Mike G From what I can see, once a customer gets beyond 30 days after purchasing Nitro PDF there is no way to communicate with anyone at Nitro PDF Software without paying $10.99 per query--not even for a pre-sales question. Obviously no one is going to pay to ask a sales question, so I'll ask here:

(1) Major upgrades: If a customer purchases Nitro PDF for example on Nov. 26 and a major version upgrade is released a month later or anytime during the next 12 months, will they have to pay to get the upgrade?

(2) Upgrade Assurance: "...receive all updates free of charge for one year". Does Upgrade Assurance extend the initial year of minor updates that come with a purchase or does it overlap/run concurrently?

(3) Upgrade Assurance does not guarantee the next major upgrade, so is it possible someone could purchase Upgrade Assurance and have it expire with no major version upgrades having been released during the one year it covers?

disenchanted Maybe I am missing the link on the vendor's website, but I cannot seem to find any Nitro PDF "features comparison" chart.

I wanted to know what "extra" features come in the OCR version vs. the regular Nitro?

A competitor features comparison for both regular Nitro and Nitro OCR would be nice to see also.

I currently own 2 retail box copies of Nitro PDF. V5 and V6.

I'm not a power user of PDF software, but Nitro works fine for the times I need to create a PDF and/or convert a pdf to another format.

I am gradually switching my PCs over to Nitro, from Nuance's PDF Converter Pro.

(Nuance's licensing activation/verification process at windows startup is a real PITA.
Nuance's activation process would make anyone long for the good(??) old days days of using a "LPT port hardware dongle" to verify a person's license.
I got locked out on numerous occasions with nuance pdf products, each time requiring Nuance tech support to clear/reset my license number. Everytime it happened I was without a PDF creator for one or more days).

Actually, it is specifically the OCR functionality that differentiates this title from Nitro PDF Professional (non-OCR). The features on the following product page are only available in the OCR version:

(1) Minor releases are issued free to customers who own the same major version. Major releases are issued free to customers who purchased their license within the prior 60 days.

(2) Upgrade Assurance covers major and minor updates free of charge for one-year after purchase

(3) yes, I suppose it's possible. It's similar to buying "damage protection" for a cell phone, but never breaking it :-)

Mike G Jessie, thanks for the info. So upgrade "assurance" is more like upgrade insurance and you have to keep buying it every 12 months or risk not being covered when a major uh, upgrade happens. Of course customers would never be aware when or if that might happen in any given year, but waiting a year after a major upgrade might be a relatively safe risk.

I think I get the picture. Also remember folks, there is a complete lockdown on any form of unpaid communication with Nitro PDF after 30 days and no user forum. This may be tough for home users on a budget, so try to get all your questions answered up front.

There's a point where enough is enough, no matter how nice the program might be, esp at this price point.

Also ... speaking of price ... we have to remember that when the policy states no discounts on upgrades, that that means paying full price for the next full version, which won't be cheap.

Tazzie, et al: I think this license policy statement is misleading. I'm in the NitroPDF.com store now. It says Nitro PDF Pro 6 OCR is $119.99 new and $59.99 for upgrade from version 5. So maybe what they mean is "upgrade price cannot be combined with other discounts". Hopefully there will be an official clarification.

I agree this is vastly more affordable than Acrobat, but I've never evaluated Acrobat to see if the comparison is really apples to apples.

My peeve is--with no support forum, Nitro PDF support policy is not practical for home users who typically can't afford $10.99 per query after the first 30 days.

Likewise (my second peeve), it's difficult for home users to justify $25 a year for upgrade "assurance" when in fact several years could pass with no major upgrade. Three years of "assurance" and you've already exceeded what an upgrade would cost. A more honest "assurance" would be to charge $25 once and assure customers that anytime in the future--even if we have to wait several years, we will get the next major upgrade.

Nice product overall, but in these areas, yes Nitro we do get the picture and hope someday you'll make it a little more aesthetic for home users!

Michael R. A main usage for me to buy an additional PDF-Tool would be if I would be to be able to rearrange 'blocks', i.e.
(i) to define a block, which in the most easiest form would be a rectangle; better would be a sum of rectangles
(ii) to move it to another place

Another feature would be to add/remove empty vertical space

E.g. when printing I often use priPrinter together with a PDF-driver, so the output is a PDF-File. PriPrinter allows to cut out some blocks, you don't want to be printed. So the resulting PDF-file often has some ugly gaps inside the pages. So I would be happy to fill the vertical space with the following content. Of course this would have influence to the following pages too.

So, is this possible with your program?

Randy Martin I bought this. It didn't work. I NEVER validated the license (it remained as a trial, although I HAD spent the money). I was going to use it for a client and took a flyer on buying it before I could test it. Consequently, the client backed out of doing the project. I wrote all this to Nitro. I got back a link to their refund policy and the words "Thanks!" Nothing more. No personal response of any sort. The policy, by the way, says they will only refund if there's a technical problem THEY CAN PROVE. I am awaiting another respons. But, I just thought you all should know this. Oh, and you can't get to the request page until you sign up for password-activation. And still nothing personal. I have spent many hundreds of dollard on Bits, and this is the FIRST and ONLY company to treat me badly. I have NEVER before asked for a refund, either. I'm taking a chance writing this now without hearing a response from Nitro but I'll let you know, one way or the other, how they treat me.

Work for Adobe? Wait you returned it because your client backed out? That means that you got your refund even though you weren't entitled to it by the Nitro return policy. Don't know why you are complaining and criticizing Nitro, it seems like a pretty good outcome for you in the end.

I used my real name.

Second. I do not work for Adobe.

Third. My emails were about a product that did not work and my difficulties getting a refund for it.

Fourth. Your email was a personal attack on me, my character, and my intentions. No where did you say anything akin to, "I bought Nitro PDF Professional OCR and it worked just fine for me." Putting your personal opinion next to your name is appropriate. Casting aspersions as to a hidden agenda, is not. I'm not sure why you were compelled to attack me. My reasons for saying what I did were to let other buyers know about my interactions with Nitro and Cleverbridge. Your reasons were not connected to either of those companies, the product in questions, or the process that followed.

Fifth. Now that you bring up Adobe, I feel I can tell you (and all the world reading this) what ACTUALLY happened. When I tried to generate keystroked type from a PDF using Nitro OCR and it didn't work, my client said, "We don't want to buy this. We'll use ADOBE ACROBAT and see if we can make that work." Which they did the following day. In the meantime, I had already begun the process of trying to get a refund for a product witch didn't do what it said it would and which I had NOT activated. It was knowedge about that process s that I thought would be of value
to Bits customers.

Sixth. Life isn't always about outcomes. Especially when you're a business. It's about process. Nitro's process was poor. The communication from their representate was abrupt and uninformative. It wasn't until I asked him to reply in complete sentences that I got the information I asked for.

Seventh. I have fulfilled my duty of detailing my experiences for BIts customers to read and use in their decisions with Nitro and Cleverbridge. I detailed honestly all that occurred in this process.

Eighth. I do not like having aspersions cast on me, my character, and my intentions. And I certainly do not respect anything from someone who will not identify themselves as the author of such an attack.

Ninth. To those of you reading all of this, I apologize for taking your time. To Nitro, I have no ill wishes for you. I hope your product works everyone who buys it.
