Franck Waserman I'm interested by Nitro, but the licensing policy is all but clear.
At BDJ, it is stated that NP7 is licensed on the "per-user" scheme. Out of that I understand that I can use NP7 on all my computers.

From the vender website, I found out that NP7 requires online activation with hardware footprint.
It is clearly stated that there is a deactivation process, to allow transfer to another computer. That is not really what one can call a "per-user" license.

The vendor policy is quite ununderstandable. I hope the vendor will answer this question posted some hours ago in the faq. A registered user, who can no longer access one of his computer can't install NP7 in his new computer. A "per-user" license, really ?

http://community.nitropdf..._computers

I might consider buying, but not if this affair is not stated out.

disenchanted I previously used PDF Converter pro by Nuance, but their license
detection that launched at EVERY LOG-IN was a major PITA.
(even prevented me from reloading windows XP a few times).

I switched over every one of my 4 PC's to NITRO PDF, as funding allowed. I have the regular NITRO Version 6 on each PC
(non OCR edition).

I have been quite happy with the program, which I have running on 3 different windows versions: vista ultimate, XP home and Windows 7 ultimate.

One time I had an installation problem, but the NITRO tech support was prompt to help resolve the issue.

Looking forward to the upcoming offering.

You'll be interested to know that there is no longer an OCR version of Nitro PDF. The two versions have been merged, now there is only Nitro Pro 7 :)

HJ B When this is offered, at least five things ought be made clear:

1. What installation rights does a user have?

2. Is its security any better than that of Adobe -- for which there are a number of programs that can remove security;

3.What functionality does it have that Adobe does not have?

4. What functionality does Adobe have that Nitro does not have?

5.Does it provide a more efficient means to correct OCR errors than does Adobe?

6. What upgrade rights does a user have?

Companies that offer a pdf product, but that does not address these issues are wasting the time of a lot of people. It is not an acceptable answer to say that Adobe is much more expensive. People have a right to know what they are buying.

_*_ I do not see what the DRM is for this program. I read above it is online activation with hardware footprint, but it would be nice to have it listed and/or stated officially.

Is it limited installs as well?

I understood this is the type of information that is to be listed in the "Policy" tab. Will Bits users still see this as the site moves forward?

Thanks

Jan-Christoph Ihrens I'll probably buy the program - I tested version 6 some time ago and really liked what I saw. One thing annoyed me when I installed version 7, though: Nitro Pro made itself the default PDF viewer without asking me. I really hate this habit that seems to be rather widespread among software developers. No, I don't think Nitro Pro is the best PDF *viewer* - that's not what I'll use it for -, so I'd rather stick with my old one. Now I have to manually revert this.

Please don't waste people's time and change this behavior of the installer, please!

Sorry for any confusion!

Curt Henning de Thurah @Jan-Christoph Ihrens: No, Nitro did NOT make its viewer the default viewer without first asking you! You clicked OK without reading! (I have Nitro 6 OCR and 7 Pro). But, yes; their reader is too slow; I use PDF-XChange Viewer Pro ;-) Nitro 7 Pro at 40% off is a fine deal.

Jan-Christoph Ihrens Hm, I can't test it at the moment without deinstalling Nitro Pro. Normally I'm quite attentive when installing software (very often there are preselected options which I don't want to be active), but if I overlooked the option, I apologize for my remark.

Gunderic Hagen I have been bombarded with nitro 7 offers for some time which I deemed overpriced. This one at BdJ is the lowest price I've seen.

I already have a software to manipulate Pdfs for a fraction of what Nitro costs, discount and all. HOWEVER, Nitro has at least 3 very desirable features missing in the software i have, namely, the possibility of designing and creating forms, a supposedly good OCR and the security aspects. I am inclined now to buy it, provided I get clear answer to the following:

I am the only user. Can i install it also in my laptop? If one is stolen, the HD crashes or I buy a new computer, can I get a no hassle download to the new computer?
Thanks for a timely reply!

Gunderic Hagen @Nico, I didn't find any "policy" section" on Nitro's website. Only answers to common questions where it is not crystal clear. http://www.nitropdf.com/s...fault.aspx
Or is there indeed a "POLICY" section??

Move licence from one computer to another: It reads:
_________________________________________
You can, but first you need to de-activate your license by following these simple steps:

Open Nitro Pro
Locate the Help ribbon, and in the Product group, click About
Click Activation
On the Deactivate Nitro Pro dialog, click Deactivate
______________________________________________

it would seem that if you have it on your PC but need to use it with your laptop, you need to de activate your PC license. Do you have to do this first on your PC and then on your laptop? Or can you do it all in whichever you are using?

Many applications allow you to download it on any PC/laptop you may have AS LONG as you are using it on one ONLY at any time, which seems reasonable. This becomes something very easy...Is this what is meant by NITRO?

And if your laptop/PC is stolen/ How do you do the de activation thing, if this needs to be done in the stolen computer?

It would be good to have a clear cut answer from the guys at Nitro...

Barcode Nut Under the Policy Tab on Bitsdujour for the software:

"...Nitro Pro 7 is licensed per computer, so if you want to install Nitro Pro 7 on multiple computers you will have to purchase multiple licenses.
Nitro Pro 7 may be installed and used on a single computer and a laptop.
Nitro Pro 7 may not be used at the same time on multiple computers."

The first and third paragraph says I need to buy two licenses to run on my desktop and laptop. The middle paragraph with the 3rd paragraph says I can install on laptop AND desktop and I can only run one copy at a time. I am still confused.

Nico Westerdale Ok everyone, we're referring to the Policy tab on the right side of this page on BitsDuJour.com. That's where you can find out this type of info.

Brent, please read the policy carefully, it actually does make sense.

The second paragraph is an exception to the first, it's licensed per-computer, however you can install it on an additional laptop at no extra charge.

The third paragraph is about whether you can use the software (not install the software) on the desktop and the laptop at the exact same time - and you can't.

I hope this is clear, it's hard to get this wording right!

HJ B @Nico
I disagree with your contention about a careful reading. If it were as clear as you say, you would not have to interpret it for us. Even your interpretation is not clear.

When you say it "can't" be used at the same time on your desk top and your lap top, does that mean the software prevents it or does it mean that you can do it, but you are not supposed to do it?

Regardless of which meaning the words have, the policy is not a good one. Adobe permits installation and use on two machines. So does Microsoft. People with a laptop and a desktop need flexibility in how they use their equipment, without having to go through time wasting and project risking procedures of shutting down a program on one, to use it on the other.

Also, what if the only computers you have are two laptops -- one that stays on a desk and one that you travel with. Is it ok to install the program on both? Your language "on an additional laptop" sounds like it is. The policy language sounds like it is not.

It seems to me that a flat two-computer policy comports with the circumstances of many people and is preferable to the somewhat twisted language used in the policy.

Gunderic Hagen @NICO. You write:

" The third paragraph is about whether you can use the software (not install the software) on the desktop and the laptop at the exact same time - and you can't."

But if you cannot have it installed in the two computers, how are you going to use it in the one where it is not installed? I assume you mean NOT USE IT at the same time, but it MUST be installed on both computers. Right?
Dec 30 2011 at 7:00am Copy Link

Jan-Christoph Ihrens What Nico said is correct. The phrase in brackets just says that this paragraph only concerns how the software is used, not its installation.

The installation of the software is no "must", it *can* be installed twice. ;)

Jan-Christoph Ihrens @HJ B: "Also, what if the only computers you have are two laptops -- one that stays on a desk and one that you travel with."

Come on - if it is allowed on a desktop computer and a laptop, and you have a laptop on your desk instead of a desktop computer - do you really think there's a single company on earth that will sue you for that? There would be no hope of successfully doing so.
Dec 30 2011 at 7:24am Copy Link
0
HJ B @Jan-Christoph Ihrens

The issue is not whether they will sue. The issue is what they say you are authorized to do. If it is ok to install on two computers, regardless of whether they are laptops or tabletops, they that language ought be used. The language that is used appears to have an intent to restrain use.

Nitro allows you to install and activate it on two computers. Laptop and Desktop was just an example. It can be 2 laptops, or 2 desktops or one of each.
If activation is tried on another computer, it will receive an error and not allow it to be activated until one of the previous activations are cleared.

wiseolowl -- I purchased Nitro on BJD about a year ago. Took me a long time to find out too, but you are allowed to install on one desktop and one laptop. That's what I have been doing with Nitro's blessing.

Also my registered Nitro fell over and stopped working when I added my removable HDD to create my image files. That was fixed by providing a different version that didn't stop working.

Their backup service is good depending on who the operator is that takes the problem. Most have been excellent. In the end they will bend over backwards to solve your problems even phoning you to discuss the matter if the necessity arises. Not many do that. They have offices in Australia and the US that I know of.

Nitro uses the Foxit engine. So I guess that says considerable about the value of Foxit. Well V6 did use it not sure about V7. I would assume 7 is simply built on 6.

Franck W. I bought yesterday because I think the software is really great. That said, I was a little concerned with this important reactivation problem (in case of impossibility of deactivating).

I wrote some days ago a pre-sale inquiry to them using the form at http://www.nitropdf.com/s...grade.aspx
Up to this point, my "pre-sale" inquiry remains unanswered.

Yestarday, taking profit of their generous 30 days "complimentary" support, I wrote another message asking the very same question.
This time I got an answer... Maybe some of you are waiting this "pre-sale" answer, so I feel free to copy/paste here.

Hi Frank,
Sorry for the confusion. When you don't have access to your system to deactivate the Nitro software, just go to the following support page : http://www.nitropdf.com/s...grade.aspx
This will let you submit a support page and we will clear the activation for you.
Please let m know if there are further questions.
Best Regards,

Hum... given that I never got an answer from my pre-sale inquiry posted from this very same webform, I guess we'll just have to blindly trust them when they say they sort any activation problems out.

That said, I got Nitro 5 for free some time ago in a special, and their products are really (really) excellent.

c gould To whom it may concern/ for what it's worth: I used Nitro product for trial period, liked it, considered buying but stopped -- due to license restrictions. I go back and forth between homes on east/west coast (desktops) with laptop too, thus would have needed two or three licenses for a few functions -- used occasionally and never on more than one machine at a time. (my use is personal / non-profit / start-up and (maybe, occasionally) for-profit consulting business)
