Line Reader

A Handy Reading Aid for the 21st Century

We've all spent time reading through long documents and passages in textbooks and periodicals, whether it's for work or when performing research for a term paper. Back in the day, you could use a ruler or piece of paper to guide your eyes while you read - today, most of the documents that we read are in electronic format on a computer screen, and the ruler just keeps falling off of my monitor!

Line Reader is your helpful reading ruler for a new generation. With Line Reader, your mouse cursor is magically transformed into a handy reading aid, a line that moves with your mouse to help you keep track of your spot in any long online document or webpage! Say goodbye to headaches and vertigo caused by constantly adjusting your focus to maintain your spot on your monitor! Plus, you have complete control over the size, width, and color of your reading line.

Ease of use, thy name is Line Reader.

Line Reader doesn't just help you read documents line-by-line. The app also helps you to keep track of entire paragraphs, such as those found in assembly steps and recipes. Just one click will flip your reading line from horizontal to vertical - just move the line from one paragraph to the next as you complete each step!

With helpful bonus features such as a Magnifier Window, Measurement Window, Highlighter tool, Side Lines, Screen Shapes and a Tag Along Window that holds important information such as appointments, memos, or pictures, you'll be amazed at the utility and effectiveness of Line Reader!

. zyria So this has to be used in a browser window only and it cannot be used with a PDF file? I have a number of subscriptions that re issued in PDF format for which this would be useful.
Dec 9 2011 at 5:12am
Nico Westerdale Zyria, No not at all! I can be used with any program, not just a browser. It overlays any application so PDFs, Word docs and graphics apps are all compatible.

HJ B The instructions are somewhat confusing. Are all of the marking capabilities only temporary? Can a pdf document be highlighted useing this application, and the highlights be saved?

I tried the program in demo mode. Some of the functions seemed to work, such as the geometric objects, but the hilighting was no different that the usual windows highlighting. I suspect something is preventing that feature from being activated on my computer.
Dec 10 2011 at 1:03am
Constantin Florea @ HJ B: In trial mode, the highlighting functionality is indeed limited as follows:
- the number of group marks is limited to two
- the number of marks in a group is limited to 15
Because of this trial mode limitation, when you try to mark anything, the mark trail will be quite short.

After the application is unlocked there is virtually no limitation on the highlighter functionality (or any other functionality): the number of mark groups can be set as high as 1000 which is more than anyone would use and the number of marks inside a group is unlimited.

You can mark anything on your screen (PDF documents, web sites, applications, you name it) because the highlighter marks stay on top of everything else. There are cases when you try to mark something and when you click to mark it, a menu activates or a window is activated or something similar happens which changes the state of your screen. To help you prevent this undesired functionality you can enter "Eat Clicks" mode and start creating the marks. In "Eat Clicks" mode you can click anywhere on your screen and the underlying windows won't register any clicks but the marks will be created.

After you've created the marks in "Eat Clicks" mode, you can save them in two ways:
- either save only the marks created by the highlighter (withough the background)
or
- you can save the marks alongisde the background image

The saving described above can be accessed only in "Eat Clicks" mode (right click your mouse to access the context menu containing the saving options).

The highlighter has three modes:
- to show marks when the mouse is moved (not clicked)
- to show marks when the mouse is clicked and dragged. Each click and dragg (until you released the mouse cursor) is considered a mark group
- to show marks when the mouse is moved AND when a custom defined key combination is pressed (see settings section to define the key combination, default is CTRL + SHIFT + K).

If there's anything else, please let us know.

Goran Janevski Does this program work on Windows 7 64-bit?
Dec 10 2011 at 5:49am
Constantin Florea @Goran Yes it does.

The detailed platforms are: Windows XP, Vista (both 32 and 64 bit) and Windows 7 (both 32 and 64 bit). In order to run the application you need to have the .Net Framework installed on your computer (version 2.0 at least).
Bits du Jour Admin - Dec 10 2011 at 5:50am
HJ B I have System 7 64 ultimate.

The highlighting feature does not appear to work for me at all, either on pdf or html. The shapes work, but they appear on a top layer that remains where it is when the document is scrolled, i.e, it does not scroll with the rest of the document and is not fixed to a point in the document. At the moment, I have a white geometric shape that is about a half inch square that has implanted itself on my desktop and remains there coming through to whatever application, such as my browser, at the moment, is active.

It would be helpful if you described in greater detail what the objective of each of the functions is. Even in your most recent explanation, what you are saying is unclear. For example, you say: "either save only the marks created by the highlighter (without the background) " Why would one want to save only the marks? Or do you mean that only the marked text will be saved?
Dec 10 2011 at 6:17am
Constantin Florea @ HJ B: The highlighter becomes active only if the picture above the "Highlight" top menu text is the red one (the red paw). This means that the highlighter is active. If the picture above the "Highlight" top menu text is green then the highlighter is inactive. After you made sure that the highlighter is active you need to switch to the "Highlighter" tab and to make a quick test you need to press the second radio button called ("Highlighter Marks on when mouse is clicked") and click and drag your mouse several times. When you click and drag, a small trail will be shown (in trial mode only two short trails will be visible). Please let me know if you can create those trails.

Regarding possibility of saving only the marks or the marks and the background image: it is true that probably 98% of cases someone will need to save the marks and the background but for flexibility purposes we thought of allowing saving only the marks (besides, this functionality of saving only the marks was already there so we only had to make it available through a menu).

At the moment the only use I can think where someone would need to save only the marks would be the case where a small drawing would be needed. To create the drawing you'd need to enter "Eat Clicks" mode, make your drawing, right click anywhere and choose to save only the marks. The advantage would be that the marks have opacity and the image would have transparency if saved as a PNG.

Regarding the shape functionality: the shapes are supposed to remain on top whatever you do and this is because if they would not remain on top then when you would try to create a small scene you would realize that some of your shapes would go behind the opened windows and you'd need to minimize those windows to see those shapes again. There are other reasons as well. Since the shapes are meant to stay on top no
matter what (even when you press Windows Key + D) this means that you can easily concentrate on creating your scene.

Here is a small summary of the objectives of each Line Reader functionality:
- the line itself can be used to remember your position while reading long documents. You can use it in conjunction with the
Helper line to do this. See both 'Line Reader' and 'Helper Line' tabs.
- the side lines are meant to slide alongside the screen edges and follow your mouse cursor. They are meant to help even more realize where your mouse cursor is.
- the 'Extra Features' functionality can be used in conjunction with the main line (when it is active) and refer to the position of the line relative to the mouse cursors and whether the line filters the underlying image or not. You can even select a few image filters and a magnification factor for the image presented inside the line.
- the highlighter gives the possibility to highlight anything on your screen or make small drawings when in "Eat Clicks" mode. You
can change the shape, color, opacity and size of the highlighter marks.
- the 'Tag Along' section gives you the possibility to have the following items (only one at a time) follow your mouse cursor: an image, a simple text or a reminder.
- the 'Shapes' section allows you to use existing or custom defined shapes (which you can create yourself) to help with 3D modeling work: where you would set the background image of a shape, set that shape's opacity, set it as being click-through-able and have it hover your working application. You can also use this section to create small colored scenes to express an idea.

The profiles give you the possibility to save the Line Reader run-time settings under a profile name which you can simply activate later to have the application behave in a predefined manner. You can have as many profiles as you want to.

HJ B Thanks for the reply. It does not work for me and I have uninstalled it. Even if it did work, it seems to be too cumbersome to be worth the trouble. The program appeared to be corrupting my operating system and required a reboot. Netframework also gave me a message that the program is incompatible. I could go on, but, in sum, this program seems to need a good deal more work before it is issued in beta.
Dec 10 2011 at 7:16am
Goran Janevski The way I thought this software would/should work is like this:

I move the cursor on the line I want to read - anywhere in the line - and the software is smart enough to underline the entire line, and by that i mean the software finds the bottom of the line, and underlines it. I move the cursor down a bit to the next line, that line is now underlined.

If trying to fast read, this is what I need.

If it did that, I'd buy it in a nanosecond.

But as it is, I don't see the point.

Hope this helps
Dec 10 2011 at 8:03am
bvssunnydale I purchased this a year or two ago and then sent multiple e-mails to the maker and never got a response. This would be expensive (and still useless) even if it were free and the support is non-existent. [and STILL when is Bitsdujour going to default to NOT e-mailing updates that fill up your inbox with crap.. - sorry this is totally dumb and aggrevating..]
Dec 10 2011 at 8:47am
peter hayes G'Day,

I concur with Goran Janevski, underlining the entire line would be more useful when it comes to reading on screen, not really my favourite pastime, but a necessity all the same.
Also when trying the demo the line detaches itself from the cursor and gets stuck on screen, while the cursor freely continues to move, thr whole application needs to be restarted to reset the cursor to line functionality.
Win 7 Pro 32bit sp1 all updates up -to -date.
Dec 10 2011 at 9:00am
Nico Westerdale Bvssunnydale, I've personally addressed your issue twice already, simply show the past comments and you can see my responses. I will disable email replies for you on this thread as they seem only to enrage you.
Bits du Jour Admin - Dec 10 2011 at 9:25am
Constantin Florea @Goran and Peter regarding the text line underlining functionality: I understand your point but I also realize that this requires a bit more looking into how this functionality can be developed (if it should do everything itself just by activating it). Thanks for the suggestion. I've written it down and we'll have to see if and how this can be integrated.

@Peter did the issue with the cursor moving freely happen again after the first time you've restarted the application?
Bits du Jour Admin - Dec 10 2011 at 9:58am
peter hayes @Constantin,

Has happened 5 times so far and on the fifth time i noticed that it seems to happen when , after enabling sidelines, then disabling sidelines, then the cursor and line parts ways.

Had task manager open and when it refreshes the process screen and i am moving the line it and the cursor become sluggish and then they part ways again (6th time).

There does not seem to be a defining element here, it seems to be random causes and times, sometimes after 1 minute and sometimes longer, also seems to happen with fast movements of the line/cursor on the screen.
Dec 10 2011 at 10:31am
Goran Janevski Now if you want to be able to double the price of your program, imagine this value - this builds on my previous suggestion:

Rather than me moving the cursor, the program itself starts at the beginning of the page, and moves down line-by-line at some default speed, and forces me to keep up reading with it. I cannot begin to describe to you how useful this would be for people with ADHD (a lot of people).

I can increase or decrease the speed with which it changes lines both interactively by pressing "s" for slower or "f" for faster, or "p" for pause - or in your customization window (of course if I do it interactively, he should remember my speed).

And maybe there is a key I press (like "b" for begin) after I go to the next page of the pdf, to tell the program to start underlining lines from the top of the page.

Now that would be a super duper deluxe useful program! (and I get a special discount for all this free advice :-) )

Regards,
Goran
Dec 10 2011 at 11:39am
Constantin Florea @peter: thanks for the detailed behavior you experienced. We will need to investigate this further.
Bits du Jour Admin - Dec 10 2011 at 12:03pm
Constantin Florea @Goran, Thanks for your suggestion.

What you describe would be very easy (and relatively fast) to implement if you would agree setting the length and height of the text line so that Line Reader would not have to calculate this for every text line it goes across. This is because it would take some calculating power and I believe complex logic to determine where the text line starts and where it ends both horizontally and vertically. If Line Reader would know this beforehand then the rest of the functionality you describe is very simple to implement.

This extra functionality won't scroll the document and will not flip the page if that's the case at least in the first implementation. To do the scrolling or flipping automatically, we'd need to look into how to do this, and if it is possible, perhaps by sending certain keys - defined by the user - to the program showing the document.

Future updates for Line Reader are free of charge so if you buy now then you're all set for any future improvements.

Please let me know what you think about setting up the width and height of document text line both vertically or horizontally so Line Reader would know about these beforehand.
Bits du Jour Admin - Dec 10 2011 at 12:24pm
peter hayes @Constantin,

I have purchased a licence and look forward to any fixes for the above issues, i can live with these for the moment, i was also wondering about some right click shell integration for starting and stopping the line functions, perhaps it could link to starting/stopping a profile, rather than having to remember hot key sequences??, just a thought.
Dec 10 2011 at 2:23pm
Constantin Florea @peter: we will have to look into the code to investigate this issue further. Also, thanks for the shell integration suggestion.
