copy Link
Gary Smith @Gautam Jain,

>Other than inability to resize, please look at various new features Copywhiz ...
You might be missing the point.

If I consider a new vehicle that is fast, can fly, and offers me unlimited Bandwidth while enjoying the vehicle, but the person that designed the vehicle was a very short person, and the seat will not go back far enough for me get in the driver's seat with my average length legs, and I comment to the designer what I consider a flaw, how should I respond to the designer when they tell me, "Other than inability for the seat to be adjustable to people with longer legs than myself, please look at various new features, such as an electronic security system that will prevent anyone from breaking into your vehicle while you are enjoying driving it?"

Until it is adjustable to my liking (like other applications), it is pointless to point out to me the many wonders it offers.

Dennis McKay I looked at this yesterday and passed on it because of the window resizing problem. Because you are going to give it a priority I have decided to purchase it. Whether I remain a customer will depend on the support you give the software. Not only the windows resizing but also I noted one user who wanted the ability to delete a column he doesn't need and that is something I think all software should have the ability to do. Nothing like taking up screen space with unneeded information.

But, I already try twice (with the correct elemenst for payment from Fastspring and in both cases I get a reject from the bank 'impracticable transfer'. There is enough provision on my bankaccount and I can pay other things without a problem.
I even can't pay in EUR ... it's only in USD - while the bank is only allowed EUR. It's impossible to buy for me. Never had this experience before with any deal on BDJ. Country = Belgium. Don't know what to do now.

But I can't pay in Dollar, only EUR. Between my two attempts to buy RecentX and Copywhiz combi-deal I pay another piece of software with bank transfer (in Euro) to MyCommerce (Digital River) and received the licence already in the meantime. Glen Hilton Hello Hello Gautam,

Good to see the window resize issue will finally be implemented. The new V5 keyboard shortcuts work in windows explorer though not Dopus. Are you able to provide a Dopus solution for similar integration. "Terra Copy" used a command for the toolbar (not just the context menu) .
Feb 16 2017 at 6:09pm Copy Link
D Rogers Maybe I will buy at a later date, when I see the resizable window problem fixed.
Feb 16 2017 at 7:57pm Copy Link
HJ B An annoying problem, when copying in windows, relates to an attempt to copy a large number of files. If a file name is too long or if the file has certain other defects, windows will not copy it. The copying process stops until you press a button telling it to proceed. This may happen several times in one bulk copy effort. However, windows gives no facility for marking the file or easily making a copy of the file name and location, so that you can go back to it after the copying is completed, fix the file problem and copy it to the location it ought to be.

Does this copy program remedy that problem? If not, do you have a plan to address it in a future version?
Feb 17 2017 at 12:20am Copy Link
Gautam Jain -
@HJB, Copywhiz has an option to skip same errors. So if you get an error, you can skip same errors so that you are not prompted again for the same error. I think this feature will help you to complete the copy process using Copywhiz and later rectify the files with errors. Copywhiz will show you the log file with list of errors. If you have a similar case on your system, you can try copying those files using Copywhiz before deciding to purchase.

@GlenHilton, I haven't researched on short cut keys or similar integration for Directory Opus.

@SUser, looking in to this issue. Will email you.

Hi, Copywhiz is not an every day utility unless you use the automatic backup feature. However, it can save several hours and tedious effort when you need to do a file copy task. Because it allows you to copy just new & modified files, copy only specific type of files etc. Really useful stuff!

bvssunnydale Hi, does this allow command line operation? and how is this different, in abilities, from xxcopy? Thanks.
Aug 2 2017 at 6:11am Copy Link
Keyboard Cowboy I was intrigued by this product and since your site says each license covers two computers, I bought three licenses to cover my "fleet" of six computers. When I installed the first copy on a computer, I glanced at the "license agreement" (yeah, who reads those things?) and noticed it says the program can be used on ONE computer. Which is correct?
Aug 2 2017 at 7:57am Copy Link
Gautam Jain -
@bvsunnydale - Yes, it allows command line. The command line allows one to run a saved Copywhiz project. Copywhiz is similar to xxcopy. Copywhiz has an easy to use user interface for regular users.

HJ B A serious defect in the Windows copying function relates to filed that cannot be copied because the file name is too long. That is what the error message says, but in most instances it is because the path to the file is too long. Windows throws up the name too long error message and only shows the name of the file, without the path. It gives you no option except to bypass the copying of that file. In a substantial copying job, such as backing up a disk, you have no way of knowing where the file is. The problem becomes substantial if a single copying job includes a number of such errors. The best you can do is scribble down the file names and then try to correct the problem after the copy job is over. With some file names, such as "readme" that becomes near impossible. Moreover, correcting the problem entails not only finding the file but also manually locating the place on the copy where it ought to go.

Does copywhiz address this problem?

Does anyone know of a utility that will examine a computer's files and provide a report as to files that fall into this category?

A second problem relates to large quantities of small files. It appears that, in Windows, a large quantity of small files will take far, far longer to copy than a few large files, even though both copying jobs involve the same number of bytes. I understand that the overhead issues in the two types of jobs are different, since each small file its own separate overhead that is equivalent to the overhead of each large file. Does copywhiz make an effort to address this problem?

Short of solving the problem, it would be great if there were a utility that analyses for problems such as this and alerts the user to it before the copying process starts, with the option to circumvent the problem (by compressing folders of small files or by not copying them).

Finally, I wish I knew of a utility that would assess drives and score them as to how friendly they are for the purpose of copying from or copying to. Drive speed, drive format, drive buffer, and the computer's own system could be taken into account in arriving at a score. In this way, the user can make an intelligent decision to retire or not use a drive. In shopping for both internal and external hard drives, I find that the published specs are not really informative as to how well a drive will perform in the copying task.

Robert W Does Copywhiz have "Cut" or Move type of functionality? Basically copy the files to the target, and then delete the original.

I guess recent Windows OS does solve the long file name problem. Copywhiz also handles long file names. However, we aren't aware whether there may be multiple causes for this error. So we aren't sure if it covers all such causes.

Copywhiz can generate log file so that you can know the complete path of the file.

Speed of copying multiple small files will always be less than single big file due to the design of regular HDD and file system.

Yes, it such cases it may be better to compress them into a single file and then copying it.

Kelly Hamblin Regarding the choice to copy or paste only new or modified files: Is that determined by the date/time stamp, or does Copywhiz use the Archive bit?

Also, does the application come with a Help file or is the help only online?

@HJB, Plus Copywhiz lets you to skip same error so that you are not prompted again and again.

@KellyHamblin, It checks file date/time stamp only.

Help is only online.
