Folder Scout Professional

Instant Access to Any Drive, Folder, or File

How much time do we all spend navigating to the correct location of our files and folders? The answer -- too much! Even if we've arranged our data in intuitive folder trees, it still takes too much time and effort to drill down to find the files that you need. There has to be a better way, and that better way is Folder Scout Professional.

Folder Scout Professional lets you instantly access any drive, folder, or file on your computer or network just by typing a few letters! With Folder Scout Professional you can bid farewell to the days of manually drilling through folder hierarchies and say hello to a high speed search engine that delivers results in real-time, as you type. And if you're a data hog, there's no need to worry, because Folder Scout Professional can easily handle thousands of folders. In fact, it typically taking less than a second to search 100,000 folders! Plus, the actual indexing of these folders has no adverse impact on system resources or performance.

And if the ability to quick-search files and folders wasn't enough, you can set up Folder Scout Professional with Favorite Folders, Recent Folders, and Recent Documents, giving you the power to open and access these locations with just a single click!

Tore Hoyem - Folder Scout Professional is licensed per computer, so if you want to install Folder Scout Professional on multiple computers you will have to purchase multiple licenses.

- Folder Scout Professional may be used at exactly the same time on multiple computers.

Q1) These two policy paragraphs seem to contradict each other. The question we usually ask on BDJ is "Can I use it on my desktop PC AND my laptop (but not at the same time)?"

Q2) Also, if I have Directory Opus, can Folder Scout make to last used lister from DO jump to the selected folder, instead of using Windows Explorer?

Cheers.
Jan 3 at 1:15am
Paul Scout Hi Tore,

Answer to Q1) I agree with you. I was also a little bit confused when I read the paragraphs yesterday, while setting up everything for today promotion.

The first paragraph is quite clear ( multiple computers = multiple licenses) and the second , IMHO, does not really reflects what our policy really means: Folder Scout can be installed on the same computer for as many users as you want. That is, license is by computer and not by user. During install procedure you can select 'only for this user' or 'anyone who uses this computer'. So definitively the term "may be used at exactly the same time on multiple computers" must be a typo or misunderstood between me and BitsDuJour . We will fix it as soon as possible.

And finally, the answer to your question Q1:

For non-professional use: It is logical that you use it in your home PC and home laptop. Not strictly right but we admit this case as normal.

For professional use: There should be a license for your own computer and another for your company's computer. If both computer belong to your company, they should buy two licenses.

Answer to Q2) If i have understand the question correctly, you want to search the target folder using Folder Scout and once you find it, jump to it but opening it inside DO and not with Windows File Explorer. In this case, the answer is Yes: Folder Scout allows users to customize it (Application Preferences - Applications) to use an alternative file search tool, an alternative file explorer and an alternative command shell. I'm not an Directory Opus expert and you should find the right run parameters to make DO start on a certain folder that Folder Scout will send as argument. I have tested successfully this feature launching Total Commander and other similar utilities.

Please, contact me at support@folderscout.com to help you with this task if you need help.

Software Guy Very handy little utility, especially if you work with a large number of files. With per computer licensing, it is clearly set up for networked or business applications where several people are using a single computer. For the individual user with a desktop and a a laptop, per computer licensing makes the utility quite expensive. It is prohibitively expensive for the power user - meaning someone with a desktop, laptop and netbook.
IMHO the best licensing allows for EITHER per computer licensing for multiuser computers OR user licenses for individuals who own desktops and laptops (and maybe even an additional netbook) but not both per license. Hopefully the developer might consider a friendlier policy for individual users - meaning most of us - because this is a nice utility.

Paul Scout Hi Software Guy,

Thanks for your comments about our little app.

Please, also have a look to my answer to Q1) from Tore Hoyem. I'm sure our friendly policy will make you and every power user very happy !

VLM Software Guy, do you have experience so that you can compare this utility with Listary? Thanks!
Jan 3 at 9:09am
Tore Hoyem I'm testing Folder Scout right now, and it looks quite useful (even though I have some similar-ish apps already).

However, I have some problems getting it to work with PowerCmd as my shell replacement. Apparently PC gets confused by a string you send it.
Is there a way to have FS not send this string?

Cheers.
Jan 3 at 9:12am
Paul Scout Hi again Tore,

Folder Scout always sends the selected path as argument. This will allow any command shell replacement application to be opened at user selected path (a very useful feature under DOS command shell).

The exact call made by Folder Scout is: shell_replacement_app + custom_arguments + user_selected_path.

A quick and easy solution to avoid current path to be received by your shell replacement app is using an intermediate .bat or similar script file. Then, you put this .bat or script in 'Application Preferences - Applications - Command shell' text box. Folder Scout will call it as an alternative command shell. From inside this script, you can call you shell replacement app using any option or argument you want. Don't hesitate contact me at support@folderscout.com to help you with this solution.

Tore Hoyem Follow up question:
FC doesn't "integrate" with standard file save/open dialogs, the way Listary and others do, as far as I can see.

Did I miss something, or is this functionality planned for a future release?
Jan 3 at 9:39am
Paul Scout Hi Tore,

The integration with Open and Save dialogs is not implemented in current release.

By the way, as E.S. mentioned in previous promotion comment (see 'Load 13 Older Comments' on top of 'The Conversation' ), "I urgently recommend to read the help file and try out the "tips and tricks".

That is, Folder Scout comes with some tips in the "Tips and Tricks" section for "Using Folder Scout when opening or saving files from any Windows application". This section show users a basic technique to Open/Save files on the desired folder from Folder Scout, without any Open/Save integration feature.

I am working currently on Open/Save dialogs integration and will be included in future releases.

Users should also know that Windows don't makes it easy for developers to implement this feature, with substantial changes from XP to Vista/Seven. In fact, many apps with this feature working on XP are now been re-written for Vista/Seven.

Don't hesitate to comment if you have any other question.

Edward Smith Bought the program (actually 2), it works great, but I can't figure out how to exclude a subdirectory??
Jan 3 at 10:17am
Bernhard K Dear Paul,

I really don't like to argue about license policies but I don't understand your policy in the sidebar of BitsDuJour.

Item 2 says that Folder Scout is licensed per computer and I will have to buy a license for each machine.

Item 3 says that Folder Scout "may be used at exactly the same time on multiple computers". That's a pure matter of course if I buy multiple licenses. Otherwise, I think I schouldn't buy any license. Sorry!
Jan 3 at 11:01am
Nico Westerdale Bernhard,

The sidebar policy is our text, so don't blame Paul!

Let me explain, look at these two points:

- Folder Scout Professional may be installed on a single computer and a laptop.
- Folder Scout Professional may not be used at exactly the same time on multiple computers.

The "exact same time" refers to the fact that you can install the software on a single computer AND a laptop, however you can't use it at the exact same time on both.

Makes sense?
Bits du Jour Admin - Jan 3 at 11:03am
Chriss B I am a little bit confused about the product: AVIRA Browser Protection rates the publishers downloadsite http://www.folderscout.co....0.215.exe as "potentially dangerous".

What could be the reason ?
Jan 3 at 11:05am
Paul Scout Hi Edward Smith,

Thanks for your comments.

You can exclude drive categories by group (Network, Removable or Fixed) and also any drive individually. I am sorry but current version indexes each drive completely so there is no way to exclude a certain folder.
Of course if several users find useful excluding custom selected folders it could be included in next releases.

Paul Scout Chriss,

We have been in the market since 2007, passed hundreds of anti-virus test without problems. It is the first time I hear about this.

Please have a look to this report from download3k.com as one of many examples:

As you could see, includes Avira report with "Clean" result, among other popular antivirus software.

HJ B 1. This is the second time, recently, that the phrase "can be used" and the phrase "cannot be used" are used in a very unclear way. I assume that if someone has this application installed on two computers, he can use it on both computers at the same time; however, in doing so, he would be violating his license provisions. Is that the case here? Or do we have a situation where the software or the big guy in the sky is capable of barring multiple simultaneous uses?

2. The matter is further complicated by virtue of the fact that one of the selling points of the software is that, at my computer, I can quickly get to files that are on other computers or devices on the same local area network.

a, Can it go further than LANs?

b. To yjr extent that another computer on the LAN is not sharing some or all of its files, is FolderScout capable of penetrating any such protected computers or drives?
Jan 3 at 5:16pm
Glen Hilton Paul, thanks for offering the standard version for those of us that don't require the network option.
Just a small suggestion. An option to minimize or hide the logo panel for registered users would free up some useable space for netbook use. Glen
Jan 3 at 6:17pm
lisba f Still no Unicode, I guess?
Jan 3 at 6:31pm
Paul Scout Hi HJB,

Answer to 1) Please, have a look to my answer to Q1) from Tore Hoyem. I'm sure our friendly policy will make you happy !

Answer to 2.a) Well, we have some companies using the software in their WAN (Wide Area Network), that is, they are using Folder Scout to search folders between different office branches. Of course, this case is not the case of a home user with a small LAN. The company should by licenses strictly 'by computer'.

Answer to 2.b) Folder Scout just runs over Windows and only resources authorized by Windows can be accessed. No magic here !.

Don't hesitate to comment if you have any other question.

Brad Perrault Paul,

I really like this application, very fast searches, a really handy piece of software.

What I really appreciate is the "friendly" licensing policy you stated above for Tore respecting home users. I purchased your software when you stated:

"For non-professional use: It is logical that you use it in your home PC and home laptop. Not strictly right but we admit this case as normal."

This is very cool of you to allow a single user with two computers i.e; Desktop/Laptop the flexibility of installing this single license on both machines. While reinforcing as long as this license is not used on both machines concurrently you folks are OK with a second install.

While it does bend the exactness of your license model, you clearly state if the software is used for business or professional use the expectation for these entities is to purchase a license per machine.

I do appreciate this kind of practical accommodation in a Software Company/Developer when dealing with the average home user.

And thanks for the discount also!

Cheers, Brad
Jan 3 at 7:51pm
Paul Scout Hi Glen,

You are right. Although every panel can be resized and even be hidden (Root Folder Quick Jump) to have more space, hidding logo panel should be an option. There also users asking for an option to hide splash screen during application startup. We will consider both option for next releases.

Regards,
Folder Scout Labs Vendor - Jan 3 at 7:59pm
Paul Scout Hi Lisba,

The version we are offering today (v1.3) is barely 3 months old so there was no changes since October 2011. I am sorry. Unicode will be implemented for future releases. I will contact you.
