Howard Margolis Does the OCR make searchable pdf or just image pdf?
Apr 21 2013 at 10:14am Copy Link
Drive Stark Naked What does "update will allow full PDF content editing at the 'object' level" mean?
Apr 21 2013 at 10:20am Copy Link
John Verbeeten Hi Howard,

The current free OCR functionality places an invisible test layer on the images based (scanned) PDF, allowing it to become test searchable and text selectable, though it cannot be directly editable at this time, we are looking at a more sophisticated OCR plugin for the Editor to be in development later this year.

Drive.S.N., object level refers to pdf objects such as text, images, annotations, etc.

g harris, I'll check with our development team and post back tomorrow.
g harris thank you, i'll check in again then - i'm in process of converting all over to portables, really would like that feature ~
Apr 21 2013 at 11:27am Copy Link
John Verbeeten Hi gharris, actually just spoke with our lead developer and a portable version of the Editor will be available shortly, but not the current version, so it's on it's way :)
g harris Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear - on your website is offered a portable version of the PDF-XChange Viewer -

so I'm not sure if, by Editor, you mean Tools?

I don't want Tools, just Viewer PRO.

Anyways, will a portable version of Viewer PRO be available as this offer? Thanks.
Apr 21 2013 at 12:28pm Copy Link
John Verbeeten Sorry I misunderstood, yes the portable version licenses with the same key from this offer.
g harris thx again for the clarification :)

Kevin Bowers Will this version be able to remove an entire text object, and replace it with an edited version, perhaps created with a word processing application?

Mark Latimer Will this offer come with a license for PDF-XChange Lite as advertised on your site???
Apr 21 2013 at 8:22pm Copy Link
Stefan Hauber Does that mean, that with v3 there will only be one product of yours, because as I read on your website the difference between the Viewer and the Editor is, that the Editor allows 'Full Direct Content Editing', which is (probably) not possible with the Viewer v2, but with Viewer v3 this will also be possible?
Apr 22 2013 at 1:28am Copy Link
John Verbeeten Hello Stefan,

Actually the Editor is intended to be the replacement of the Viewer, so this is the "V3" mentioned in the notes. We've changed the name to illustrate that you can now edit the base contents of a PDF file with the product. All the features and functionality you know from version 2.5 will be there in the Editor + much much more!
Tortuga @John Verbeeten Hello, I have a question
I'm planning to get rid of Acrobate on all my systems (good ridance!!), so I'm very interested by this offer
*The 'Fine Print' tab says we can install on 1 PC & 1 Laptop (not used at same time).
*On previous comments you say there is a Pro Portable version available
So, I wd like to buy this, then install on the main PC & the Portable on my portable toolkit, so can use at as needed on different Laptops. Will the Portable retain all the Pro features?
Thanks in advance

John Verbeeten Hello Tortuga,
Thanks for the interest and question. I am happy to confirm that the use you've described is in line with our license agreement.
Scott Youngman When your Viewer line is updated to Editor (v3), what will be the major advantage(s) of the Pro over the Free version? Specifically, what will be the editing and OCR capabilities of the Free version? Thanks.

John Verbeeten @Mark Latimer Hi Mark, yes indeed the Viewer license key will directly license the Lite 2012 printer included in the offer on our website, as well this offer includes 1 year product maintenance allowing you to upgrade to the next major version of the viewer, The PDF-XChange Editor upon it's release.
Tortuga @John Verbeeten Thank You for your reply.
That is great!! :) Another question
Last year, by the comments from 'Software Guy' back on 8Feb.2012, seems the offer stated upgrades to v.3 were included.
This offer has the same statement, but 14 months later, current version is 2.5.210. So, 1) When is v3 expected? 2) If it's over the 12 months upgrades we receive, are we also entitled to it?
TIA, Peace
Apr 22 2013 at 10:39am Copy Link
John Verbeeten @Tortuga - All of our products include 12 months maintenance allowing for the upgrade to the Editor at no charge. The final release of the Editor will available later this week for Viewer license holders, and available for sale on the website in the next 10-14 days.

So there should be no issue, we have as well grandfathered any Viewer licenses to be able to access this final release that were purchased after Jan 1, 2012.
Tortuga Hi John, appreciate your prompt replies.
Good to see the company honoring the previous commitement :)
Been reading A LOT abt this app. The reviews are quite good, so I was very enthusiastic!
But ..., it also appears this comes bundled w other "stuff"; for a time it was AskToolbar, don't know if it's still the same. [I use the word «stuff», bc the BdJ filters prevent the use of other more colourful terms ...] Just hope it's neither OpenCandy nor RelevantKnowledge, those wd be deal breakers !!!
I re-read all the previous comments here & realise the same installer is used for the Free & Pro versions. Well ..., this means even on the Pro version we need to go through all the same hoops, to avoid installing unwanted "stuff", which is ... quite disappointing!!
But worse, this ALSO means, we can never update/upgrade the app from within the program, for fear of automatically installing some other "stuff" :(
Is there a solution? Or can you propose a way to bypass or circumvent said hoops? We really don't like hoops ...
Appreciate any help on having a clean install
Apr 22 2013 at 2:16pm Copy Link
John Verbeeten Hi Tortuga, The only thirdparty object in the installer besides the product itself is the toolbar, but entering a serial key in during setup will by default deselect the accept asktoolbar option so even if you click next without watching too closely, if you enter a key the asktoolbar won't be installed unless you choose to accept it.
nick stevens I am new to this but have used adobe to convert pdf to word. my graphic artist sends me pdfs that i have to review and always has corrections/edits whether spelling or text. takes forever...will this product allow me to make those changes or are there limitations that i should eb aware of? thanks
Apr 23 2013 at 12:12am Copy Link
John Verbeeten Hi Nick,

the new Editor will allow you to edit the content of the PDF directly without having to first convert it to a more traditional editable format like Word etc. Bear in mind that the PDF standard was coordinate based and as such not designed from the outset to flow like a word processing document is. A Viewer license bought now will also unlock the new Editor.

Try the Editor and see if it works to your needs, it can be tested without a license. You could also use PDF-Tools from our line up to convert a PDF to a .doc or .rtf file but just remember that you may well need to tweak the new file as this kind of reverse conversion is not a headline feature.

Hope that helps
nick stevens thanks John, I will try it and if it works I will certainly buy it...

John Verbeeten Hello Nick,
All our products work on both 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows, and the "DEMO" stamps will only be added while you are working in trial mode. Once you obtain a valid license those will no longer be added to new documents you modify.
nick stevens John, the trial download pop up tells me that only 32 bit works. i tried it twice and got the same answer....

CJCotter I don't mean to sound like a mindless cheerleader, but I'm already a fan of the free version. I use it EVERY day. The IT guy at where I work has also installed it on some of the company machines. OOOO, can't wait for this offer to come out! Adobe is nothing but bloatware.
Apr 23 2013 at 3:09am Copy Link
John Verbeeten Hello Nick,

Please make sure you are downloading the .zip install package as the .msi installers are indeed specific for 32 bit and 64 bit OS - and there are separate versions for either. The Zip installer contains all files needed for both 32 and 64 bit OS versions.
John Verbeeten Thanks for the kind words Christopher! :)
Harry Gerla I had your free version and really liked it, but it had trouble automatically adding up a column of figures a form required by my employer used. It would substitute XXX for the numbers. Will the Pro version have the same problem?

John Verbeeten Yes all the free features of the viewer will be carried over to the Free Editor plus a few extras such as spellchecking for example.
Scott Youngman I've tried many PDF viewers over the years, and generally been dissatisfied because of awkward or limited functions, incompatibilities, bloat, etc. But after using PDF-XChange Viewer Free for a while, I have finally stopped looking. John Verbeeten Hi g harris, I believe it's tomorrow Apr 24.
Drive Stark Naked Thanks for your previous answers. I presently use the free version and think it's top shelf.

I do have a question, however.
I have always felt that the free version contained most of the tools that I needed and that the added tools that the Pro version offered did not have enough additional impact to justify the price.
Will the new version 3 show a bigger difference between the free and Pro versions?
Apr 23 2013 at 1:45pm Copy Link
John Verbeeten The PDF-XChange Viewer Free/PRO are the same product, purchasing a license for the PDF-XChange Viewer unlocks the "PRO" features of the viewer change the Viewer's status from free to PRO version. A Viewer license is advertised on our website for $37.50 as the PDF-XChange Viewer.

The PDF-XChange PRO 2012 is a bundle of all of our end user products and is $74.00.

This promotion is for the Viewer.
John Verbeeten For $37.50 a license provides more advanced features that you would expect from a much higher priced product, and are important for anyone who wants to go beyond viewing and annotating PDFs. The ability to create PDFs from images/scanners/txt files is a big one, the inclusion of the PDF-XChange Lite 2012 virtual PDF printer (value $24.00 USD) which allows you to create PDFs from any windows based application, use of digital signature technology, the ability to assemble PDFs from created pages, extracting pages, reordering pages. The ability to flatten a PDF so that annotations or text and image content added to an existing PDF can be protected from changes and/or deletion are important features for advanced home users, academic & scientific communities, small & large businesses, public service sectors alike, .

The version 3 viewer, "PDF-XChange Editor" will include all these licensed features and will offer the new headline feature of being able to edit pdfs directly at the base content level, like a word processor. Allowing textual content editing as well as formatting font, size, colour of text, adding/removing images. The addition of replace pages, etc. Another major point about the licensed V3 is the inclusion of a new plugins engine, allowing users to add specific functionality via plugins created by us and created by developers that have created third party plugins with our soon to be released Plugin Developers Kit.
Glen Hilton John, thanks for the prompt answers and the extra info for the general BDJ queries. It instills confidence with potential customers. This is a nice, well designed app with a fair user policy so I'm in as well,

Michael R. Having bought PDF-XChange Viewer PRO v1 (which included v2) back in 2009, I just checked your website about the upgrade-costs to the currently promoted version (v2 with free v3 upgrade) to find out, if it makes more sense to upgrade or to buy today.

Unfortunately I couldn't find this possibility there. Is it possible (or will it be, if v3 is out) and what will be the price for an upgrade?
Apr 23 2013 at 9:29pm Copy Link

thanks for that. The available discount will depend on when the product was bought. The best thing you, or any user with a valid license key can do is register that key here http://www.tracker-softwa...t/register and associate that key with an account. When logged into their account, a customer can see what upgrade discounts their particular key(s) have to offer.

nylg You may have covered this but I need to fully understand the stuff about purchasing the Viewer Pro and then shortly being able to avail myself of the free upgrade to what I understand will be then known as Editor Ver3 or something like that.

Please forgive me if my analysis above is incorrect.

Is the Editor Ver3, effectively all of the viewer's stuff plus Editor Tools and these 'tools' being the stuff I would find in your current PDF Tools offering on your website?

I just need to be clear, because certainly the pdf tools type stuff are a real power users dream. Many times I need to work with pdfs and to alter them.

I currently use the free viewer and find it so easy to use. It is well-thought out and somehow just feels like a better tool than the viewers offered by other companies.

Many thanks

Alejandro Marrero Hi. I got your PDF Xchange PRO 2012. I want to know if it include the Viewer Pro.
Apr 24 2013 at 6:31am Copy Link
Cary Adams Hey John... you guys really need to simplify your product line. The free viewer and lite printer were always my favorites, but when I needed more editing power I was confounded by your product comparison tables. Not really knowing which tool would give me the features I needed, I ended up purchasing from Nitro.

Another frequent problem I ran into involved updates to the lite (free) virtual printer... Several times I updated, and unknowingly installed in "trial mode"... of course, I didn't realize that until watermarks started appearing n my pdfs. You guys need to really simplify that installer so it is clear which version is being installed.

Great product, but bad timing for me.

Farhang @ John Verbeeten
Thank you for all the comments you have been providing. I spend most waking hours with pdfs and have tried pretty much all of them and your product line is terrific. I already own Adobe Pro X but for more everyday use, I had been looking at at alternatives and I had been debating between NitroPro and X-Change Pro (not viewer pro). Nitro is more expensive but has "send to evernote" feature.

The v3 with object edit is PHENOMENAL news. I still worry that Viewer Pro may not be enough and might have to buy X-Change Pro (partly because of PDF Tools bundled in it) instead (wish that was on sale!!). So my question: is there any new and upcoming major features for X-Change Pro as well like the v3 upgrade for viewer pro?

General comment for all: as someone who spends too many hours everyday with pdfs, if your use of pdf is fairly standard, this offer is indeed worth every penny. It's a great software.

VLM Does either of you products support PDFmarks PostScript code?
Apr 24 2013 at 7:34am Copy Link
John Verbeeten Hello Everyone!
Many thanks for your interest and comments on this page.

I will reply the last few questions here - and address the person I am replying at the start:

@Marco Pivetta - Thanks for your kind words!

@Danny Thys - Thanks for your comment Danny - biased as it is - but you are wrong - in the 4 year life of the PDF-XChange Viewer - the upcoming upgrade to the full 'Editing version' (which new users will of course receive free) will be the first chargeable upgrade to some users (those owning before Jan 1st 2012) in the products life and there have been copious free upgrades since its release - for example the Free OCR feature - and the new Editor even includes FREE text editing - even for users of the FREE Version !!!!

@Scott Youngman - The new OCR tool is in development and is coming, but I can't make a promise for a date at this point I am afraid.

@nylg - The Editor is the successor of the Viewer, and yes you could say it's Viewer V3. We've changed the name to point that direct content editing is now possible. The Editor will include all the features you know and like from the Viewer + Some from the PDF Tools + some completely new and not seen in our products until now.

@Alejandro Marrero - Yes the Pro package includes the Viewer, and very soon the Editor will be part of the Pro bundle installer as well.

@Cary Adams - thanks for the kind words and comments Cary. We are working on simplifying things indeed - but it just can't happen overnight with so many products.

@Farhang - The Viewer, and soon the Editor are part of the PRO bundle package, and a license for the Pro bundle allows you to use either product. Additionally - a license purchased for the Viewer on today's offer will entitle you for a free upgrade to the Editor as well!
Flo Another vote for this software. I have been using it for several months and I am very happy with it.

Mark Johnson I have been a registered user for some time now of the product 'PDF-Tools' by Tracker, which includes the 'PDF-XChange Viewer Pro' featured here. In my opinion after trying many different PDF editors/viewers there is no better than Tracker's product line. Also the cost of annual updates is VERY reasonable.
As a long-time satisfied customer, I definitely recommend the product.

John Verbeeten @Flo, Thanks for your vote of confidence Flo appreciated : )

@Mark: Thanks so much for your kind words and if you have active maintenance in place your PDF-Tools license will allow you to move to the New Viewer "the PDF-XChange Editor" upon it's release in the next day or 2, if you purchased prior to Jan 1, 2012, email us at and we'll issue you a new serial key for PDF-Tools that will license the new Editor.

@Danny: I'm not familiar with PDF PRO 10 so I'll leave any comments to other users in this forum.

@Colin: Appreciate your feedback, thanks : )

@Rich: The Current Viewer for sale does not include direct content editing as you describe, but all of our products include 12 months product maintenance allowing you free upgrades to all new version releases both major and minor and the next major version of the Viewer in this offer will be released in the next 2 days, the "PDF-XChange Editor" and if you purchase this offer your Viewer serial key will license the Editor directly, and you can edit pdfs as described (as long as they're text based pdfs) not image based scanned pdfs. There is a pre-release version of the Editor on our downloads page, you can test that if you like to get a flavour of the editing capabilities included.
Rich OBrien I installed and tried PDF XChange Editor Pro 3 and can't figure out how to edit anything. I can select text but not change anything. I can't correct spelling errors. I can't change type fonts. How is this an editor if nothing can be edited?
Apr 24 2013 at 10:45am Copy Link
Danny What are the upgrade cost in the future to the next version?
Apr 24 2013 at 10:53am Copy Link
John Verbeeten Hi Rich, please send us an email to and we'll send you instructions with a screen shots rather then use this forum.
John Verbeeten @Danny: If you take advantage of this offer, all of our products include 12 months product maintenance allowing you free upgrades to all new version releases both major and minor and the next major version of the Viewer in this offer will be released in the next 2 days, the "PDF-XChange Editor" and if you purchase this offer your Viewer serial key will license the Editor directly, you can purchase additional maintenance at the time of purchase or prior to the expiration of the included 12 months.
Danny @John Verbeeten,

I know that all though. That's not the point! I get the impression that one is bound to annual maintenance plan to good working (updates and upgrades) PDF-XChange viewer. Is that so?

At most software is it just upgrade payment on each new version license!
Apr 24 2013 at 12:22pm Copy Link
John Verbeeten For the Viewer, you can use the major version you've purchased in perpetuity, and receive minor build releases for it at no charge even if your maintenance expires. Product maintenance is based on a percentage of the retail license value so a 1 year renewal for this product at current retail pricing is $6.56 USD annually which is 17.5% of the license value. If you want to let it expire that is fine you will still qualify for at least a 30% Discount to upgrade to new major version releases. At current pricing without maintenance you can upgrade to the next major version of the viewer for $26.25 USD, and that would include a free 1 year maintenance term.

So really one upgrade costing $26.25 USD would actually pay for being "bound" to an annual maintenance plan for 4 years, which could likely equate to 3 major version releases. But as the consumer the choice is absolutely yours, and no one is bound to maintenance.
Danny @John Verbeeten,

Okay, thanks for your quick response! That is quite clear for me now!

JW Just before I buy this, can I just check what version is on offer here.

I've clicked on the "Buy Now" 'button' [which takes me to the Vendors page] but there I cannot see a version called 'PDF-XChange Viewer PRO'! There's 3 different versions available, but the product most closely resembling what your offering is simply "PDF-XChange Viewer". Is the PRO version merely the paid for/licensed version of the free trial version? So that if I buy the program the license key makes it become the PRO version?
Apr 24 2013 at 1:36pm Copy Link
John Verbeeten Hi John, you're correct, The PDF-XChange Viewer is the product, and installing with a purchased license key unlocks the "PRO" or licensed features of the Viewer, we also sell a PDF-XChange PRO bundle so we've left the PRO off the Viewer on the Buy Now page to lessen confusion between products.

As a big fan of the free viewer (the best of the free pdf viewer bunch IMHO) I'm thrilled to upgrade with this offer - thanks much!
I am considering a 3 user pack. Would that be discounted too? At what price?
Apr 24 2013 at 3:42pm Copy Link

Rich OBrien PDF-XChange Viewer is the fastest and best I've ever seen. PDF XChange Editor Pro 3, like all the other PDF editors I've tested, doesn't seem to be able to actually edit a PDF file. I was promised instructions by email but instead they replied to my email by saying that instead of simply providing the promised instructions I must send the pdf file that I'm trying to edit. No thanks. I can tell you the pdf file is not locked or password protected because I created it. With 30 years of computing experience, if PDF XChange Editor Pro 3 was capable of correcting one character in a misspelled word, I should be able to figure it out. I can't. I was planning to spend the money for this Bits Du Jour offer but without evidence that the editor can actually edit a PDF file, why should I?

John Verbeeten Ralph,

you can download the current release of the Editor here;

Its the first item available for download on that page.

Your existing serial as it was provided after Jan 1st 2012 will function and a new 'Gold' release is due this weekend that adds all remaining features we consider required to make this a complete product (e.g. stamps, text annotations and much more)

PDf-XChange Editor can edit PDF fles I assure you so something has gone awry - or there is an issue with the file you have ..

If you do not wish to send the file in question that does somewhat stimy us as we are unable to use the example you have to prove or disprove the fact.

Are you 100% sure you are using the Editor and not the Viewer ?

B Josephs @Rich OBrien
I assume you are trying to edit an image based pdf, such as from a scan. Try using Google chrome to save text as a pdf file (print to pdf). You should be able to edit the text using the "edit content" button on the toolbar (it worked fine for me).

John Verbeeten Excellent news - pleased to have you on board :)
Rich OBrien Is there a way to change the type font of a pdf file using PDF XChange Editor Pro 3?

Thanks for your help. I found the Edit Content tool on the toolbar. It does allow me to correct spelling, type text and change text to bold or bold to regular.

It appears there is no way to change the type font or the point size of type. Or is there?
Apr 24 2013 at 9:04pm Copy Link
John Verbeeten You can indeed - select the Edit Content tool on the toolbar - select the text you wish to modify (e.g. highlight with the mouse) and then change the text attribute (font, size etc) in the toolbar.
do note as mentioned above - if it is an image based PDF file (even if it looks like text - for example a scanned document) then you cannot do this - it must be text based content rather than an image based representation of text.

Hope that helps
Rich OBrien Below the toolbar I found a little arrow which opened a hidden second toolbar which has all the text formatting tools I was looking for. You might consider automatically making the formatting toolbar appear whenever Edit Content is selected.
Even better, combine the Select Text and Edit Content functions. At least put Select Text and Edit Content next to each other.
I appreciate that the font list is WYSIWYG with each font displayed as it looks.
I paid for a license. Your prompt replies to my questions made all the difference.

John Verbeeten Hi,

actually the extra toolbar should become visible as soon as you select editable content ... anyway pleased you got here and all is now well :)
John Verbeeten Thanks for the kind comments, order and peace to you too :)
Tortuga Hi John
** Just to re-confirm smthing ...
So, by buying the app, I have 1Y upgrades, right?
By adding 3Y, I have 3 additional years, meaning 4Y total

** Where can I dwld the Portable version?
The new Editor that comes with, where is the portable version of that? Maybe it's just in front of me, can't seem to find! Old brain w meds! :')

John Verbeeten Hi,

You receive 12 months free with your purchase and can add a maximum of 2 additional years making 3 in all.

Currently there is no portable version of the Editor - only the Viewer currently comes in the Portable option - we will release the Editor Portable Version as soon as possible once the main installed version is released as a final 'Gold' release and proves stable etc - I am afraid I cannot be more specific at this time.

We expect to release the 'Gold' release of the installed Editor this weekend coming.

Danny Am PDF XChange viewer to testing. But I can not find annotation features.

nylg Help!

I am trying to make a purchase.

I read the comment yesterday by g harris and your reply.

Went through process outlined but cannot proceed - you go around in a loop - need an account etc.

Is this because I chose PayPal as the option?

Your pre checkout says an account will automatically be produced during purchase from the details provided. I provided everything but then I am returned to you asking me for an account.

At one stage I thought I needed to download the trial software first and do it that way and that was no good.

Please can you help me to complete my purchase?

Frank Stephens @John Verbeeten, if the installer does not have options to prevent changes to file associations and iFilters, then I won't install it until such options to keep my existing file associations and iFilters are available.

@nylg, you need to fill out the entire form including the account (user) name that you wish to use before submitting the order to PayPal. You'll be emailed a generated password.

nylg How to get past the circular create an account login etc when you don't have an account.

This might help others as I had serious problems - even thought I had lost the opportunity to get the discount i.e. offer ran out.

Worse still and unknown to me - this site was being updated so ignored my comment for help and the offer seemingly ran out. Great thanks a lot. (My comment now appears and thanks Colin for your reply to it.)

Then what a surprise - a few minutes later and I find the offer has been decided to be offered for another 24 hours

Making the Purchase

It is not obvious or logical but when you get to filling in all your details then in the bottom left of the screen where it says login as a user or something like that - what you need to do is to put in a user/login name that you make up there and then. Funnily enough it accepts whatever you put in there. How it accepts a user name that it cannot possibly know defeats normal logic but anyway it works.

I hope the above helps others.

John Verbeeten Hi All,

I will reply to the last few comments in the same post. Make sure to expand it to see the reply to your question.

@Danny Thys - Please make sure you have the corresponding toolbars opened and that the document is not security protected and you would be able to add annotations. If you need further assistance you can contact us via the suppot methods described on our webpage.

@nylg - Please try once again as this could have been a one off error. We will try to figure out what might have caused it so that it doesn't happen again in the future.

@valery core - The Viewer license entitles you to use our Lite printing driver as well, and using that you can "print" any web page to PDF. If you need extra functionality like preserving the links on the page - then you will need our Standard package and the IE add-in that comes with it.

@Colin Koh - thanks for the help Colin!

@Frank Stephens - the Viewer installer has both of these options Frank. If you uncheck the "Shell Extensions" our iFilter won't be installed at all, and the existing one will remain active, and in one of the last steps in the installer you can uncheck the "Make PDF XChange Viewer the default application..."
John Verbeeten Hello again nylg,

The log in at the bottom left is only if you already have an account and want to make a new purchase under the same. You should click the "Proceed to checkout" button at the lower right. If you can't see the button on the right, please refresh the page (F5). If still unsuccessful please do e-mail us so that we can send you detailed instructions and screenshots.
nylg John - I did what you say at least twice if not more than twice and ran out of time for the offer. (But of course the offer has now been extended.)

I am not making this up. I have completed my purchase but to do so I did put in a user name in the login area. Please believe me - this was the only way I could get your purchasing system to move forwards and allow me to then complete the PayPal checkout. I imagine it would be the same if I had chosen another payment method.

Yes - your system does create an account - but as I say - you absolutely have to put in a user name where it says enter account details. As I said in my other post here - I made one up on the spot.

I have an account with you and your system used the user name I made up and entered into the account login details. And no - I do not or never have had a previous account with you. I am a new 'paying' customer.

John Verbeeten Hi nylg,

Probably we are speaking of different screens. I was refereing to the screen on which you can still see the shopping cart, and you are probably speaking of the next steps in which indeed you can choose an arbitrary account name.
In any case I am glad you managed to get our product at the end!
Mark Johnson @John Verbeeten -- I just paid for an additional two years of maintenance on 4/14 (11 days ago). I understand from your response to me above that I can upgrade to the editor when it is released. However, I am unclear on what the new licenses are. The product that I licensed is 'PDF-Tools'.
Will that product no longer exist after the new product is released?
Basically what I'm asking is how the new product will change this chart:
Apr 25 2013 at 5:28am Copy Link
John Verbeeten Hello Mark,

The PDF Tools will continue to be a separate product, and is going to get it's overhauling after the Editor is released, so you would get the upgrade to PDF Tools V5 for free as part of your maintenance package.

John Verbeeten Hello Thor,

Apologies - I assumed you had in mind the license key that you received after purchase is not working when you try to install our products.

Is it the discount code that you mean is not working?
Thor Steffen That's correct. You click the link here on Bits, they show a code that needs to be entered on the next page. I copy it. Go the next page (product page). Click buy, then enter the code at the promotion line. No discount is applied and "Promotion Code is incorrect or does not exist" appears above the shopping cart.

Jeff Jefferson Hello John,

Currently I'm using FileCenter that seems to have some kind of PDF-XChange integration. Will PDF-XChange Viewer PRO add any futures to it?
Apr 25 2013 at 9:04am Copy Link
John Verbeeten @ Drive Stark Naked, spellcheck is only available in the Editor, build 300 is not the final release but spellcheck works when you click the Edit Content button, and select a block of text to edit, incorrect words or words not in the dictionary are underlined in red and when you right click them you are offered spelling options or add/remove from dictionary, spellchecking annotations will be include in the final release build 301 due of release in the next day or two.

@VLM at this time no

@Jeff Jefferson: I just spoke with the developers of FileCenter yesterday and they are putting a release update out I believe today that will extend integration to include PDF-XChange 4 Lite, LIte 2012, and the Standard 2012 Printer included in PDF-XChange Standard and Pro 2012.
DrTeeth I am *really* confused as to versions etc. I *have* looked at the web site but an still in the dark. I am always on the lookout for 'better' software and the support that the developer has given here is exemplary. By calling the product a 'viewer' one confuses and muddies the capabilities of this program. The product grid on your site is not crystal clear.

I have downloaded the trial (very nice) and am wondering, with the pro 'version', does one get the PDF-XChange Standard print driver?

MBe If I do have PDF Editor v3 Gold, will I need PDF-Tools v5? Will PDF-Tools v5 come with PDF-editing features, that PDF-Editor v3 Gold not has?
Apr 25 2013 at 9:38am Copy Link
John Verbeeten @Dr Teeth: The Viewer, has become much more than a viewer over time, with a large feature set of annotation tools, document creation and assembly features. With the New version containing driect content editing capabilities it was time to rename the product to reflect that it is much more than a viewer.

Regrading Products, The Viewer includes the PDF-XChange Lite 2012 printer, buying a license for the viewer unlocks the "PRO" or licensed features of the Viewer hence references to the Viewer PRO.

We also sell a PDF-XChange PRO 2012 (bundle) for $74.00 USD which includes all of our end user pdf related products:

Viewer/Editor (licensed)
PDF-XChange Standard Printer (more advanced than Lite)
MSOffice integration
OFFice2PDF bacth conversion utility
and PDF-Tools.
John Verbeeten @M Be: PDF-Tools 5 hasn't been released yet and it is a standalone or complimentary product that includes the Viewer/Editor which will license with the PDF-Tools 4 serial key. Only the Editor will have Editing functionality, PDF-Tools is a wizard driven application focused on dealing with more batch functions such as optimization, watermarking, bookmarks etc, and is better at split/merge/extracting pages when dealing with large PDF files or a large number of PDF files at once. The Viewer/Editor both have such document capabilities but are geared to smaller documents or assembly of open pages with insert/reorder/extract pages ability using drag & drop approach. The Final release of the Editor will be available in the next couple days.
MBe Thanks John for reply,
when will PDF Tools v5 come?
Apr 25 2013 at 10:03am Copy Link
JW @John Verbeeten: I don't mean to be unkind, but as this "conversation" has gone on, I've become more & more confused! [and I already bought this program on 24/4/13 - besides owning a swathe of PDF-handling programs!!]
I do feel the 'Viewer' name (especially for the "new v3" program) will hinder its wider adoption, even more than the current version - there will be so much that it will do, and I agree with Dr Teeth' confusion above!
There is already confusion between the Viewer version and the Pro 2012 version that I feel that Tracker (who I must compliment on their tenacity within this thread!) should perhaps address this with a 'new' version name - if only for clarity about what you'll get with v3!
Apr 25 2013 at 10:40am Copy Link
John Verbeeten Hi John,
This really isn't the forum for such a conversation as with all new product releases we are in the midst of updating all information on the website which will be available with the Hard release of the Editor in the coming weeks. Please send all such questions to and they will be answered by the appropriate staff, this forum is specifically about the promotion for the current Viewer version. and the editor has not been officially released yet. Appreciated.
Mark Johnson @John Westbury -- the current version is called 'Viewer'. The new version which will release in a couple of days is called 'Editor' or 'Editor/Viewer'.
Purchase of the 'Viewer' now will also license the 'Editor' when it releases.

MBe when will PDF Tools v5 come?
Apr 25 2013 at 11:47am Copy Link
John Verbeeten Most likely Q3/4 of this year. Once the Editor end user is released the matching developer SDK and the Editor plugins SDK are next on the release schedule, with PDF-Tools 5 following that, this is a loose timeline and subject to changes as time permits.

John Verbeeten @Jeff: Not the Viewer no but the included PDF-XChange Lite 2012 printer (separate download licenses with viewer key), will be supported by the latest FileCenter release out today I believe, I just spoke with them yesterday. Currently they only integrate with v4 Lite.
Danny PDF XChange 5 PRO is meant more for companies, business and PDF XChange viewer PRO for home user. Is that so?
Apr 25 2013 at 12:45pm Copy Link
John Verbeeten @ Danny: Really depends on your requirements.

Viewer/Lite Printer combo allows basic PDF creation, assembly, annotating.

PDF-XChange PRO 2012 (v5) is a bundle of all of our end user products:

more feature rich 2012 Standard Printer
MSOffice Integration
OFFice2PDF batch conversion utility

We have authors and home users that utilize the PRO bundle especially for converting Word docs maintaining embedded links and clickable table of contents.

Joe Mira Hi,
I purchased PDF-XChange Viewer PRO in 2008. I thought it came with lifetime upgrades (minor & major). Am I wrong?

Am I entitled to a free upgrade to the v3 Editor? If not, what are my options?

Also, I note that when I try to log on to "My account" on your website I get the message "Bad login or password". I'm using same details that logs me into the forum.

Danny In the case of payment should I attach to the point 4 new account details to fill in something on "login" field. But what?
Apr 25 2013 at 2:59pm Copy Link
John Verbeeten Hi Joe,

Upgrades are free for 12 months minimum - though generally we provide all minor updates free of charge until the next major version upgrade (e.g. if you own v1.0 you would get all to 1.99 FOC)

If you are having problems logging into your account - please email and our support staff will assist.
John Verbeeten @Danny: the login username you wish to use.
Joe Mira So, what is my best option in getting v3 Editor? Via BitsDuJour Today or as a licensed user is there some other discount?
Apr 25 2013 at 3:06pm Copy Link
John Verbeeten @Joe: Yes purchase the Viewer via Bitsdujour today, your Viewer license will allow you to upgrade to the Editor upon it's release in the next few day at no charge. As once the Editor is released it's price will increase slightly so this is the least expensive option to get the Editor as soon as it's available.

VLM John Verbeeten -

You wrote: "This really isn't the forum for such a conversation". I could not disagree more.

IMO, you should have held back this promotion another week or two until you had your ducks in a row.. right now, and as the conversation provides a more than ample testament, your product description and product family descriptions come across as an utterly confusing mess.

In fairness to you, I don't believe this reflects upon the products themselves, as the conversation also provides ample testament. But honestly, I have completely given up on trying to decipher your product comparison page, and I find your explanations here, while patient and well intended, just plain confusing.

From my perspective, the sad part is this: I THINK we DO wish to purchase SOMETHING from your product line. I just haven't a clue what that something might be.

My advice to you, FWIW, is to end the promotion tonight and return in a few weeks or so when you have things in order, including the products themselves, the website, the documentation ... whatever you plan to get done, get it done. Then return.

And when you do, my further advice to you is to put up the entire product line on the promotion, or have something prepared in advance that clearly articulates the upgrade path, the maintenance pricing, etc.

I think there is nothing at all wrong with your products, and a great deal wrong with your timing. Just fix that, and you'll be able to spend the next promotion talking about the products' functionality and wonderfulness, and not about which product is coming next Tuesday after its name has been changed and a new birth certificate has been issued, or whatnot.

Danny So PDF XChange viewer PRO is PDF XChange Editor? Hopefully it is no current icon with that pencil! I find not pretty!
Apr 25 2013 at 9:37pm Copy Link
Tazzie I would like to second VLM's last comment. I have been studying the product comparison chart and going over the PDF products trying to match needs to price/budget, and I just give up. PDF-XChange Pro at full price is out of my budget, yet I would hate to buy Viewer Pro/Editor at a reduced price, and end up without all the functionality that I really need that comes with XChange Pro. It would be a better choice on Tracker's behalf to offer all products at a reduced rate ... those of us who give up on the limited products would more likely be willing to purchase the full package at a reduced rate. To me, this is a win-win situation. Otherwise, I will just do as well as I have been so far with the products I already have and just keep my eyes open for the right product at the right price.
Apr 26 2013 at 1:12am Copy Link
Jeff Jefferson @John Verbeeten,

I'm really really confused too about all the different packages and options.

You said:

Not the Viewer no but the included PDF-XChange Lite 2012 printer (separate download licenses with viewer key), will be supported by the latest FileCenter release out today I believe.

I'm sorry but I don't need to know if it is 'supported' by FileCenter. I just wanted to know if the included viewer in 'PDF-XChange Viewer Pro' has any more functions than the PDF-Xchange viewer that already is incorporated in the FileCenter.

Thanks in advance for your reply.
Apr 26 2013 at 2:23am Copy Link
John Verbeeten @John Terdik - we are working on rich text copying for the PDF-X Editor.

@VLM - The discount offer has indeed ended, and if you e-mail us what you want to do with PDF files - we would be more than happy to point you to our cheapest product that can achieve this.

@Danny Thys - the Editor is the successor of the Viewer, and there are free features in both products, and some that require license. The license that you've purchased as part of the promotion is valid for the licensed features in both products.

@Tazzie - thanks for your input. Please do e-mail us your PDF creation/Manipulation requirements and we would go through the features chart for you, and offer you the best product for your needs.

@Jeff Jefferson - we provide developers with a tool that allow them to integrate our Viewer into their packages, but they are free to limit the functionality and tailor it according to the specific application's needs, so most likely not all the features available in our end user Viewer are available through FileCenter.
Jeff Jefferson Okay thanks John Verbeeten, I will give it a look then!
Apr 26 2013 at 6:27am Copy Link
nylg Disappointed!

I purchased yesterday and the download has given me Editor V3. I assume this is the item that everyone is going on about.

I now have three pieces of Tracker Software on my machine.

PDF Xchange Viewer (which has accepted my licence code so I can use the Pro features), The supposed new Editor (viewer) V3, and the PDF Print Lite (produces PDF files - documents).

Why am I disappointed? Well, I got the impression that Editor V3 would provide all that PDF XChange Viewer provided plus more. I could then remove that from my machine.

Instead, what I find is features that I use quite a bit are only to be found in PDF XChange Viewer.

Why does the software now considered to be more of an Editor (V3) not have the two crucial tools for adding to i.e. editing a PDF? These tools being the Text Box you can type into and the click and type tool. I don't want balloons and sticky yellow note comments.

Will the Editor have what I have just mentioned as it continues to develop over the next few days? It is missing two brilliant editing tools that I am sure everyone uses.
Apr 26 2013 at 8:15am Copy Link
John Verbeeten Firstly let us be clear - the subject of this offer was the PDF-XChange Viewer - this as advertised gives you the Viewer and also PDF-XChange Lite. That is what you purchased and that is exactley what you have got - correct ?

The PDF-XChange Viewer is that - it is not an Editor and does not purport to be such - though it does allow you many markup and annotation options and a good deal more to modify PDF files.

Now - additionally - your license as purchased also will give you the PDF-XChange Editor and for which a pre-release version is currently available to 'play' with - minus some of the features which will be available in the final release - text annotations and stamps and some other features which will add to the overall 'richness' of the product.

So - for 40% discount you have all that and you feel in some way you have been short changed and motivated to complain?

Frankly I am astounded that you have the temerity to even suggest pubically that you have not got what you expected or we advertised in regards this offer on BDJ.

However ....

Later today if all goes to plan and our development team approve release - we will make available the PDF-XChange Editor with all its headline features available and will continue to improve over the coming weeks and months.

Hopefully this will satisfy ...
nylg Oh dear, I assure you I meant absolutely no offence whatsoever. If I ever think I have upset someone, then I too am upset and would like to put matters right. My manners and upbringing have always taught me to be fair in the way I treat others.

It is difficult to fully explain what I meant here but I consider myself to be a skilled communicator.

I like your products and have used the free versions for years so I certainly did not mean to be grossly negative and hence ruing any potential sales. This forum has been very respectful and I have noted that. Your replies have been open and honest and so again I respect that.

There is much confusion in general because on this forum it seems some people very recently were receiving the Viewer Product whereas mine was definitely the Editor Product and as you have said all along that product would have many more features than just the viewer. I absolutely appreciate that and that is why I purchased. In principle I am happy with it. I have read every post on this forum extremely carefully and I felt I did understand what I would receive. Indeed, it seems I have, because your final bit of your post clarifies my query. I am sorry that I headed it up as 'disappointed'. It was that heading that you maybe felt upset about on a public forum. I apologise once again - no offence was intended.

Yes you are correct and I am pleased. It seems I just need to wait a bit longer for development to fully complete. No criticism there and all is fine with me.

Yes with my licence I just purchased I discovered that it unlocked the features in the free viewer I have been using for years - thank you for the free features and now the unlocked features. My key point which you seem to think was intended to be nasty and ungrateful was that I would like to just use the new product and thought it had reached the level of development to include what was already in the free viewer I have had for years.

I am no programmer so whilst the Editor did have a lot of functionality I was just a bit surprised that it was missing the Typewriter tool and the similar Text Box tool. Don't get me wrong, I looked at all it offered and things like the Bates Numbering Tool is way more than anyone would expect, unless in say your top of the line package. I did truly appreciate what was in there. I appreciated being able to unlock the Pro features in the free viewer I have been using. That seemed like a bonus to me. I also appreciate being able to make PDFs with you lite printer tool - another free bonus and something I will use a great deal.

I deeply apologise again for any misunderstanding.

Thank you for clarifying matters and I do look forward to a tool that will do all that I could wish for.

In your words: "It will satisfy me..."

I am sorry for having written here and unwittingly appeared to be an unsophisticated ungrateful person. All is now clear.

Many thanks John for all your tireless work as I realise this forum has been tremendously lively and you appear to have been the only person answering. Well done for dealing with everyone's queries so patiently. You even had the humility to mellow at the end when dealing with my seemingly ungrateful words/comments.

I feel much of what I have written above should be in a personal email to you. But maybe this forum is the right place for this to be because I really did not intend to imply that you were offering software that did not do a tremendous amount and with a 40% discount. After all your company has for many years provided free of charge the best PDF Viewer by a long way. It has always been far more than a viewer and so was the one I linked my PDF files to open automatically; that is how good it was - still is.

By the way, eventually can I move across to just using the new Editor/Viewer and hence make my PDF file associations open in the new (my 'new shiny' licensed) Editor V3 (and of course acts as viewer as well)?

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to reply and perhaps I should apologise for being a little 'prickly' and terse with my response.

Your comments and explanation are appreciated and I am confident that on the release of the full Editor you will not be disappointed and we will continue to expand the feature over the coming months.

Have a great weekend. :)
nylg Thanks John

The written word can often be a rather blunt instrument and so I guess we both fell fowl in that respect. All became clear in the end and that is what matters. You feel you still have a good customer and I now feel confident that I will get excellent support. Thank You!

Flo VLM - Seriously? The vendor comes here to BDJ and offers the viewer for a 50% discount, provides patiently support and responses through this forum (unlike many other vendors) and in addition offers a free upgrade to the upcoming editor.

I think John has done a good job explaining their products and certainly does not deserve comments like yours.

Enjoy your weekend!

John Verbeeten Thanks for your comment FLO - appreciated, we have certainly tried to be responsive and I wont rise to the bait provided in VLM's post - NYLG and I resolved the issues in our exchange quickly and without an extended debate on who was right and wrong.

VLM is you wish to email for my attention - you will receive a direct and personal reply from me.

I think thats enough said on that subject too ...

Thanks to all for your support!
Roger Thomasson Just wanted to take a moment to thank John for being so proactive and quick to respond during this very, very busy promotion.

One of our VIP vendors, to be sure!

Colin Koh Hi John,

I Bought the PDF-XChanger Viewer Pro, does it include the PDF TOOL?

Sorry if someone asked Q before.

John Verbeeten Hello Colin Koh,

A Viewer license allows you to use the Viewer itself and our PDF XChange Lite printing drivers. The PDF Tools is not included..

The opposite is true though - a PDF Tools license allows usage of the Viewer. It should also be noted that it doesn't include the Lite printing driver.
If you need the PDF Tools as well - you can upgrade your Viewer license and only pay the difference in costs of the two products. You can do that through the account you have on our website.
Colin Koh Thanks John

Danny I have PDF XChange viewer PRO bought. But me the print to PDF viewer I get unsolicited watermarks button purchase. Why is that again??

John Verbeeten Hello Danny,

I believe that you might have installed a printer driver not covered by the license you have. If you write to our support@ e-mail with your order number or actual license key - we would be happy to send back detailed re/installation instructions that will resolve this problem.
BRUCE TYLER Folks, I have used this software for a few years. The best feature is being able to add a file that is opened in another tab into the current tab.

The interface is nice. However, you will NOT, repeat, NOT be able to edit text with Version 2. That feature is supposed to be part of version 3.

However, Version 3 has been vaporware for OVER 2 YEARS! Tracker has made so many promises about release dates that they refuse to do it anymore. I signed up for their maintenance agreement specifically for V3 I just got an email and they want me to pay again. FORGET IT. It really is a shame because text editing is really the only thing I miss in the software.

John Verbeeten Sorry to hear that Bruce and you do have a point in regards the delays there is no denying it - but ...

Around 95% of the promised features for the Editor are now out and have been released to clients with a generous upgrade policy effectively giving all clients a free upgrade if they purchased after Jan 1st 2012 or there maintenance expired after May 1st 2012 even if there purchase was older.

Additionally we have committed to releasing a further build later this month to offer one last round of Bug fixes and some key feature additions (Drag and drop of pages within the thumbnail view, Copy/paste within a page of images etc, UI manipulation and finally full control over default settings for all Tools and properties)
These should be available soon.

Further - we have publicly stated that if anyone feels aggrieved that they have been short changed in anyway in regards the upgrade to the editor they should contact us and we will be happy to discuss.
Danny @John Verbeeten,

Day John, Mail sent, received instruction, performed, it now works perfectly without purchase watermark button! Thanks for the quick response and support! Just TOP!!!

nylg Hi John and Bruce - nylg here

It has been confusing about the offer and I did fall foul of what I was expecting to get. I am of course happy with getting a licence for the Viewer at a much discounted price, but somehow thought that this licence would lead to an entirely new whiz-bang product to be known as Editor V3.

I have just tried to install the latest release of Editor having previously downloaded the previous release soon after getting my licence via this promotion.

My download does not work despite repeated downloads. I have therefore submitted a request for support via email and pointing out I am a licensed customer and giving my invoice number. This has just been done so I now await the support response - no complaint here as I will give it time to be responded to.

By the way, thank John for continuing to field these enquiries.

Danny About the new version of PDF-XChange viewer PRO that is called as PDF-XChange Editor. Can I be sure to download and install better about 14 days, right?
May 1 2013 at 11:14am Copy Link
John Verbeeten Hi all - to answer the questions posted ;

you defiantly should be able to download and install the editor provided (other than the free functionality installation which is available to all without a license)

1: you purchased after Jan 1st 2012

2: Your maintenance was renewed and expired no later than May31st 2012 if your purchase was prior to Jan 1st 2012.

Otherwise - If you purchased prior to Jan 2012 and your maintenance expired prior to May 1st 2012 - there will be an upgrade fee to get the PDF-XChange Editor unless you can provide us with some communication from us that offered some deviation from this rule ...

Hope that helps to clarify - if you are outside the free upgrade parameters, email us and we will be happy to provide details of discounted upgrades available to licensed user's to extend maintenance and get access to the latest releases and a new serial number as appropriate.

Danny ;

We do intend to post an update to the Editor which will add what we believe will be the last remaining 'headline' features which users have been anticipating and which we feel users would expect to see having used our Viewer PRO previously - in addition to the extensive features already available in the Editor - essentially what many users consider to be missing from the Editor having used the Viewer previously or felt they were promised as coming in the Editor are;

UI Customization, Tool Properties default control (i.e. ability to set default values for Fonts, Lines, Annotations, links etc), Drag and Drop of pages to re-order within a file and 'cut and paste' of content (e.g. images etc).

These will be released soon though I would not want to be specific as these things are not an exact science - I am hopeful though it will not be more than 4 weeks, though it could well be sooner.
John Verbeeten Correct, as stated, "Additionally we have committed to releasing a further build later this month to offer one last round of Bug fixes and some key feature additions (Drag and drop of pages within the thumbnail view, Copy/paste within a page of images etc, UI manipulation and finally full control over default settings for all Tools and properties)
These should be available soon. "
Michael R. It would be nice, if you could post a short comment here, as soon as v3 is available. Until now, it's not, right?

Of course also intermediate state-changes would be appreciated, e.g. a further update for v2.x or what had already been implemented and what is still to do before v3 will be available...

John Verbeeten Hi Michael,

we recently released an update and much of Version is complete - the current V3 (PDF-XChange Editor) is available and has been for a while and can be downloaded from ;

The functionality that is reserved for licensed users can be sued in full in evaluation mode by all - or in full by user with a license which will activate our Viewer PRO if valid and issued after Jan 1st 2012.

Much of the promised functionality is complete - we are only holding off calling this the completed version for now as 1 or 2 key features remain unrealized and in progress - having said that it is still a very comprehensive product even now. But we did promise a couple of extra items not ready so are reluctant to make this a paid for 'Gold' product in replacement of the Viewer until these items are ready.

This should be so in late September assuming all proceeds as planned after all our staff are back from their various holiday breaks etc.

At that point we will replace the Viewer as our primary offering in all downloads and it will be available only as a non core product for Corporate clients etc who prefer their staff were no using a product with editing capabilities.

Hope that helps
John Verbeeten Please excuse the typo's - its late and I wanted to reply without delay

Michael R. Hello John.

Thanks for the fast answer.

I just installed PDF-XChange Editor and while installing it took my Xchange-Viewer license code by default. I just opened a PDF-File and played around a little.

What I saw at once was this ´PDF-Xchange - Click to buy now'-logo on each page.

I suppose it is meant this way, because I only have the Viewer-license and even if they have eventually the same capabilites in v3, the XChangeViewer and XChangeEditor are different products, so there is not a single license-code for both products. Right?
