Mike K Great app, I can recommend it.

jhn I bought direct folders almost a year ago. I still use it every day.

A B I just tried DF and was very very pleased that you can resize "open" dialogs, that is, make them almost full-screen. Then you can show "details" in them, instead of the usual lists. Then you can, by rightclick, make disappear the "size" and the "accessed" columns, to make it show the "comments" column instead. This is more than just great for a start.

But I have four problems with this:

- Next time, within the same application, within the same working session, I open the "open" dialog, the size is the new one, but my "comments" column has gone, whilst the unwanted "size" and "accessed" columns show up again. Did I miss something?

- With such a setting (details view instead of list view), such a big "open" dialog window is not really taken advantage of, since it's a narrow list within the left border of the window, three quarters remaining blank. Of course, I know that every other program showing these "details" struggles with the same problem, which is the inability to show several columns of files side by side within the same window; it's only in the list view that these multiple columns of file names are possible there. But of course, it would have been great if DF had a way to make this possible.

- With hundreds of files within a directory, and within that "details" view, even a sized-up "open" dialog will not show more than some 40 files, that is one height of it. So, when I type an "e" within the entry line of the "open" dialog, I expect DF to make all files from beginning with a, b, c and d to vanish (= automatic scroll to e...), so that I can choose from the list of files beginning with an e (and perhaps f, g, h... if there's enough space for them), but such an entry of a letter does nothing, so in order to see the "e..." files, you must scroll to the "e's" by hand.

- If such a function is implemented within DF, would it be possible to make it even better, by offering an option that the entry line works as an incremental search? That is to say, if I enter an "e", only the perhaps 30 files beginning with an "e" would be displayed, and if I enter an "n" then, only the perhaps 4 files beginning with "en" would be displayed, and if I do 2 backspaces, the "n" and then the "e" would be deleted from the line, and the window would show all files, beginning from the "a..." files, again?

Would be nice to have your point of view with regards to these features that would make DF perfect (the first problem being a bug, I suppose?)!

Eduardo Amado @A B
Try Listary Pro, better (maybe the best) in this segment.
Jan 18 at 5:42am
Genie au Travail I'm agree with Eduardo Amado.
Listary Pro is under development with very good support.
Direct Folders has not been update since several years now and it is bugged.
I have purchased the two software and I can tell you that Listary Pro is better.

A B Please let me add that there's an intermediate solution between points 3 and 4, and that instead of dreaming of things rather complicated to implement, it's better to have things almost as good, but that are really there, at your fingertips.

Point 3 : automatic scrolling of the files list to the first entry beginning with the character in question

Point 4 : incremental search within the entry line (understood that in all these cases, we're not speaking of changing directories, but that entries there apply to file names within the current directory)

Intermediate point 3.5 : not yet incremental search, but more than just automatic scrolling : an option that entering a single character (= not followed by any more character within the next second or so) will only show the files beginning with that character : in the above-mentioned example then, only the 30 or so "e..." files will be shown, not those "f..." files following them in the complete list, even if there's enough room to show them. (A backspace then, deleting the single character, would again show the complete list.)

Thank you very much for your opinion on these suggestions. (Possible roadmap : point 1, point 3.5 (point 3 if much more easy to implement, but 3.5 would be sooo much neater)... and eventually even point 4? I suppose that point 2 will probably be impossible for Win-internal reasons...)
Jan 18 at 9:45am
A B Thank you very much for the hint, EA and GauT, but I need such functionality WITHIN the normal "open" dialog, not somewhere else. I (superficially) trialled Listary and wasn't impressed (perhaps because I abandoned the trial too early).

I'm astonished my second post (this one being my third) was censored, today where even bdj posts an against-censorship screen above its opening page, and I would like to say that I'd be happy to buy if point 1 was cleared soon and perhaps point 3 introduced somewhere in 2012, and that I'd be very happy if you, EA and GauT, were NOT right by saying that for years there hasn't been any more development (if I understand well). On donationcoder.com (not accessible today since they don't bother with a welcome screen, they do total self-censorship today outright), DF has WON their comparison... years ago, I must admit. Here's my second post again, would be nice to NOT BE CENSORED on a day where the owners of this site protest against censorship, right?:

Jon Spain Does it work in Windows 7 64-bit (I can't see it mentioned on the produce website)?
Jan 19 at 4:06am
Constantin Florea @Jon The application works on Windows 7 64 bit. Please notice the Platforms section which is right under the Buy Now button

Also please notice this URL:

pumpkin phora Hi, does the ClickSwitch feature work now with Firefox 3.6 and above? If not yet (sigh), will you be able to have a working solution in the near future?
Jan 19 at 4:21am
Ray Costanzo I have to say that I'm very hesitant to ever try software that has screenshots from Windows XP, here in the year 2012.
Jan 19 at 5:06am
Michael K I can't overstate how invaluable I find these conversations as part of my decision making process as to whether to buy or not.

I am also appreciative that Roger and Nico don't edit out the less than enthusiastic comments.

Thank you to both Eduardo and Genie for their thoughts here and in other conversations, I know Bits are aiming to make sales but leaving room for honest opinions be they positive or negative adds to my confidence when I do make a purchase.

I also appreciate the heads up on alternatives worthy of investigation and again my hat is tipped to Roger and Nico for leaving them in the conversations.

I think I have purchased over 50 pieces of software from Bits promotions and most of this software I'd never heard of before. The frankness of the conversations has played a major part in helping me make these purchases.

So far in all but one of these purchases I have been very happy and only in one instance do I feel let down and perhaps even misled by the developer.

Thank you Bits and thank you to all the great contributors to the conversations.

Thanks

Pavi Johnson Hi, having trouble getting Direct Folders to work in Office 2010 open/save dialogs. It seems to flash and then not work. Using Windows 7 64 bit... any ideas?

Thanks, /Pavi
Jan 19 at 8:09am
John H I purchased Direct Folders a long time ago and found it to be a very useful program.
Jan 19 at 9:17am
pumpkin phora I would appreciate if the developer could take the time and care to answer my question above about the compatibility of the Clickswitch feature (open save dialog switching) with Firefox 3.6 and above as it stopped working since Firefox 3.5.
Jan 19 at 9:53am
D Taylor I am a long-time registered user of Direct Folders and I find it an incredible time-saver! I can't imagine using my computer without it. Tech support has always been quick to respond to my questions. I haven't seen it mentioned, but their website says that all their software comes with a lifetime license. I would highly recommend that you grab it at today's price and don't look back!
Jan 19 at 10:55am
James Kenney I can highly recommend their other product, TeraCopy,
I have purchased it, even though the free version does everything I need it to do. I have also recommended it to everybody I know!

On the other hand, in this product category, I think Listary has them beat.

It seems they are developing for Android.

This app is near to be abandonware.

Again, try Listary Pro folks.
Jan 19 at 12:02pm
Jeff Freeman @A B Just select any file in open dialog and start typing, Windows will select file with first matching letters. But a separate search field in DF is a good idea, thanks!

I'm planning to release a new beta of TeraCopy today or tomorrow and start working on Direct Folders.
Code Sector Vendor - Jan 19 at 3:26pm
Jakub Chodorowicz I have to agree with Genie au Travail - I've first used and bought DF, but it hasn't been updated for a very long time, it doesn't work very well with Directory Opus 10 and all my support requests were just ignored. Listary has on the other hand good support and is recently often updated.

Roger Thomasson @ Michael K

Thanks for the good words! We don't always please everybody with the way we moderate, but balanced, polite discussion truly is the goal :)
Bits du Jour Admin - Jan 19 at 3:58pm
Walter Lindrum Direct Folders is yet another eXCELLENT Code Sector program which I shall be buying.

I do have some questions & feedback, but I've posted them on your web-site #MJZ-758-49072
Jan 19 at 4:05pm
Jon Spain @Constantin

Apologies, I didn't look at the Buy button and the download link on the website seemed to go straight to the EXE file, which I can't download here so I didn't visit that page. OK, I've ordered it.

LN108 As others have noted, this program hasn't been updated for more than a year, and it's still buggy in Windows 7 and Firefox. The developers need to demonstrate that they are not just flogging software that they have lost interest in developing.
Jan 19 at 6:08pm
David Powelstock Ditto Michael K's comment about Bits. Another alternative, QuickJump (techhit.com), which I've happily used for a while--I think I bought it on Bits!
Cheers,
David
Jan 19 at 7:39pm
Walter Lindrum LOOK, LN108 and others, I do understand your point about continuing development and compatibility with mainstream programs.

ESPECIALLY, as has been pointed out recently by somebody in the recent PRAYAYA promotion, a great deal of new notebooks are ONLY being supplied WiTH WiNDOWS 64BiT, so it makes the whole issue about making 64BiT compatibility all the more important.

BUT we are long talking about a SiNGLE USER spend of $10, which for a lot of people - at least in westernized countries, is not a lot of money these days

________________________________________

More NoTEBOOK's were sold last year than DeSKTOP PC's (at least as far as name brands are concerned), so the push is really on now-a-days by computer manufacturers, chip makers and even Microsoft to get 64BiT publicly widespread and not just an option that geeks would buy. HaPPY CoMPUTING

Walter Lindrum ABSOLUTELY Pathetic Support ... I.M.H.O.

I opened a TiCKET (as mentioned above #MJZ-758-49072) 19 January 2012 12:52 PM according to CodeSector, and 6-to-7 days later I'm still waiting for a non-automated (in other words HUMAN) REPLY, to the questions I posed.

Perhaps I didn't make the question obvious enough but the ticket has has no responce at all and is still open.

Sadly there appears to be no way of contacting CodeSector by any means apart from their TiCKETiNG system, otherwise I would have sent them an email directly asking the questions again.
_______________

I stand to be corrected but I believe that prior to CodeSectors new web-site coming online I believe that it was possible to contact the company directly via email.
Jan 25 at 8:24am
Eduardo Amado @ Walter Lindrum: This is the point where the spending of $10 you minimized in your last post, are transformed in $100 because of the lot of time you are wasting ticketing. Some of us warned about this software and company. I'm sorry.
