Tim Haughton Hi Peter, Home Document Manager is a work in progress and will continue to be so.

We're currently working on version 2 of the software which will be a radical improvement to version 1 (free upgrade to v2), featuring sharing files between different computers in a home, editing and annotating PDFs etc, as well as some options for storing documents in the cloud.

As for bugs, it is developed on Win 7 x64 and I use it every day on that platform, what bugs are you seeing?

Tim Haughton Hi Staley, Home Document Manager uses web based deployment and online activation. I accept that some users don't like this, so if it's a problem for you, by all means look elsewhere.

Version 2 of Home Document Manager uses a "standard" windows installer and an offline licensing mechanism.

v1 customers will receive a free upgrade to v2.

Peter Gabriel I presume this was a bug: I tried to import a jpg file which was named with numbers, and each time the program crashed. I renamed the file using letters and the program imported without a problem.

The program has crashed a couple of times for no apparent reason, although that may not necessarily be the program's fault.

I do like the program though, and seeing as the upgrade to version 2 will be free I think I'll be purchasing.

Michael K I was going to ask for clarification on licensing and then found the answer in an older post from the vendor that I'm reprinting below for those who may not have found it.

As a home user with a small family network of 4 computers I find it helpful to load most of my software on all the computers and from the developer's earlier post, I see I can do that with this software

I would appreciate knowing when version 2 is set for release and also something about the "radical" improvements that will be incorporated.

In common with some previous posters to the conversation, I too am a Paperport user that likes the editing features it incorporates although I've never gone beyond version 9 because of the bad reviews the later versions seem to receive.

As well as annotating, using drawing tools and cleaning up crease marks etc. I can straighten a skewed scanned image within Paperport - would I lose these features in moving to Home Document Manager and if so what what I get in instead that should make the switch compelling?

I'd appreciated knowing what benefit the developer believes this program has over Paperport if I am to be encouraged to make a switch.

Tim Haughton @Terry, some answers:

1) The program uses Microsoft's ClickOnce technology for installation. ClickOnce programs are not stored under program files as they do not require administrator permissions to be installed or updated. It's the same mechanism Google use for their Chrome browser for example.

2) Home Document Manager maintains it's own internal structure. You can import entire folder structures by dragging a folder from Windows Explorer and dropping it onto a folder in Home Document Manager.

3) The data files can be kept anywhere you like. In the options menu you can move your data folder or switch to another repository.

4) I think he was referring to DropBox.

5) The only time the application sends any data is in the unlikely event of a crash - just enough information to help us fix the problem. Even then it is entirely optional and no personal information or documents are ever sent.

6) I'm pretty relaxed on licensing. If you're a home user, I'm happy for you to use the application on multiple machines within your home. Because of how the licensing works, you can't currently share the data folder between different machines.

7) Agreed. An integrated help file is on my To-Do list.

Yes you can. In addition, v2 of HDM will add the option of using a central document "server" and having all documents stored centrally.

So would I, but experience forbids me from speculating. I don't believe that software developers should estimate release dates beyond the season (because we're notoriously bad at it), so I will say it will be released this summer.

Good question:

- Home Document Manager, PDF Scan Pro and eDoc annotator will be rolled into one product, allowing more powerful scanning experience, as well as annotation.

- I've already mentioned the server version...

- We've already added some image processing since last time, including despeckle, auto-rotate and auto-deskew. We will add a whole suite of processing commands (e.g. hole punch removal)

- The new user interface will be a radical departure. It will no longer look like Outlook. We will be using the new Microsoft Metro UI design language.

- There will also support different types of repository:

----- A local database similar to what is used now.
----- A simple repository that just uses your file system for organising and searching.
----- A server based database which can store documents centrally within a home or small office.

- We're also tentatively looking at what we might call "cloud" options, these include:

-----A hosted server, where you can store your documents online with us.
-----Generic cloud storage (e.g. Box.net, Amazon S3 etc)
-----Google Docs repository, allowing you to scan straight into Google Docs and use that as your "server".
----- Possibly Evernote.

Paperport is the 800lb gorilla and it is just one part of Nuance's business. Home Document Manager is driven by its users, and unlike Nuance, I do listen. I can't compete with the resources Nuance can throw at a project, but I do hope I can provide users with a product that they have a say in developing.

Scott Kettman I bought this the last time it was offered and have been very happy with its performance. If I remember correctly the last time it was offered comments were made here and the author made changes as a result. I have had no problems importing or using this program in any way. One point that does concern me is if you delete a item it stays in the data base, it does not display but if you deleted frequently this could cause the data base to become larger than necessary.

Support is superb and the program is easy to use. I highly recommend this program.

With regards to deleted items, yes HDM has a "Deleted Documents" folder. To empty the trash, simply right click on "Deleted Documents" and select "Clear Deleted Items".

I am going to buy Home Document Manager today for reasons I will go no to explain. I do have some additional questions and will put those first.

1) As I said previously, i have been a long term user of Paperport but now i think the time has come to make a switch I don't want to continually do a feature comparison but on the other hand your product can only benefit from providing the best features of your competitor products.

I like "nice' looking scanned images and two of the Paperport features I use on virtually all my scans are the ability to straighten up skewed images and the second one is using the eraser throughout a scan to remove stray dots, lines, block colour, creases and in fact anything that I don't want to remain on the image. Does your software already incorporate these features and if not, do you envisage that your version 2 will?

2) In buying your software I note that V2 is going to be a total revamp and also include result in an amalgamation of all your 3 existing programs rolled into this 1 single product which I like the idea of, a lot..
My thought is to buy your Home Document Manager today but not install or use it until Version 2 is released and then I can benefit from all the changes you are introducing hopefully in the not too distant future and t would save on migrating from V1 to V2. Your thoughts on this approach would be much appreciated.

3) Can existing scans on my computer be imported into your program without losing any of your program's features such as OCR and annotation etc.

Since this post is already rather long, i will provide my full reasons for deciding to join your customer base today, in a separate post.

Tim Haughton Hi Michael,

- The current version of Home Document Manager already features auto-rotate and auto-deskew, as well as auto-despeckle.

- Any migration required by v2 will be automated. Whether you choose to use it now or wait for v2 is a decision for you, as you can imagine, I might be biased :)

- You can import existing scans into Home Document Manager, as well as PDFs, Microsoft Office documents, XPS documents etc. If required, HDM will OCR when importing.

Michael K Tim, many thanks for the swift response - only one fruther clarification please....
"auto" deskew sounds great as does "auto" despeckle.
However, what are your thoughts on being able to add a manual feature in case the 'auto' does not get it quite right.

And a manual eraser would do more than just allow despeckling - a user could erase parts of the scan they just don't want in there for whatever reason - is this possible?

With regards to why I j am joining your customer base today the key reasons are these:

1) You are demonstrating yourself to be a responsive and committed developer to both your product and your customers.

i have come to this conclusion based on the fact that you are rolling the 3 existing programs into a single all encompassing Home Document Manager v2 rather than leaving them separate applications.

Your answer to a previous buyer of v1 that you will be upgrading all existing customers to v2 free of charge, not just those that are buying today fills me with great confidence in your business practices and customer satisfaction commitment.

I also like your practical and flexible approach to allowing several installations in a home setting. I get the feeling I don't have to think of every single question before I buying, but rather that I am making a commitment to a developer who is fair, ethical and committed to both product enhancement and customer service.

This is why I am on board with you today.

It's certainly worth looking at. I'll make a note to investigate it when I'm completing that part of the application.

Redaction and erasing will be available as tools as part of the annotation suite.

Gren Bingham OK, you said that I cannot sync repositories kept on different machines so, can I sensibly merge them? That is to say add one to another somehow.

Can I keep the repository easily on either an external drive, or on a large USB stick?

You get the idea that I like to be mobile without lugging too much hardware.

I think you should add the possibility of an easy link to cloud storage.

Can I easily export a particular PDF from the repository?

Tim Haughton Hi Gren, merging isn't supported. You can export Home Document Manager's documents in a folder structure to a folder on disk, you could then conceivably import the same structure into another repository.

The repository can be stored on USB or external drive no problem, but it can be accessed only by one machine. Or, more accurately, only 1 machine will be able to write to it.

Tim Haughton Hi Yang, if there's a limit, I haven't found it yet. We use a very powerful indexing engine which is designed to work with VERY large repositories.

Unless you were using Home Document Manager to digitise a public library, you aren't likely to have a problem. Otherwise, you're limited only by disk space.

Gren Bingham It is really too bad that you do not handle multi-page documents from a flatbed scanner because the scanner's software does ... it will create multi-page PDFs. Most homes do NOT have an auto feed scanner that feeds the PC.

Would it not possible at least to merge PDF pages within the app into a single document?

The application has become much less attractive because nearly all my bills, bank statements, letters, etc., are MULTI PAGE!!! Most of the world is, in fact.

Uses A Watch Folder
Traditionally, Home Document Manager has worked with TWAIN scanners, which we all know the ScanSnap does not support. The way they did it is using a watch folder. You configure ScanSnap Manager to save the PDF to a folder, and then configure Home Document Manager to watch that folder. Whenever you scan something using the ScanSnap (or, of course, just save the file in that folder), Home Document Manager will import it. You can either use ScanSnap's OCR or Home Document Manager's.

HDM has a comprehensive blog post showing how it's all done.

I am glad I find this Home Document Manager through BitsDuJour. I have experience with a lot of software when its database growing larger its speed slows down. Yes, the watchfolder solution works.

You have to scan in the documents with HDM closed or HDM picks up each page as a single document. If HDM is closed while scanning, then opened it picks up the multi-page PDF documents correctly. I have tested this with a two page and three page document scanned into the watchfolder.

Don Wagner I have been using HDM for several months but I have never been able to find where the database is stored. I have no idea if the database is being backed up during my nightly backups. This makes me somewhat uneasy about putting my documents into HDM for safe storeing.

M B I purchased this program after you stated v2 will have off-line activation, and have installed the program, but have a question I need the answer to ,please.

Where is the program installed? It did not offer me a way to select the path where I wanted it installed;which is a problem if it is on drive C for me personally.

I run a SSD (80gig) for the OS which is drive C, and have a 500gig drive (drive E) for all programs.

Is there a way to tell the program where to install? If not please incorporate this into an update please

I cannot afford to install anything to drive C as it defeats the purpose of the drive and it only have little space left.

Tim Haughton @M B - Home Document Manage use's Microsoft's ClickOnce technology for deployment. This is a sandboxed per-user installation.

All ClickOnce apps are installed under "AppData" in a user profile, not in Program Files. The only way I can think of to alter this is by moving the user profile location to your larger drive.

I used the trial for a bit and bought the software today. Is there a Help file? I see a Help tab, but not a help file nor any documentation. The support button goes to an mail form rather than a web help page or FAQ. Am I missing something? I've read comments here and there about this having an Outlook-like interface, but I don't use Outlook, so I don't have that kind of prior knowledge to figure it out.

I have some really basic questions. How do you get started with this? What is the Postbox vs. Inbox? What does the yellow Documents button do? How do you tag?

I scanned three documents and one doesn't show up in the Postbox list, but if I enter a search word from the document's title in the search box, then the document appears. What could be different about that document?

I moved one document to a folder (the pre-exisitng Personal folder). Shouldn't the icon change at the very least so that when I'm looking at the file folders I can tell which ones have documents in them and which ones are empty? (Ideally a number indicating how many documents are in folder would be useful. Consider that a feature request.)

I'm looking forward to v2, but for now I can use some guidance with the current version.

K X When a document is listed by title and date in the middle panel, some of the OCR text is displayed. If I stretch the middle panel to make it wider I can read more, but still not that much, and it ends with ". . ." Is there a way to easily see all the text at a glance? I tried right click and properties and thought the full OCR generated text might be accessible from there.

Tim Haughton Hi Charles, a quick Google on "port 8612" suggests it's something to do with Canon's printer driver, it's certainly nothing I'm doing.

The only times HDM will connect to the internet is for checking for updates, activating and reporting bugs.

Adrian Williams I've just bought the software as it seems to do the job, just as well as paperport (albeit a bit slimmed down) I look forward to getting the new version. Installation of the demo and subsequent activation went without a hitch on my win7 32 bit system. I've used paperport and other doc managers. My main one is waggleimage and I've over 11,800 pages in that system. I'm intending to import the majority of those documents into HDM but I may just import this years - lots of work. I like the ability to do searches across the whole folder structure so if I file a document in the wrong folder I can still find it, a definite weakness in waggleimage. Then I can drag the document to the correct folder - nice.
I've a canon mp780 multi function printer/scanner but recently got a fujitsu scansnap FI-4110EOX2 off ebay at a ridiculously low price. I successfully set up the automatic importing of a scanned file and the twain setup for the MP780 works fine.
Overall, an nice setup. I'm not that worried about DRM and I DO backup and restore my system but I use rollback RX and drive cloner rx so re-activation shouldn't be an issue. it's a shame I cant access my documents on my laptop (waggleimage is going towards server based document sharing so +1 to wagglesoft). Come on Dokix, you're losing potential sales due to this. that aside, I like the simplicity and power of the software and will be actively suggesting improvements.

Roberto Im having some issues about documents lost in HDM. I tryed to reproduce it but still no success about find a pattern.

Sometimes the pdf is not listed more in the content folder, and sometimes i delete all (recicle bin too) and the Originals folder is still containing the pdf.

I wish to have some way to clean a search too.

Another problem, this one i can reproduce is:
- open the context menu from Documents tree
- clic in another folder
- a move folder dialog appears

I think this is not the normal behaviour.

A forum in the developers website would be nice, and a help file too :)

After the recovery everything on the computer ran perfectly, exept HDM. It kept reporting an error and asked to report it.I jinally had to uninstall HDM and reinstall it. The program run fine now but I want to have all my old data setup inthe folders and they way they were in the old install. I have a copy of the o;d HDM data folder but cannot figure how to get my okd setting. I tried replacing the new data folder with the new but then the program will not start again. Can you help me out. I like HDM very much, it has really helped me get organized.

Adrian Williams This may not help you with your current issue but it'll avoid having the same problem again. - keep your data on a separate drive than C:
If you've only a C drive - create a new partition and name it something like 'data'. keep all your documents and HDM data on that drive thereby having windows recovery or any other backup software from overwriting your data. If you did a restore as in factory restore, you may have lost all your data as the entire partition is overwritten (if it's some form of imaging software you used). better still, use spideroak - it's free and gives you secure offline backup so if you lose your PC through crash or breakdown - you always have the data offline.

One other option os to completely uninstall HDM, clean out the registry for stray entries - use ccleaner - it's free. reboot, reinstall HDM nd start again. if you do get your data folder back - use the import facility. OK, you will have to create your filing structure again but at least you get up and running again. If the software doesn't install - it's a problem for the support guys like Tim.

Adrian Williams HDM keeps the documents with 'weird' hexadecimal filenames. Before I completely finish renaming all my imported files and dragging them to their respective folders, I rely on the OCR to find the documents. Not the cleanest of solutions but a solution all the same.
Re the 'proper names' maybe HDM keeps the original filename in the document header or something. There must be some reference to it. Only HDM can help here. I've looked at one of my pdfs within HDM and can't see any obvious way to view the original pdf filename.
