Clive Taylor Interesting deal spoilt by the fact that the simple GMail calendar synchro add-in is an extra, costing an unbelievable $25, making this an expensive piece of software.

Mary Wilson I took a look at this program and thought it had possibilities as it is being Essential PIM and a replacement for my Palm Desktop. When you do look into it there is alot this company is not telling you. What this add does not tell you is that you will have to pay $25.00 for each addition add in for synch with outlook, palm, and Gmal. The portable version is free. Agendus pro is another program just likes this and includes the software to synch with palm unlike this program that you have to pay $25.00 to be able to synch to palm gear. Althought it looks look good, it is not a good deal as it does not include the software to synch to the palm or anything else without alot of added cost. The company above statement is correct from above "But, you might be asking, what exactly does EssentialPIM do?" It is the wrong question. What it should ask is "What are they not telling you it includes?

Alexa Wolnberg Actually, it's clearly indicated on our official web site that one will need corresponding add-on for synchronization.
BTW, add-ons could be ordered at discounted price.

Mary Wilson You do not say above that you must purchase add on's. The testomines that you included lead me to believe that this was included in the program. I figured the extra costs when I visited the web sight. I still think it might be a decent program, but as you where not up front with this information, I wonder what else you are not telling me.

Roger Thomasson Mary, sorry for the confusion. I actually selected the testimonials to appear on the Bits du Jour page myself and I'm afraid that I completely glossed over the fact that the add-ins are extra. I should have been a bit more mindful of the content! Alexa and Astonsoft have been fantastic developers to work with -- unfortunately the blame lies with me on this one :-)

Sorry again for the confusion!

Laurie Nelson When I downloaded EssentialPIM Pro, Avast! anti-virus said there was a trojan. I tried it again--same result. Then I went to the Astonsoft web site and D/Led it.

I've been using the free version and thought I wanted to buy the Pro version. However, I was VERY disappointed to find out that it prints today's schedule so lightly I can hardly read it--even though all the items are marked as ALL DAY and, therefore, haven't expired yet. The only item not grayed out for today is a multi-day event. Why they would make a printout look like this is incredible.

Otherwise, I really like it. But I won't be spending my money on something so useless.

Charlotte Sinclaire I want to use your program primarily as an alternative mail client and also as a place to make lists. I have separate mail programs, to-do lists, PIMs, etc., right now and like the idea of having everything in the same place. However, I just did a test with your program to send/receive mail (I use GMail), and it only downloaded mail through 2009 -- so I have two years worth of mail that didn't download. I tried it twice -- once with POP settings, once with IMAP settings. The IIMAP seemed to pick up a few more, but it still stopped with 2009. What do you think may be the reason for this? I don't want to buy if the program has a top end for how much mail it can download or handle. Ideas? Thoughts?

Alexa Wolnberg Charlotte, please create a new database file (file-new-epim data file), then create a new email account (choose IMAP for testing purposes), fill in all the required fields in the new account creation wizard, and enable the "Check mail now" checkbox at the last step.

When you stop getting mail (you can check the progress by clicking on the "Send/Receive" button on the left), see if you now have all the messages beyond 2009. If not, click on the "Manage Folders" button on the left and make sure there's "Full messages" option enabled for the Synchronization type column besides Inbox folder, for example. After that, click Send/Receive again and once the process is finished, check your mail folders for latest messages again. Hope it helps. Thanks!

About embedded audio – you mean embedded MIDI files or attached audio files?
Astonsoft Ltd. - Dec 11 2011 at 2:25pm Copy Link

Charlotte Sinclaire Not an attached audio. It would be a "background" audio. Under Format, your client has Picture and Color. Some clients also have "Audio." I have one person who sends a lot of emails with .wav backgrounds. I just had him explain how he attaches. It is through the FormatBackground option. I do not see Audio on yours. And I don't hear any audio when I play those emails I've received with audio backgrounds. Is this something that might be added in an upgrade? If so, it is a small point and would not keep me from buying now. Thanks again.

Stefan Hauber So, if I install it on the allowed 2 computers: Is it possible to synchronize the data? What are the conditions to be able to do that? Do they have to be in the same LAN or is there just the need of an internet-access to both?

Concerning 'direct internet-synchronization' with Android: Has this android-application also two versions (free and pro)? Is the app included in the todays deal? Additionally to be allowed to install EPIM on two computers, on how many Android-computers is it allowed to be installed without further costs?

Michael R. Currently the ordering seems not to work: There is no product to choose from in the startup order-window.

On your homepage-order-address, you offer two pro-versions: The home/portable and the network-version. Is there a comparison chart between the two? Using the today's offer on two computers and an android and synching between these is covered by today's offer, right?

Thinking about, if it makes sense to buy/use another program for the combined usage of emails, notes, contacts, etc. instead of using the already used existing ones, which handle each task separetely, leads me to the question, if there is a deep integration between the data. E.g. is it possible to create links from one information to another, e.g. create a link from a note about a note about person A to the contact-data of Person B or to a certain EMail, which is referred to in the tex? Similar to the linking in HTML? (And if yes, how do you cope, when this EMail is about to be deleted by the user? Is he warned about existing links to this EMail?)

Alexa Wolnberg @Stefan Hauber
You can use our free supplementary software called EPIM Synchronizer to sync 2 or more database files. You need to have access to the files locally or over LAN.

EssentialPIM for Android is a free app and can be installed on as many devices as you wish.

We notified BitsDuJour stuff about problems with ordering, I'm sure they're working on it now.

Network version has all the features of EssentialPIM Pro plus couple of network related ones. You can find the list of the specific network features on this page: http://www.essentialpim.c...=nfeatures.
The network license costs more than the standard Pro one and is not covered by today's promotion.

And yes, it's possible to cross-link all the data in EssentialPIM Pro.

VLM Earlier, someone asked about feature comparison vs. Outlook 2010, and you responded that Outlook has many features. I agree, so here is my attempt to ask more specific questions in this regard:

1. Will EssentialPIM Pro import and handle tens of thousands of messages, some with attachments, from multiple PST files and maintain everything in good order?

2. Can you compare the rules facility of the 2 product. I rely VERY heavily on Outlook rules ... on the quite extensive set of options for making rules ... and I believe many others do, as well.

3. Outlook 2010 forces the display order of its "special folders", Inbox, Drafts, etc. These cannot be renamed or hidden, even in PST files where they are never used for much. Does EssentialPIM Pro allow a user to name and arrange folders any way the user wishes?

I hope this is specific enough! :)

Thanks for the specific questions. We love this kind of approach as it's much easier to answer knowing your needs.
1. Yes. Remember that you can always try any of the features with the trial version and see how it works out for you
2. Pretty much comparable, I'd say. At least I haven't heard any complains from people switching from Outlook to EPIM about lack of options in message rules so far
3. You cannot rename or move system folders like Inbox, Sent Items, etc., but you'll be able to do anything with all other folders created by you
4. There's no activation except for the license key

barney Barnes OK, I just bought the lifetime license. I previously had EPIM v 5.0 Portable installed for testing. There is no [obvious] way to enter my license information. Installed v4.x, which was what I was given to download after purchase. (It does not offer the ability to go portable.) I get a license entry screen. I also get the error, "The name/key you entered does not appear to be valid. Please try again."

This does not give me a warm, fuzzy feeling. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Michael R. Thanks for the former fast and positive answers. In the meantime I downloaded the trial-version and played around with it. It made a good impression.

Also checking the history-versions and -dates on your website made a very good impression: Updates are offered quite regularily.

I also found the help-file, which explained the cross- and global-linking in short:

I suppose there is no way to refer (via cross-linking) to a certain paragraph or (at least position) in a longer text. As it seems, I just can link to a certain text-document at all. Also it seems, that the text, the link is connected to, has to be in one single line. When trying to delete a notice, which is been linked from another place, there is no special 'linked-warning' beside the usual delete-confirmation. Maybe this is something yet to be improvable in a next update?

Also doing this, I missed a little something like navigation-arrows (go backward/forward). Taking the last example, when I tried to link a word, I first have to search the entry I want to link to and get it's hyperlink (of course), but than I can't go back quick by pressing a backward-button: I'll have to find my former position by hand, before I can copy the clipboard-entry to the link-field.

If I buy the regular version today (instead of the lifetime-license), can I anytime later (e.g. in 2 years) buy an upgrade to the lifetime upgrades for the regular price (~$39)?

Jim Thompson OK. I changed to another browser and I was able to get to the order page. I entered all the information and selected PayPal for payment. Instead of getting the order processed, I got a message that said the system could not verify my information and a code. I tried again using a different email address (that matches the one I use on PayPal and got the same message. I tried a third time using a credit card. I entered all information and I STILL got the verify message. I sent an email with the verify code and then received no reply. I wonder if this is just a way to steal credit card information. I do want the software, but I have now spent several hours just trying to get you to take my money. Please send me an email to let me know this is not a scam!

No need to import. In case of an IMAP mail account you will synchronize your messages with Gmail, in case of a POP3 mail account, you'll simply download them into EPIM (either leaving or not leaving messages on server, depending on set settings).

This is, of course, not a scam, rather than an automatic scam-checking mechanism to prevent fraudulent orders. Somehow it thinks your order cannot be verified.

But don't worry, in any case you'll be able to purchase the software with advertised discount even if the offer is already over. Let's wait till you get an answer for our order processing partner and in any case, please let us know about the outcome.

VLM Alexa - Thank you for your response yesterday. You wrote:

___

It would be nice if one could rename or at least reorder these. That's the same problem we have with Outlook ... huge clutter in the folder list. I'd create a folder called "! System Stuff" and put them all in there. The "!" would force that folder up in the sort order, but the group would only take up one line of vertical space, unless opened. Of course, others might have different ideas. :)

Just something to consider. Otherwise, what I do now is name all my folders with preface characters, either numbers like 01_FolderName, or special characters like _FolderName, to force them all up above the system folders. But this is a bit kludgy, of course.

I'm glad to hear that you'll be back at BDJ, perhaps sometime fairly soon. I presently intend to play with several programs in this category in the September time frame. Will work out well for me!

Thanks for being so present and so responsive during the promotion.

A. K. Could you tell what search capabilities EssentialPIM Pro does have?

- Is it possible to search tree only or content only?

- Is it possible to do a search like in Google, a and b, a or b, a not b?

- Is there a search result list, or do I need to click on "search again" to access the next hit?

- If any of these functions are missing, are there plans to implement them?

Thank you very much for answering.

I would like to add that I know most PIMs do not meet this list, so if there are missing functions in this field, this would not mean EssentialPIM Pro was in any way "inferior" or such.

- Both trees and contents of the trees are searchable and filterable
- That is possible using the Advanced Search feature
- Depends on the module and on the action you're performing (there's a list of results in the separate Search dialog window and there's a list of items listed directly in a particular module using the filtering feature)
- I hope nothing is missing but I encourage you to try EssentialPIM Pro (we offer a 30-days trial period, without any obligations to purchase later) and see for yourself :)

Alexa Wolnberg @Jan Desaer, let me just name a few:
- Integration with Cloud (means synchronization with most well known online services)
- Direct sync with Android and iOS (although, there's an option to synchronize iOS devices with Outlook, it doesn't really satisfy many iPhone users)
- Cross-linking in between items (easily link a Calendar item to, say, a Note)
- Portability (works from a USB flash drive, leaving no traces on host systems)
- Sticky notes on your Desktop
- Direct Dropbox integration (when EssentialPIM directly accesses your database file stored in Dropbox and determines when and how to update it, thus saving time and bandwidth)
- Supposedly better and faster customer support service :)
Hope that list gives you the idea. Thanks for the question.

Steve Amos Um...not to put too fine a point on it, but the whole point behind BDJ IS the discount. It is it's raison d'être. So...the details of the discount are IMPORTANT, and not for nothing.

That having been said, why does the 40% only apply to the Pro version and NOT the Lifetime version? The copy says 40% and on the Lifetime version we're only getting about 25%. That is NOT an insignificant discrepancy.

If we WERE getting 40% off, the price of the Lifetime version would be more like $47.97 instead of $59.96, or thereabouts. That difference would buy a whole 'nuther bit of software on BDJ, so it's meaningful.

So...what gives?
Jan 17 2013 at 8:04am Copy Link
0
Roger Thomasson @ Steve

Some vendors decide to offer different discounts for different versions. Given the option, of course we're going to list the most relevant discount to our customers. In this case we think it's the 40% / $23.97 deal. But we list the discounted price for the lifetime license in two other places on this promo page: in the popup following the "Buy Now" button, and in bold at the bottom of the promo copy.

We think it's pretty clear, but are happy to consider changes to our approach.

Steve Amos Am I doing something wrong with the search facility?

The search facility seems to work very fast and does run through all the different modules when doing a search, but then it only seems to take me to the general object wherein the search term exists and then I have to search for it again locally.

Let's say I have 3 or 4 pages worth of text in a note (or maybe several notes), and that somewhere arbitrarily in the middle of this note or notes I have the string "FD2F3F00-1ED9-494F-BB84-FB66C5804754".

Essential PIM does list all of the notes that this string appears in, but when I go to each of these notes in turn, I have to search them again individually to find the string in situ.

Why doesn't the application jump directly to where the string exists within the text in which it is residing (preferably with the search term pre-highlighted in the place or places in which it occurs)? Why do I have to search for the same string over and over again, once for advanced search and once for each individual note in which the string occurs?

Hopefully I'm doing this wrong?

Peter C1 Hi Alexa Wolnberg, I'm looking to buy the 25% discounted Lifetime License version of Essential PIM Pro.

I have a few questions for you (as i dont have enough time to try out the program before the deal expires):

Q1. I noticed the question from "Jeffrey Krzysztow Does EPIM support Google's two step authentication?", so does this mean that currently it is not possible to use EssentialPIM Pro with googles GMAiL service (or perhaps there is a get around) ?

Q1b or can you explain what problem is caused by not being able to use the google 2 step authentication?

Q2. Can EssentialPIM be made to be portable (for example: on a USB key or SDHC memory card etc) ?

Q3. Given the size of emails nowadays is there any maximum size limit to the amount of emails that can be stored on EssentialPIM (or can it handle any size but just slows down because of the large archive size etc)?

I've noticed that You offer a 30 return period policy, so perhaps it might be easier if I buy & evaluate and then decide whether to keep or not based on my findings IS THiS ACCEPTABLE TO YOU?

Alexa Wolnberg Hello Peter,
q1. You can use EssentialPIM with Gmail without any issues right from the start. The only additional thing you'd need to do in case you use a 2-way authentication and wish to synchronize with Google Calendar, Tasks, Drive and Contacts (but not Gmail as it uses different approach) is to visit the link I posted couple of posts above (you need to do that only once) and follow instructions.
q2. Yes, there's a special Portable version.
q3. There's no theoretical limit. We have users with 3-4 GB of email messages and that didn't cause any noticeable drawbacks, like they say.
q4. License key you purchase will work as with the Desktop as with the Portable versions. It's your choice which version to use.
About the 30-days money back period - we always fulfill without any problems. So; feel fre to utilize it (although, it seems to be a little bit too late at a time of reply).

Rich OBrien I downloaded and installed EssentialPM Pro to take a look at it. What a marvelous, impressive program. I wish I had discovered EssentialPM Pro years ago. Thanks once again to Bits Du Jour for bringing great software to my attention.
I pasted in some tables which included both formatted text and pictures. Everything pasted in perfectly. No other program has so perfectly passed this test.
The current version is 5.53. One of the download links points to older version 3.21. The older version seems perfect. The newer version is more perfect.
I love that when working with Notes, when you hover over the note list with the mouse pointer, a box shows not only the name you give each note but also the box automatically grabs and displays the first paragraph from the top of each note, making it easier to find exactly the note you may be looking for. Dierk EPIM looks like a fine Desktop Outlook Substitute, but is not compelling as a full-blown cross-platform PIM:

The (desktop) Notes function is somewhat weak - although (to be fair) that is in comparison to a Dedicated Desktop Notes app (such as the excellent RightNote);

Alas, the Android Notes module for EPIM is Very Basic: not only does it lack any formatting options in its own right, but it also REMOVES any existing (desktop) formatting when Notes are synced;

The lack of a self-contained Contacts module for Android also hurts. This may well be a limitation of ANDROID, but it still limits functionality - at least as compared with older Windows Mobile PDAs/"Smartphones"

[Android also gets dinged hard for the lack of a) a SPELL CHECK function, and b) Device-wide Search. EPIM is certainly not alone in having extremely basic functionality / lacking Integration on Android devices: from a Business / Professional User point-of-view, Android apps are still light-years behind their (now "Obsolete") Windows Mobile predecessors.]

Again, in a Strictly Desktop Environment - and if no high demands are made upon the "Notes" module - EPIM looks like a solid choice.

Unfortunately, there are still no great PIMS for Android.

Alexa Wolnberg That depends on where you store all the phone calls and notes for a contact. If they're stored in the Notes field for a contact, then yes, if they are linked to a contact from within the contact, then yes. There's lost of possibilities and choices.

2. Can each license share with another device (a cell pgone) or would the PC and the cell phone count as two licenses.

Thanks.

Nick Kobe I own EssentialPIM Pro and have had it for many years. When I purchased it the license applied to all the "users" computers. It is unfortunate that they have gone to the convoluted "users" license on two computers. This is NOT a users license. Even though I own the software and like it I no longer use it due to the change in the license (I know the limitation does not apply to my license). However, I do not support software companies that have limited or computer based licenses. It is not practical when so many of us own multiple computers. I now use on ALL of my computers Vueminder Ultimate. It is an excellent PIM and support is equally excellent. Note: I do not work for Vueminder.
here's couple of different views for contacts in Outlook. Which one of them do you mean?
1 The Business card view and the main entry screen you get when e.g., double-clicking the card; I like the way everything show together, incl. the persons photo.

2 The "old outlook" week view I craved has days of the week in two columns, i.e.,
first three in first, next two and (smaller)sat-sun in second one. Gives more room to see more text. What your competition VueMinder calls 'grid view'

Last I ran the trial of EPIM, I could not see either of the above features. And the lack of dialer may, unfortunately, keep me shackled to Outlook, much as I would love to have something else...

Can you confirm ?

Alexa Wolnberg Sorry not sure I understand what you mean. It basically works this way: one database file can contain one calendar. Each calendar can contain multiple categories. Each calendar event can be assigned different categories.
CalDAV sync works as for us as for all other users. Do you get an error message when trying to sync? Thanks.

Denius SixSixSix For example : My outlook (synced with an exchange serv ) contains more than one calendar, (five, four of them being read only). I did manage to sync only one of them (the main).

But I did get your answer, this is not possible directly .

Caldav sync tells me that there is a character error. I tried with another software, caldav sync was working.

I was hoping to sync multiple calendars to Epim pro, using different sync methods, since caldav allows to choose the calendar to sync.

Michael R. Is it possible to upgrade a former-bought 1year license to a lifetime license for the price difference today, i.e. for about $24?

When modifiying an email and pressing accidently [x], which unfortunately happened quite often in the last time, PIM closes it without asking. (It asks when creating a new email, but not when modifying an already existing one). I suppose, this is a bug and will be fixed in a next update, but unfortunately my 1 year of free updates is over now...

So the above upgrade-price would make sense to me. Just another year for getting this bug fixed would probably not...

Alexa Wolnberg John, passwords are stored in the database file that you can encrypt using one of the leading encryption algorithms - AES.

With regards to contacts selection - you can use regular Windows shortcuts: Ctrl+A, Ctrl+Click, Shift+Click. You should probably send messages out in batches in order not to look like a spammer for you ISP.

With regards to synchronization - you can do that. Although a Network (Business) edition would suit you better as it allows to work with a single database file from several PCs simultaneously. EPIM can also synchronize with Outlook.
Astonsoft Ltd. - Jan 16 2014 at 11:26am Copy Link

Mariusz Lewandowski "Mariusz, could you please elaborate a bit more about your specific needs?" [...]

Alexa, the issues were discussed on EPIM forums many times. I was able to work with EPIM for nearly 1000 days so it's not that bad. Anyway, I'll be concise:

You can use only ONE calendar (no option to define separate calendars for business/private/wife/children plans). There are categories available but you cannot assign several categories to one item.

Good global search functionality -- you can define several conditions but the only available operands are "Match ALL of the following" and "Match ANY of the following". Cannot define strings like e.g. "aa" AND ("bb" OR "cc") -- "Name=John" AND ("Category=Private" OR "Category=Family").

Event's Start date is not displayed in the search results. This is essential to analyze past events. I can use filters in the Table view but it not the same.

No option to save complex search conditions.

No preview of search results. "Details" and "Go To item" buttons need too much clicking to preview contents.

No highlight of the search phrase - if you have many long notes to look in then the global search finds ONLY the notes (titles) containing the search phrase. You have to open the found notes one by one and search the phrase again to finally find what you need.

Global search is possible only in the active (open) database. While EPIM allows to use many dbs it would be nice if global is really "global" and looks in other databases, too.

Insert Hyperling dialog does not use tree structure. It is a nightmare to search target items in a flat list (in my db it was well over 4000 entries). There's a filter box to narrow the list BUT - if target is Note - the filter looks in the titles only instead of the contents.

Event's or Task's note shows ONLY FIVE LINES of text (scrollable but good luck with longer text). Cannot resize these dialogs.

Contact tab (All, Personal Info, Business, Notes, Picture, Attachments) titles with empty fields look the same way as when the tab fields contain data. A bold font or any icon in tab's title would do the job to inform about data available on a tab.

No tagging system despite promised long, long, looong ago.

One skin available. I prefer dark themes.

No "populate" option in the Passwords module that would automatically fill in the logon fields and erase data from clipboard afterwards. Hence passwords from the "Passwords" module remain in clipboard forever.

Define any task with no dates. Drag it from ToDo list to calendar grid (if View ToDo bar is checked) when done. Thus you create a task with "Show in Calendar" option checked. BUT such task does not have the "Due date" defined (only "Start date" is updated) and fools the date range limit in Table view (see here: http://www.essentialpim.c...=2&t=14683).

Etc, etc.

Good thing is that some of them have already been taken care of (although not in the currently publicly available 5.57 version). Like the "populate" option in the Passwords module, changed UI for Contacts (and thus their tabs), tags and multiple categories.
As for the others - their time will surely come. Hope to see you back by then, your license allows that :)

John Terdik Ref: "With regards to synchronization - you can do that. Although a Network (Business) edition would suit you better as it allows to work with a single database file from several PCs simultaneously. EPIM can also synchronize with Outlook"

With the is the sync in real time for all systems?
What if a system does not have access to the database, e.g. I take my laptop on the road with me. I assume that EPIM on the laptop would work with the data on the laptop and then sync when reconnected to my network.

MS outlook has support for categories but does not sync the categories but my 3rd party applications do sync the categories and the colors associated with the categories, does EPIM sync the categories and the color of the categories with Outlook?

If I'm syncing with Google and the like would this replace the requirement for the network edition? Currently I'm not using the likes of Google to sync mainly because Google really messed me up when I tried it.

Yep, EPIM fully supports synchronization of its own and Outlook categories and their colors.

Stephen Kreyling Eventually, if this is how the site operates with the "Free" being used for extended trials, people will go elsewhere for a better deal. Its nice it works for a year, but "Free" to me does not mean an extended trial. Maybe bits needs to correct their system and allow vendors to properly post the details using extended trial with expiration in x months. I think that would be more honest and I would assume more people will pass on offers from them.

You got a good product, but "Free" should not have an expiration, that is a true trial. Even paid software when the updates run out, it still works, you just dont get any new updates. Maybe the software should be Free for this version and future versions after the 1 year period has a cost. If people like the program and use it, they will pay for the latest.

If you wish to use Windows EssentialPIM Pro (and you need a license for that), you can synchronize it with Android EssentialPIM Free or Android EssentialPIM Pro. Bertie Brummel Is it allowed to run EPIM on multiple private PCs operated via KVM-Switch ( so one can only work with 1 software instance at the same time) with a single Pro License?

Alexa Wolnberg Each license allows installation on a single computer and a laptop. So; in your case each of the PCs would need to have its own license.

Bertie Brummel @ Alexa: Your answer is not unexpected, a policy like that should be re-considered though . Nowadays people often use several computers for different private purposes. That's why more and more software developers offer "Family Packs".
Except maybe for syncing tasks running several instances of a PIM simultaneous using a Keyboard-Video-Mouse-Switch makes not so much sense IMHO ;-O

M M Alexa, as you advised in your first reply (the second post in this thread) I contacted your customer support (using my other email). They answered just my first question about my current license, did not propose anything to upgrading to lifetime upgrades :(
Also, they did not reply if I need to pay for Pro on Android separately, a hint on your "Buy" page says that single Desktop license allows me to use EPIM on 2 owned puters and "unlimited number of smartphones and tablets" (!). Can you please confirm it applies to Pro on Android?

Petr I just purchased EssentialPIM Pro on today's deal. The order confirmation page has a download link so I downloaded and installed verion 5.

Now, checking my email, there is a link for version 6, but the download file is labelled "version 4". This is very confusing. I hope my experience with this software becomes better than what I described above.

Please reply to clarify which version I should install?
I also have both Apple iOS and Android devices:
a. iPhone 4s with iOS version 7
b. iPad with iOS version 6
c. Samsung Galaxy Note 4 with Android 4.4.4

I want all my portable devices to be able to sync. I assume this is possible. Please advise what software I should install on each of the above devices?

I will be using my gmail account for Calendar, Documents, email, tasks and notes. Will all these work on all the devices? Thanks.

Amit Hello,
I wanted to know if there are some features available in this program -
1) Web capture - just select any text in any browser and press any hotkey (or any other way assigned in essentialpim pro) and the seleced text in the active browser will be added to essentialpim pro
2) And also will then the additional information like title and url of the webpage will also get noted and added to the essentialpim pro field of that very added webcapture, so that i can get to the url of the added text later.
If these features are not available in the present version of essentialpim pro then can they be added soon. Will be a must buy then. Thanks a lot.

Stefan Mueller Talking customizable and making life easier - I am having a very hard time deciphering the tiny fonts of column headers and many other interface elements.

Are there any settings or tweaks to make this software compatible with high DPI notebooks? Very few screen elements seem to scale along with Windows settings, for the most part headers and dialogs remain almost illegible.

Zooming does not work, not with Ctrl mousewheel and not with Ctrl Numpad +- or any other of the usual shortcuts? Any way to zoom the interface like in modern browsers and office suites?

Yes, 6.06 from the download trial link. It looks terrible over here. Some elements , such as menu entries follow Windows settings, nice and large. Other stuff not even half that size.

Especially bad some column headers and also headings like "Today" and all tree entries of Notes and Contacts. The font for the notes and contacts can be customized, but their tree does not follow that setting. Many things like that

I am reluctant to change Windows settings, as this will affect other programs as well. The problem seems to be within EPIM. To reproduce, crank up the font for notes, then look at the tree of notes - it won't scale along. Same thing everywhere, contacts, mail, todo, passwords ....

Laga Mahesa > ""You can color-code categories in EssentialPIM and use them the same way you're using calendars in Google Calendar. You can even synchronize them with each other."

These calendars are not just for personal use, as I share them with colleagues and students. For example, I give r/w access to middle/high school department heads for faculty and events, while class captains get r/w access to class events.

As I understand it, EPIM has one calendar entity. If I make a new event in EPIM, how does it decide which calendar to sync that new entry to?

Dierk Based on a couple of hours spent with the "Trial," the Windows version of EPIM appears to be a viable Outlook replacement.
Did not try the Mail module, as never used Outlook for Email, and have stuck with Thunderbird for past several years (as most alternatives have vanished...).

As expected, the Notes module in EPIM is not overly robust: probably only a few steps behind the old "PhatNotes" (desktop) program, but well behind the best of the current Windows Information Databases (personal favorite is RightNote Pro -- which has a powerful set of features.)

But, it is probably not fair to expect a "Full" PIM to compete against Dedicated Information managers that specialize in organizing a variety of data types.

AND, EPIM has the distinct advantage of offering a Native Android version, with Local (NOT Cloud Based...) WiFi Sync between Desktop & Mobile - something that is difficult to find.

Alas, the Android version of EPIM is still a work-in-progress, but it IS functional enough to be useful.
The Android Notes module is only minimally functional - but this is a sore spot on Android in any event, with NOTHING available that compares to the PhatNotes Windows Mobile app. And the EPIM Android interface still lags behind other apps, such as Pocket Informant.

Still, the overall function of EPIM Windows, the ability to Sync to a Native Android app - and the promise that the Android version will see improvements - makes EPIM a good bet as a "Keeper": Accordingly, will take advantage of the current promotion.
Thanks for making this available!

Tortuga @Alexa Hello :)
I own an (old) Palm TX, that finally died (sniff !!!) Yes, yes, I know ... it was old but a *great* little critter :D
Been looking for a replacement that can properly import all the DB, and eventually be synced on Android. I got Free ePIM portable 6.54 to test the different options

1) I had no problem importing the Contacts DB that is in .vcf format and the Palm Memo in .txt format.
2) But, what to do w the rest? Some time ago, I was able to convert Tasks & ToDo from .dba & .tda to .csv format
I have been unable to import any of it into ePIM? The only option to import any .csv is the Password section ... :(
Please, can you help?
Peace

Alexa Wolnberg Hello Tortuga :)
Unfortunately import of tasks and events that are in CSV format is not supported. Maybe you can find a csv to iCal converter.. In this case you'll be able to import anything. Also, if you are still able to connect your Palm to a PC, there's direct synchronization with EssentialPIM that will allow you to get all the data into the program in no time. See here how it works: http://www.essentialpim.c...p/palm.htm.

Hello, a similar question to Tortuga's: I was using Palm long time ago, still have the Palm Desktop (v4.1.4) installed on a laptop, with data in its databases (.dat format). Is there any way to import from these, not using the Palm device (even if I manage to start it again I would have hardware issues connecting it to a laptop, it was using either serial or IrDA connections, not used anymore)
Thank you!

What an idea !!!! I didn't even think of exporting from the laptop's DB! DUH!!

I kept a couple of old PCs/Laptops 'just-in-case', and one of them must still hv the whole thing installed.
I'll try to get some time this WE to try that out.
At this point, I'm willing to try *anything* !!! sigh
In the meantime, I found a site that allowed me to convert the .csv to .ics, then I imported it to ePIM
Maybe it can help you for some of the DBs?
http://manas.tungare.name...v-to-ical/

So now I hv imported Contacts, Notes, Calendar.
Still haven't found a way to import Task, Events, ...
If you find ANY tips at all, I'm all ears :)

Dennis Wallentin I find Windows EPIM and Android EPIM to be very good. Less resource consuming compared with some other similar tools.

My suggestion is to download the free version and explore it. If You like what You see and experience then use this offer.

While I have the attention of EPIM representant here I would like to address an annoying thing:

Using DropBox as storage for the underlying database is a good way. However, is it possible for You to speed up the transfer? Overall I find the database operations to be the bottle neck.

Could You have the kindness to put it on top of the To-do-Agenda for next major release.

TIA

Alexa Wolnberg Thanks for your comment and for the suggestion. Will see if we are able to speed up the feature a bit. The main problem here is that we always need to download/upload the whole database file, regardless of the changes made. In this case EPIM Cloud could be a better solution as we only move altered data to the service and back, which takes much less time.

Eugene Saltz I have been using EssentialPIM since 2008, and never regretted having done so. It provides a calendar for scheduling both my personal and professional life which is very flexible. The same can be said for its note taking capabilities as well. There are other modules that I currently don't take advantage of, but I know others who do and are happy with them.

The best part of EssentialPIM for me is that the desktop version synchs with my Android cell phone (Apple cell phone app is also available). That means that when I am traveling, I have all the information on my PC version with me - mighty handy!

There is a free version - give it a try and see if it is for you.

Edward Smith I would like to try buy this product, but without synchronizing to my iPhone, this product would be worthless to me. My concern is that the reviews for the iPhone version are not good, and many of the reviews specifically state that the app does not sync. The iPhone app has not been updated for over two years. Apple now issues warnings that older apps may slow down the iPhone, and that the developer needs to update their app. It would appear that the android version is being actively developed, but the iPhone version is not. The latest release of an android version is a month ago, while the last release of the iPhone version is over two years ago. Couple that with the negative responses for the iPhone version, and I just don't see how I can make this purchase.

Alexa Wolnberg Synchronization with an iPhone should work in any case, if it doesn't, we will fix it. But you're right about the fact that we do not actively develop the iPhone/iPad version of EssentialPIM at the moment due to the lack of interest in such a solution from the end users. Should the situation change in the future, we would gladly reconsider.

Dierk This is a deal worth picking up: there are two desktop applications I have set to auto-start to open windows: EssentialPIM (Pro, Lifetime), and RightNotes (Pro).

RightNotes is the best desktop "complex data" Information Database I have found, while EssentialPIM is - well, "Essential" - as a Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks platform - with simple note taking abilities, plus email handling if one desires.

(There is also a Passwords module, which we have frankly not even looked at, being fully committed to eWallet for a wide variety of sensitive data storage & multi-platform sync.)

The ability to sync to the Android version is (again...) "Essential," and while the Notes component is weak (especially on android), it is quite suitable for brief notes that one wants to have easily synced between mobile & desktop. Plus Astonsoft has released several android updates since purchase which provides hope for even more improvements down the road.

If on the fence, will suggest a visit to the EPIM web site for greater detail on the program's capabilities - and will echo Eugene Saltz's recommendation to look at the User Forum, which has actually proven useful.

M User I have been using EssentialPIM since so many years (lifetime license) and like it a lot. But, after some optimalisations for hDPI-monitors, there are still some bad scalings on 4K and 5K-screens. For example in the Contact-module. Or in the Today-screen (the down-right corner with the bithdays (the icon is not complete and with days with more than one birtday ... the view is 'compressed' and not fully readable.

One last problem: each time I start EPIM I get a 'The database is checked'-window (very annoying). As part of that (?) I can't make automatic updates (dangerous). Is there a tool available for fixing the DB? Thanks in advance!

Otherwise, as I said: very happy and a good recommendation! I recommand the Lifetime License!!

Dierk EPIM is an excellent program, especially when used with its Android version, which has seen regular updates & has become much more robust.
As with any feature-rich application, it does pay to spend a bit of time learning the details (try running through "Working with EssentialPIM (Pro...)" in the Help file), but the basics can be grasped fairly easily.

Even ignoring the Password module (long time eWallet user...), and sticking with T-bird as a desktop email client (web mail only from mobile devices), still felt that EPIM Pro was easily worth its asking price - on both platforms (and the "Lifetime License" is a great bargain!).

Tortuga @Alexa Wolnberg Hello :)
I bought ePIM & the Android app too.
Now I have a new phone, how do I transfer the app to the new phone?
The old phone is unusable, meaning every blue moon it comes on, just long enough so I manage to transfer a few bits of data out of it ... :(
Not sure how to transfer your app. I am not very tech savvy ;)

Many thanks for any help

Peace

Alexa Wolnberg Hello :)
Simply install the app on the new phone using the same Google account you upgraded to the Pro version of EPIM with. You registration will be picked up automatically. For more info please see here: https://support.google.co...ic=1046717.

Ed Ward I use G-mail and find it satisfactory, although not ideal. Unclear to me what advantages EPIM offers over G-mail, and vice versa. Does anyone know of a review comparing and contrast EPIM w/ G-mail? Before switching to EPIM I would also need to know what I was giving up. Thanks!
