PDF Annotator (Version 4!)

Business & Finance Software > PDF - Annotation

Mark up any PDF file

For quite a while, Adobe PDF documents were a lot like goldfish - nice to look at, but you couldn't really do anything with them. For instance, if you wanted to make a comment or correction, you either had to email your suggestions outside of the document, or, worse yet, if you needed to sign a document in PDF form, you'd have to print it out, slap your John Hancock on it, then rescan the whole thing back into PDF.

PDF Annotator 4 brings a whole new level of utility to PDF documents, by allowing you to add your own comments, corrections, signatures, highlighting, even designs and drawings to PDF files! Your annotations are saved as part of the original PDF file, so you can email documents back and forth with coworkers and everyone will instantly see your notes when they open the PDF, without the need for any additional software.

With PDF Annotator 4, you'll have access to a handy page manager that allows you to work with your documents as thumbnail images that you can rotate, reorder, and clone. A toolbox function means that access to highlighters, colored text, underlines, and push-pins are just a click away. You can even use a tablet or your mouse to draw lines in freehand in the document, and PDF Annotator 4 will automatically smooth those lines into crisp and clean horizontal and 90 degree vertical lines. And, of course, you can manage bookmarks and perform perform text searches!

The latest and greatest version of PDF Annotator 4 comes with a brand new Annotation Manager in the sidebar. The Annotation Manager makes it quick and easy to browse through all comments you've added to a document. What's more, you can filter, print, even export and import annotations right from the Annotation Manager.

The current version also allows markups to be grouped or locked, preventing unintended edits or moves. Start new documents with stationary-like backgrounds, or temporarily display auxiliary lines for your drawings and handwriting. And now you can edit existing comment styles and colors at any time. PDF Annotator 4 is better than ever before!

But best of all, PDF Annotator 4 now gives you the option to create PDFs from any application's print menu or context menu. That's right folks, PDF Annotator 4 isn't just a helper-utility anymore. It's a full-featured PDF creation and annotation powerhouse!

Check out the PDF Annotator site for a complete overview of what's new in v4!

Peter Martin How about 50% off the upgrade price from version 3 to version 4 to reward your loyal followers over the years :-)

Paul S. Will PDF Annotator V4 work together with Windows 8?

Oct 15 2012 at 12:18am
Bruno Verschraegen We paid for 3 upgrades from version 3 to version 4 the other week and actually paid (a little) more than this discounted price. Anyway, highly recommendable piece of software.
Oct 15 2012 at 1:55am
Oliver Grahl Hi Paul,
PDF Annotator 4 supports Windows 8 very well. It even went through the Windows 8 certification without any issues. The only thing which doesn't work yet under Win8 is the "Print to PDF Annotator" printer, which will receive a (free) upgrade in the next 1-2 weeks.

Actually, seeing the note about Print to PDF Annotator. After upgrading from v3 to v4 the other week, we noticed that the "Print to PDF Annotator" option has disappeared from the print options list - and we are not running WIndows 8 but WIndows 7 Ultimate. Will this too be fixed and will we receive the update automatically?
Oct 15 2012 at 2:38am
Oliver Grahl @Bruno: There's a fix for that! Email us at support AT grahl-software.com and I can send you more information.

Javier Gil Have there been any improvements in this version for the transparency issues?
What about stamps management? there are issues when importing new stamps: size is different for example.
If upgrading our current version (v3 in my case) is more expensive than buying a new license, do you reckon I should buy a new license instead? (I think you guys should think a little more about your faithful users, we deserve to be treated at least just as well if not better than new customers ;) )
Oct 16 2012 at 2:47am
Oliver Grahl Javier, did you report the issues you're referring to before? Please send us an email to support AT grahl-software.com, and we'll be happy to help. Our upgrade price for the single license is US$34.95, I'd say it's neither more expensive than this deal, nor is it cheaper. It's the same. :-)
GRAHL software design Vendor - Oct 16 2012 at 4:14am
Roger Thomasson Folks, please, no more requests for an upgrade discount here. It's not gonna happen and we don't want to have to start deleting comments.
BitsDuJour Admin - Oct 16 2012 at 2:01pm
Danny @Peter Martin

I get you now! Somewhere you are right! Acceptable upgrades discount would like 70 to 75%. But good so be it.
Oct 16 2012 at 2:14pm
Peter R Can I download the german version and buy my license code here?

Thank you.
Oct 17 2012 at 3:21am
Oliver Grahl @Peter R: Natürlich! PDF Annotator 4 is multi-lingual. It will eventually pick up the right language on install, if not, just switch it in the settings. We do presently support English, German and French.

Mary Wilson I was comparing the new to the old version, and see a couple of new features that this makes it worth the cost of upgrading for me. I only have one question which will effect my decision on whether to upgrade or not. Starting to use my laptop more than my main system. Can I put my one copy on both my laptop and my main system without having to buy two copies.
Oct 17 2012 at 5:27am
Oliver Grahl @Mary Wilson: Good that you asked this question! Our license agreement allows a single license to be installed on up to two computers, as long as only one of both installations will be used at a time. So, only if you'd use both simultaneously (yourself with your octopus arms, or you and somebody else), you'd need a second license. Does that sound fair?
GRAHL software design Vendor - Oct 17 2012 at 5:32am
Danny It Is always possible to upgrade discount also if one has previously skipped upgrade version? Example: PDF Annotator version 3 to upgrade PDF Annotator version 5 or so?
Oct 17 2012 at 6:04am
Oliver Grahl @Danny: All previous versions are upgrade eligible, yes.
GRAHL software design Vendor - Oct 17 2012 at 6:07am
Danny Have just a few hours with a trial version tested and tried out. There are untold many opportunities to work with the PDF. This is a must-have tool!
Oct 17 2012 at 6:40am
Lito I know you claim any PDF but I want to be sure, will this let you annotate protected PDFs? My issue with PDFs is many are set to be unmodifiable which for somethings makes no sense at all. So if I want to put a note in a motherboard manual PDF for future reference, it won't let me without a password. The workarounds aren't exactly nice like printing out the manual into another PDF and tripling or quadrupling the size of it so I can add comments/notes.
Oct 17 2012 at 7:59am
Oliver Grahl @Lito: If a PDF is password protected and commenting is not allowed, then you cannot annotate it in PDF Annotator. That's the nature of PDF security. As you say, the workaround is to print the PDF into a new document - as far as the original author allowed printing. Nobody can prevent you from editing a copy of a document. I won't agree that this will quadruple the document's size. Printing to PDF is not scanning (and converting all pages to images). It can even reduce the size, but all that depends on the document.
GRAHL software design Vendor - Oct 17 2012 at 8:16am
Max Frenkel I use PDF-XChange 4 Pro to crop existing pdfs so that I can create a new pdf which, for instance, shows only a shortened left hand column of the original. This is very easy and exact to the milimetre. Is that also possible with PDF Annotator (I actually own version 3)?
Oct 17 2012 at 9:04am
Oliver Grahl @Max: Have a look at the Crop tool in the toolbar, and under Edit, Page, Crop Pages and Edit, Document, Crop Document.
GRAHL software design Vendor - Oct 17 2012 at 9:12am
Danny Question: the number of years (on average) there are new version out? I don't mean the small secondary updates!
Oct 17 2012 at 10:54am
Michelle Bereza Wonderful looking product. can you combine multiple pdfs into one document? thanks for any info....M
Oct 17 2012 at 11:01am
Oliver Grahl @Michelle You can combine documents using the Page Manager in the sidebar. There are various commands to insert/append documents into an existing one.

@Danny In the past, we have published one major upgrade every second year. That should also be the minimum frequency for future releases.

Danny Do you stand there for open to maybe in the future a Free Lifetime upgrades license PDF Annotator?
Oct 18 2012 at 12:37am
Steven Avery It looks like a nice program. I have to study the bookmark feature. Suggestion, do your second day ! (Else, maybe I can contact the publisher.) Much as I appreciate money-back guarantees, they are not my cup of tea on internet and software, so I have to try more.

Steven

Anon eMous How small are the PDFs made with this software in comparison to other PDF-creating software?
Oct 18 2012 at 12:56am
Oliver Grahl @Danny: Lifetime licenses are not on our radar, I'm sorry.

@Steven: As far as I can see, the BitsDuJour folks decided to extend this deal for a second day, so you should be fine! But as you mentioned, we also offer a money-back-guarantee, no questions asked.
GRAHL software design Vendor - Oct 18 2012 at 1:10am
VLM I just installed the trial version. But the installer did not offer me the opportunity to choose my installation directory. I would like to choose it. IS this possible in the full installer?
Oct 18 2012 at 11:32pm
Steven Avery Good questions, VLM.

Anyway, I found the bookmarking system to be reasonably intuitive, although I did not try export, combining, searching documents, et.

Sound enough to give it the Bits try.

Steven

Oliver Grahl @VLM: Click the Options button on the first screen of the setup wizard to select a destination directory.
GRAHL software design Vendor - Oct 19 2012 at 12:40am
Lifetime Upgrades @Danny:

In response to Lifetime Upgrades, you may wish to try CutePDF Professional.

Though not as many features for annotating as this product, it has the basics down.
Oct 19 2012 at 9:42am
VLM Steven Avery - Thank you!

Oliver Grahl - In the words of an ancient wise man ... "Duh!" For some reason, my eyes just didn't see that Options button ... twice.

What about my second question ... Does PDF Annotator support a collaborative document review workflow, as Acrobat XI/Reader XI does?
Oct 20 2012 at 8:14pm
Oliver Grahl @VLM, we don't support a review workflow in the way the Acrobat tools do.
GRAHL software design Vendor - Oct 22 2012 at 8:26am
VLM Thanks Oliver. BTW, I do have an enhancement suggestion: Your way of displaying recent documents lags far behind what is available in MANY other PDF products. Instead of having one pull-right from Open, make a separate item on the File menu called "Recent Documents", then group the documents into today, yesterday, last 7/14/30/30+ days. Even better, offer an option to group by category/tag/keyword. Of course, that might require adding some kind of category/tag/keyword to the product. :)

Also, is there a way to restore prior session, and even a setting o make that happen automatically?

Also, what happens to documents that are opened but not yet saved when a crash occurs? Are they lost? In a temp directory somewhere? Really, those should appear in the Recent list, but under an item called "Not Yet Saved" or the like.

Thanks!
Oct 22 2012 at 12:35pm
Oliver Grahl @VLM: Thanks for your suggestions. There's no setting to restore a previous session. If a crash would occur, the program will automatically open the files which had not been saved in the previous session, and notify you. They will display the last auto-save status; the auto-save interval can be set in the settings.
GRAHL software design Vendor - Oct 23 2012 at 12:48am
VLM Thanks Oliver. Hopefully it's clear that my other suggestions still stand. Meanwhile ... if a file has not yet been manually saved, then where does the software put the autosave file(s)? In roaming/data/something???
Oct 23 2012 at 2:24pm
Oliver Grahl @VLM: Of course we don't save the whole document, that would be more than inefficient. Only the "delta", means the latest changes to the original document get auto-saved. That data gets saved to the %Temp% directory, but it's of no use on its own.
GRAHL software design Vendor - Oct 25 2012 at 4:24am
VLM Oliver, I believe I may not have made my question clear. I mean one of the following 2 scenarios:

1. PDF is opened from the Internet choosing the "Open Using PDF Annotator" option.

2. PDF is opened from an incoming email attachment.

In either case, after the document has been opened and before it has been saved or changed in any way, where is it stored? Of if there is a crash right at that moment, is it simply lost?

More clear, I hope! :):)
Oct 25 2012 at 12:07pm
Oliver Grahl @VLM: That part is beyond the scope of our software. In case (1), the browser saves the PDF to a temporary location, and will instruct Windows to open it using the default program for .PDF files. In case (2), the email software does the same.
GRAHL software design Vendor - Oct 30 2012 at 5:01am
VLM Oliver Grahl - Just a simple-minded user here, of course ... The software may be PUT there by somebody else, but what PDF Annotator does with it is another matter, it is indeed within your control ... is it not?
Oct 30 2012 at 8:32am
Danny Those annotations on document are not visible when you open the other PDF reader(s) as Nitro reader only but only when opening or reading with PDF Annotator?
Mar 17 at 1:04pm
Oliver Grahl Danny, annotations created in PDF Annotator are visible in any other PDF viewer, like Adobe Reader, or Nitro.
