What are people saying about GoalEnforcer Hyperfocus

W Ma Can I do any customizing? I would like to use different colors i.e. for task priority and for pending (tasks that are on hold till something is done, perhaps by another person).
Can I add hyperlinks, in goal label, or in notes?

Adrian User You can add a hyperlink by clicking the "LINK" button (top toolbar).
Here's a short video on how to do it:

http://www.goalenforcer.c...erlink.gif

You can add hyperlinks to web addresses, files, emails or folders.

For theme selection: click the "Open" button (top toolbar, second button from the left), then select the "Options" menu entry.

Task color customization: we might add this feature to the next release. Task color customization and some extra badges (other than the hyperfocus badge).

Also, the Hyperfocus Zone should help you with priorities. Check this lesson to understand how it works:

W Ma Yes, Adrian User, more customization and more badges/filter views would be helpful and appreciated.

I have thought of several ideas for the software, if that can be of any help:

1) If you haven't already got this feature, being able to create and save more than one hyperfocus group would be great. It seems like a useful feature that wouldn't take much work to develop and make available.

It is because I might have an overview hyperfocus, ie for the day, that might include continuing work on several of my large projects. As I switch focus between projects, each project could have its own specific hyperfocus which I'd update (and save) as the project moves forward. This would allow running starts on projects as I return to them.

2) You mentioned that color customization and some new badges might be added in the next release. That and other customizations might allow for some GTD style viewing and/or filtering and reporting.

For example, when I am waiting on something out of my control, I want to easily see when I look at my project goals/steps that I am 'waiting' on something, so I can keep on top of it, be ready to act when the waiting is over, and not have to keep it in mind while I am waiting.

For 'next steps', there are different possibilities including using different savable hyperfoci, ie there could be a 'next step' hyperfocus for each project. There could also be icons that could be attached to the goals to indicate GTD elements like 'next step'. If so, I would consider adding capacity to filter a project by such icons or other customizations.

3) Perhaps you have already considered how icons might optionally be added to the goals. You already add icons (like that to indicate an attached note).

It would be most useful if we could import our own icons. That would allow for more personalization, and quicker icon awareness when using the same icons across multiple project and planning software. It also gets you off the hook of choosing which icons to include in a library, or how big a library to offer. Libraries can always be added later.

It would be very useful and visually informative if I could choose the location on the goal where I add an icon. Therefore, specific and independent locations could be reserved to show specific info/icons. To start, goal circles can be seen as having 4 outer quadrants for locating additional icons. Attached note icon uses one of the quadrants.

4) Finally, I did check your clip on adding hyperlinks. It seems that on the map a hyperlink is visually not much different from a goal circle. If so, adding hyperlinks can quickly obscure/clutter the goal view.

To keep the goal view simply about the goals while also indicating the presence and names of hyperlinks, perhaps an icon indicating there are hyperlinks could be added to the relevant goal. Hovering the icon could trigger a pop-up list of all that goal's attached hyperlinks, each one of which could be clicked. (I'd keep the list open until you leave the list, for speedier opening of multiple links.) It is good to allow descriptive naming of links (like you seem to already do), instead of only showing link addresses on the pop-up list.

Adrian User Thank you for your valuable suggestions, I've added them as feature requests for future releases.
Regarding 1):
- Suppose each project is stored as a separate project file (.gef).
- Each project file does have its own Hyperfocus Zone.
So, you just need an analyzer, which scans all projects and create a global Hyperfocus Zone.
Is that what you need?

Or do you actually need the same project file to have more than one Hyperfocus Zone?

W Ma I can see how each project file would have its own hyperfocus zone. It should also be easy to enable opening of multiple files at the same time. Also, it would be easy to have the hyperfocus zone autosave so that another day, it is easy to pick up the project where I left it. However, I would still encourage having multiple hyperfocus zones per file.

If I am following a hyperfocus zone for a project and I come to a step that is important to do as quickly as possible, but can’t be done till later in the day, then I could assign a copy of that step to a separate hyperfocus zone that allows me to focus on items even after I am not specifically engaged in its related project. In a sense, the item gets ‘escalated’. Since the item is a duplicate, any item changes need to update in all copies of the item.

Generally, I see the benefit of the software as providing both inclusivity and ordering of goals along with the capacity for flexible hyperfocusing on those goals.

Here are some of the desirable features in this regard:
- Inclusivity of all goals – so, out of my mind, yet usefully located.
- Hyperfocus zones at different goal/project levels with autosave.
- Quick, easy, intuitive navigation across goals and hyperfocus zones.
- Link of duplicate items, so change a copy changes all copies. (Could have a toggle +/or preference to turn this link on or off.
- Button and keyboard shortcut to create and label new hyperfocus zones.
- Quick navigation of all hyperfocus zones. Could be a drop-down list, but a side pane with toggled autohide, or stay open would be better. Allows greater interactivity of planning and hyperfocus zoning.
- Drag and hover an item over a hyperfocus zone in the side pane could open that zone allowing specific placement of the item in the zone. The target hyperfocus zone could open in a split window view with the main window. Options could be set to allow the pane to close when the pointer leaves it, or to autohide, or to stay open. There should be a toggle switch on the pane for these options. As a bonus, I’d make panes dockable and re-sizable.
- Tab functions on main window would allow different levels/views of goals and projects to be open and readily switchable. Maybe tabs open with hover.

That is probably enough for now. Expensive mind mapping software can be tweaked to do some of this, but not easily, and comes with a lot of program clutter and overload - and that negates the goal-planning and ‘day-planning’ clarity and speed potential of GoalEnforcer.

If the software does bring forward the kind of feature set I’ve suggested, it is quite possible for some bigger-scaled users to have a number of working hyperfocus zones. While I’ve emphasized the benefit of inclusivity of goals, I have also emphasized the benefit of hyperfocus zones. Too many zones on a list would compromise that. The answer would be to add a ‘hide’ function (this isn’t the autohide feature).

Hide, applied to the hyperfocus zones list, would selectively show:
1) All parent, all siblings, and all descendent hyperfocus zones, or
2) Only the hyperfocus zone of the main window’s top goal and it’s descendent hyperfocus zones.

Other ‘hide’ options, that I don’t think would be useful, include:
1) All sibling hyperfocus zones of the current main window top goal, and all their descendent hyperfocus zones.
2) All siblings of the top goal, but only the descendants of that goal.

Best wishes,

Adrian User > How to mark goals by Priority?
Two options:

1. Place higher priority goals at lower number positions on the wheel (like a clock: one o'clock would be higher priority, you should accomplish it first):
For example positions 1, 2, 3 on the screenshot on the top of this page.

2. Use the hyperfocus zone to tag and view high priority goals:
http://www.goalenforcer.c..._Zone.html
http://www.goalenforcer.c..._Zone.html

Also:
- Set the due date (any)
- Set the start date (today)
This goal will always show up as yellow, unless you constantly update it with the expected progress.

Ronald Jurman First of all, many thanks for the reply.

Perhaps Tags (similar to, but distinct from, those used as hyperfocus markers) for Importance (which can otherwise get confused with Urgency), allowing for multiple levels such as High, Medium, Low.

Regards,

Ron

Adrian User Thank you for you suggestion, added to the feature request list. Notice that it's similar to WMa proposal (see above) of "4 outer quadrants for locating additional icons."
