Avi S I purchased this program the last time it was offered on BDJ. It was well worth the money. Don't mistake this for a simple ProcessExplorer clone.
For instance, the other day I needed to experiment with varying processor affinities for the threads in an application that I was debugging. Now, ProcessExplorer does have a "set affinity" option - but it affects the *whole* process. In contrast, with XTM, I was able to set a separate affinity for each of the threads within the process. That's a very significant feature.
XTM really shines in the usability of the interface, specifically regarding its incremental-search filters and its splitscreen presentation.
As an example: I'm currently running about 50 processes, including 10 items in console windows. Let's say I'd like to focus in on those 10 console windows to check what is running in each of those windows, and to isolate one or two that I'd like to shut down. Simply typing "cmd" in the filter box limits the chart to those 10 windows, and then setting the bottom half of the screen to the "environment" tab allows me to scroll through the items, quickly inspecting each one to see the command line that it is running. Quick and slick.
However, there are some basic features that are missing, which one would expect from a full-featured program of this sort:
1] Although one can add dozens of informative columns in the chart, there is no "freeze panes" option, so once you scroll past the first few columns, it is no longer clear which processes the numbers belong to. One would expect the initial column to "freeze", so that the process name will always be visible, even as the columns scroll.
2] In many cases, in considering the load on a machine, it is important to know the total number of resources allocated - handles, GDI object, virtual memory, etc. However, although XTM displays all this info on a per-process basis, there is no way to display the total number of any given item. The tool would be much more useful if it would have a row at the bottom with totals for each column. (I have achieved this result on occasion by choosing the "export" feature, which saves the entire set of information to a table in a text file - I then import that table into Excel, where I calculate per-column totals. Nevertheless, this is not a very convenient method of extracting the information!)
3] On multiple-CPU computers, there is not much information provided regarding the usage of the multiple CPUs. The CPU usage column simply displays the usage relative to the total number of CPUs (e.g. if a process is using 100% of 1 processor on a quad-core, it will say 25%). I would have liked to see a column indicating the number of CPUs currently utilized by a given process, as well as a breakdown indicating how much of each CPU was utilized.
All in all, a critical and useful utility, and well worth the money. But I do wish that Warecase would be more actively improving the produce with features such as those noted here.

Steven Avery Hi,

Great post above. #1 and #2 are simply user design, and hopefully will be implemented. #3 sounds good, too.

Avi, your explanation of finding the window at issue is great. My problem is that the window is almost always Firefox, and I need to look for interna- to-Firefox techniques. On occasion I've used a Nirsoft utility to find out what program is giving a window-message, a similar concept.

Do you have other examples of special use to share ?

Stephane M Hi,

How does the license model work with Virtual Machines?
I am running a 64-bit system as a host and using several virtual machines as guests running 32-bit and 64-bit systems.

All those systems are on the same physical machine.

So, do I need a license for each system ?

If one license is enough in this case, is it possible to use the same license for both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms or have a license bound to both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms?

The same questions go for multi-boot systems.

Thank you!

Michael Ritter Stephane,
Warecase XTM is licensed on a per-computer basis(physical machine). One license is enough in this case.

Peter C1 "Avi S" many thanks for your information I found it informative.

Question: Can the 32bit program be used on the 64bit OpSys?

Reason for asking is that more PC's/notebooks are being with 64bit Windows but I'm happy to use the 32bit system and I really think that making One(1) program that installed and worked with either 32 or 64bit is a better way to go ... (to me, it sort of feels like gouging for extra money)

Sadly there are a number of different Task & Or Process Managers (Process Hacker but one example) and what a pity that all of the good bits from each couldn't be added together so that 1 all conquering all powerful TM could be.

Perhaps if Task Managers had originally been based on plug-ins that the user just added too with extra plug-ins which added extra features or functions. I wish somebody would go down this path, but I cant see anyone making such a program.

Avi S @Peter - I don't believe so, but I haven't tried.
In terms of the extra features that you mention, I think this underscores the importance of finding a product whose developers are dedicated to continuing to add features according to user needs and requests.
Is XTM such a product? This is not at all clear. It's been well over a year since they've added any features at all (all of the releases over the past year were minor maintenance releases, as can be seen on their website). I've sent them suggestions (specifically, items [1] and [2] from my earlier post), but I haven't received any indication of whether they are even considering these improvements.
If any XTM reps are following this thread, I think it would be important to hear from you as to whether there has been any significant development on the product over the last year, when the next major release is planned for, and which features are slated to be included.

Stephane M @Michael Ritter
Thanks!
So in my case, can I buy a copy (either 32-bit or 64-bit) and use the same license with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions?
Dec 28 2011 at 11:55am
Michael Ritter @Stephane,

The 32-bit and 64-bit versions are separate products. This means that you must purchase a license for each separate windows platform.
Warecase Vendor - Dec 28 2011 at 12:44pm
Rich Ackerson I have the same question as Stephane. My host system is 64bit Win7 and I have several 32- and 64- bit VMs running within it. Assuming I wanted to use XTM on both my host system and a 32 bit VM, which version would I need?
Dec 28 2011 at 12:45pm
Stephane M @Michael Ritter
So can I use the 32-bit version on 64-bit systems?
Dec 28 2011 at 12:53pm
Michael Ritter @Stephane,
32-bit version doesn't work on 64-bit systems.
You need 64-bit version for Windows x64.
Warecase Vendor - Dec 28 2011 at 12:56pm
Stephane M Thanks Michael Ritter.
Is it possible to have a license valid for both platforms as I need only one license?
Dec 28 2011 at 1:12pm
Michael Ritter @Stephane,
XTM - both 32-bit and 64-bit Editions does not offered via this promotional offer. You must purchase a license for each separate windows platform 32 & 64 bits.
Warecase Vendor - Dec 28 2011 at 1:25pm
James Kenney I really dislike the policies of this software, but the 64bit version has been so useful that it is tempting to buy the 32bit version too.
