What are people saying about Tabbles 5

K H I am intrigued. Before I download, I have a question: Is this an application that opens instead of Windows Explorer, or is it integrated into Windows Explorer, or does it sit on the desktop?

Thanks

Andrea D'Intino Hello K H,

Among the three I would say that it opens instead of Windows Explorer. For the future we're planning to integrate more into Windows Explorer.

Best regards,
Andrea

Andrea D'Intino Hello Charles,

I just tried the installer myself and it worked fine for me. Are you sure you're getting the rigth file? The installer for the version 1.0.6 (the one currently online) is exactly 8.007.218 bytes, is named Tabbles_setup.exe and has the Tabbles icon embedded.

You may also try and get it from our website www.tabbles.net, just get into the site, there is a download box visible on any page.

My best regards,

Andrea

Andrea D'Intino Hi quant quant,

I don't really understand what you mean. Tabbles is an advanced tagging system and it stores the information into a proprietary database. What is it that you want to do exactly?

Thoughts?

Andrea D'Intino Charles,

Thanks for your patience, first of all. That's indeed a weird error message! We use winrar to unpack the 2 files needed for the installer, but it's the first ime I hear that.

Please write me at supporttabbles.net and I'll create another installer for you.

Anyway, you may try to download the installer using the direct link: http://www.tabbles.net/do..._setup.exe

Jessica Jessica Does your licensing scheme allow a main computer and laptop to have Tabbles installed?

Thanks.

Andrea D'Intino Hi Jessica,

unfortunately no: we currently offer a per-computer license. In your case two licenses would be required.

A positive note for users with several PCs: we're currently testing a feature allowing users to save the database) on a removable drive, in order to access the categorization on any pc (as long as the drive is plugged-in and the files are on the removable drive).
Write us at supporttabbles.net if you want to know more about this feature.

Best regards,

Andrea

Andrea D'Intino Charles,

I see that you were looking for a virtual file system: this is not what Tabbles is (even thouigh that's where we're heading to) and it's unfortunate that you got this idea since that's not what we're trying to comunicate.

Generally speaking, Tabbles is meant to be an application helping people to cross-link their files and folders, a feature that greatly helps those who have desk-jobs and need to handle hundreds of documents at once, such as accountants, marketing people, lawyers and so on.

Some of the features you mentioned are actually already there, they can be obtained by a combination of zooming and panning, similarly to how you would you on your desktop. Plus you can already visualize the tabbles linked to a file as standard tags.

Said that, Tabbles is still a young product and we're still actively developing it! A more structured visualization system is high on our to-do list, and current customers will receive it in the future updates. Precisely we're about to start testing a sidebar kind of visualization.

Anyway, your input is very precious to us, thank you.
We'd be happy to discuss more about your impressions on our forum at www.tabbles.net/forum.

Regards,

Andrea

J. D. it looks like an interesting tool. Does it support network drives? How big is a typical database? Is there a way to backup/restore it?
Aug 17 2009 at 9:19am Copy Link

Andrea D'Intino Hello J.D.,

thanks for your interest. Yes, it supports network drives as well as external devices. The database is typical quite small, less than 1MB, and there are built-in features to backup and restore a database.

If you want to know more, you're welcome to ask on our forum, at www.tabbles.net/forum

Andrea

Maurizio Colucci Please note that version 1.0.14, which was online at the time the Bitsdujour offer opened, had a bug in filesystem monitoring which caused Tabbles to crash on startup. The bug is fixed in version 1.0.15, already available for download at this page. You are strongly encouraged to download the new version. Apologies for any inconvenience this might have caused. Kind regards,

Maurizio Colucci, Tabbles developer.

Steve Newport Hello Andrea,

on your site I saw that the business version of tabbles has this this different feature from the home version:

Collaboration (Check in/out of tabbles and files)

Sorry but I don't understand what this does. Can you give some more info about it. Is it only for shared data?

Also, what is your upgrade policy? Thanks.

Andrea D'Intino Hi Steve,

the check in/out: you can zip files (or group of files) together with tabbles they've been tagged with. Then you can send those per email, and the receiver (if using Tabbles) can import them back (and see their tagging) or just unzip and use the files.

Upgrade policy, what do you mean?

Steve Newport Hello Andrea,

thank you for your answer. So for the private use with one PC / Noteboook "Home" is enough or are there other restrictions / features the Business version has?

With upgrade policy I meant how you will handle future updates / upgrades: Will there be included all updates within version 1 or are updates free for one year (or not at all) after the purchase and how much do you plan to charge for future upgrades?
Thanks again.

Andrea D'Intino Hi Steve,

The big feature we're working on is the "shared-tabbles", you can read about it here:

http://tabbles.net/forum/...bbles#p657

This will probably be business-only (or in a limited way also for the home version).

About the upgrades: the license you're buying here is the same you'd buy on our site... you'll be able to update until the version 1.9.999... for the future honestly I don't know yet, we need to have a look around and see how other companies are doing the upgrade prices.

Thanks,

A.

Stefan Hauber As someone doing incremental backups from time to time, I am interested how these tabbles-things are stored on the harddisk.

(1) When doing backups at all, these tabbles are backuped too, right?

(2) Is it one big file, like a .zip-file? Problem with incremental backups would be, that a very small change would lead to a change of this big file, which would lead to the need of a backup of the complete big file...
Feb 24 2010 at 4:12pm Copy Link
0
Andrea D'Intino Hi Stefan,

The Tabbles database is one single xml file, stored in c:\documents and settings\user\Tabbles\databases\ and it contains only links to the files (not the files themselves).
The database itself, is usually about 20-50MB, but when you zip it goes under 1MB (as most of the space is taken by disk paths).

Therefore (as I understand your message) I guess there should be no problem backupping the database once a day, as when zipped it becomes reasonably small.

But the best thing is that you try yourself: install the trial of Tabbles and have a look at the DB! :-)

BR,
Andrea

Nick Kobe I've been a user of Tabbles since in first came out. The software is great. Frankly, it hasn't met my expectations. It has far exceeded them. I've been using software since the days of CPM and CPM86. I've never received the level of service I've received from the folks at Tabbles. Have a problem they take care of it. Have a good idea the add it to the software. Doesn't take months to see changes. You've got to check their forum daily as what you've asked for may be added within 24 hours. REALLY great stuff!!!!! Richard Blake I think I will want several tabble databases, one for files on my PC drives, one on each flash or other removable drive, perhaps one or more for server drives at work. (I understand this limits the program to locating results within a single database.)
Is it possible to accomplish this by renaming or moving the database of interest to its standard name and location and then starting the program? Could each database reside on the drive that it indexes, but be accessed through a link of some kind located in C:\...\Tabbles\database? This would simplify portability and require only a few very small files in the directory on C:.
I see that the Business edition includes database export/import.
Feb 27 2010 at 3:44am Copy Link

Andrea D'Intino Hi Richard,

yes it is: we have a function just for that. The Tabbles database is nothing else than an xml file, sitting in a folder. Basically you need to tell Tabbles "the database is in this folder" and then use this function for switching between databases each time.

The function you use for it is:
Files Tabbles' database Change database path

We have several users on our forum reporting they use this function on a regular base - therefore we know for a fact that it works well.

Guy Good Can you please explain the extra features added in the Business version and would they be useful for a Home user?
What does "Sensible default databases" mean in the Comparision chart? I would be the only person using it, so sharing with other users wouldn't be necessary. I could see using it to process files on a NAS box if that's allowed.
Feb 27 2010 at 6:39am Copy Link
0
Andrea D'Intino Hello Guy,
- the main feature is the file and tabbles export/import: you can zip files along with their tagging and send them over, other people using Tabbles would be able to import the file and their tagging.
- sensible default database: you can create a set of tabbles (tags) then export it and pass it to your colleagues

It works fine on a NAS or any shared drive: as long as Windows can see the drive, Tabbles can see it too.

hope this helps! :-)

Richard Blake I found in the manual [ http://www.tabbles.net/wi...Manual_(EN) ] the statement
"there are only limited file-manager functions included in Tabbles 1.2, currently you can only delete and rename files from within Tabbles." (I assume that is still true in current version.)
Of much more importance to me is this:
Does Tabbles detect the renaming or moving of files or folders by the user through Windows Explorer or through a command prompt (cmd.exe) or through open/close dialogs presented by other applications, and update its database to reflect the files' new name or location? What happens to the database if changes are made when a different database is open, or if Tabbles is not running? Does Tabbles have a feature whereby it locates files in its database that no longer exist and (through a menu option) presents a dialog allowing the user to indicate a disposition for each file, such as:
specify file's new name and/or path;
drop the file from the database;
tag the file for export and later import to a different database?
Thanks.

Andrea D'Intino Richard
the 1.2 is very old...tabbles is now a full file manager - give it a try. It tracks file movements and renaming. It does only for the db's you are using. If the file is moved or renamed when tabbles is not running, a dialog will appear when you try to access that file
I suggest you give it a try...

H. H: Hallo,
I've got some questions:
1. what happens, when one moves a file via windows explorer, does tabble recognize it qutomqtically (background monitoring)  or does one have to correct this manually (e.g. fila x is first in folder a on disk c and then moved to foder b on disk d)
2. how much memory does tabbles need apporximately
3. can you  explain in which cases the ability of the business version
a) to export/import
b) define and share customaized data structure
could be of advantage
thank you for soon responding in advance
with kind regards
H.H.

Andrea D'Intino Hi there, My apologies in advance: our website is pretty outdated and while it shows a lot of useless stuff, it doesn't really talk about the stuff that matters... anyway: 1) Moving files: good question. Currently you need to move files using Tabbles in order for the tagging to be transferred. But we're working on a viable solution to also follow files when moved with Windows Explorer. Can't you give you a date but the technology looks promising and the implementation not too hard. You can read more about this http://tabbles.net/forum/...html#p1768 . 2) Memory: it's very variable and depends on how much memory you have installed (the memory is managed automatically by the .net framework) meaning that if you have less RAM it will use less resources. Typically I would say from 70MB to about 250MB. Memory optimization is also something we'll work on in the future. 3)Business version: a) you can zip files or tabbles along with their tagging and someone else can import them b) you can define a tabbles structure, export it and someone can import it But the real point of the business version is different: the Business version is meant for those who work and their own (or don't need to share tagging with other people). It allows you to tag files and having your tagging synced on other PCs of yours, up to 3 and as long the user the same. So if you have a laptop, a netbook and workstation, you can tag your files once and use the tagging from your other 2 pcs. P.S.: did you have a look at the http://www.tabbles.net/fo...-t296.html feature? They are enabled in the Corporate version (with no limits) and in the Home version (limited to 4 machines). Best regards, Andrea

Nick Kobe Well, I've been using Tabbles since I first saw it on BDJ.  I believe I have gone through nearly every update and beta that has been available since that time.  When I first purchased it I had more questions than answers and wasn't quite sure what to think of the product.  Since then, I've discovered that this is the best file management system (much more functionality then file management) I have ever bought.  I've bought a great many of them.  Unlike other software I've purchased since CPM, CPM86, and DOS to Windows this one is constantly being enhanced, developers listen to you, they even answer email, and have a REAL forum.  I have 10 plus business licenses. I generally do not buy a product on a per computer license basis.  This one is worth every dollar!  You can't beat it for what it is today and won't be able to beat it for what it is becoming.

Keith Norton I tried to purchase 2 of the corporate version but the buying page does not permit the quantity to be changed from one. On parsing the language on your comparison page (linked above on BJD) I get the impression that corporate might be limited to 3 machines. If I buy 2 separate licenses, will all six machines actually share the info?

Andrea D'Intino Hey Keith, I definitely need to check what I wrote, until then: The Corporate license allows you to share your tagging with as many users as you want . Said that, each user can install a Corporate on up to 3 machines. If you're trying to use the same serial on 2, 3...20 machines with different users, Tabbles will tell you "you're not supposed to do this". What Tabbles does is checking the serial number and the user name when it is running: if the user name and the serial are the same (then we assume it's the same person on different PCs) then Tabbles will read the shared-tagging but up to 3 of them... I know this sounds complicated - feel free to email me (using the contact form on our site) if you need to hear more. Bottom line : with 2 Corporate licenses, you can be 2 users sharing your tagging, and each you can install Tabbles on up to 3 PCs, using the same serial number, provided that on the same 3 PCs the user name is the same.   Does it help? :-) About the buy button: you may just buy twice one license... Andrea

Ron K I am wondering if Tabbles sharing can help with something I need to do regularly. I put files on our NAS at home that my wife needs to look at. If there's one she will refer to often, I have to go to her computer and set up the shortcut myself. If I set up Tabbles Home on both computers, and subscribe us both to a shared workspace (or however it works), can I add shortcuts to the workspace on my computer, and it will show up on hers, within a reasonable time, without me having to physically use her computer to make the addition or change? Obviously the target path of the shortcut would have to be resolvable by both systems. I'm just trying to get out of the annoyance of using her computer. Thanks for reading this, and I'm going to get a couple licenses either way.

Andrea D'Intino Ronald, I'm not sure I fully understand what you're problem is, but I guess that using a bit the shared-tabbles you can find a way to sort this out. This is the idea: after you setup both the Tabbles installation to read/write their db on a NAS (3-4 clicks on each machine...), whenver you tag one thing, your wife will be able to see it in her installation of Tabbles (on her computer) tipycally within 2 minutes (we syncronise the dbs every 2 minutes...in the future you'll be able to modify this). You can for example create a tabble called "important stuff" and tag it with the files she needs more at the moment and she can in return tag the file herself and you can see that tagging.  Plus, if you move a file (now you need to do this using Tabbles but we're http://tabbles.net/forum/...31-10.html ) the tagging will be preserved. I hope you're getting an idea... I need to apologize cause for the shared-tabbles the documentation is still poor and the User Interface might need to be retouched... therefore if you have questions/issues with setting it up, you're more than welcome to write me (you can use the contact form) or skype me (my account is andread.tabbles). Tazzie Hi Andrea!  I've installed Tabbles but haven't been able to test it much yet ... life takes over at the worst times LOL.  Anyway, it looks awesome and with the potential to do just what I desperately need with all of my files and data.

Everyone has asked great questions and thus answered a lot of my initial questions.  I do have one question left .... you said

"Currently you need to move files using Tabbles in order for the tagging to be transferred. But we're working on a viable solution to also follow files when moved with Windows Explorer"

I rarely use WE, preferring to use other programs like Opus, Xyplorer (and testing lots of others).  I do a lot of software testing and also working on files (new and old) and constantly working with files and moving them.  It could be a real hassle if I had to stop and use Tabbles every time I wanted to move a file.

Have I misunderstood what was said?  If not, how soon would Tabbles be developed to allow me to work with my files in other programs and still keep the tabs assigned?

Thanks so much for your patience and time answering all these questions!

Andrea D'Intino Hi Tazzie, this is indeed a good question, to answer you I have to go a bit deep into techie stuff...hope I can make myself clear anyway. We're looking to implement some features to detect file movements outside of Tabbles using a technique known as "DLL injection". This means hooking up to an application (in this case Windows Explorer) and "listen" to it. This has been tested with Explorer and the result seem positive. Now, while we could speculate that probably most of the file-management applications use the same API calls that Explorer does when moving files... if this is the case (and we believe it is) then it will also be possible hook-up to other file-managers... but again we're speculating here and basing hypothesis on common sense rather than knowledge. Bottom line: Right now you need to move your files with Tabbles (after they've been tagged of course). Probably we'll soon be able to track file movements from Explorer...this is indeed one of our highest priority and we've spent already a looot of time experimenting different solutions.  Maybe (if facts follow our prediction) we'll also be able to track file movements from other file managers. You can follow the whole story is http://tabbles.net/forum/...31-10.html  ( http://tabbles.net/forum/...&t=231 ). Good night now :-) Andrea

Ron K Andrea, about file change notifications: An older software product named "File Notes Organizer" used a file-detection app called Alfa File Monitor. The Web site for the monitoring product is here: http://www.alfasp.com/products.html.

In this case it was installed as a Windows service, and I presume the desktop app received file change/copy/move/delete notifications. It was used for the exact same thing you want in Tabbles.

David Powelstock Hi, Andrea, For the life of me I cannot figure what is meant by "syncing" tags among three machines (one user) in the business license. The page you link to says, " Allows sharing tagging of one user among 3 of his own PCs on LAN or  http://tabbles.net/forum/...html#p1726 ." But then it also says "no shared tabbles." Is this the same feature as the proper "shared tabbles," only limited to one user? In other words, would I be sharing tabbles with myself (so to speak) using the same software feature as proper "shared tabbles," using the cloud (which is how I'd like to to do it)? Or is there some other way that I would be "syncing" my various machines? Thanks!

Andrea D'Intino Thanks to bdj for extending the promotion! :-D @Ronald: thanks, we'll check it out @David: sorry if the text was not to clear... but it seems you got it right: the business doesn't allow sharing with other users, but only with "yourself". As sharing with yourself doesn't sound good, we used the word "syncing" (which stands for syncronizing).  Basically, if you have the same user on (max 3) different PCs, Tabbles will allow you to see and interact with your tagging over 3 computers...like you tag something from your laptop and you see it on your workstation and your netbook... I hope it's clear now :-)

Tazzie @Andrea ... thanks so much for taking the time to explain your answer.  I'm not a software engineer, but I think I understand enough of what you were explaining to know what you mean.
I thought you were off for the night, so I've been reading and experimenting with Tabbles, then checked back here and lo and behold you were still up LOL.

When I thought there would be no answer till tomorrow, I decided to go ahead and purchase the Home version so I could keep working with Tabbles.  It might not be all that I would like it to be, but it is intriguing and I can already see the functionality and purpose that I could put it to.  Plus, I see that Tabbles has a dedicated staff that is committed to ongoing development and improvement, and  I would like to go along for the ride and see where you all go with it!!!

I had debated over whether to get the Business version or not, cos I use more than one computer and may be adding another.  I hope I could upgrade to Business if I decide to install Tabbles on the other computers.  As a writer and artist, I believe in buying my software and supporting the software designers ... I especially try to find really good software from smaller companies, especially new and up and coming ones.  Thanks to you and Bits du Jour for making Tabbles available ... it's a great way for a lot of us to learn about different software as well as making it easier to afford software needs.

Hope you get a good night's rest ... it's in the wee hours for me, now, so I'm going to tear myself away from Tabbles and grab some sleep, myself!

Andrea D'Intino @tazzie: thanks for trusting us and purchasing the Home license :-) Yes, we're really dedicated (2 people full time and 1 part time) and we really believe in what we're doing here even if it's financially not paying back yet... And I firmly believe that I'll have plenty of time to sleep when I'll be dead... until then I have work to do! :-D We can talk about an "upgrade" to Business/Corporate later on... we're flexible on this :-) @Peter: as we have no activation system we can't offer an upgrade either - all we can do is a discount on a new license if you already have one. But I'm afraid I cannot offer you a rebate over the current BDJ offer (or we'll end up in us handing you 3$ along with a license  :-D )  @arif: you'll get free updates until the 1.9.9... now we're at 1.5.10 and soon we'll release the 1.6.0. I'd say that you'll get free updates until the end of the year or something... Upgrading to 2.x? I simply dunno yet... but we can figure something out when the new versions are out :-)

David Powelstock @Andrea: Thanks for the quick reply and clarification. Yes, I can see where you ran into a terminological issue in the text! One last (probably) question, about the three PC limit in the Business Edition: if I buy two licenses, does that increase the number of PCs to six (still one user), or is the three-PC limit a cap on the size of the one-user network? Thanks!
Aug 3 2010 at 12:48am Copy Link
0
Andrea D'Intino @David: as you said, the Business version is capped to 1 users on 3 machines... and this is truly hardcoded :-)  If you need to have 1 user with 6 machines, you need 2 Corporates .  The Business is basically a capped version of the Corporate (I know this sucks, but hey, we're trying to make a living here! :-D ). With the Corporate you don't have such a limitation:  - if you're one user and have 9 PCs you'll need 3 licenses to go. - if you're 3 users with 3 PCs each, you'll also need 3 licenses. If you have more questions, don't be shy ! :-) Thanks, Andrea

Stephane M Hi Andrea,

My turn to have a question for you :)

Let's say I have a server with my documents on an E drive.
I want to put them in one or several tabbles to organize them.
Then I want to access and manage those tabbles from my laptop as well.
As far as I have understood based on my tests I cannot use the synchronize feature for that as I cannot manage someone else's tabbles. And I am also facing issue with drive letters because I have a mapped drive on my laptop pointing to my E server's drive and then as letters are not the same I cannot even access my documents located in the tabbles I created from my server.

So how can I properly access and manage tabbles on and from different machines and what license I would need for that?

Basically what I am trying to achieve here is to have my documents centralized, organize them through tabbles and be able to access/manage them regardless the machines or the drives I access them from.

Thanks!

Andrea D'Intino @Paul : if your license is a T04   (it looks like "2-T04-xxxxxxxxx....") then your license will auto-magically turn into Corporate (as soon as we officially release it) :-) (The most recent Business are 2-B01-xxxx.... and they don't support sharing, but I'm pretty sure you have a "T04" there) I hope I'm making you happy with my answer... of course you're very welcome to purchase a second Corporate as well :-) Andrea

Andrea D'Intino @Stephane: my apologies for not replying you earlier - I dunno why I didn't see your message... anyway:  - " Let's say I have a server with my documents on an E drive. I want to put them in one or several tabbles to organize them. Then I want to access and manage those tabbles from my laptop as well. " Yes...sounds like you need 1 Business license to do this. - " As far as I have understood based on my tests I cannot use the synchronize feature for that as I cannot manage someone else's tabbles. " This is not correct (and I need to apologize for not being clear on this...). With one Business license you can share your own tabbles db on up to 3 PCs, as long as the username on the PCs is the same .  So, if the username you use on your workstation is the same as you use on your laptop, it should work out fine (and you could add a third PC as well). - " And I am also facing issue with drive letters because I have a mapped drive on my laptop pointing to my E server's drive and then as letters are not the same I cannot even access my documents located in the tabbles I created from my server. " There is a solution to this too :-) Ok, hold on cause I'm writing some scary stuff here: what you need to do is to manually edit the file config.xml and add there something that looks like this: <equivalent_paths_section>  <equivalence_group>   <item client_id="Stephane@PC" path="E:\Documents\stuff" />   <item client_id="Stephane@Laptop" path="Z:\stuff" />  </equivalence_group> </equivalent_paths_section> Now: 1) We're doing a dialogue box for this inside Tabbles VERY SOON... 2) We'll be happy of writing the config for you or give you further explanations (just write us) 3) if you're willing to try it yourself, the file is in C:\Documents\Users\Stephane\Tabbles\Config. 4) the "Stephane@Laptop" you can read it from Sharing > Advanced > Edit personal network name on both your laptop and your workstation. 5) Our apologies for not being 100% ready on this... but we'll make the dialogue, it's crucial for us for different reasons. Bottom line: I believe that you need 1 Business license to do what you need - actually yours is exactly the scenario we had in mind for the Business license .  I also understand that setting it up and testing may require some more time, therefore on one hand we're more than happy to provide all the help you need, on the other hand we can ecceptionally extend the offer for a few days, just for you .  What I'm trying to prove here is that I'm sure we have the right solution for you and we're ready to go the extra mile in your case, not because of the 35$ but because your situation is what we had in mind when we thought of the Business license and therefore we're eager to see it working in as many cases as possible! :-) P.S.: I guess I can't do more than this... if you think I can please don't be shy and ask! :-) Thanks, Andrea

Stephane M Wow! I am impressed by all the details of your answer and I am very pleased to see there might be a solution meeting my needs.

I will try all of this out and let you know as soon as possible.

I also really appreciate the extra you are doing here by extending the offer if I need it because yes I am going to test the solution and might need more time!

I also want to let you know that I actually already purchased a home license yesterday night as I did not know exactly what kind of license would be good for me but I wanted to take advantage of the BDJ deal anyway.
But now I realize that the home license will probably not suffice. :-(

Anyway as I said I will try this out and make sure everything is working out as I would like and I am sure we can figure something out about the license.

Btw, how can I get back to the free version to be able to test all the features now I have already entered my home registration key?

Thanks again!!

Andrea D'Intino @Stephane : It's a pleasure trying to help you to sort this things out  :-)  - As you bought a Home license already (15$) I guess the easiest thing for you would be to buy one more Home: this way you'll overcome the username problem, and it seems to me that you only have 2 PCs, so having 2 Home should be fine for you. - If you entered your Home key on only one machine, then you don't need to reset the license: just install the free version on the other machine and setup the shared configuration. The free version behaves like a Home version but it gives you a nag-screen as you hit the 1000 files limit (but you can still use it afterwards). If you need to reset the license: I guess the easiest way would be to rename (or modify) the config.xml: that's where the license is stored. Try and rename it (to config_backup.xml or something) while Tabbles is not running and then launch Tabbles again.  Looking forward to hear if this is working for you! :-)

Stephane M Thanks Andrea for your reply. I had hopes in getting the business version working with multiple usernames but as you said it is not possible.

So I do not know yet if I need a business or a home license.
I must admit it is a bit confusing between synchronization, sharing between peers (machines) with or without the same usernames or even social sharing/tagging.

Right now, I am doing tests and so far having 1 home licence on my laptop and 1 free license on my server is not working.
I enabled sharing on both and defined where the DB's I want to share are on both sides (read and share all tables) but I can just see the tabbles I am sharing within the home version. The tabbles shared within the free version on my server do not show up in the home version installed on my laptop.

And for the tabbles visible on both I can just manage them from the PC I have created them on. So it is not working out yet for me because I want to be able to see all of my tabbles and manage all of them on any of my 2 or 3 PC's.

I will keep trying and I will be in touch tomorrow through the support I guess as you are probably sleeping now. :-)

Thanks for your help.

Michael R. My current laptop has two graphic-cards inside: an internal, not very powerful, for normal applications and a powerful one for games.

Switching is easy done by pressing a single button on the laptop.

But if a certain program uses the current graphic-card switching is not possible: A message windows appears indicating which application does not allow the switch and has to be closed to let the laptop switch to the other graphic-card.

Strange, that TABBLES is such an application. When running Win7 (x64) there are running some tools in the background and none of them makes any difficulties in this sense, but Tabbles.

So, do you have any explanation for this symptom? Does Tabbles use the graphic-card? Regarding what Tabbles does this would make no real sense to me...

Thank you...

daniel paner I'm kindof in the same position in that there is a lot of overhead to what is to an extent tagging.

I've got a program that I use for planning purposes that allows you to put in a task and add tags to it by typing a comma delimited list. It autopopulates an existing tag while you type. If the tag didn't exist before it's added without any further intervention.

You can then filter by one, some, or all of the tags. You can AND and OR tags together and you can keyword filter either ignoring tags or honoring tags. It's just simple.

Tabbles has some neat features regarding auto-tagging which is very helpful, especially if you are dealing the a great number of files. There's a lot of good qualities of Tabbles - but simplicity isn't one of those benefits. If you truly want to categorize your files in a sophisticated fashion you've got to make that investment in the tool. For me, the barrier of entry has been a bit higher than I expected.

I'll tell you this - Andrea works darn hard on this product and is impressively responsive and engaging. That's one of the primary reasons I'm continuing to chip away at the product.

So, if I purchase the Home version today and then realize I would like the Business edition, would I be able to pay the difference the next time Bits has it on sale?

David Looks like a good program IF there were an easy way to get your current directory structure into tabbles. I have over 1,000 folders on my computer, none of which have the same name. (Imagine 100 clients, each of which has 10 different projects where each project folder must be uniquely named.) If this software would convert the current structure into nested tabbles, it would be great.

Unfortunately, it doesn't. It would take days of manual effort to label each unique folder as a tabble. For that reason, I recommend giving a pass on this.

Andrea D'Intino Hello everybody:

1) Auto-tagging: we have a pretty smart auto-tagging system already, it requires you to create rules and software will tag stuff on his own. We've been considering implementing a full file/folder name-mining feature, but it's far from easy to create an efficient way to do it.
But we may look into it in the near future...plus we'releasing an API system allowing people to create plugin: we might write a basic plugin to do that and then open source it and see what happens.

2) move-rename files: we got a consultant to write the piece of code that would solve this problem FOR GOODS. We're gonna implement it asap.

For everybody else: we're also working on a plugin to tag/sync emails from/to Outlook, which should be released within 2 weeks (Business and Corporate ver. only).

thanks :-)

Andrea D'Intino Marco:
1) about backup/archiving: what youread is outdated... those features are not anymore in the top of our to do.

2) about your tagging db: the Tabbles DB is an xml file that sits on c:\Documents and settings\your_user\Tabbles\Databases
if you have that folder backupped automatically you shouldn't worry about anything (the largest DBs are 2MB at most...). You can even trick the system and backup the DB into a dropbox folder by using the Sharing feature...

Happy Tagging :-)

A C Please allow for addition of another - double - question.

I've just read David's question above, and in fact, it's an important aspect : How to automate within Tabbles the "import" of a file structure with 1,000 or more folders and subfolders - of course, automation would assign a tag named by recreating the deeper parts of the path name ; after creating this tag structure, those need to be tweaked somewhat, again with group renaming possibilities of the tags.

And then, the "physical" (= it's not really physical, it's just the Windows file system and its hierarchical addressing system) file structure of the elements could and should be flattened out !

Today, we have got 1,000 or more subfolders of various indentation levels within a head folder ; with appropriate tagging, that "physical" hierarchy whould be done away with (and Tabbles should act accordingly then), but only to some extent, and here's my question : Would it be reasonable, for response time within Windows (are there big differences between XP or 7 and beyond?), to have flat folders of 10,000 items ? Of up to 20,000 ? Does is depend on file sizes, on overall folder sizes : probably not, but the items' number certainly will interfere from some (big) number on ?

There's a big absence of reliable info upon this in the web, but the creator of a tagging software should have done some experimentation with this (since it's logical and straightforward for him, and rightly so, to promote directories as flattened-out as possible) : Could you share your findings with us ?

This logical "need" (= it's not really necessary then, but if you replace folder structure by tagging, it's illogical to preserve the hierarchical folder structure, except for the very first, highest levels, just for ONE tag / category, whilst doing away with it for all other categories) for flattening-out (= could be done by some file commanders and by some specialized tools) of the "physical" directories after (! since how would Tabbles get the tag names / tag structure if flattening-out was done beforehand ?) a first automatic tagging to replicate this folder structure in one (and the most important of its) tagging hierarchy(-ies), is best proof for the absolute need of an absolute reliable (!) processing of moved items / files within the tagging program, btw.

A C There are tagging functionalities (be they tags or virtual folders, be they proprietary like Tabbles or using entries in the Windows file system's comments feature) in some file commanders, and by some utilities especially made for tagging.

In every such a context, there are two questions of interest for me, and perfect solution of the problems behind these would justify a proprietary system for me.

Question 1 : Since many data are to be tagged with 4 or 5 categories, how fast can those be approached and the tagging for the item in question been done, and is mouse use mandatory, or can you use shortkeys in order for tagging items with frequently-used categories ; is there a way to do "collections" of such frequently-used categories, and have these collections on your screen, instead of users being obliged to select the corresponding categories within their respective hierarchies ; how many of such (different) "collections" can be displayed at once, or stored under given names, and immediately made available by shortcuts or something. What's the current functionality of Tabbles here ?

Question 2 : Anytime you detele, rename or shift (or even copy) an item to another directory / subdirectory (folder, subfolder), there's a lot of work to do for a tagging program (or a tagging function within a file commander), but here, there's a big difference between those programs : Some don't process these changes in the Windows file system not at all, some process only some of them, in a more or less coherent way, e.g. they update tags correctly when items are renamed but deleting, and especially, and more importantly, leave orphaned tags when items are moved ; I know that with tagging, there's less need to move individual items than if you only rely upon your file system for finding files, but nethertheless, it should be doable without creating tag chaos, and especially, with or without tagging overlay, it should be possible to move whole groups of items into other "physical" = file system folders, without your tagging system breaking all the tag links by that. So for memory, it's deletion, renaming, moving or copying of items : What's Tabbles' current stance here ?

I'm not asking in order to denigrate Tabbles, I just want to know, bearing in mind that the first such program (of both categories) that will come with all these problems resolved, will be in a class of its own and could get 95 p.c. or something of the market, just like the tablets' market is distributed for the time being, and for very good reasons.

Andrea D'Intino Dear AC,

you ask meaningful questions. As time is money - and I have little of both at the moment - I'll answer you shortly:

1) About the philosphical question: "Would it be reasonable, [...] to have flat folders of 10,000 items ?". This is not the point of Tabbles as people will still use both folders and tags. Plus, different users have different needs.

2) Automation: have a look at our "auto-tagging rules". We are also working on a plugin to scan folders/files and automatically create tags based on rules.

3) About your Question1: please play 10 mins with the software and you'll be able to tell if it's good enough for you.

4) Moving/Renaming files: we spent an AWFUL lot of time on that and we got a solid solution implemented and will build it into the software soon (as soon as we're done with the Outlook Plugin). It should be realistically released within Q2/2012.

Thanks,
Andrea

Diego SEO Dear Andrea,

It's not clear to me what licence to choose. It seems that the main difference among versions is the Tabble sharing feature. Unfortunately the links pointing to explanations of beta features are broken (Fatal: ./cache/ is NOT writable).

I'm the only user working with more than 3 PCs and VMs. Obviously I'd wish to share the tags among all my networked computers and Virtual Machines.

What version should I choose? Obviously I can't afford to pay the price of the Enterprise version.

BTW: I'm very interested in the new Outlook integration that you mention. Until now I have been using Tags mainly whitin PersonalBrain and Outlook so any integration / synchonization with these tools and other file managers that support tagging (like XYplorer or xplorer) are wellcome.

Diego SEO Dear Andrea,

Thanks for the valid link and the explanation.

Of course I can confirm that I'm the only user. Look, I work at home and use PCs and VMs for different tasks. For example I use VMs to deal with tools that don't work on W7, for testing and so on. In addition, it's better to dedicate machines to specific tasks so I have one server, my main workstation, 2 laptops, a multimedia PC...

So, a licence for 3 machines doesn't seem enough. Maybe I would need a license for 6~10 machines or so.

Thanks,

Tomas Barth I have in some ways similar situation as Diego. I share my time between Sweden and the Philippines. In Sweden I have a QNAP hard disk server in a local network with 3 computers that only I use. In the Philippines I have a hard disk server Synolgy Diskstation with another 3 computers that only I use. When I travel I copy the files from the Qnap to a portable hard disk drive and then to the Synology Diskstation, and vice versa when travelling in the other direction.
My question is if the business version will work for me when transferring files between the locations, and if I need 1 or 2 licenses. Or will I need the corporate version? Or will none of them work for me as I copy the files between 2 different hard disk servers? I don´t really want to have all my files on the Cloud because it´s around 500 GB of data.
Thanks for your reply.

Nick Kobe I haven't seen a comment from a user of Tabbles so I thought I would comment. I believe, though due to the passage of time, that I've been using Tabbles since it first went on the market. I have seen and used it over many changes and use it to this day. I have purchased many licenses and currently use the Business application. Is Tabbles perfect? No, there I things I'd like to see it do that it doesn't do. So, why don't I use a different application? I have tested several along side Tabbles. My experience is that it works best for me. I have 2 2TB drives and 2 1TB drives, desktop, laptops (3), and WIN Tablets (2). I'll ask for more from the software no matter how good it gets. PERSONAL customer support is excellent and responsive and suggested enhancements are thoughtfully considered. I'd recommend it, I use it, and I will continue to use.

bvssunnydale This wouldn't be terribly value for me for finding things, as most of my data (I work in accounting) is extremely structured with rigid naming conventions (this also eliminates the concern with sharing files, since everyone uses the same conventions) However, this might be very useful for files with non-structured content, particularly graphics (infographics, Dilbert cartoons, pretty girls). Is there a portable version of this? and, since I would use this with accounting data (accountings very big on privacy) are there any security features (log-in passwords I'm thinking)? Thx.

Andrea D'Intino Nick: thanks :)

Bvssunnydale:

- we have a free-for-personal use portable. The Business version covers the license for the portable as well.

- we have just released a new version (3 mins ago) including our first open source plugin:
http://tabbles.net/tabble...s-api.html
The function you're looking for has not been implemented, but many people asked for it so it may be that we implement it as a plugin or someone else does, along with some other workflow-oriented feature.

- Privacy: no, we have nothing like that... but the database is a file and you could encrypt it manually. Plus you could run the portable on an encrypted USB stick.

misho Hello there,

Does Tabbles change the link when one changes the file location? This feature has been promised two years ago or so and last time I checked it had the same status. If I move a file with the Explorer, the link will be broken - one has to do all file re-locations via Tabbles, which could be quite limiting...

Also, on my 27-inch monitor, the GUI it seems a little muddy - actually I think it is the icons for the folders - why would that be and do you plan fixing this?

Diego SEO Tabbles software is a great idea at an early and "eternal" alpha status.

I'm extremely interested in tagging my files and folders but finally I had to resign to using your program and had to uninstall both, the Outlook plugin and the main program.

Why?

-Frequent performance issues and crashes on the OS caused by Tabbles.
- Too many incomplete features
- The software lacks of several essential configuration and tag management options.
- I`ve got no replies from you on the support forum for months.
- The forum is full of broken links as well (the bugs section is a broken link itself).
- The website in general is a disaster, a perfect representation of the many bugs also present in the software.
- The software has not been updated for too long.
- There is no support desk or any other way to get help or send reports that I'm aware about.

What would you think in my situation?

My deception is only comparable to the expectations and trust I placed on you as a professional and on your program.

Andrea, many issues should be fixed to change my mind and this review.

Nelson Carvalho Hi.
Sorry my English.

I'd like to know if Tabbles perform these functions:
1) I ask Tabbles to search all PDF files in HD (also partitioned) and it stores the result in a PDF Tabbles that I created (how?);
2) When I add a new PDF file, or delete or rename, this change is reflected in PDF Tabbles automatically (or manually via an update function).
3) Tabbles can sort files by type?

I have a HD with 5 partitions. These partitions contain multiple PDF files, DOC, CHM, etc.. I'd like to access them more quickly, regardless of whether partition in which they meet.

Thank you.

Charlotte Sinclaire A couple of questions: I have an older version of Tabbles -- for XP, I think, that I never really got into using but it always intrigued me. Can I get an upgrade to that, for Windows 7, or is it more economical to buy through Bits du Jour and start all over?

Second question: I'm not sure I understand just what version I need to buy. I have some projects going that involve other people in various locations. We already use Dropbox to share files, but the files have proliferated a great deal, and it would be good to have only one copy and have Tabbles point to them. But I don't understand the limitations and don't know if the Home version would suit or if I have to go the next version up. I am just not quite clear how the connection through something like Dropbox works, how many people I can share with, etc. (The Home version description says 1 user/1 PC, but its reference to "the cloud" mentions 4 people/4 pcs, so I'm confused.) Clarification, please and thank you.

H. H. Hallo,
tabbles seems quite promising, but an important question occured during testing:
- does tabbles have the ability to monitor location-changes of files/folders - e.g. moving a file from folder a to b?. If not will this feature be available within the version 2.x?
(if tabbles does not monitor file movings executed by windows explorer or ohter file managers it could be a dealbreaker)
H.H.

Andrea D'Intino Arkadiusz: thanks :)

Charlotte:
- if you have an old license, you can just update it to the latest one (2.4.10). Just download it and install it
- If you're looking to have more people sharing the tagging (on Dropbox or on a shared folder), you'll need one Corporate license per user.

H.H.: good point - the current version doesn't track file movement (as long as you don't move files using Tabbles (which is possible) but we do actually have developed a solution to that but it hasn't been implemented yet. We hope we can get it done in the first half of this year. But anyway, this is usually something that people worry about only in the beginning: the workflow offered by the program is meant to allow you to forget where the files are, thus slowly you stop caring about moving them around.

Thanks!

Diego SEO Andrea,

I'm a current customer but unfortunately I can't recommend your software to anyone. It's buggy, it also fills the registry with thousands keys (that are not removed if you uninstall the software), it crashed my system frequently, it's not possible to move the files or rename anything (no, it's not a concern of beginners only), I have been waiting for years for improvements of the Outlook plugin. There are good reasons why users ask in your forum if the project is dead...

Well, I'm really sorry saying this because I feel sympathy for you and your project but it seems to me that it's too ambitious and unrealistic. Revolutionary says the author of this review but I wonder if he has ever used the software in a productivity enviroment.

I really wish you a big success with this project but many improvements would be required to provide the reliable tagging solution we are waiting for.

Regards.

Andrea D'Intino Hello Diego,

thanks for your honest feedback, which is indeed more useful than a congratulation.

We agree about the Outlook Plugin (which is stated as in beta and we're still working on and could also be the source of the keys in the registry) and about the forum/blog (which need some serious reworking) as well as file tracking - all things the we're working on.

But the the fact that Tabbles crashes your system frequently is really unheard! Have you submitted your crash reports to us? If so, what did we reply?
We have several thousands users (no exaggeration) and we're in touch with probably a couple hundreds. The very few of them who reported a crashy behaviour, they simply had a crashy Windows and usually solved all their problems by reinstalling the OS. So could you please elaborate this part?

Thanks,
Andrea

DrTeeth This is very good software. The only concern I have is the lack of updates. If I were a new and prospective customer, the lack of updates would but me off buying at ANY price.

As regards usability of the program, I would like to be able to define the shape of Tabbles icons rather than just their colour. I don't have that many categories, but have exhausted the colours to differentiate them already.

the main difference between versions relates to the tag-sharing.
- the Home will allow max 4 users to share their tagging
- the Business is for 1 user with 3 Pcs

thank you for responding. It´s fine to read, that the fileUfolder moving tracking will bi implemented. Do you already know, if this will be within the current verion or if a new major version will be released with this (i´m asking this, because it would not make sense for me to buy tabbles before this feature is implemented (I already own the home version from a former offer, but the lack of the tracking feature was the main reason to stop using tabbles).
Looking forward to the futher develpment

Andrea D'Intino DrTeeth: if you don't use facebook you don't deserve any thought from anyone :-D (kidding). We know our website needs a round of freshing up and the blog/forum need some serious fixing.

H. H.: we're currently focusing on moving from our custom made database to a real SQL db, the file-tracking is definitely coming after. Also, the technology we developed will only track movement done using explorer (as we're hooking a Windows library to do that) so if you're using Opus or Total Commander you won't see any benefit.

Diego SEO Hello Andrea,

I'll give the program a second chance when you complete the development of file and folder tracking and improve the Outlook add-in (please, don't forget the issues with the registry - maybe storing the data in a separate configuration file). Please, keep us informed (newsletter).

FYI: The developers of XYPlorer (a pretty popular file manager offered here as well) implemented tagging features recently and are working on it. Maybe you could contact them to collaborate in order to elaborate some compatibility with your system (who knows, maybe you both are using the same Windows library).

All the best,
Diego

DrTeeth This software is amazing and has SO much promise, but it has not been developed in a long time and the once responsive developers do not respond on the support forum. My post of June 30, 2013 at 3:37 pm STILL remains unanswered. I actually asked about an ETA for v3. I shall leave it up to others to decide how valuable a commitment to a free upgrade to v3 is.

I am surprised to see the program offered here as it is the ONLY sign I have seen in a *long* time that the dev(s) is/are still alive.

H. H. @developer

this is part of the questions/conversation at bdj offer ca 3 years (!) ago:

"H. H: Hallo,
I've got some questions:
1. what happens, when one moves a file via windows explorer, does tabble recognize it automatically (background monitoring) or does one have to correct this manually (e.g. file x is first in folder a on disk c and then moved to foder b on disk d)
H.H.
Jul 31 2010 at 8:12pm

your answer:
1) Moving files: good question. Currently you need to move files using Tabbles in order for the tagging to be transferred. But we're working on a viable solution to also follow files when moved with Windows Explorer. Can't you give you a date but the technology looks promising and the implementation not too hard. You can read more about this here.
Aug 1 2010 at 1:31am "

Can the customer now - after 3 years of waíting - exspect the Background Monitoring or did you stop the development?

Ralph Bressler I bought this some time ago but, like many others, could not effectively use it due to the lack of background monitoring. It is pretty clear from the roadmap/changelog pages that the development of this program is all in the mind of the developers but has not been put into practice! Rewriting 50% of the code is unimpressive unless this means that new features are incorporated. The fact that this software still does not recognize files when they are moved my the operating system makes it virtually useless for any but the simplest applications. I am surprised BDJ would offer a program which has been all but abandoned by the authors! Too bad that such a great concept has met a dead end.

Nebulous User I used the free version (v2.49 - the same one currently available) for about a year, but sometime last year I finally gave up and uninstalled it.

I have to say that Tabbles is an outstanding product and beautiful in many respects. It does what Windows should do natively - allow me to tag and categorize files with multiple tags and categories - without making duplicates or going through the arduous process of making shortcuts all over the place- and providing easy access to them. I looked long and hard, literally, for something like this. There are a couple of free competitors, but none of them are as intuitive or useful as Tabbles.

But Tabbles, as others are pointing out, has not been really developed for years. And support was very, very difficult to get. I ultimately "hunted Adrea down," so-to-speak, just to get answers. That was very time consuming and was also disappointing given the very strong claims to customer service he makes (or at least used to make - I haven't checked again) on his site. When I finally reached him about the problem he was pleasant enough, but he sad my problem would have to be fixed in a future version and told me directly that he doesn't really have much time to spend on Tabbles now. That was a couple of years ago. I'd like to see Andrea give or sell this wonderful product to so someone who will give it the lovin' it needs.

As it stands, an outstanding and unique - but incomplete - product it is gaining a very bad reputation and will likely disappear into oblivion.

The primary reason I uninstalled Tabbles when I did was that it became very resource intensive. The more I used it the more it slowed down my system. But in its defense, my computer is about 5 years old and is well worn, plus I run Vista. It may not be an issue on better computers.

Andrea, please either refocus development and support for this wonderful piece of code, give or sell it to someone who will love and care for it as much as you did in the beginning, or put it on Sourceforge and open it up to the world's development community.

VLM Nebulous User - I wish to thank you for sharing your thoughtful and thorough comments about this product. I must say that from reading the description, this is one of the most appealing products I've found. If it does what it claims, then it's very valuable. But as you say, without ongoing development and current support, every product eventually becomes burdensome. In this case, what a shame!

Andrea - I second what Nebulous User has requested. If you were to give this product the time and attention it needs, then I believe you would have something of great value to many people -- something many of us would gladly pay for.

Best wishes!

Colin McAllister "Metadata: tags are now also written inside office documents, as metadata. This is useful in order not to lose tags when a document is sent via email, modified by a collaborator, and sent back via email."

FINALLY! I don't buy tagging software, because when you move the files from maching to machine you lose the tag info. This now gives me a reason to buy Tabbles (which I did try in the past and binned for the reason given already)

Andrea D'Intino Hello H.H.,

Maybe you could go through the page here on BDJ and check the links we posted... anyway :

1) Yes it does (it's new in the version 3, works only on Vista/7/8, have a look here http://tabbles.net/blog/t...3-is-here/ )

2) That's not a problem: we store the "disk-id" which is unique to any disk.

3) The download is 669 MB, you'll need the file ENU\x64\SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exe from here: http://www.microsoft.com/...x?id=29062 (not sure about the german version)

4) You can also use the "Tabbles cloud", which is our own hosted database. Have a look at this http://tabbles.net/basic-...tabbles-3/

Thanks!

thank you for your answers. Unfortunately I´ve to ask additional questions.

5. I looked at the link wth the news of Version 3, but now I´m unsure, if the tags only are applied to document-files, or if tabbles can tag any kind of file and Keep this tag, even when the file is copied or moved. It would be fine, if you could point this out.

6. Inbetween I downloaded and installed the ENU\x64\SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exe file (german Version) and already tried the 2 different ways offered (1. new seperate Installation and 2. the update(actualization of an older SQL Version) - but nevertheless I´m not able to connect to the database. Tabbles always Shows an error message
"The specified SQL Server was not found or is not accessible...."
What can I do in order to get tabbles running (cloud usage would not be a permanent solution for me)

Thank you in advance for additional help

Nick Kobe Since nearly the beginning I have had this software installed on my desktops and laptops. I love it! However, I'm not so sure that I like the idea of needing to buy and install SQL on my computers. Sounds like an expensive way to go. You are talking hundreds of dollars! In addition, under no circumstances would I ever store data on the cloud which is nothing more then a remote server. Regardless of the claims made regarding data security there are to many examples of security breaches and encryption is not an adequate safeguard for remote data. Plus "Clouds" are very slow and are dependent of the speed of your internet connection. Finally, most internet providers now place limitations on monthly data usage. Any answers Andrea? I'd like to keep using Tabbles, but have strong reservations about doing so. PS: Are my licenses lifetime? Thank you!

Nick: thanks for your nice words - I knew you would be here :) About the SQL: Tabbles runs very well with the free version of Microsoft SQL Server Express (we tested it mostly on that). H. H. @Andrea D'Intino

sorry for asking another question, but since I had given up using my earlier purchased version of tabbles because it did not track file-/folder location changes by explorer I´d try to clarify the capabilities in order to avoid another disappointment (english is not my native language)

7. I categorized 2 files e.g. in folder c.\download\test and then I moved them (one by using tabbles context menu, one by using explorer context menu) to
c:\.download

Now these 2 files are shown an being missed in the folder c:\download\test,
and tabbles asks to manually tell the new location.
That´s not really satisfying, because it means to have a lot of work to do manually again. I´d exspect, that - when running in the background - tabbles would show these moved files in the new loaction c:\download automatically.

Or is this intended, but tabbles has a bug at the moment?

8. if windows explorer - movements and copying would correctly be supported, how would tablle handle changes made by explorer replacements like xplorer2, xyplorer, directory opus or total commander.

Thanks in advance for anwering again

There are free versions of SQL Server. The links provided take you to the 2012 Express version. Tuesday 2014 RTM should be available :)

The advantage (I suspect, I need to verify) of Tabbles is that it supports any SQL server 2008+. This means you can use an existing instance of SQL Server instead of installing a new instance. Many programs do not have this option since it complicates installation for the masses.

If you don't run your own SQL server, then you can always download the one provided in the link and use it.

However, the multi-user/multi-computer model would be supported by having SQL server run on ... well a server. This is a great option for those that understand it. Many people are unable to setup and maintain an always on server. A cloud based server option makes sense for most people but is rarely ever a requirement.

You don't need cloud storage servers like OneDrive or Google Docs to share your own data. Just set up a server at your residence and all of the infrastructure and figure out how to use it. It is your own personal cloud. I can do it :) and I pay over $0.40/kwh. It helps to be rich.

If you can't do this, most human beings can't/won't then please don't ridicule those that provide a service that most can use.

There is nothing wrong with your EULA.
I had an issue with the Pureleads EULA.
Installmonetizer trys to install Pureleads which is decent enough to show a EULA before installation. They are not a virus but I would remove them with a blowtorch if needed.

Most people want a free ride and are generally ignorant of what they accept to install. However, I don't want crap in exchange for free software. I am weird. I pay a lot of money to block or remove ads and I would pay directly for content instead of each time I buy cereal. Most people however, prefer an ad supported model with what they think is "free" content.

Sorry. I apologize. I don't trust the cloud but it is very useful for most people. I took exception to your comments on the "cloud". I don't disagree .... in fact I mostly agree with what you said. It's just that there is no better way for most people. You are likely able to run your own personal cloud if needed.

In this case, the developer, Andrea is hosting and offering a SQL server that others can use instead of setting up their own server. This is a "cloud" service and should be applauded. Most people would not be able to use the database connectivity without some service like this. It's tough to have multiple computers all access the same database.

Helium Music Manager is another product offered on BDJ that has this feature. They don't offer a cloud service which restricts the usage to a fewer people. In their case it makes sense since the product is not for most people. Most people use iTunes and the Apple provided cloud service to sync their music database.

But if you run your own SQL server ..... You can use it for both Helium and Tabbles. I own several pieces of software that use SQL server and I commend the developer for providing the option to use a single server with multiple instances. Others like Neat just install their own SQL server.

Hallo,
thank you for responding again.
Unfortunately tabbles does not seem to work properly regarding moving files.
I made a test: 2 textfiles: "test a.txt" and "test b.txt"
and put them in a folder "test 1" and catagorized both in a tab "testcategory"
I tried with path c:\test 1
Then - in windows explorer- I used right-click menu "cut"
and then rightclick in explorer "paste" in a folder "test 2" (path c:\test 2)
After refreshing the view in tabbles, the files had only been shown with the red circle with white minus.sign in it, asking me to m a n u a l l y tell tabbles where it is located.

Only when I used both - the "cut" and "past" command in tabbles itselfs, the movement has been recognized, showing the correct location.
But having to use tabbles for file(/older operations and the lack of background tracking explorer-operations had been the reason to give up using tabbles 2 for me.

So please tell me what to do to get the background tracking working, because that feature is the decision-maker for me to give tabbles a new try and make a new purchase

Hope that question can be clarified within the time of bdj offer

Colin McAllister Andrea, this is not good..."Our installer on Tabbles.net issues installmonetizer.com," That should have been made more plain.

If you follow the install instructions - as I did - the install package comes from Tabbles.net. I had reached a point where the installer had taken quite some time and I had a decision box where I had to click "agree" to continue the install. As soon as I did this, thought I saw a couple of webpage-alike things flash up and disappear, but I use multiple monitors and was doing other stuff at the time.

So does this mean I now have spy software on my pc? I can see no trace of "installmonitizer" or "Pureleads", but I have been trying out tagging and Tabbles has crashed about 5 or 6 times so far.

Hawkeye @Andrea,

I would only be interested in the Business License. According to the EULA, I can only install the Tabbles on three machines per license, which is fine. This would be two desktops and one laptop. Currently the laptop is docked on the network. I am assuming the special of 5 licenses would be of no use to me since no sharing is allowed and can be synced only.

1. Do we get 5 distinct licenses or one license for 5 users?
2. What would be the upgrade cost when version 4 is released, provided all version 3 releases are free? Upgrade a single license or do we have to upgrade as a 5 user bundle?

FYI, the link, http://tabbles.net/forum/...-t296.html, I will assume describes the syncing is a dead link, as it generates a "404 - Fancy Meeting you here!", on your website. It's being called from the http://tabbles.net/buy-tabbles/#home, under the "Tabbles Business" section under "What are the differences among the various versions".

I am interested in the syncing because, since the Business Licenses are synced and not shared, would the data be available on the laptop when undocked from the network without using any cloud storage?

Thanks,

Tomas Barth I have my data on a NAS. To make it even more complicated, I travel between 2 countries, and each time I travel I copy my data to a portable disk and then copy it again to the other NAS in my other home. And regarding Outlook, I have an Exchange account which I connect to from several computers..
Will this work with Tabbles version 3? Will the indexes follow when copying data, or is the system only made for being used on one hard drive mounted in one computer?

- Tomas: currently the tagging is not transfered on copied files (it's in our to-do list) but it is if you move the files/folder. If you want to keep your files on portable devices, you may be interested in this new feature: http://tabbles.net/blog/n...ith-video/

Techtoysavvy Does the installer/wrapper on your site still use installmonetizer.com? If so I will no longer give you my business. I will not pay for your software and agree to install 3rd party adware on my machines.
People be careful. Last time the BDJ download was clean but the installer on the developer site contained a PUP. This is legal and not a virus but I would not agree to install crap like that on my machine. Be careful and read the EULA.

Craig S. I'm more than a little confused re: the different versions, even after comparing on your website. I think I a table of the features of each version, side by side, would be easier than listing the 3 different versions separately. Anyway, here's my situation, and maybe you can help me decide:

1) Setup is for home. There are at least two different users (my wife and me).
2) We each have a main PC, and I also have a laptop (for 3 total machines)
3) We use Cloud storage (Dropbox and Google Drive right now)
4) We will be adding an NAS later
5) We want to be able to see each others tabbles across all of our machines, the cloud, and, eventually, an NAS.

Which version(s) will work for us? Also, given that Tabbles 3 uses SQL Server, in such an installation, where does the database get stored (in the cloud or on a shared drive?), and where do we need to install SQL server? (On each machine?). Thank you for your help.

Chuck I purchased this last month. I updated to the latest beta today. While the program has promise, for me it has three major issues:

1. If you want to optimally use it on your system, you have to install SQL Server and know how to get around that program and its associated tools. In fact, just updating to the latest beta indicated I needed to update the database. I had to figure out how to do that.

2. While everything I see says it integrates with Outlook, I have yet to figure out how to make it work with Outlook. Other than a mention in "What's New," there is nothing in the manual or on the website to explain exactly how it's done. I could definitely use some guidance on this.

3. The manual, as stated, is a "work in progress." It is not, in my view, reflective of the latest version and its newest features. This makes it difficult to optimize Tabbles use.

I have high hopes for Tabbles, but really want to see more explanation on how to best use its features.

Just purchased business license. EULA looks good!

I did fire up a VM and checked the installer to look for installmonetizer.
Long day today so it happened late here.
Glad to see it's gone.

Andrea D'Intino Hello everyone:

Chuck:
1) We're aware of that, you have the option to use our "Tabbles Cloud" - have you tried that?
2) The Outlook plugin should be installed together with the software, have you checked in Outlook? We're missing the manual for the plugin... it will come soon.
3) You're right with the manual... we're a bit behind with it.
If you have more questions, you're more than welcome to write us at andrea -at- tabbles.net.

We're particularly glad of your purchase - and we're really looking forward to some feedback :)

Ian G: you're right... I got carried away :)
Anyway, we removed installmonetizer, so I hope this case is closed...

Ela S. 1. Using Directory Opus (DO) as main file and document manager, will there be an integration of Tabbles into DO, showing Tabbles tagged files like in Windows Explorer?

Andrea D'Intino Ely: good question... we don't really know.
This depends on how DOpus is managing icons (and file movement) and it may even be different on different versions of DOpus. We've actually received contrasting reports on how the integration works with DOpus and other file managers (like Xplorer 2).
I'm sorry I can't tell more about this.

Ela S. Just installed the Tabbles trial on a single laptop where all my bibliography and files are stored.

I do not want to use a cloud nor LAN storage nor synchronisation.

How to get this working? When starting Tabbles, it asks me either to create an online account or LAN connection and to find a SQL server connection.

I just want to use Tabbles on my laptop - and am just not sure what to do?

Andrea D'Intino Ely: the version 3 needs a Microsoft SQL server to run - whether you install that ( http://tabbles.net/wiki/i...your_PC.29 ) or you use the Cloud.

Andrea D'Intino Tabbles supports external and shared drives in a very advanced way. About the Outlook data, Tabbles will only access it through Outlook, so it doesn't matter where the data is (as long as Outlook can access it).

You can export your whole database in an xml file.

I suggest you to install it (download the installer from tabbles.net) and give it a try!

Nick Kobe I've been using Tabbles for some time now and it is great! It is different then most directory and file management programs tut that is what makes it better then these alternatives. Frankly, I'm an explorer and so I've tried a number of alternatives and from my perspective they are just extensions of Microsoft Explorer. Tabbles does much more and it does it better then these alternatives. When I have had problems with the software which I cannot resolve an email solves it quickly as customer serve is fast and friendly. They lessen to suggestions though they do not always incorporate all of them into the software. Unfortunately, not all of my suggestions are shared by enough users to warrant their incorporation. The bottom line is GREAT customer service and an OPENNESS to customer suggestions.

Please note that I am not an employee of Yellow Blue, an investor, nor am I related to employee or officer of Yellow Blue. I'm just an early user of Blue Yellow.

Dom Franco I use xplorer² for all file copying, moving and renaming. Does Tabbles work with that?
Aug 11 2014 at 10:21am Copy Link
0
Andrea D'Intino Hi Dom,

Tabbles won't interfere with xplorer2, you'll still be able to manage files as you did before.

But we can't tell for sure if the Tabbles' file movement tracking will work (basically, if you tag a file and then move it, Tabbles might not "hear" that operation and lose track of the file position).
That depends on how xplorer2 manages file movements, which may even change from a verson to another.

The best way to check is to install Tabbles and try.

VLM Does the new Tabbles track file movement done specifically using Win Explorer, or file movement regardless of the tool used? In other words, if I use Directory Opus or some similar tool, or if I cut/paste from within a Save As dialog, will Tabbles see this?
Aug 11 2014 at 11:13am Copy Link

Andrea D'Intino VLM: same as with the question from Dom Franco: we can't tell nor predict, it depends on how DOpus performs file move/rename/delete/copy (i.e.: if it uses the same library functoins that Explorer does, or something else - which may even be different in different versions of DOpus.

Please Install Tabbles and give it a try - from tabbles.net

Jazman I really WANT to like this App, but it's not ready for primetime yet. The developer appears to be on the right track but the product is still not production worthy. I tried several times to import my existing tags (categories) from Outlook but each time the program locked up during the "Sync" operation...for me, being able to import my existing Outlook tags alone would have made it worth the price :< Also, just about ALL of the popups are halfway off the screen (I have 2 monitors) and can't be read. Finally, the overlays in File Explorer don't seem to be working consistently and when they do work they are not reflecting the number of tags a file possesses as indicated on the developer's web page. I'll keep an eye on it and maybe the next release will be better.

Richard Blake The EULA for each edition (available through a link on http://tabbles.net/buy-tabbles/) states that a license is granted to "you" and is non-transferable. Is "you" the person (or entity) who buys the license or the person who installs and registers the license. If I buy a 5-pack and the license applies only to me, the purchaser, then how do I make four of them (or three if I need to use on more than three PCs) to others (family members or coworkers depending on license)? I'm buying as an individual, not a business. [I buy most of my own software to avoid the frustration of the approval process.] If I can find four or nine coworkers to chip in for a Corporate pack, will I later learn that transferring the other copies to others is a violation of the license? If the license terms apply to the individual who first installs the software and registers the license, then the one-time third-party transfer provision remains to be used? Thx.

John Näsman Please explain:
According to the comparison table at Tabbles.com the Home version supports "Tag sharing for up to four users", whereas the more expensive Business version appears to lack support for "Tag sharing". Is this correct?

On the other hand, the Home version is said to lack support for access of "your tagging from several PCs: tag and search files on up to 3 PCs with a single license.".

So, if I settle for the promotion offer to buy a bundle of 5 Home licenses, what will I actually be able to do or not do? Must all 5 licenses be installed in the same family or company or can they be distributed amongst the crowd?

Hawkeye @Andrea, John Nasman has asked questions, concerning the difference between Home and the Business versions concerning Tag Sharing which has not been answered as yet.

Also, based on the your website, the Business version is needed to access your Tagging's from several PC's. However, the last item says that 4 users can use Tag Sharing with the Home version and the Business version is blank. This is not entirely clear. Can you clear up the confusion. http://tabbles.net/buy-tabbles/

I need a clarification if the following will work. I plan on using a local server and I would want the other computers to access the tagging's from the PC where the server is installed. I may also want a separate server on two computers with access from the other computers. Is this possible? Would the Home version cover this or would I need the Business version? Can either one allow computers to access two servers?

I'm interesting in purchasing but I don't want to purchase the wrong one or if it won't do what I'm looking for.

Thanks,

Heidi Song It's great to see that Tabbles now connects to the cloud or SQL server, and supports tag syncing across services such as Dropbox. But what I want to know is whether I'll be able to access my tags/tabbles from a mobile (android) device, (for example through dropbox or through the cloud). Nowadays I do a lot of my work on my tablet and phone and I want my tagging system available wherever I am.
Thanks

H. H. @vendor
like some other users (e.g. hawkeye, nasman,....) I need a clarification regarding the differences of tagging home/business version.
Also the difference regarding the license (on your homepage the business version 59$ "up to 3 pcs with a single license" - at bdj offer "5 licenses bundle" - does this mean that with the bdj offer you can use up to 5 or 15 pcs?
Clarification before ending of the bdj offer would be fine.
Hopefully the offer is extended another 24 hours

MK Tabbles confuses me!
I have no intention on being dependent on the "Cloud" for anything (the Cloud is over-hyped and over-rated); and I'm not needing LAN access and I certainly don't want SQL server running in the background all the time.
I just want a version to run on my desktop or laptop like most normal programs.
So which - if any - version lets me do this?

MK Andrea - thanks for the meaningful response.
I see from your website that the Cloud version isn't really a viable option:
"Tabbles Cloud: this is an experimental feature, which is not meant for daily use. It is a version of Tabbles which spares you from having to install Sql Server, and runs on our remote server. This is much slower and frequently hangs, so please consider this only as a demo of Tabbles, which is easy for you to try. In the future, we plan on making the Tabbles Cloud option usable."
Best of luck with that...

Dom Franco I'm willing to try the "experimental" cloud version. I had it installed on a computer that is now defunct. So I will probably need to create a new account (which never worked anyway).
Otherwise, how much of a pain/load on my machine would running the sql server be?

MK Dom Franco - I used Directory Opus which can be easily customised to quickly add details (so maybe tags?) in a Description field and these descriptions are managed via the descript.ion file system.
I can then do a custom search in Directory Opus across all folders for text which match the tagged description.
Maybe Xplorer or XYplorer can do similar?

Andrea D'Intino MK and DOM: dunno where you're reading that, but that is definitely outdated. We have corporate users using the Cloud without issues - it works flawlessly for most users. Obviously you'll need an internet connection to get it working.
We're exploring other ways to use a LocalDB, but we're not there yet.

There are several threads and comparisons between Tabbles and DOpus - those are simply different products, whose goals and functionalities don't overlap.

EDIT: the text mentioned above is nearly 1 year old, definitely not true anymore.I assume you must have overlooked the date of the post :)

Wayne W The cloud issue has less to do with whether it works and more to do with long-term viability. Setting up a tag system takes an enormous amount of time. What happens when you go out of business? The customer is left with nothing but wasted time.

This is not a criticism directed at you. It's the nature of all cloud-based systems unless there's a linked desktop system that allows you to preserve your work.

Chuck Last year, I was hesitant to make this purchase because of the SQL Server requirement, but ultimately did so. After working with it, I made comments on 1 May 2014 on the following points:

1. SQL Server requirement is a challenge
2. Outlook plugin is spotty and unexplained
3. Tabbles manual is dated

On 2 May 2014, Andrea graciously replied:

1) Try Tabbles Cloud
2) We're missing the manual for the plugin... it will come soon.
3) You're right with the manual... we're a bit behind with it.

Fast forward 19 months:

1. SQL Server is still a major limiting factor
2. Still no Outlook plugin manual. I haven't been able to get the plugin to work, even after multiple repair/reinstall attempts. I am currently waiting for tech support via the Tabbles forum (submitted today).
3. Manual appears to have last been updated in February 2015. It would help to see a "Manual Current as of Tabbles 3.1.25" to show users it's up to date.

Going on two years later, Tabbles' dependence on an external program NOT designed for the casual user sometimes makes it a pain to deal with, especially when SQL Server itself acts up. The non-functioning Outlook plugin is personally disappointing, although I know others have had success with it.

I use Tabbles in Windows 7 with Windows Explorer, Directory Opus, XYplorer, and Xplorer2 with varying degrees of success.

Would I make the purchase again? Maybe.

Andrea D'Intino @Toni and @Chuck: we've been rushing this release a bit, sorry for not having a proper feature list for the version 4. What we did, was a major code re-writing "under the hood", that covers mostly situations where Tabbles didn't work in corporate environments (like working with Citrix). When you say that you don't really see the new features, we hear you: from a home-user point of view, we agree this release is less massive than the previous ones.
But:
- We'll develop a few more features and we're working on a MAJOR new feature (but I can't promise this will in the 4.x or we'll make a new version or even change the software name for that...
- If you own 3.x licenses, and are happy, you don't need to worry as those will not expire! We rolled out an update with an important bug fix on the 3.1.29 recently, so the current version is indeed very solid. So basically it's up to you if you will upgrade or not.

@Dom Franco: yes it does.

@Dan Amiel: this is bad!!! Please write us at bugs @ tabbles.net as this is not supposed to happen.

Adolphe I would be eager to hear about other users' experience with this product. I tried it for a while some time ago (single-user install), and while the tabbing concept is immensely interesting, and potentially a saving grace to Windows rotten search capabilites, I was disappointed with the implementation.

First thing is, keeping your tabs in order requires some discipline. That I might put up with. However, the use which is made of a local SQL database looked unwieldy to me. I couldn't find a way to make both my user accounts work with it (the non-admin user account I work under almost all the time, and the admin account I use when I really need to). Since Tabbles is a sort of Windows Explorer replacement, it has of course to work transparently in all accounts.

could you explain how the usage would be e.g.
1 pc, 1 nb, 1 external harddisk, 1 usb-stick (but no cloud-service):
in case I have documents and folders test1 on pc and nb
1. how would I synchronize them?
2 . what would happen in case I tagged the file/folder test1 with "a" on pc and with "b" on nb?
3. what would happen in case I would have a file/folder test2 on harddisk and test2 on usb?
4. what would happen in case I connect harddisk or usb stick with file/folder test2 tagged as test2a with the pc and tagged with test 2b
with the nb?
5. would the nb recognize the file/folder test2 as 2a or 2a or ask what should happen (because the same file has been tagged differently on pc and nb
6. what happens in case a file / folder has been tagged on external harddisk / usb stick in case the assigned drive letter changes?
7. what would happen in case one has to install a complete new system (new pc) - can the tablles-tag information be transferred?

thaynk you for clarifying in advance

Andrea D'Intino Hi H.H.

1. you need to synchronize them with your own sync tool. Then you can set a "Sharing > Folder synchronization" in Tabbles, to make sure Tabbles knows those files are the same

2. if you did the point above well, then you should have the files tagged with a and b

3. 4. and 5. if you setup properly the (1.), then the files will be seen as the same. If you don't they'll be seen as different files.

6. Tabbles would understand the change of letter

7. Yes, the tags sit in a Microsoft SQL Database

Metta Zetty Trying to figure out how the sharing function works.....

(1) Am I correct in understanding our only sharing options are either shared drives or a 3rd party file sharing service like Dropbox?

(2) If I use Dropbox as my public sharing vehicle, will I able to share top level folder access to an entire Tabbles collection and still control (limit) user tagging permissions?
Feb 9 2017 at 10:30am Copy Link
0
Andrea D'Intino @Metta:

1) not sure what you mean with sharing options? You can tell Tabbles "this local folder is a sync'ed folder, and it's called 'Metta's Dropbox'". If you do that on 3 PC's, the Tabbles installed on the 3PCs will see all the three local folders as the same folder. To do this you can use Dropbox or any other file synchronization software or service.

2) you assign permission in Windows Explorer: Tabbles can not override those. The only permissions you setup in Tabbles are related to "who can see your tags and what they contain"

Metta Zetty Thanks for your follow-up and clarification, Andrea.

My question about Dropbox is related to sharing my Tabbles publicly.

(1) Is there any reason I can't provide public access to an entire Tabbles collection in Dropbox?

Please note that I am specifically referring to publicly sharing a Dropbox link vs. using the individual or group "share" function. I also want to confirm that the full Tabbles "tag" display would be available using this shared link.

(2) Am I correct in understanding that the only licensing constraint on Dropbox sharing is whether the use is for business or personal purposes?
Feb 9 2017 at 11:04am Copy Link

Andrea D'Intino @Metta: the tags in Tabbles are not files, they're not stored on your hard drive or dropbox. The tags site in a database. You can share your tagging to another Tabbles user, whether using the Tabbles Cloud or using your own database... with our without Dropbox.

Tag-sharing = user can share his TAGS with other users, no matter if the FILES are on a shared drive or Dropbox. To do this you need Business (single user, 3x PCS) or Corporate (multiple users, one license per user)

File-sync in Tabbles (e.g. Tabbles understands that this local folder is your dropbox folder) = works on any license

I suppose that you want tag files on your dropbox folder and share your tagging, so that other people can browse your tags and open the files in Dropbox? If so you'll need 1 Corporate license per user.

- I know this is complicated, I hoped I explained it ok! :)

Metta Zetty Thanks, Andrea. Your explanation was very helpful.

If I understand you correctly, it looks like:
-- open public sharing of a Tabbles collection or any specific Tabbles tags is NOT option,
-- all Dropbox sharing must be done using the private internal "share" function within Dropbox (instead of public link sharing), and
-- one (1) corporate license is required for each user with whom you wish to share private access to a Tabbles collection in Dropbox.

Is this correct?

Peter User Is there a way I can ask Tabbles to auto-tag a file with a tag where that tag appears in the file name or in the path? For example, if I have tags 'car', 'Honda' and 'Civic' and I create the file:

C:\Cars\Stock\Honda Civic Tourer 1.6 iDtec.pdf

I would like Tabbles to apply the above 3 tags to that file..... BUT here is the kicker, I want to do it without having to specify 3 separate auto-tagging rules, which is the only way I can see of doing this currently. It is OK to do it this way with only 3 tags but when you have (say) 100+ tags, creating the auto-tagging rules become very laborious.

Petr I've been waiting for Tabbles to be on sale here at BitsDuJour. I'm interested in the Corporate Edition. I just have some pre-sale questions:

#1. How does Tabbles handle files and folder movements? For instance, I've tagged files and folders on my Drive C: then I move some of these files to Drive D: and others to Drive E: and yet others to a Network Share. What happens to the Tabbles and my ability to fully use Tabbles features?

#2. What happens when I duplicate files and give the duplicate a new name?

#3. What happens when I copy a file to an archive drive? So, now I have two files with the same name.
#3 (a) In some instances, I want to retain the Tabbles associations and features.
#3(b) In other insances of the copied file, I want to delete the Tabbles associations and features (because it is a file copy just used for archive or backup purposes).

@Petr:
1# Tabbles "listens" that

3#, 3#a, 3#b same as 2#

Andrea D'Intino @Mark user:
what is a "corporate account"? Do you mean a "Corporate license"?
If so: Tabbles does NOT store or synchronize files.
When we talk about "Dropbox synchronization", what we mean is that, if you have a Dropbox folder and you IF you have the Dropbox application INSTALLED ON YOUR PC and configured, you can tell Tabbles that "this is your Dropbox folder".
Anyone else who is synchronizing that folder on his pc can do the same thing with Tabbles.
Only those people, will be able to tag and open files, that are located in the Dropbox (local) folder.
Am I explaning this?

#1. When I move a file or folder, the Tabbles properties remain unchanged and the files or folders behave the same as when they were located in the original location, correct?

#2, #3. When I duplicate a file, the new copy of the file retains the same Tabbles properties and associations, correct?

Peter User Hi Andrea,
I don't think regular expressions will do the job. I am looking for an auto-tagging rule which operates as follows:

If a file is created in [directory name] (and optionally its subfolders) and the filename (and optionally the path) includes ANY of the tags defined in Tabbles, then apply all the matching tags to the file.

I believe a regular expression still requires me to specify the matching text and the tags which apply (I noticed in the Wiki that there was an option to 'put the file in Tabble' - which does not appear in my copy of the edit auto-tagging rule dialog box - all I have is 'tag the file with these tags'

Andrew Griffiths Hi - 2 questions please:

1. What demands does Tabbles make on resources? I bought the product several years ago - I think just when it was first released - but uninstalled because it slowed down my computer.

2. What does 5 licenses bundle mean? I see the license terms are per user. So I presume this means:

Is that right?

Adolphe Interesting discussion. I would be tempted to jump to conclusions and say that this is not an easy to use program (or concept), but of course one would need to check that after actual usage. Nevertheless I salute the support provided here by the publisher. It's a step ahead what I got when I evaluated the program a while ago.

H. H. @develober
thank you for clarifying questions yesterday.
now another question:
setting up the sql server is not too easy, so it seems to be a good idea to allow local db, which will make the program easier to use for non - professionals as you have done in version 4.
Now the question:

when having only created a local database - is it possible to move the tags later (in case one want to use more pcs) to a sql server?

thank you for clarifying before the bdj offer ends in advance

Thanks a lot for your great offer!

I would like to order the Corporate edition and use it *for myself* (I'm the only User) at work and at home.

Can I order Tabbles Corporate - 10 licenses bundle and use them this way?:
- up to 5 Licenses at home
- up to 5 Licenses at work

(Because I would like to share tags, I prefer the Corporate Edition)

Thanks a lot, kind regards, Tom

Andrea D'Intino @Benjamin:

Omg, I wrote you twice already :O
Anyway, what I wrote is the following:

The installer first fails when it's trying to download Microsoft SQL LocalDB, which Tabbles needs to run:

[2748:25FC][2017-07-25T22:49:55]i338: Acquiring package: SqlLocalDB64.MSI, payload: SqlLocalDB64.MSI, download from: https://download.microsof...ocalDB.msi

it subsequently fails when trying to download other packages that Tabbles needs to run. I think this can happen for two reasons:
1) You're not connected to the internet while installing (you should be)
2) You have an antivirus or a firewall that is preventing the installer to download stuff

Can you please check those things?

Adolphe Let me just say that theoretically, Tabbles does what I have always sorely missed in Windows Explorer. As a matter of fact, I don't understand how such features are not part and parcel of every operating system.

Of course, everything is about implementation. It has to be implemented right, otherwise it has no value.

I don't understand why Tabbles is not a household name yet. Is it because the implementation is not good enough ? Is it because it's too small to have made a name for itself ? Is it just me who sorely needs to tag my files, and most people don't ? In any case, I do wish a) this piece of software lives up to its promises, b) it becomes successful.

We certainly can't rely on Microsoft to include such an innovative and useful feature in Windows.

Adolphe A few weeks ago, I uninstalled a previous Tabbles install from a BdJ promotion, which was not my first. I tried to discipline myself into tagging my files. However, having this big extension of the right-click menu staring at me all the time, without any means to switch it off, plus needing to go into a completely separate filing system from Windows Explorer (or Directory Opus, which is my primary file explorer), was really too much.

Also, Tabbles interface was unrefined. It looked as if it was meant for a few dozen tags, not thousands of them.

Now I check up Tabbles new version once again, hoping to see some progress, and discover it has switched to a subscription model. This is getting ridiculous. This has to stop. The whole economy now seems to be content with picking our pockets every month or year. Private businesses seem to oggle with envy at the taxing "model" of governments, and try to replicate it.

Well, guess what, most people have enough trouble earning enough money to buy things once. We can't have hundreds of programs and services installed on our computers, and pay a rent for each of them. However small it might seem for each individual product.

While there might be a case for subscribing to a cloud backup service, for instance, because you're actually renting server space, paying afresh each year for a file manager is way beyond ridiculous.
Dec 27 2017 at 1:36am Copy Link
2
Andrea D'Intino Adolphe: Tabbles is meant to work with a few hundred tags (ideally up to 300-500). We believe that creating beyond 500 tags, defeats the purpose. A good practice is to split longer named tags ("red sport cars") into smaller tags ("red", "sport", "cars"). Hope this helps.

H. H. @developer

I´m really very very disappointed - similiar as Adolphe wrote
I purchased more than one version - and always running into difficulties, so I could not use the earlier versions. Version 4 seemed not to be as complicated as previous versions regarding sql server, so I again bought version 4 in order to support the further development of Tabbles - since the conecptional idea seemed to be fine. But having spent money for not properly working software and now hoping to get a improved version I´m very very disappointed - I never would have bought Tabbles if I had found any hint, that - as an early customer and "supporter" I would be forced to buy a subscription in order to get an improved and bugfixed version.
I stopped upgrading Adobe products and Zoner because of subscription (but at least there one can keep the properly working previous versions, whereas using tablles has been frustrating). Paying for Antivirus - where daily development is required as subscription is ok, But Tabbles by no way is so essential that subscribing makes sense.
I would have bought a regular upgrade version (in case it woould be bugfixed and would work properly) - but subscription is a no go for that kind of software.

Perhaps you may reconsider offering a lifetime license.and win back previously supporting customers

Andrea D'Intino Hi @Adolphe and @H. H.

we're sorry to hear such a disappointment in our change of pricing policy.

We're equally sorry to hear that you're not satisfied with the product, particularly as I can't remember hearing any complain from your side before.

On a side note, I'd kindly ask you to keep the issues separated: if experience issues with our software, PLEASE let us know.

Now, while we're constantly striving to improve our products and we're eager to hear feedback about it from our user base, we're not necessarily open to discuss our pricing policies here - specially as we're doing what the rest of the industry is doing, and we have spent way too much time supporting 3 different version of our software.
We're aware that some people don't like subscription models and we're not planning to run after them waving a sword in order to convince them to purchase this or that.

I would otherwise ask you to check the list of what we're working on - or stick to your Tabbles 4 license which is not gonna expire anytime.

We hope you understand our position.

Chuck I bought Tabbles (v3) for individual use in March 2014 and found it rather innovative but slow and bogged down by external software dependencies. That said, with work it proved a decent complement to my file manager of choice.

Still, I did not find myself using Tabbles all that much, although I liked the automatic tagging feature.

I then bought Tabbles v4 in March 2017, after working through the beta from Aug 16 to correct some issues. As a typical user, I expected a significant upgrade to the software. I was disappointed. The change in background SQL requirements was nice, but nothing else of substance to me occurred to actually upgrade Tabbles itself for individual users. The Tabbles team admitted as much. The Outlook plugin proved hit-and-miss and was only of value to those who actually used Outlook. Still, I invested in the Tabbles team hoping for further improvements.

With Tabbles v4 and time, I found myself actually tagging files with Tabbles less and less. When I bought a new computer, I actually hesitated loading Tabbles, but did so out of habit and, quite frankly, hope it would improve with minor updates and, eventually, the inevitable major upgrade. Beyond that, I found Tabbles to be expendable.

Now with v5 on the horizon next month and a draconian subscription policy already in place (yes, draconian), I simply cannot justify ever making the major upgrade. I truly appreciate Andrea and Maurizio's work, and love to support small outfits with promising products, but I cannot currently justify my continued Tabbles investment.

I find it astonishing the Tabbles team would work this quickly to push a major upgrade; no doubt driven by its licensing scheme change.

I will stick with v4 until the Tabbles team no longer supports it, if I stick with Tabbles at all. Any subsequent investment on my part would be contingent on a rethink of Tabbles licensing, especially as it impacts its loyal clientele.

Andrea D'Intino Hi @Chuck,

we're always happy to hear from you :)

we indeed do not expect anyone owning a Tabbles 4 license, to purchase anything today - this end of the year offer is meant mostly for those who are new to the software. If at some point you'll want to upgrade, drop us a line and we'll see what we can do.

We agree that from a single user's perspective, not much has happened between Tabbles 3 and 4 (it did for teamworks, as the software is now visibly faster, more stable and truly easy to deploy in a Windows network). Since we now have a platform that has proven to be stable and reliable, we're going to invert the trend with the version 5 and release a bunch of new features again.
We'd love to hear your feedback about the upcoming features (you should have received an email from us about that?), there is a link on the page.

Thanks!

Adolphe Andrea,

Thanks for the insight. The one program where I use tags intensively, and which I exploit to the full, is Cinta Notes. I have 4 700 tags in it, and I did not start using it very long ago. I suppose some of them could be merged, because they overlap. Make that a 10 % overhead. I'm still far ahead of 500 tags.

Also, I only collect certain types of documents in Cinta Notes (mainly Web pages). If I needed to cover all the files stored on my computer, that would add a significant number of tags.

Cinta Notes has hierarchical tags, which helps somewhat. E.g.: Cars/Red cars.

Adolphe Re : recommended limit on number of tags.

For the record, I made a mistake in my former comment. I don't have 4 700 tags in Cinta Notes (great software, by the way). That's the number of my notes. The total tag number is not shown, but I guess it's in excess of 500, and growing.

Cinta Notes is not a competitor to Tabbles, as it's a note-taking program. However, in a remote way, it tries to bring a similar solution to the problem Tabbles aims at solving : quickly finding blobs of information you've stored on your computer through the use of tags.

Chuck @Adolphe: Agree with your assessment. In addition, I would offer an alternative subscription model that other companies, to include those who off er their software through BDJ, use:

Once your subscription ends, you may continue to use the software version that existed at the time off your subscription cancellation. By cancelling your subscription, you are no longer eligible for ANY software updates, minor or major.

This would at least give existing users a viable out.
Dec 28 2017 at 6:11am Copy Link

Andrea D'Intino @Adolphe

regarding the exit strategy: after a license expires, Tabbles will revert to "Tabbles Free", meaning that the software is nearly completely usable, albeit with a nag-screen - and only if the user has tagged more than 5000 files (that's the limit of the free version).
So you'll have all the time to export the database. BTW, now the database can be exported only as xml, but we're considering allowing it to be exported only as a .csv

Regarding the notes: this is one of the features we're working on and we'll release soon (we call it "comments on files"). I can't tell yet how many comments can be taken, but it's probably going in the direction of other softwares (so one comment per file).

_*_ The developer of Fortora Fresh Finance (currently Moneyspire), was another developer that attempted subscription based software on software that was not critical to operating one's computer.

The original owner ended up selling (hence the name change to Moneyspire), and now it is back to software that always works with the version purchased. Allows for users to upgrade at their pace not the developers yearly demand for updates.

I am pleased you will reconsider how the software will operate after one year, and your upgrade policy.
