M. Weston I've been using Personal Knowbase for nearly two years, every day, many times during the day. It's great for capturing everything and being able to retrieve that info. Even with nearly 3000 items, the search is very fast. It's the best organizer (freeform or other) that I've ever used (and I've tried dozens). It does take some thought as to how you want to construct your keywords (aka tags, labels), but the genius of the design includes being able to rename, delete, and/ or merge keywords. I highly recommend it.

Mary Wilson I am just trying this out and have a question about what is involved with a single licence. Will I be able to put this on both my laptop and my main system with a single licence? Going to the web sight, I also see there is a portable version. How does this incorporate into the licence. Also went looking for information on how to back up the system files but could not find anything. Only thing I found so far is to Export/Import items.

Concerning licensing: Our license is single-user, as opposed to single-computer. As long as you are the only person using Personal Knowbase on each computer, you can install it on both computers. Simply install the software and unlock it on each computer using the registration key that we send you when you order.

The portable version is actually the same as the regular version. You just install it a little differently. More information is here: http://www.bitsmithsoft.c...rtable.htm . The same licensing applies -- that is, you can use it on any number of computers for use by one person.

Concerning backup: Each Knowbase data file is a single self-contained file, ending with the extension type .KNO. You would need to backup and restore that data file to protect your data. More details are here: http://www.bitsmithsoft.c....php?t=169 .

Stephen Guy I have been looking for a suitable replacement for InfoSelect 2007 for a long time. InfoSelect is an excellent manager of all types of information and indexes all words in every document, but the new version (2007) is highly unstable in VISTA SP2 and there's no going back to older, more stable versions.
What range of data will Personal Knowbase handle? Can images be stored and viewed? Are tables supported. Does PK index all words in each saved document/note or do I have to assign keywords? What document formatting capabilities does PK have? What types of data formats are capable of being imported? What are PK's printing limitations if any?

Laura Look Hi Stephen,

Personal Knowbase handles only text information. It cannot store graphics, although you can link to external graphics files using attachments or hypertext links.

It does not support table formatting. It handles most RTF-style formatting, including bulleted lists, simple numbered lists, font and paragraph formatting, highlighting, and hypertext links to URLs, local files, or other Personal Knowbase records (called articles).

PK does not pre-index all words in the data file. User-assigned keywords (tags) are the normal manner of quickly locating information. A full-text search (Find) is also available, although it is not a pre-indexed search, so is not as fast as searches in fully indexed programs like InfoSelect.

PK can import text, RTF, HTML, Cardfile, delimited text files, and CSV files. There is a plug-in available for importing Word DOC files. There is also a flexible "custom import" capability which allows you to define a format for importing from text files exported by other software. This custom import would, for example, allow you to identify an XML or other tagged format by telling PK where to look for content, dates, keywords, and so on.

I am not aware of any printing limitations. PK can print anything that it can display.

Ash Goyal For those looking for a more sophisticated knowledge organizer that supports graphics, tables and whatever, I would recommend MS OneNote (competition of Evernote product). Evernote also allows sync of local data with webbased version where you could clip anything on the go and it saves the info under your profile and accessible anywhere. Both have excellent search capability built-in. Good luck!
