What are people saying about FILEminimizer Pictures 3.0 - Commercial License

Daniel Walker Good day -

-- I LIKE IT! Now I have a couple questions.

-- 1. Will this 'change' the photo in any way that it will affect getting it printed at a shop (like Walgreens, CostCo, other commercial places - amateur or professional)?

-- 2. Will this affect a 'created' image (in CorelDRAW, export as a PNG) that I would supply to a Print-on-Demand company for printing on a T-Shirt? ceramic mug? Poster print? etc. (mine prefer PNGs - with 'transparency' for printing on dark T-shirts). Most cloth and ceramic are done by dye sublimation of an image I supply to them.

-- Saving file size would be GREAT!

Lewis Everall Daniel,

To answer your questions:

1. You have 4 different compression levels to choose. Among them also one for "print". Compression might be a bit lower, but the print quality is then guaranteed.

2. It won't affect the created image. The program can detect e.g. if transparency is in the image and in such a case chooses the most appropriate format (PNG).

Daniel H Is the Premium Pack included with the price? Otherwise you have to pay another _4.99 to get 1 year free updates/upgrades which under normal conditions is included with the price of software. What about VAT, is it included with the price (some companies do to balance price for EU and non-EU (USA) customers) or it is another add-on to the final price? Afterall, for me the final price would be 21 Euros(31 USD) and it does not seem to be a great bargain, except non-EU customers (and maybe Minnesota as well:) ).
Oct 15 2009 at 8:49pm Copy Link
0
Lewis Everall Daniel,

The premium pack is in addition but it is also optional.

VAT is charged only if you are EU customer and do not have European VAT-ID. If you have this, you are exempt from paying VAT and can pay the net price.

Hope this helps.

Daniel H Hi CHristoph, what is my objection is that you have to buy "Premium Pack: incl. free Updates, Upgrades and Support for 1 year" for another _4.99 to get even updates after purchase. Normally, when buying software one year of free updates is included. Actually, what is your software advantage over free alternatives as IrfanView?

Andrew Griffiths Like Daniel, I would like to know advantage over IrfanView and similar.
Oct 18 2009 at 3:15am Copy Link

Lewis Everall @ Daniel: The premium pack entitles you for FREE upgrades during this period. If you don't purchase the premium pack and an upgrade comes out, you still get a preferential upgrade price.

@ Daniel and Andrew: Firstly, Irfanview is only free for personal use. You get here a commercial license of our software. Secondly, Irfanview is an image toolbox, while we strictly focus on image optimization and this in batch. Press the button and it is optimized. It is straight forward and idiot-proof. you will be a lot faster and results will be better.

I suggest to try it out with the evaluation version to see the difference.

Bob S Hi - this looks like it could be very useful for many purposes and I just want to confirm the benefit for the purpose I have in mind.

From the info provided, it looks as though this creates versions of images that are much smaller without much if any loss in quality - therefore, on a website with lots of images, this should allow the website to load much more quickly, correct?

One more naive question - is there any downside to applying this to images that would appear on one's website?

Michael M Are there any command-line-arguments, e.g. make the conversion done completely from inside a dos-box?

Or even better, can the .dll inside the directory used from inside own programs? (When clicking on 'contents' I am guided to a online-page where something about a SDK is said. Is this .DLL meant with this and is there a documentation?)

Thank you,

Michael

Lewis Everall @ Bob: that is exactly what you can do with FILEminimizer Pictures. Our customers could accellerate their own webpages by over 30 percent thanks to smaller pictures.
And no, there is no downside.

@Michael M: You can't do it from DOS, but we offer a SDK. It is a programmable .dll which allows you to integrate our image compression engine in other environments, e.g. Sharepoint. Please contact me at cs@balesio.com for documentation and further info.

thanks
Chris

Doyle F How does the software work? Does it identify the components and then go to the Manufacturer's website to get the latest drivers or does it go to your website for them?

Is this a subscription based product?

Can I add components manually or does it only work on those that are plugged into the computer? IE.....my DVD player doesn't plug into the computer but I still need to check for driver updates periodically.

Bob S This seems to deliver exactly what the developer promises... I just tried it on a 6Mb photo (largest on my PC) and it shrunk it to .7Mb (88% reduction in size). This will allow me to speed up pages on our website that have large images...

I am unable to get one feature to work, though. Shows option to "View File(s)" - I'm assuming that is to view the new, reduced image. However, it doesn't do anything when I click on it. Am I doing something wrong?

Brandon H @Danny - From what I understand this is still lossy compression, just "intelligent," so it's different from Zip, RAR, etc which create identical what you put in is what you get out.

This will be great for creating smaller more-compressed versions for sharing and posting online, but I would still keep the original for any serious manipulation and for backups.

HKP I recommend strongly to check out if your recipients of your shrunk photos can open the files minimized with FILEminimizer Pictures. I made the experience that especially the employees of companies cannot open these shrunk photos. They don’t get through the security-barriers. Therewith this software missed its main target to provide an easy way to send minimized pictures as email-attachment. For the same reason, everybody should think twice if he’s thinking about replacing the original pictures by photos shrunk with this application.

Shrinking photos with freeware like Picasa from Google require some more clicks, but until now, this way minimized pictures could be opened still by everybody without any issue. The new WinZip Pro 17.5 provides also an excellent tool for shrinking photos and sending them as an email-attachment.

Col- Hectorz I would like to know what is the comparison of this commercial version and the free one offer on their web site.
I looked all around and they don't give any information about a commercial version of "FILEminimizer Picture". I saw the "suite" one withch is not the same as the "picture" for picture only.
So where is it come from that commercial license ?

Michael Johnsson I have typed in registration 2 times now, it is still the same free one that was downloaded, and it still has the same free version serial starting on 999991, my serial starts with 454934, so that 999991 is totaly wrong.

So is this a giveaway if the free version only or not?

Michael Johnsson @Col- Hectorz

I just got a message from the software, a reminder to register the free version if I am a commercial user.

So basic this gaveaway is a licence to use the free version for a commercial user.
And since the licence do not work, its basic a giveaway of the regular free version.

Nice scam.

Altho the software is nice, I have been playing with it a bit.

L Wag There doesn't seem to be any difference between this "commercial" version and the free version of this software offered on their site. They have simply lifted the restriction on using the free version for commercial use. I won't be using this for commercial purposes, but I have downloaded it anyway and will give it a try.

Chintan Karnik Interesting product. Tried this on a scanned image that was 1.6mb jpeg resulted in a new jpeg file thats only 108k. Impressive! The magic I guess was that it intelligently reduced the image dimensions from 5100 x 7014 to 1024 x 1408 so as to keep the image looking the same.

Instead of the batch mode in the GUI, is there a command-line interface to this?

What is the pricing like on the server or sdk version of this software. Is it available at a promo price today? Ofcourse I could send a personal email for a quote, but I think other bitsters would stand to benefit from this info.

Greg Brown Hi folks - just a user here, not a rep of this company.

I purchased this software through bitsdujour a couple of years ago, and for my purposes it works like a champ - my purposes being to back up my personal photos to the cloud for safe keeping. Just now I used it to convert a photo from 5.31 mb to 624 kb - an 88% file size reduction. Using a photo viewer like Irfanview to A/B them, my eye can't discern any difference as long as I don't zoom in too much. You're not going to want to use this to shrink your photos and then delete your originals. But for making smaller (but still very good looking) copies for online backup, it's great. Note also that there are settings that will allow you to make adjustments to the final output. For example, you can prevent it from changing the photo resolution. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Red Wine There is a problem with software registration.

After submitting the registration details, it works, but after you open it again, the license converts back to free, non-commercial.

Since the above it says commercial, it shouldn't convert back to free version.

Jan-Christoph Ihrens Could the vendor or some BDJ official please comment on the license issue? It's called "Commercial License", but the "Fine Print" says "License can be used for Personal use only." If I can't use it for commercial purposes, it's probably not interesting for me.

Cary Adams First... you cannot reduce the file size of photo image files by up to 98%, with "absolutely no loss in quality". That is a lie.

Since this is a "free" tool, you can try it and see. But please don't think this is a helpful archiver such that you can discard your original photo files in favor of reduced file sizes.
Jun 8 2013 at 10:53am Copy Link
0
Jan-Christoph Ihrens @Cary Adams: That's right, but in the sentence you quoted, they didn't talk about photos, just "JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PNG, BMP and EMF images". If there's a small black line on a white background, you can probably reduce the file size that much without visible loss in quality... ;-)

Apart from that it can still be very helpful - I'd use it to reduce the file size of images used in websites (I'm a web developer / webdesigner). At the moment I use a very old tool that isn't developed any more (xat.com Professional Image Optimizer) but still produces better results than all the other tools I tested. I still have to test FILEminimizer, but the screenshots look nice. :)

ouialaraison Downloaded more than 12 hours ago, successively gave two different email addresses, and still no news from File Minimizer people. And yes, these addresses were correct and yes again, I checked my spam folders (found today: an insurance to provide for my funerals and a brush, they say sold by millions in the US, that can bring your lost hair back... but no registration key).
Oh well… my pictures will have to retain their 98% extra weight, I guess… :(

You only need the serial for Commercial use. If your about to use it for personal use only, just use it, no registration needed.

Also do note 98% less size on pitcures should acutally read "up to".
Basic it will dump something in your pictures to get a higher %.

ouialaraison @ Michael Johnsson

Thank you for your comment. I understand I can download and install the personal free version anytime direct from the developer’s site, but we don’t need BitduJour for that, do we? Here, we are supposed to get the commercial one! (I’m just being a pest, as I don’t intend to make business with it anyhow.)

As per the 98%, I understand also the concept of “up to”, like I might wait “up to” one more hour before giving up and going to sleep. :)

Chris I have had this program for a long time and I contacted the vendor about the registration code not being saved and I had to re-enter it every time I launched the program. They told me that that is the way it is supposed to be for the versions that they give away free. I guess it is not a big problem, considering it is free.

I also noticed that it y minimize a max of 500 images at once and if you try to do more it will tell you that you need to purchase the server edition and it only minimizes the first 500 images you added in to it.

Col- Hectorz This is not a commercial license.
It is a scam to induce the user to try the free version.
After a few test of the software, it show a nag screen telling me that I can not use-it for commercial purpose and giving me a link to bye the commercial suite.
I check the license, it turn back to the free one by it self, even if it accepted the commercial license.
In my book, the software editor is not to be trusted , BitsDuJour should be ashamed to let-it go for a second day.
This site and the editor both know this and they just ignore the comment.
So they know it is a scam, false representation witch is illegal.
It say a lot about that editor, you want to bye any thing from them ???

Bob McLain Why is it "great news" to extend an offer for software that can't be properly registered and that is provided by a vendor who can't be bothered answering questions?

Putting software on BitsduJour is about more than just moving product; it's an opportunity to demonstrate support skills.

This vendor doesn't get it.

Miroir Deco There is still a problem with the software registration. FILEminimizer Pictures offered here by balesio AG is Not a commercial license. It's just and only for personal use.

After submitting the registration details, it works, but after you open it again, the license converts back by itself to a free, non-commercial license. I tried 3 more times, and each time it returns to the free version. What a shame !

Jan-Christoph Ihrens @jay aich: "licence" is correct British English. ;) See http://www.future-perfect...icence.asp. The balesio AG comes from Switzerland, so the people there probably learned British English in school (like me, I'm from Germany).

As to your complaint: See the comments above.

@Miroir Deco: They don't seem to have much interest in this sale. Working on weekends obviously isn't something they like. ;) But the comment "there is currently a problem with this deal which means that we cannot bring you the reduced price! We're working on getting this fixed" at the top of the page probably means that the BDJ people are trying to clarify this.

Jan-Christoph Ihrens @feral1, Sue Long, joel kens: Just read the first sentence on this page:

"*** We're Sorry, but there is currently a problem with this deal which means that we cannot bring you the reduced price! We're working on getting this fixed. Please check back soon. If we can't fix the problem we usually run the deal again. ***"

Lewis Everall @Everybody

Excuse us for this issue. We found now the solution.

1. Please go to the index where you have installed FILEminimizer Pictures.

2. Then please delete the "Networkcode.lic" file.

3. Start FILEminimizer Pictures again, maybe you might have to enter the registration code again, if not it is ok.

feral1 OK Zemp,

How does one get the registration code, for the free offer to enter it if the system had a problem. I downloaded the trial but await the reg code. Can you clarify this "solution".

You would have to contact Mr Constantin Florea for this.

Constantin Florea @feral1 - I have searched our sales records for this promotion based on the contact information from your BitsDuJour profile (email address, first name, last name) and based on your display name "feral1" and couldn't find any entries. If you did go through the entire checkout process then I believe you have used another email address (different from the one on your BitsDuJour profile). If this is the case then please send it to us here: http://www.bitsdujour.com/contact so I may send you the receipt email to that address. Our system sends the receipt email only if you go through the entire checkout process, otherwise we won't be able to assign you any registration information.

Jan-Christoph Ihrens I'm not totally sure, but I guess feral1, Sue Long and joel kens tried to make use of the offer while the countdown was still active (second day of the offer), but the offer wasn't available ("there is currently a problem with this deal which means that we cannot bring you the reduced price"). Will the deal be available again in the next few days? Those three could take advantage of the offer then.

feral1 Unbelievable, a real mess. I get email about an offer not available and even more contact regarding it and ask a question about the offer and here I am. What is it all about?

Either make your software available or not. Extending it for another day while unavailable is back handed advertising. S far this type of advertising one does not need. Might suggest the software is as "buggy". You have my email. Pop me a reg code and download link or ...

Jan-Christoph Ihrens @feral 1: Well, I guess this is due to the fact that two companies are involved in this offer. The vendor, balesio AG, extended the offer for another day, and the BDJ people probably were the ones who blocked it because of the licensing issues...

As stated at the top of the page, normally deals that had to be stopped for any reasons are offered again a few days later. I suggest you wait some days instead of becoming furious. ;-) I never experienced a problem that BDJ didn't solve sooner or later. :)

Sue Long I started on the first day trying to get this offer. I tried again the second day. On that day, I downloaded the trial, but waited to install until I had a license number. I had gone to the giveaway page, but, as noted in my previous message, could find NO place to request said code through email. I never could find a registration page or form. I thought that by clicking "I Want It", I would get a pop-up, but I did not after three tries on the 2nd day. So then I thought that, since I had signed into the site, that it must be automatic. Apparently not, because I never got a registration email. I also looked yesterday for more explicit instructions on what to expect, but never found them on the BDJ or the software vendor's site. Very Frustrating.

Jan-Christoph Ihrens @Sue Long: When there's a "I Want It" button, the deal is not (yet) active. The button label changes to "Buy Now" when the deal is active.

I guess the FAQ (http://www.bitsdujour.com/about) could elaborate a little bit more on the basic things...

Constantin Florea @ouialaraison - I am sorry for previously missing your request regarding the receipt email. I just noticed it now and just resent you the receipt email. Please allow for 10 minutes and if you do not receive it, just let me know by commenting here or by contacting us using this page: http://www.bitsdujour.com/contact

ouialaraison @ Constantin: Thank you for your reply, I just found it. Actually, it was my mistake if I didn’t find your mail with the license code: it had gone directly into the folder where I store BdJ newsletter. (I will try to make a more accurate filter.) I just installed and activated, and will try the program as soon as I have the time. Thanks again and sorry.

Jan-Christoph Ihrens Registration worked after deleting the "Networkcode.lic" file, as suggested by Valentin Zemp - thanks for that!

FILEminimizer does a nice job, but one thing is disturbing: The "rotation" EXIF field is not taken into consideration. Almost every image viewer or tool reads this field and rotates photos taken in upright format so that they are displayed correctly. FILEminimizer ignores this so that those photos have to be rotated manually after the optimization. It would be nice if this could be corrected.

ouialaraison @ Jan-Christoph Ihrens
In “Configuration”, “Settings for images” tab (english GUI), have you tried checking the box “Keep EXIF/ Metadata”?

Jan-Christoph Ihrens @ouialaraison: Thanks for your comment, but I don't want to keep the EXIF data, I just want FILEminimizer to rotate the image according to the EXIF data before removing the EXIF data. I haven't found an option for that.
