What are people saying about Hyper Plan

Michael R. Is there a way to append one or more files to a plan?
If not, is this feature planned (as free update)?
Jan 24 2015 at 12:15am Copy Link

Andy Brice Each card has a 'notes' field for free text. So you can paste a URL in there. But it won't be clickable.

The ability to associate links (http, file or mailto) with cards is on our 'wishlist' of new features and is something we may well add in a future v1 release. However we never make any promises about the content or date of future release. So you should base your purchasing decision on the current product.

Out of interest, what sort of files did you want to add? Did you want to link to them or embed them in the Hype Plan file?

Michael R. Thanks for the answer. Perhaps you might want to consider allowing to connect any type of file with an entry. So a click on this link might run the default application for this link. E.g. if it is a doc-file, it is opened by Word, ...

Andy Brice That is the sort of functionality we were thinking of. It is easy enough to code, it is just a question of getting the user interface right.

Is the software compatible with a service like dropbox?

Andy Brice We aren't currently working on an iPad version. But it is a possibility if we get enough interest.

All the data is stored in a single operating system file for each plan, so you could use DropBox (or similar) to distribute plans across multiple machines. We do that ourselves. Also, the file format is the same for Windows and Mac, so you can save a plan on Windows and open on Mac (or vice versa).

peter schleifer From the vendor's site:
"You will get a free upgrade to v2 if we release it within 90 days of your purchase of v1. You will get a 60% discount when purchasing v2 if we release it more than 90 days after your purchase of v1."

This is without any possible doubt one of the least advantageous upgrade/update policies I've seen in my life, just slightly/theoretically better than "as-it-is-and-not-even-minor-debugging".

HP came to my attention from the author's site (he's got an instructive blog about optimized software marketing (!)), just some weeks ago, where HP was 0.x (cf. the current (!), short intro vid over there: 0.4xx), so it's quite safe to assume we are deemed to buy a sort of "final beta" = "1.0", with no more functionality (but hopefully less bugs if there were any?) than those betas.

In its current form, HP is not that useful yet; users who would like to link just ONE file to one screen element, should have a look at TheBrain (free version), and users who need to link more than just one file at the same time to some category (and to multiple categories), should have a look at Tabbles (free version here again, and which works a little bit differently, also, but could serve your purpose (as could possibly some other tag tools: TaggedFrog, TaggTool, Better Tags, DiviFile, Elyse, Tags for All, and some others (most of them free)).

This being said, HP is a very appealing concept, but not worth my buying a "final beta" (1.0), in its current development state, considering that chances are high that a version with even very few further development will be released beyond the 90 days mentioned above; but let the developer speak for himself:

"If you aren’t embarrassed by v1.0 you didn’t release it early enough"

(And that's not all: The developer is an expert in cutting up software into different versions of highly differentiated functionality / usefulness, e.g. at 30, 75 and 300 dollars (each plus VAT), so chances are HP will offer its eventually really useful features at some 300 bucks only (or, if you extrapolate the base price (40 vs. 30 (and thus, possibly 100 vs. 75), 400 bucks plus VAT), which is another argument for me to sit and wait, instead of prematurely buying. (And yes, for the citation above, I made a screenshot.))

Andy Brice I don't think our upgrade policy is unusual. Some other products might have a longer 'grace period' than 90 days.

We did a beta. It was tested by beta testers and professional third party testers. Quite a few improvements and some bug fixes were made. We now consider the software to be commercial quality. We haven't had a crash report since the v1 release.

Anyone who purchases v1 will get every bug fix and improvement util we release v2. If you look at our PerfectTablePlan product you will see that we have done a fair number of enhancements and fixes between major releases.
http://www.perfecttablepl.../news.html
There are no plans to move to v2 any time soon. However I recommend you make your purchasing decision on what the software does now.

>"If you aren’t embarrassed by v1.0 you didn’t release it early enough"
If you read that article you will note it explicitly says not to release poor quality software:

"If you release early, won’t you get a bad reputation? Only if you produce shoddy software that crashes all over the place. There is no excuse for that, even at version 1.0. The key is to pare down the features without sacrificing quality. Pick the smallest sub-set of features that will be useful. Then add more features at each subsequent release, based on user feedback."

The full article is at:
http://successfulsoftware...ly-enough/

We may well split Hyper Plan into Hyper Plan basic and professional at some future point, as we did with our PerfectTablePlan product. But there are no plans to do that any time soon.

H. H. @developer
just tried hyper plan and think it could become a promising planning tool
But not allowing clickable links to any files (like Michael R. has suggested:"Perhaps you might want to consider allowing to connect any type of file with an entry. So a click on this link might run the default application for this link. E.g. if it is a doc-file, it is opened by Word,..") means that the usibility is far too restricted and this could become the dealbreaker.
In case the implementation of clickable links within version 1 would be guaranteed, I still would make my decision for buying.
Another useful feature could be time tracing (like e.g. abstractspoon todolist allows) - and perhaps in a later version some more geomatric basics (choosable for each card seperately - e.g. triangle, ellpisoid, circle could be an additional visual marker helping to get a good overview.
Thank you for considering

Bob McLain I agree with those in favor of clickable links. Such basic functionality is essential in a program like HyperPlan, and the lack of it does seem to reinforce Peter's suggestion that the software is an advanced beta. I'm not sure why "getting the interface right" is a necessary prerequisite for clickable links, either.
Jan 25 2015 at 9:16am Copy Link

Andy Brice As I said above, clickable links are certainly links are certainly something we would like to add. But our policy is not to make any promises about future features. You should make your purchasing decision based on the current features.

I am not sure what you mean by time tracing. Perhaps you could post a link to an image or video. Note that Hyper Plan understands dates in various formats and can display a timeline (days, weeks, months or years) along the x and/or y axis.

You can already show coloured squares or circles based on the properties of cards. For example, to show a square coloured by card 'priority' (e.g. red=high), set 'priority' to 'show as colored square' in 'show card properties'.

Andy Brice >I'm not sure why "getting the interface right" is a necessary prerequisite for clickable links, either.

We actually started to implement this following feedback in the beta, but weren't very happy with how it turned out, so we removed it. We didn't think it was important enough to delay the v1 release for. But I am getting a strong message here that it is something people really want.So we'll certainly factor that into future plans. But, again, we make no promises about future releases.

thanks for responding. The abstractspoon todolist can be downloaded at
ttp://www.codeproject.com/Artic...to-keep-on
It´s freeware and can be runned as portable version (simmply extract zip-file)
There are several columns regarding time - e.g. "spent, due,.." and a column where one can start/stop a timer.
Additionally I´ve emailed a marked screenshot to your support adress

Andy Brice Thank you for the clarification. I don't really see this sort of time tracking functionality fitting in with our vision of the product. Also there are lots of good time tracking products already. So we are unlikely to add this feature.

Edward Smith Is this a collaborative program that can be synced with all members of a team?
Jan 26 2015 at 4:17am Copy Link
0
Andy Brice It is primarily a single user product. All the data for a plan is held in a single file so you can store that in a network folder or synch it across multiple computers (PC and Mac) using DropBox (or similar). But it doesn't support multiple users editing the same plan file. That is something we might possibly add in future.

Edward Smith This program shows a lot of promise. I like it very much. For me it is a no brainer when the deal goes live. It would be killer with the ability to link files, etc., as recommended above. I am very impressed so far.

another question / feature request after further testing:

is there a possibility to copy single or a group of cards and / or rows-columns?
(did at least not figure it out)
If not this would be (together with the link to file/folder feature) another important feature.. It quite often happens, that one has recurrent tasks - so having to create the same card again and again would be too time-consuming,just copying would be fine
thank you for considerung

Edward Smith @HH I was trying to do the same thing and I could not find a way to copy a card.

I also think there needs to be an easier way to see each color key. I found myself struggling to remember what the different colors were. I had to keep clicking on properties. Still I like the program and have not found any deal breakers yet. Even the hardware footprint policy is okay with me the way they have it written.

Andy Brice >is there a possibility to copy single or a group of cards and / or rows-columns?

Not at present. That is also on the wishlist. It should be easy enought to add an 'edit>duplicate card' feaure that asks you how many duplicates you want.

Copy and Paste is also a posibility, but it hard to know what to do in some circumstances. If they paste in some text from another app, how do we interpret that into card (or cards) properties/notes?

Note that you can read in a .csv file if you have a load of data ad don't want to retype it.

Andy Brice >I also think there needs to be an easier way to see each color key.

We added in a color key in our PerfectTablePlan sofware (v5) for this reason. Its not that hard to do. But, in all honesty, I think there are probably a lot more pressing things to do for v1.

As a workaround you could take a screenshot of the colors you have selected (in the 'colors' tab of the 'property' window) and keep that in a separate window or print it out to refer to.

Pavi Johnson For planning projects, I have been using the excellent (free) Gantt Project. However, visualization on the continuous time scale is often not intuitive, and can be prone to getting cluttered, especially with many sub-tasks. Readjusting tasks as time constraints change is also fairly cumbersome.

HyperPlan presents a good implementation of a style that lends to planning projects more intuitively in discrete blocks. It's actually the perfect tool to solve the planning issue I had been having! I am very impressed and purchased a license.

Best, /Pavi

In order to support the promising seeming hyperplan project and encourage future improvement I just placed my order.
thank you for describing the csv-workaround.Of course a simple right-click on a card or menu-edit-copy the card(s) would be more comfortable. As you can see from the comments of various user the software seems promising, but there is still a lot of work for the developers todo (listen to users request and "play" with software like abstractspoon todo list, edraw max, mindmanager in order to get a glance of what else could make hyperplan more versatile).
The hardware-activation is not a pro, but at least it´s not extremely restricted, so it should be quite ok.
That you do not promise xy...wil be done is reputable, but of course I hope that important requested features will be implemented.
Regarding the "link to file/folder/url" feature it already would be an improvement if you would make a kind of second "notes-field" where one can insert several links which than would open, when clickng on them (there may be other solutions with nicer ui, but it would perhapos be a temporary solution for making hyperplan more versatile.

Andy Brice >but there is still a lot of work for the developers todo

Yes, absolutely. It is version 1.0, so there is a lot of room for improvement.

We released now because we want future development to be guided by customer feedback.

>The hardware-activation is not a pro, but at least it´s not extremely restricted, so it should be quite ok.

It is not hardware locked and the license allows you to install it on up to 5 PCs and/or Macs (for your own use).

An editable list of hyperlinks under the 'notes' field seems like a good solution. Making the notes rich text/HTML and allowing the embedding of hyperlink is also a possibility.

umike Is there a way to re-order the card properties?

Is there a way to remove a preset values in the card properties?

Some values are either accidentally created or no longer in used. When I used that card property as one axis, I got a blank row/column.

Click on on the column/row header, go to the 'ore-defined values' tab and delete the value. The column/row should then disappear if there are no cards with that value.

>If the answer to any of the above 2 questions is no, when will you release your next version?

It is our policy not to make any promises on the content or date of future releases.

>How can I transfer the license from PC to PC? Do I unregistered at your site or through the software? I would like to remove the license from my office pc if I should resign.

The software is licensed per person. You can have it installed on up to 5 PCs and/or Macs. You don't need to tell us if you want to move it between computers. Just use the same license key.

Edward Smith The more I use this software the better I like it. The developer is very receptive to suggestions. This is a gem that I think will get better with each release. The way I am reading it, the developer has his own vision for the software but is very open to the needs of his users. That's healthy.

james Usir Purchased software, and happy with it. Easy to cut through the various tasks etc, and narrow down to priority, what, when, where to be done- and very colourful too!
I would like if it had a small clickable pop-up calendar to help with input of dates (as I seem to get them wrong too easily!)
Also, how about password protection, and maybe a read only option?
I am merely playing around with the software for now, but can see that it will be extremely useful for organizing my way of working.
Thanks to the developer and hopefully there will be further tweaks to make it even better.

Andy Brice >I would like if it had a small clickable pop-up calendar to help with input of dates (as I seem to get them wrong too easily!)

I will try to think of a way to do that without compromising the free-form nature of property values. Note that the 'Add card' window understands 'today', 'tomorrow', 'monday' etc'. So, if you have a date property 'due' you can type:

due=today

>Also, how about password protection, and maybe a read only option?

I will make a note of those suggestions.

I can see that read-only access is useful when you are accessing a plan someone else has open (also getting updates when the file has changed).

Password protection can be done via purpose written encryption packages like axcrypt (free), so I don't see that as a priority at present.

james Usir Thank you Andy
Yes, Axcrypt will fulfill the password requirement.
I am trying out the various options available in the software, and it works really well. It is easy to add and search for information. One is not overwhelmed by superfluous buttons or choices, and the colour boxes present the details in a simple friendly fashion. I see that the boxes can be dragged and dropped to different areas on the screen and all the info is updated automatically. And the filter option is very effective.
Thank you again making the software deal available.

Ela S. Really like the beautiful and clear interface for efficient task management.

Would be great if Hyperplan can be connected somehow to Outlook or Rainlendar tasks.

Are there any import/export functions foreseen in the future?
Sep 16 2015 at 4:31am Copy Link
1
Andy Brice Hyper Plan can currently import the plan data as a CSV file ('File>Open' choose '*.csv') and export it as a CSV or TXT file ('File>Export').

It can also export the cards pane in various graphical formats, including PNG and PDF.

Integration with other todo/calendar applications is a possibility. How would you expect that to work? Drag and drop a task from Outlook to create a new card in Hyper Plan? We would have to work out how to map Outlook properties to Hyper Plan properties (which can be different in every plan).

I don't think it would be practical to maintain a live link between tasks in Outlook and cards in Hyper Plan (so updating one updated the other).

Ela S. Thanks Andy for your prompt reply.

Concerning tasks export from Outlook, CSV export might be a good point (but I'm not very familiar with it). Acc to the instructions below, tasks from Outlook may be exported into a CSV file (separately from the Outlook calendar entries); fields can be selected individually:

https://kb.wisc.edu/helpd...p?id=38685

Concerning calendar entries, eg Rainlendar Pro can synchronize with Outlook via an .ics file.

A synchronization feature (or Drag+Drop) between Hyperplan and Outlook would be the greatest asset ever.
Sep 16 2015 at 11:06am Copy Link
1
Andy Brice The CSV export from Outlook should work well as a one-off operation. Keeping Outlook and Hyper Plan is sync that way wouldn't be easy though.

I will try to find some time to look into the possibility of drag and drop of tasks from Outlook into Hyper Plan.

Rot Reads Hello Andy: just the type of program I have been looking for .... as simple as it sounds .. .just take little Post It Notes, arrange them easily into columns, be able to drag&drop at will. Great for a weekly planner with additional columns.
So, I bought a license here today. Thanks for offering here.

A couple of features that I would like to see:
1) Check off cards with a Checkbox
2) Ability to stack cards

Checkboxes as a quick way to change the status on a card and possibly to file finished cards to stack/archiv without deleting them. This way the card can disappear from the board, but could be made visible easily by opening the stack.
I usually also have post it notes with a header and perhaps 3 or 4 tasks underneath, kind of like a shopping list.

Andy Brice Hi Alex

1) You can already do what you need by adding a 'completed' property with pre-defined values 'yes' and 'no' (default 'no'). When a card is done set 'completed' to 'yes' in the drop-down list. You can also set up a stored view with a filter that hides all 'completed'='yes' cards. Then you can hide all the completed cards by choosing that stored view. See also:
'Q. How do I hide completed cards without deleting them?'
http://www.hyperplan.com/faq.html

2) What do you mean by stacking? Do you mean on top of each other (on the Z axis) or vertically one below the other (on the Y axis)? If you mean the latter, you can already do that by setting 'cell layout' to 'column' in the 'appearance' section.

The one thing I feel is needed (at least I don't see it) is a Time-of-Day field type.

Could be useful for a lot of things.

Have you considered adding?

Andy Brice Hi Ronald

You can already create a 'time of day' property with pre-defined values 01:00, 02:00, 03:00 .. 23:00. See the 'weekly plan' example we ship with Hyper Plan.

I have considered having a specific 'time' and/or 'time/date' property type. But I feel Hyper Plan is more of a high level/abstract/strategic planning tool. So I am not sure if that is a direction I want to go in. Also there are lots of calendaring applications that can do this already.

I could possibly change my mind though. If you sign-up for our newsletter you will be kept up to date with any new releases:

when do you plan for the next major release (2.0) ?

I would hope that when this comes it will hold the major feature "task dependencies" as this is helpfull for shortterm planing with many tasks and specialized people involved ... especailly if they use the agile methodology in the project planning.

But the tool is already on the right track ... keep it up.

Andy Brice Hi Thomas,

As a matter of policy we never pre-announce release dates. However we released v1 in January 2015. So its fairly unlikely that v2 will be before January 2016.

Dependencies is something that might only make available in a Professional edition of the tool (possibly with other advanced features). We haven't decided yet.

>how many people can it handle?

I'm not sure if you mean:
How many people can it track?
How many people can edit a plan at the same time?
How many people does a license cover?
Something else?

Please clarify.

Javier Gil Thanks for your reply.
I meant how many people can it track, yes. Say I have a business with 200 workers, could it handle plans and projects for each one of them? (i.e. only one person would be entering the data)
Mar 14 2016 at 3:11am Copy Link
1
Andy Brice There is no hard limit on how many cards, rows or columns Hyper Plan can handle. We've tested it with 2000 cards and it was still pretty responsive. But 200 rows of cards in 1 plan might be a bit overwhelming for the user.

You could have 200 separate plan files, but that might also be a bit unwieldy.

You probably don't want to type in the contents of hundreds of cards, but you can import a .csv file with the data.

I suggest you download the free trial and try it.

Anyone who purchased Hyper Plan v1 before 10-Dec-15 can upgrade to v2 here for $16:

(anyone who purchased on or after that date should already have a free v2 key).

If you purchased v1 (through BDJ or elsewhere), you should already have an email about this. Check your spam folder.

We don't provide a synchronization mechanism. However you can:

-Store your plans in a shared folder that all the machines can see.
or

We use DropBox and it works great.

So if I understand this correctly... I can have my plan data files live in the cloud (Dropbox, Onedrive, etc), instead of on my hard drive(s)... yes?

What if I end up having HyperPlan open on both my laptop and my desktop at the same time? Will both installations be able to access and update the same plan data file?

Andy Brice >I can have my plan data files live in the cloud (Dropbox, Onedrive, etc), instead of on my hard drive(s)... yes?

Hyper Plan requires the file to be stored on your local machine. With DropBox it will be on your local machine and synchronized via the cloud.

>What if I end up having HyperPlan open on both my laptop and my desktop at the same time? Will both installations be able to access and update the same plan data file?

Yes. But in the unlikely event that you change the plan file on both machines before they are able to synchonize, you will end up with 2 versions of the plan. This is how DropBox handles conflicts.

Note that DropBox is not our software. I recommend you download their free trial.

Petr Hi Andy,
An interesting app. I have some pre-sale questions please:

Q1: Can the onscreen display be printed to a nice looking hard copy (or PDF)?
Q2: Can a nice looking graphic (PNG or JPG) be created?
Q3: Is there a way to import / export the data?
Q4: Is there a programatic (api) way of sending data to the app, generating PDF or PNG or JPG output... all driven by some kind of API or programming or script?

Thx.

Andy Brice >Q1: Can the onscreen display be printed to a nice looking hard copy (or PDF)?

Yes. It can print the 'cards' or 'charts' pane to a printer or export to PDF. Nice is obviously subjective!

A couple of customers have reported issues with printing. We are hoping to resolve that soon (until then they have to export to PDF and print the PDF). The vast majority seem to be having no problems with printing.

You can download the free trial and try it.

>Q2: Can a nice looking graphic (PNG or JPG) be created?

Yes, you can export the 'cards' and 'charts' panes to PNG or JPG.

>Q3: Is there a way to import / export the data?

The underlying data is stored in an XML file. But you can also import .csv files. See:
'opening a CSV file'
http://www.hyperplan.com/...index.html

>Q4: Is there a programatic (api) way of sending data to the app, generating PDF or PNG or JPG output... all driven by some kind of API or programming or script?

No. Not at present. But you could write a program to generate the XML files that Hyper Plan reads.

Played around some more - total by rows, columns, and in cells - very nice!

The other totals would actually be useful for balancing across X & Y.

I never thought of a "text total" (Show total for: Task), but now that I see it, it would be cool to be able to print each card. Like for the wedding, print a card to give to each participant... or one for each time period (ie, from each cell - for the Bride's family, a card labeled "Bride's Family - 12mo to Go", and for each other time period).

Michael R. It would be nice, if former customers of this product would get a discount for their upgrade too, when buying today (beyond the standard upgrade-price).

Some vendors already use this opportunity to appreciate their valued former customers this way (e.g. 010Editor).

PERHAPS BDJ COULD TRY TO PROMOTE & EMPHASIZE THIS TO THE SOFTWARE OFFERERS

It probably would be a win-win situation: Why should a former-version owner buy today, if the price is the discounted price is not cheaper than the standard-upgrade-price? But perhaps (s)he would, if it's former purchase would be appreciated, by let them have a nice opportunity-feeling through a discounted upgrade-price.

So although interested because of the nice new features, I will not buy today, because (1) because of no price-advantage relatively to the standard upgrade-Price and (2) because I do not need the new features so desperatly. A discoounted upgrade-price might me (and perhaps other users too) have decided otherwise... So, perhaps next time?

The Hyper Plan plan files are stored in XML format. Hyper Plan can also export to the following formats (try 'File>Export'):

PDF
PNG
JPG
BMP
TXT
CSV
SVG

We have tried to make Hyper Plan network friendly. See:
'Using Hyper Plan in a multiple-user/multiple-computer environment'
http://www.hyperplan.com/...index.html

And we use it ourself quite a bit in conjunction with DropBox, to sync across machines.

Currently Hyper Plan doesn't support multiple users simultaneously editing the same plan file. That would require a server. It is something we might add as an option in future, if there is enough demand.
