The Conversation

Email Me Updates
Fred X I only discover this, today's, software, today, so I don't have enough time left to rightfully consider - why there ain't any comments here? Too special?

Well, then, let me be bring in the first one:

1 )

Final Draft is the "industry standard", meaning, studios and producers, etc., that accept your script, only accept it in FD format.

So that was for FD7... in FD8, they changed the format from theirs to some XML, where I don't know if that's real standard or with some idiosyncrasies of their own.

If their XML is standard XML, so what about the "industry standard" now? Perhaps any other screenwriting program can deliver exactly that format, so that your screenplay, written in MO3 will indeed be accepted, even when not written in FD(8)? But then, is MO3 able to deliver that standard format? (Or is there an easy (and perhaps free) way to go by an intermediate / a transponding format?) And if FD's XML is not XML at 100 p.c. - same question: Is MO3 able to deliver (i.e. by some tricks / intermediators perhaps) able to deliver that "industry standard"?

Or then, is the "industry standard" compulsory, all other considerations notwithstanding, since you'll get back your script, with "their" comments in it, and THAT format then will not IMPORT into any other thing than FD(8)?!

2 )

I tried FD(7 and 8), and I must say that its outlining capabilities is underwhelming; of course, they added those goodies because of people's need for them, not because they love 'em, and that shows.

On the other hand, just writing down is really fluent in FD: It's a way not of constructing things, but of let'em flow, and that part of FD is a real pleasure; on Amazon, people say that MO3's capabilities of "let it flow" ain't that extraordinary.

First encounter of MO's GUI is not that joyous, cannot say it's really beautiful, and for writing, that's important; especially, the "Characters" GUI is awful in my opinion.

"FeelFactor" is an ugly name in my opinion, and that's important since you have that tab before your eyes every minute and every second, but I very much appreciate the concept, I think it's highly valuable and of utmost importance, at least by its idea - for its realization, cannot say since I've got no script to load into it; I tried to load "Die Hard" but was only informed that I'm working with a trial version with crippled features; since I cannot put down my own script in 3 hours' time, I cannot try those functions, and perhaps I'll get more crippled-version messages anyway - that's not a good idea, and that's for sure...

I even bought, here, MyInfo 5 Professional, judging from a crippled trial version's LIES, i.e. I thought, from the help file, that the Prof. version could do some things explained in the (non-crippled) help file, and then it was, "unfortunately the prof. version does NOT contain those function, but we didn't update the help file accordingly", and 6 months afterwards, it was, "we don't intend to do something about it", and today, almost 12 months afterwards and a new (paid) version later, no changes.

Thus, software makers are well advised to NOT cripple their trial versions, except for the 30 (or 21, or whatever) days limit.

I just see that indeed there is a sample script, "Once Bitten" available, and indeed, the FeelFactor part could be enhanced, same for Step Cards, and so on.

3 )

On Amazon, I thus read comments on FD, on MO3... and of Dramatica... where that last program seems to be highly recommendable but not a thorough replacement either for FD or for MO. Thus, I'm wondering if Dramatica and MO can "play together" in any way, besides that from a certain point of your script's life, MO HAS to be able to export into the industry standard format, whatever that standard format currently might be.

4 )

Trying out the scriptwriting, it's as good as FD's, or almost. In fact, there is no real help file - there's a downloadable fdp manual, which is another thing -, and the "first steps" or "getting started" does "explain everything" and nothing, and certainly not the very first steps of Return, Double Return, and Tab - but IF you presuppose those keys to have a special function, it's rather easy to put some first lines on screen...

Here again, it's the GUI that bothers me, and that bothers me deeply, it's really ugly, no elegance whatsoever. Thus, I tried the options, for better "skins" or for being able to hide some things at least: no way(s).

Thus, my verdict: Rehaul the GUI (see some Mac programs with this respect, Storyist being an outstanding example, and even FD is more more pleasing to the eye than MO), and do some little brushings on top of that, and MO will be a spledid thing IF there is industry standard... which indeed there doesn't seem to be at this point, and that's a real deal breaker.

I'm giving my real mail address, in case you seek my advice any further.

MO's not pleasing to the eye is, with the lack of the industry standard in exporting, the reason for the (relative) lack of response here, the program being much better in its functionality than in its appearance, but as we all know, it's the eye, and the eye first, that opens their purses...

James Marston Hi Fred,

Thanks for your feedback on Movie Outline.

Firstly let me address the issue you raise about Final Draft being the "industry standard". This simply means that many production companies and studios use the software during the pre-production and production phase of the movie-making process, it doesn't mean that it is the only software that can produce a professional screenplay to Hollywood standard guidelines, or indeed that agents and producers will only read scripts written using Final Draft.

In fact, agents and producers typically only read hard copies (printed) or PDFs which can be created by Movie Outline. Movie Outline also imports and exports to Final Draft 8's new XML format and Scheduling format which means scripts written using Movie Outline can be shared with users of other screenwriting and production software.

I am sorry you do not like the interface of the software but the vast majority of our users find it a very intuitive and fresh design and from our perspective the tabbed interface was the best way to allow users to interact with the many features the software has to offer. Users also seem to find that the step-based writing method (which you can use or not) also helps with their creative flow.

With regard to the demo version feature restrictions, only the outline and analysis of "Die Hard" can be viewed via the Reference Panel, FeelFactor Panel and PowerView -- the other eleven breakdowns of produced movies included in the software are viewable once the demo version is unlocked with a purchased serial number. Aside from a few other demo limitations, the demo and full version are exactly the same.

We took a great deal of time to write a comprehensive User Guide which can be viewed via HelpMovie Outline Help. This contains a lot of information about the process of screenwriting as well as technical feature explanations so I recommend you take a look.

Good luck with your writing!
