J S Apart from the fact you have online license activation it all sounds pretty good to me.

I had initially thought the program was a ''dialog tracker'' and gave the user access to ''x" number of previously accessed Files or Folders in the Windows ''Save As'' or ''Open File'' box - which is a program that I'm actually looking for ... (suggestions anyone?)

Q1. any chance or adding this dialog tracking functions to the Windows ''Save As'' & ''Open File'' boxes, in an upcoming version?)

However upon having a look around your website and the FAQ's etc. the program is of interest to me and I have 2 more questions:

Q1. What happens if for example, You boot up in safe mode and make changes to the folder or its contents, OR, somebody other than yourself uses Windows Explorer to make a change to an existing folder or its contents?

Q2. If the service was off (for some inexplicable reason), and someone makes changes to the folder (or its contents), does the program throw a wobbly and say it cant sort out what has happened or that it is a new folder, OR does it simply record the alterations as the next change or version in the recorded list of changes?

The software its self does not communicate online. It gives you a short code that you enter at http://register.foldertrack.com and the website immediately returns the code you need to register the software.

By doing a "Save As", you are telling your computer to keep the old and new version of a file. If you are running FolderTrack on a file then the old and new version are automatically stored. To directly answer your question there is currently not a plan to integrate with the "Save As" box.

There are plans to integrate the software with the Windows explorer. Therefore you be able to right click a file, view all of the past versions, and open the one you want. But this function would not be integrated with the "Open File" box.

These are interesting ideas and I will add them as a possible future enhancement.

If you boot up in safe mode then the FolderTrack service will not run. In this case your files will not be tracked. The FolderTrack service runs as a system user so it makes no diference who modifies the files FolderTrack will still track the changes.

It simply records the alterations as the next change. The only weied behavior would be if the user did a rename. FolderTrack would record the rename as a delete of the old file and an add of a new one.

Peter Martin Sounds interesting software. May I suggest something, the ability to save also in another storage in the computer say an sd card so that in case the computer gets corrupted, odds are that it still accessible in the sd card. Also add encryptation for confidential files in case the sd or USB card gets lost.
Once I lost my confidential files when my computer was corrupted. Now I have my files automatically backed up in an sd card when saving in my hard drive , but my sd card is not encrypted. So I am still apprehensive and watch my sd card closely

Nick Coombs Thans Peter,
The ability to let users define multiple locations (ftp, sd card, remove drive, ...) to save the files is planed for the the next major release. Encryption is a good idea I will add this to the future enhancement list. The issue with encryption is export laws. I also want to say that Purachers of 1.x versions of the software get unlimited free upgrades so as these features become available you will get them.

When we want to track changes on files, does it track changes based on the file timestamps or on the file contents?

The short answer is it tracks based on file contents.

If you change a file's timestamp, without changing the files contents, FolderTrack will not count that as a change.

However in some programs you could open up a file, make no modifications, Save the file and the actuall bits that the program writes to the computer will be different from the bits that were there before the save. FolderTrack will consider such a file changed even though from the user's perspective the two versions of the file are the same just with different timestamps.

You are allowed to install a license on 3 computers from the website without contacting support. If you need to use the software on more than 3 computers you may have to contact support.

Stephane M Thanks Nick, I was looking for a tracker based on file contents, so it sounds good.
Regarding the license, that is great because I thought it was just for only one computer.

Yes buyers of versions of 1.x versions of the software get free upgrades to all versions of the software v2, v3, etc...

The website will reset the 3 computer count for the 1.x purchasers so that they will not have to contact support for their update.

You will receive an email from me to fix this. In the mean time the software works free for a 30 days. And even after 30 days it continues to track. Thanks for reporting this problem.

M K G Sounds like a much needed application. I have been looking for such a one a couple of years back, and could not find anything. The licencing policy also seems to very user friendly. I hope Foldertrack is back at BitsDuJour so that we get a chance to buy it. :-)
