SoftCollector I have been waiting patiently for this one to come around - and I am glad to see it offered.

In a nutshell: There is simply nothing better out there (and at this price) when it comes to recovering data from a defective / hard to read optical media than IsoBuster. Most of its competitors have gone out of business or have passed into obscurity: Naltech (not so effective and largely unknown), CDCheck (great at what it does and to the extent it does it, but not developed any more), CDRoller (the closest rival, but somewhat inferior in my opinion), Infinadyne CD/DVD Inspector (excellent, but costs $649), etc.

That said I do have several questions I hope to receive answers to:

1. Is the best (most comprehensive) version offered at a discounted price here? Quite frankly, that is the version I am interested in, even if differences are ultimately not so great.

2. Is the software actively developed - new versions have been slow to come out over the years, and with optical media slowly, but surely leaving the battlefield, what lies ahead for IsoBuster?

Kind Regards,
SC

Bertie Brummel Is the ISO Buster license bound to a person (means I can install it on more than 1 of my private PCs) or based per computer?

BitsDuJour Admin - Nov 21 2011 at 9:55am
Peter Van Hove Hi SoftCollector,

Thanks for the kind words.

1. This is the latest and greatest version yes. In my opinion the best working version with most features.

2. Yes, certainly still actively developed but bare in mind that this is a one person thing, just me myself and I and I have had some personal setbacks AND some very positive things happen to me (such as the birth of a daughter, the building of and move to a new (bigger) house etc.)
AND because I feel that 2.8.5 is working very well and does what it is supposed to do there hasn't been much need for a new version, and one can only add so many new features.

Shoot an email to support (me) and you tend to get response the same day (so I'm certainly working).

That said, I am now stuck in a dodgy hotel with crappy internet connection after my flight back home got cancelled (I attended a conference). So response is sluggist and I HOPE I get back home some time tomorrow.

Peter Van Hove Hi Bertie,

If you buy the personal version you can install it on as many PCs as you wish PROVIDED you are the only person using those PCs.

In other words, the license is for YOU and if you use two or three or ... PCs then you can use it on those PCs.

Peter Van Hove SoftCollector,

What I forgot to mention. I'm working on the next release and I was intending to release before the end of the year but I have to be realistic and I'm now shooting for the end of Jan., beginning of Feb.

Think flash drives, media cards and the lot ;-)
Smart Projects Vendor - Nov 21 2011 at 12:34pm
SoftCollector Dear Peter,

Thank you for your prompt response.

Congratulations for your daughter! It never fails to amaze me that some of the best software titles today are the product of a team of one!

I bought Process Lasso yesterday - a top notch title at what it does - and negotiated directly with its developer - the guy is improving it, taking care of the website, the works - and most importantly: manages to keep it on top of the world.

I have kept an eye on IsoBuster for many years now (having initially read about it in a magazine) and since I was very interested in software that could get the data our of a defective disk (I have collected DVD movies for years), I tested most or all of the available titles, but I came coming back to IsoBuster.

Of course, if a CD or DVD starts giving you hard time the best thing to do is to throw it away :), but if you have to try, IsoBuster is probably your best choice.

Realistically speaking I do not often need to recover defective CDs these days, but I will buy IsoBuster nevertheless: firstly, out of respect for your work, and secondly, because its development is also part of me now, as I have known of it and followed it for so many years, that it has become part of my personal history as well.

By the way - a great idea to also include flash cards, as this seems to be the direction in which storage solutions will evolve.

Kind Regards,
SC

Derpina @ Peter Van Hove

Wow, I wish more companies would have licensing like that. I salute you for your generosity. Some would have asked for more money to be able to use it that way.

Will consider buying this, I have lots of scratched discs and would love to see if there is anything that can be saved from them.
Nov 21 2011 at 2:09pm
Lupke Brother Hi Peter,

Will the next jan/feb release will be a free update for BDJ buyers?
Or is this a minor and not a major release?
Nov 22 2011 at 5:13am
Peter Van Hove Thanks SC and Derpina.

Derpina, remember that ultimately the hardware has to be able to read the disc(s), there is no magic involved. Hardware is often the weak link. So hardware defects (scratches) are always a risk. But of course IsoBuster still remains your best bet. My best advice in such cases is also to try a few more drives because not all drives behave the same on troublesome media and some may still be able to read what your current drive cannot.

Lupke, it will be a paid upgrade. Going to the 3.x range. The huge changes to the program and of course the resulting added functionality warant a jump to the next major version range. I do have to live from this, so I need to renew a fraction of the existing customer base from time to time. But then the last time that happened was in 2006, so it's still not like other programs that do it almost yearly. There also won't be forced upgrades. If somebody wants to stick with a 2.x version then (s)he is welcome to do that forever. Existing customers will get a nice disount if they want to go to 3.x. People buying here during the BDJ deal will be lucky lucky lucky again ... because they will receive a free upgrade to the 3.x range.

Az Wiz Hi Peter,
Have been using various versions of IsoBuster over the years, so looking forward to the latest & greatist. Any idea when this will be offered? I don't always check my email everyday.

One other thing. Your comments about scratches on CDs kind of conflicts with an item listed under product "Features".
ie: "Store your precious memories on optical discs without fear of breakage or scratching."

Care to comment?
Nov 23 2011 at 11:24pm
Albert C. I have a valid license for 2.x that I bought some years ago and today I'll get this deal as it ensures me a free pass for 3.x! ;)

Just one question: is IsoBuster supposed to check CD à la CDCheck? I mean, can it tell you if a CD or DVD is good from start to end? Or even compare it to its original image file? Thanks and congrats on your daughter and great work! ^_^
Nov 24 2011 at 3:18am
Peter Van Hove Hi Az,

See earlier in this thread. I expect to release the new version in the beginning of next year. I intended to do it before the end of this year but ... time is not my side this year :)

I have to look at the features list then ? On my site ? I doubt it to be honoust ?

However, IsoBuster often DOES help in case of scratches, it's just that if the hardware ultimately can't read it, software (any software) can't do it either.
Smart Projects Vendor - Nov 24 2011 at 4:16am
Peter Van Hove Hi Albert,

You would have been able to upgrade with a discount as well, but good for you.

There are several checks available yes. Just a simple check from start to end: http://www.isobuster.com/...p?help=840 à la CDCheck I suppose (although I have to admit that I've never tested CDCheck to see what it does exactly). Afterwards any files that are listed and are located in unreadable areas will be marked with a red X.

You could also do a scan for missing files and folders. That ensures the full disc to be read as well. Again all files and folders that are then found to be unreadable will be marked with a red X. You can do several extra tests on that as well, see:
http://www.isobuster.com/...p?help=830
Also check out: http://www.isobuster.com/...p?help=900

There is no compare function to compare with image files no.
Smart Projects Vendor - Nov 24 2011 at 4:27am
Peter Van Hove AW,

Now I see what you mean with what is listed under "features". It was not written by myself but by BDJ. I appreciate their blind trust but with all things in life there is some common sense to be taken in account. You still need to take care of your material. Don't go discus throwing with your discs because you happen to have a license to IsoBuster. IsoBuster goes deep, but if you put a few pieces of disc in a drive and the drive says "duh" then software can't do better, for obvious reasons. The drive is afterall still doing the reading on the disc.
Smart Projects Vendor - Nov 24 2011 at 4:39am
SoftCollector Dear Peter,

1. If this is not too much to ask - how will the difference between the Pro (Personal) and Pro (Business) version be developed with v3 of the software (to be released soon)? I was looking at the current differences and just wondering how those will be developed in v3?

2. For everyone else who might be wondering which version to get, here is the comparison link: http://www.isobuster.com/...models.php

3. To address some of the queries above (with what I believe to be true, mind you):

3.1. CDCheck and IsoBuster are not identical. CDCheck is great for checking the readability of a CD/DVD - that is what it does and it does it quickly and reliably (but as reliably as your DVD reader/writer can provide, as Peter pointed out). IsoBuster is a complex software to recover data from a scratched optical media - to the extent to which your DVD device can access it - this is important to remember.

3.2. As far as comparing goes, the best choice would be to use the option of your DVD writing software (for example Nero), or if is a 1:1 copy - use CDCheck or any of the file/folder comparing utilities - for example ViceVersa.

I hope this helps.

Kind Regards,
SC
Nov 24 2011 at 5:12am
Peter Van Hove Dear SC,

1. The thinking remains the same. What I put in a [Business] version only, should only be interesting to professional users, not for every day users (even power users).
Businesses that don't require the special functionality are still requested to buy a [Business] license.
To be honoust I haven't given this much thought yet. At the moment I don't see anything new I should limit to [Business] users. On the other hand, showing the extents for instance still remains a [Business] feature, whether this is on CD or a USB stick. So similar functionality, but then on different media, still stays in the same category of support, if that make sense.
Smart Projects Vendor - Nov 24 2011 at 5:36am
SoftCollector Dear Peter,

This is somewhat of a difficult choice... As a rule of thumb I always buy the extended functionality as I would hate to need it and not have it at a certain point in the future. The strongest advantage of the personal version though is the license which would allow for several installations, and the lower price (not most important with me personally).

If I have to be honest, I would rather have a license with the following features (maybe you can consider this as an option for a future change of the licensing policy):

1. Have the full (extended) functionality, even if I do not need it every day.
2. Be able to install on a second/third computer, maybe paying a little extra ($10 per additional license) - the way some software vendors handle it, but not having to pay the full price two or three times.
3. At any rate - erase the differences between Personal and Business with regards to functionality. I mean, is it really necessary to have two versions? Then prospective customers always wonder what those are, look for information on the site, sometimes cannot find it, etc. Also, if the Business version costs 40-50% more, then the thinking should generally be that it also offers 40-50% more, which would be difficult to achieve with IsoBuster, as you said yourself.
4. Erase the differences between Personal and Business with regards to licensing. I, for example, have a company with only one person working in it - me. I would rather have the invoice issued in my company's name (and get 10% back in tax rebates), but otherwise take advantage of the several installations, coming with the Personal license - I will be the only one using the software anyway. There are a lot of professions like mine and in the future even more people will work like this - freelancers, from their homes. The way I understand things - you are one of these people as well :)

Kind Regards,
SC
Nov 24 2011 at 6:36am
Peter Van Hove Hi SC,

Food for thought !

But as far as tax issues go ... why not buy the personal version for yourself, yet still on your business ?
I'm sure the tax man will never find out this was a personal buy on company money.

And ... 10% ... ? You lucky b#st#rd ;)
I live in the third most expensive country in the world (tax wise). 10% is a wet dream to me.
Image what I retain from these sales. 50% discount to you, X% to BDJ, Y% to the payment processor, 35% to the government if i keep it in my business or 55% if I pay it to myself (to live from, except that on 'everything' I then pay another 21% VAT) ... not too much left there ... :(
Smart Projects Vendor - Nov 24 2011 at 6:48am
SoftCollector Peter,

I have just placed an order for the Business Pro version, The code and invoice have been received.

Good luck to you in further developing IsoBuster - I would like to see the software evolve with new media recovery and testing options (good USB flash drive recovery and testing programs can be counted on the fingers of one hand), and become even more popular and successful in the future.

Kind Regards,
SC
Nov 24 2011 at 1:36pm
B Josephs Thanks Peter and BDJ for another great deal!

I would like to point out that during installation there is an option to "suggest suitable software for unsupported file formats". Apparently, this installs a program "Smart File Advisor 1.1.1" that hooks up with Filefacts.net .
Peter - are you the developer of this program? Can I trust it the same way I trust your own IsoBuster?
I would have liked a better explanation as to that option so I know and understand what I am installing on my system...
Nov 24 2011 at 2:56pm
VLM Hi Peter,

I'm another who has waited long for a promotion such as this, and the upgrade to version 3 seals the deal for sure. Great responses throughout the day.

Just one minor point ... the order entry process works fine, except that it does not seem to allow one to order multiple licenses (that is, change the order quantity to anything other than "1"). I'm placing multiple orders, no problem, just a bit kludgy and thought you'd like to know.

Does anybody know the correct spelling of kludgy? :):)
Nov 24 2011 at 8:14pm
Michael R. Supposing I have two (or more) DVDs a certain (large) file is stored on. Unfortunately on every file is a (hardware-)reading error, but fortunately it's always at another position.

Would IsoBuster be able to combine these partially readable files to a single correct one?

E.g. on DVD1 block 1 and 2 couldn't be read. Iso Buster tries it and could remember which blocks were unable to read. On DVD2 block 3 is defect. Now IsoBuster could take readable block 1 and 2 from DVD2 and combine it with readable block 3 of DVD1 and create a file which is completely readable.

If this is not possible with v2, will it be (considered) for v3?
Nov 24 2011 at 9:07pm
Peter Van Hove Thanks SC !

Dear B Josephs,

Good point. It is something to be improved on in 3.x. A better explanation in the installer. I know the people behind it personally, which is why I decided to bundle it (on their request BUT I actually like it, I think it has added value).

Dear Michael,

IsoBuster does exactly that !!
Look into managed image files. Create an IBP/IBQ image file of the disc, put in the other DVD, load the IBP file and let IsoBuster complete the image from the second disc !
More on that here:

Smart Projects Vendor - Nov 25 2011 at 1:03am
Peter Van Hove Hi VLM,

I missed your post earlier. Just spotted it, sorry for that.

The interface is from BDJ, the ecommerce provider behind it does not have this limitation.

It's the nature of the game. When vendors are this generous the intention is to allow for one license per person, not several licenses per person. Also to avoid reselling which is definitely not allowed.
Smart Projects Vendor - Nov 25 2011 at 1:10am
Gonzo To anyone considering this app: BUY IT!
I got it (IIRC) in a previous BDJ promotion, afterusing the free version for years.
Trust me, it's worth every cent (be it BDJ or regular full price) even if you do note use many of its features.
This is a MUST HAVE for anyone working with CD(r, rw), DVD(+- r, rw) and CD/DVD Images on a regular basis.

Thanks Peter for such a great app!!!
PS: Can you recommend a good brand/model of DVD writer that does a good job at reading discs (especially those discs that have not a single scratch yet they refuse to be read - probably low quality media)
Nov 25 2011 at 5:26am
Peter Van Hove Thanks Gonzo,

As for the drive ... I can't really recommend anything no. My drives are all older ones and things move so fast, the current drives are all on different chip-sets, optical units etc. Plus bare in mind that these days drive manufacturers use diifferent sources for key components in the drives of the same make and brand. Things have matured so much that it is possible to have two indentical looking drives with different internal components. Firmware is also still important as well to be able to compare apples with apples. And even if you consider identical hardware, then you can still have drives that work on the good or bad end of the spectrum. Key is to produce drives that perform within specifications, but marginal media often falls outside the specifications, and then it's the question whether your hardware can deal with that or not. There is considerable variability possible in the optical world. A hard drive is tuned and calibrated to the hardware that houses it. With CDs and DVDs that is not possible. And I can keep going on about this ..
Smart Projects Vendor - Nov 25 2011 at 5:48am
Mike m Peter:

Is there any difference from a personal standpoint on the 2 versions. Is the business version better?

Mike
Nov 25 2011 at 8:18am
Peter Van Hove Hi Mike,

Thhe [Business] version is not better, just contains more features and is aimed at professionals.
See: http://www.isobuster.com/...models.php
Smart Projects Vendor - Nov 25 2011 at 9:27am
VLM Peter, I don't wish to resell the license, I wish to give it as a gift. :)

This works with Blu-Ray, yes?

This has nothing to do with removing encryption, correct?
Nov 25 2011 at 10:55am
Michael R. Peter, thanks for the positive answer above.

Another question/suggestion:

Because in my experience it turned out that DVDs are quite unreliable for storing datas over the years, I now copy important data to harddisks. Unfortunately copying a lot of files, e.g. pictures is sooo time consuming. So my idea was, copying the complete DVD to an ISO-file to the harddisk and extracting the files from there to the harddisk.

Unfortunately with my tools creating an ISO-file fails if the DVD has a single read-error.

Can IsoBuster help me to create an ISO file, even if the DVD is partially defect or will this be possible in the new v3? Or can you recommend a tool which is able to create an ISO-file (or another container-file), even if the DVD is partially defect and with which IsoBuster can work together...?
Nov 25 2011 at 3:36pm
Ron. "Existing customers will get a nice discount if they want to go to 3.x. People buying here during the BDJ deal will be lucky lucky lucky again"

Will this existing customer discount be equal to or better than the BDJ deal? If not, then existing customers should buy here, now, right?
Nov 25 2011 at 6:25pm
Gonzo Thanks for the quick and detailed reply.
To be honest, that's what I thought... which indeed sucks...
I have some discs which can be partially read by most drives I try them on, but then again, these are mostly notebook drives, which I'm sure are less reliable than desktop drives.
I have yet to try creating a managed image, which I read about from a link you posted here; hopefully that'll work :)
Nov 25 2011 at 6:45pm
Stefan Hauber BDJ-Policy says: 'Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free up to the next major version, for versions after that upgrades will require additional payment which will be discounted'

With the current version 2.x, I do interpret this 'will be free up to the next major version' as v3.x is free too

and

'for version after that...' that versions after version 3 (i,.e. version 4,...) will cost again, i.e. 'after that' means 'after next major version' means 'after version 3'.

So, do I misinterpret this BDJ-policy-term?
Nov 25 2011 at 7:56pm
Ron. I would interpret that as up to but not including the next major version. That's the typical policy.

Some above are expecting 3.x free with the BDJ purchase. Peter was not explicit on what lucky, lucky, lucky BDJ purchasers meant.
Nov 25 2011 at 9:17pm
Peter Van Hove VLM,
BD is supported yes ! No, no illegal things are done. The encryption is not circumvented.

Michael,
IsoBuster should be able to help yes. You can replace erronous sectors with 0 (zero) data preferably.

Ron,
I can't say for sure yet but it surely won't be a better deal than this one, that's for sure.

Gonzo,
success !!

Stefan,
You interpret wrongly. It means that all upgrades *in* the same version range are free. So when going from 2.8 to 2.9 for instance, but not when going to 3.x
That said, I promissed a free upgrade to 3.x for people buying here today (and yesterday). So from 3.0 to 3.xx.
I hope this explains it ?

I'm over my head right now ...
"Busy" is an understatement.
Smart Projects Vendor - Mar 29 at 7:04am
Peter Van Hove Hi boys and girls. I promissed a free upgrade to all those buying this BDJ offer. And I'm obviously going to honour that !

Problem, my video card blew up a few hours ago and I'm just now back in the running. Still on my laptop but working in Safe mode and looking at a blurry screen. I need to fix this before I can do some serious work again. But it's night now.

The coupons installed for your purchase is still wrong. You can try but it will give you a 30% discount, not a 100% discount. For the anxious ones ... I'm not stopping you to buy with a 30% discount but if not I have to ask to please be patient a little while longer.

Thanks for your support !!

It will bring you to a page that asks for your email address and old ID. After you click "Create Coupon", you will be brought to the store. Select the version you own. At some point, you will automatically be given a promotion item "BDJ 100% PROFESSIONAL" that credits you the amount of your selected version for a zero balance (before the cost of whatever else you select). Upon concluding this "purchase", you will see a screen with your new ID & Key and will also receive several emails, one of which contains your new ID & Key.
