Frank Stephens I haven't tried this, as I don't need it, but $10 is quite reasonable if you do. Microsoft has a couple of similar utilities. The RoboCopy command-line utility comes with Vista and is downloadable for XP. If you want a GUI (doesn't integrate with Windows Explorer like this does), there's RichCopy.

A de Wachter I posted the same link on the teracopy site:
http://blog.codesector.co...racopy-20/

You can read the answer there..in short:
probably a non-fragmentent file being copied to a non-fragmented location. Being a single file the difference would be smaller.

As soon as you work with more than 1 file, or fragmentation the difference becomes very obvious

J Howard At the present moment, what are the practical differences between the free TeraCopy and TeraCopy Pro?

There seems to be some discussion on the CodeSector site about features that are still under development or proposed features that are yet to materialize.

What are the benefits of Pro? (The standard version is already very good).
Jun 22 2009 at 11:59pm Copy Link

Oleg Smirnov It's compatible with Windows 7 (all versions) and even displays progress in taskbar.

Currently you can manage file list and favorite target folders in TeraCopy Pro. Also free version can be used by home users and non-profit organizations only.

Cannot reproduce this bug yet. Please send generated bug report if it happens.

"Is this a personal license?"
Yes, a registered copy may be used exclusively on one or more computers, or used non-simultaneously by multiple people, but not both.

Frank Stephens OK, I tried a couple of simple tests (repeatedly, to minimize caching differences), on the same drive. Performance might be different using different source and destination drives. Copying 125 files totalling about 100 MB took the same amount of time using Vista Explorer, RichCopy, and TeraCopy. Copying a single 3GB file, TeraCopy only took about 3/4 the time of Vista Explorer. However, TeraCopy and RichCopy don't support alternate data streams.

The status of these reports and fixes where are available are also shown.

If fixes or feedback seems to be slow to appear, it may be because the developer has a new pet project - http://www.maverickgps.com/

Hopefully the outstanding issues can be addressed soon.

I experienced some issues with v2.0x with very large file transfers (mirroring hundreds of backup files between 20mb - 20gb each) that may or may not have been due to a bug in TeraCopy, but on the whole, for everyday use this app is great at what it does and I hope Jeff continues to work on it. Michael R Is it possible with your software to copy one (or more) complete directory with all it's objects/dirs inside and just go away and let TeraCopy work alone and continue copying all files it could; in case of an error (e.g. CD-Read-Error) or question (e.g. overwrite old file y/n?) - and that's the important part of the question - it should just skip this file and continue . So when I'm coming back all files, which could be copied, were copied and for those that made problems I can now decide what to do... Opposite to that the normal behaviour of windows is, that as soon as a question arises the whole copy-process is stopped until the user answer this question and only than copying is continued. This is the most annoying part when copying: Just have to babysit the system in case a question arises... Is there an option, which allows to preset what to do with a only partially copied file (e.g. from a read-.error): delete the erroneous destination file or let it stand?

STE Fan @ Michael R (Visitor) I have the same question. I want to setup my copy-settings (overwrite smaller/older, etc) click an start and go away. When i come back i want to have the work done and see an dialog only (kind of log) whit files which doesn't could be copied, and why they can't. Maybe with an option to say "try once again" or like that. Then i can decide if it's ok to don't copy the left over files or think about an workaround.  TIA for an answer. STE Fan

disenchanted Hi,

I bought a copy last time and it has really been helpful.

Very handy application.

I have a few questions regarding today's offer, as I am looking to buy at least 1 more license:

1. I probably missed the answer to this question, on your website, but.......what is the licensing on this?

a. Is it 1 license on 1 computer?

b. Or is it 1 license to 1 person [and that 1 person can use it on his desktop and laptop]?

2.  Is the portable version available on today's sale?

a. Is the portable version compliant with other "portable apps"?

b. Or is it like a U3 portable type of program?

c. Can it be added to a jumpdrive with portable apps installed on it, without any problems?

Thanks in advance.

Gerard Balagué I don't recommend buying this software, I did sometime ago and the development is dead, there are bugs that aren't fixed.

and he closed comments so he doesn't have to stand them, and we, users, realize the problems.

Louis H @Gerard

Thank you. I do note the last update was back in January and from the comments I read it does seem folks are having problems that do not appear to have been fixed or responded to. Based on this I think I will pass on this one, use the free version for now, and will keep a watchful eye for future developments.

thanks again for the heads up - such things are very helpful in deciding which products to take a chance with and which ones to wait and see with.

Roger Thomasson Folks, please keep your comments on the adult side of mature.  And remember, participation in this comment forum is at the sole discretion of the vendor.  If a vendor doesn't immediately answer your question -- please check the product website the same way a full-price-paying customer would.  If you still can't find the info you're looking for, feel free to send us an email and we'll contact the vendor and post his or her response.    But please, do your diligence as a consumer.  Getting a direct response from a developer, product designer, or manufacturer in any industry is a luxury, not a right.  We feel fortunate to be able to offer that luxury for most of our promotions.  But our vendors are very busy, and usually the answer you're looking for is only a couple of clicks away.  If you'd like to respond, feel free to email me personally at roger (at) iconico (dot) com.  But please keep this board clear for constructive discussion of TeraCopy.   -r

Oleg Smirnov "I want to setup my copy-settings (overwrite smaller/older, etc) click an start and go away." This is the way TeraCopy was designed: start the process, click on Clear button after it finished, and see only problem files. If you decide to try again, just click Copy/Move button. Select "Skip All/Overwrite" option beforehand if you need uninterrupted copy.

Yes, also multiple people can use it on a single computer, but not both.

2. Is the portable version available on today's sale?

Yes, you can register any version with the license key. Portable version has PortableApps compatible installer and can be upgraded to latest version by copying exe file from non-portable version.

Ralf Höhne Terra Copy is a great copy and move utility. I use the free version for private use. I only miss one feature:

Moving files:

I often have to move a great number of files from one to another directory. Many of the folders and files already exist in the destinantion directory. With this version of Terra Copy I have only the possibility to scip the existing files and only can decide manually file by file wether the existing file shall be overridden or not. This is a lot of work if you have to copy or to move thousands of files.

In my opinion it would be usefull, if Terra Copy can decide itself thru an integrated option (upon the file attributes) wether an existing file shall be overridden or not.

For example:
date: override existing file if older or newer
length: override existing file if larger or smaller
etc.

Hopefully such an option is not only useful in my opion and will be intergrated in a later version.

But it's realy a great and also very fast utility. I like to use it.

Best regards
Ralf Höhne, Bad Oldesloe/West Germany

H: h. hallo, I've the following question: tera copy seems to be a useful piece of software, but one feature I reallay miss is the ability to copy files with the same name in one folder and tera copy automatically renaming the files e.g. 3x a.txt --Y a.txt, a1.txt, a2.txt,... you already have implemented the renaming function when moving files with the same name to one folder, but unfortunately you don't offer a renaming function when copying files. Will you implement this feature in the future ?(using google, one can see, that many other people are looking for a software that has the above function) it really would be fine ig the renaming while copying function would be available at least in the pro version - and it would be an important argument for buying your software thank you for considering the feature request and answering soonly in advance with kind regards H.H.

disenchanted This is one of my most used applications on my pc and netbook.

It is so neat to have a utility that works well consistently .

Prior to it I had used Xcopy and it's switches.
But as soon as one file had an access denied error, then XCopy would crap out.

Teracopy notes the file(s) that might not has transferred, but keeps right on going.

The most loved feature is that it lets you know ahead of time, if the destination device has enough room to move/copy the files that you are asking it to transfer.
If not, it tells you exactly how much free space is required, before the transfer can be done.

Great utility.

I don't understand what advantage this program offers over that method although I see over 300 folks have registered an interest in wanting this program, so what am I not understanding ?

Thanks

Carl Lum I've owned TeraCopy Pro for some time now and the app works great. My only caution is that support from the author is not very good. I had one issue--I logged it into their bug tracking system--waited several weeks. I logged the issue again and waited a few more weeks. I finally gave up after logging it a third time. I noticed the author had a Skype account, so I added him and sent a message--no response. Many weeks later, the author contacted me via Skype. Turns out this was an issue he could not resolve. I am use to 1-2 day responses from the vendors of all the other smaller apps I use. This was quite a disappointment.

John H I regret not having purchased this in the past. Dragging and dropping in Windows is very unreliable and offers no information if the copy chokes and quits.

So what if this is still in Beta. There are some people in the world that take the effort to do things right the first time. Then I think some programmers try to justify their existence by adding bloated features to programs that worked great in the beginning.

The portable version loaded up nicely through my portable apps console that is installed in my Dropbox.

It just copied 10GB to my USB3 external hard drive in the past 10 minutes. Much much faster than my backup program.

I bought Direct Folders off this company back when I bought a Vista computer and was very thankful for that simple little program.

With Code Sector products, there is no more support for Windows programs, all the latest updates are for software running with Android OS.
Many of their Windows software aren't updated since several years.

I know what I say, I have purchased two products from them (JetStart Pro and Direct Folders).
These two products have some serious bugs since long time but any of them is resolved...

About Direct Folders :
Try to save a file via 'save as' command in the contextual menu of Google Chrome with Direct folders installed on your computer and you will understood what I means.

IMHO this app rocks! Very useful, clean, small footprint... Please don't complain so much. Many programs go unupdated for months too. As far as it works fine with W7 x86/x64 (which it does!) then all is fine for me.
The author stated some time ago that he was focusing on some GPS thing for the Androids. Maybe TeraCopy doesn't need any urgent fixes so that's why he maybe kept the same version for some time. And it wasn't beta. 2.1 was final release and then he threw a beta, but the last stable version was available too.
Also, the licensing is amazing, every app for home users should be that way. ^_^
Kudos for such a useful app! ^_^

H. H. Hallo,
to developer:
1.does now the "rename all" (if filename already exists) work correctly, even when there are many files with the same filename - or is teracopy still buggy??
2. why do you never answer questions even from registered pro users and why did you promise from sept. 2010 in the blog again and again "next month" a new release, but instead of letting people know that there are still difficulties you ignore all questions of customers and closed the topic
People may understand, that there can be unplanned dificulties iwhen programming a software, and may understand that the rnew version is released later, but they won´t understand, that you just ignore any questions / comments!
- it´s really a pity that you make people angry, since the software itselt is (apart from the rename .all bug ) is really useful! and the license-policy is userfriendly

to bdj users:
I bought the software at an earlier bdj-offer.
The support ist norrible = not existing
b u t
nevertheless I didn´t find any other software doing the copying-job as good as teracopy (using version 2.12)- although I tried various other free-and shareware.
That´s the reason why I lastly would recommend buying teracopy
although the behaviour of the developer / support is very bad
with kind regards - but at least the license policy is userfriendly.

Lifetime Upgrades Thank you Jeff Freeman for the software. Though, I think you probably need to update the software more often and probably have a change log available, this software none the less does a great job at what is was designed for.

I was able to copy 7.94 gigabytes of information from my PC's hard drive to an external hard drive just under 5 minutes. After testing, all downloads passed.

I have a pc without dopus and one with dopus.

On the one without, when I drag and drop a file or folder the teracopy

Also, any file path over 255 characters deep errors out and is mentioned in the logfile.

When transferring to external USB 3.0 "green" drives, the drive speed is the limitation. When transferring to 2 external USB 3.0 drives concurrently, USB 3.0 is the limitation, and I'm seeing about 7GB/min just using Windows Explorer in Win7, so I don't need other file-transfer software.

@disenchanted,

to me it sounds that you should give robocopy a try (the one from MS). You can exactly copy everything including timestamps and if using NTFS also the NTFS-Security; the bad thing is that you will need to set up the parameters in batch-file by yourself to be sure to have everything working properly.
(And 'Yes' , it will ignore the 255-limit to a certain degree.)

disenchanted I bought the program about a year or so ago, when it was offered here on Bitsdujour.

Great program for several reasons.

1. Has worked well on several different OS's from XP media center, to XP Pro, Vista, Vista 64, win 7 starter edition and win 7 ultimate 64.

2. The ability for Teracopy to tell me when a destination drive does NOT have enough room to copy all files I selected is great.
It also tell exactly how much more room is needed on the destination disc in order to proceed. So you either clean up some more room on the destination disc and/or choose fewer files to transfer.

3. Once all files have been selected for transfer, you can walk away and return later.;knowing that your copy job will have completed all by itself.

Been very happy with the program so far.

Avi S Hi Jeff,
A couple of questions:
1] Can I perform multiple simultaneous copy operations from one drive to another with Teracopy?
2] Alternatively, if Teracopy is currently in the middle of a long copy operation, can I add something else to the queue, to be performed after the first operation finishes?
3] Someone mentioned that teracopy checks first for available space. However, in my case I often want to *ignore* the issue of available space - specifically, if I am copying a bunch of files to a directory which already includes most of those files, and I am going to simply be doing an "overwrite if different" operation, I don't want teracopy to refuse the operation based on available space. (This is, in my opinion, the major problem with the competing program Supercopier: when I set a large copy operation in progress, supercopier first takes several minutes to compute the required space, and afterward, if there is not enough space, it pops up a dialog asking whether to continue or not. The problem is that I can't simply set the copy into operation and walk away - I have to wait for that second dialog. I hope that teracopy has an option to always ignore the available space without having to tell it each time).
4] Does teracopy support move operations as well as copy operations?
Thanks for the info!

SoftCollector Dear Developer,

Thank you for answering my previous queries.

1. I am using TC from inside Directory Opus. Yesterday I had to copy several rather large files from an ftp to my computer. I tried to use TC for this, but pressing the corresponding TC button from inside Opus did not start TC, but the ordinary Opus copy function instead. At the end of the operation the TC window momentarily opened and closed. This happened on several occasions. Does this mean that TC cannot be used for copy operations from ftp? If that is indeed so, could that functionality be added in the foreseeable future?
2. There is a lag time of probably 2.5-3 seconds between clicking on the button from inside Opus and the actual appearance of TC's window. Can that be improved? I am using a fast machine.
3. Other copiers seem to imply that caching copied files can speed up the process - how real is that? Is TC using such techniques?

Kind Regards,
SC

1) Yes.
2) Yes.
3) Just set CheckFreeSpace=0 in config file.
4) Yes.

FastCopy is better for copying millions of files, since it not displays entire filelist (it will require lot of memory in this case). You can download free version and see what's best for you.

Last version of TeraCopy was downloaded about 400 000 times and no one reported real virus, so it's safe.

Avi S @Gonzo, @Eddie
Not long ago I sent a support item to XYplorer asking whether supercopier could be invoked for file copy operations instead of the standard Windows dialog. Their answer was: "sorry but this is not possible". I imagine that the same is true for Teracopy, since both of them use the same mechanism to hook the copy.
On the other hand, I think should all of us XYplorer users should each individually approach the XYplorer people to strongly request that this be fixed. I purchased XYplorer here on this forum some time ago, as I imagine many of us did. It is, otherwise, a really excellent program. But the need to use standard Windows copy dialog is a very severe limitation that undermines much of the usefulness of the program!

Oleg Smirnov If XYplorer don't have any ability to add custom buttons or commands, you need to contact it's developer.

To SoftCollector:

1) Copying files and downloading from FTP is two different things, no plans for implementing it.

2) It's about 2 sec on my Windows machine. Try to disable antivirus for a minute. But the only way to greatly improve loading time of applications is to use SSD drive.

3) If you need to copy hundreds of small files between two drives on the same HDD, it's better to cache all files in RAM first, to reduce HDD heads seek times. This is one of tricks that TeraCopy uses.
Code Sector - Dec 20 2011 at 9:38am Copy Link

Oleg Smirnov To Bennet: TeraCopy don't use any "magical" API. Technically TeraCopy works the same as if you open a doc file with Microsoft Word and then save it to another place.

Sometimes TeraCopy can even reduce load on HDD, see 3) from my answer above.

Files smaller than 10 mb is copied as one piece. You need to try very hard corrupt files this way :) TeraCopy reads files to memory and writes back to disk, Windows reports OK. To to really ensure that file wasn't corrupted due to drive or RAM fault, just click the Verify button to re-read file and compare CRC value.

If it is not the case. Could it be possible to alter the behavior of the TeraCopy interface’s “Shutdown” button to launch a program instead? Which are the required changes in Options.ini to do so?

John Terdik Jeff - thanks for a really great application, I've used the free version for a long time and have been VERY pleased with it. I purchased the PRO version just to provide a little $ support for you.

I really like the additional info TeraCopy provides when there are issues.

Avi S - I've not used XYplorer as a file manager but I do use Zabkat-xplorer² professional 2.0.0.3(Windows XP,Vista,7 File Explorer Replacement) 64bit (I also use the 32 bit on my 32 bit system) and when I copy it does use TeraCopy.

I quickly looked at the XYployer website and it appears to have a lot of the function that is in xplorer² but I cannot state for sure. I've been super pleased with xplorer² and currently see no need to switch.

Eddie Tex @John,

I have both xplorer2 and XYplorer. Comparison between the two tools came up quite a bit when XY went on sale here on BDJ.

I prefer the interface on XY over x2 and the licensing model is definitely favorable as well (lifetime updates), but I have found that in various ways, x2 seems better integrated into the OS.

With all due respect, you said you previously devoted more time to your android apps as they were more profitable. "Best seller" is not the same as "most profitable".

Please clarify the current state of affairs as I am confused.

John Terdik Eddie Tex - tks for the info on XY, I just went through the comments on BDJ and may give it a shot when it becomes available on BDJ again.

BTW x2 has a lifetime license for $30 (US). By no means do I use much of the power in x2 but looking at XY I do like the color coding. if this is available in x2 I don't know how to set it up. The help manual sorta blows me away.

I'm one of those dumb users that if I cannot figure it out in a few minutes and the help file does not have moving pictures :) I'm lost.

Patricia Lange John Terdik - I've used xplorer2 for MANY years and also haven't mastered (or found) all of its power. When I come across something I can't figure out, though, I post a question on the users' forum and rarely have to wait long for an answer. Unlike many such forums, the developer has a daily presence there and frequently responds himself.

I tried out Teracopy and couldn't figure out how to queue sets of files going both from different folders and to different folders. When I searched help, I found nothing that clarified this, so after sending some files to the wrong place I uninstalled it. I can do this already with xplorer2, but was hoping Teracopy might reduce the number and length of "not respondings" that invariably arise whenever I try to do anything OTHER than move files.

Oleg Smirnov J L, you can edit PowerOff.cmd, TeraCopy will run it if you enable 'Shutdown' option.

DrTeeth, last year we were focused on Android apps, currently I've some ideas for TeraCopy and recently released version of Delphi allows me to implement it. Priorities are changing, but we'll never drop development of programs that are popular and profitable.

Shay Hardin I have a question and would appreciate it so much if someone knows the answer because it's really important.

I have been moving data from a 1.5 TB hard drive to another due to the drive beginning to fail, for the past few days using the free version of TeraCopy. The source drive has been running from a USB 2.0 external because when I put it in my computer on the SATA port, it was not acting correctly, it kept refreshing itself and my transfers would get interrupted. Not wanting to take any chances I hooked it back up to the USB 2.0 external where it works and I am able to transfer the data off of it.

But it is EXTREMELY slow in the data trasnfer! I have several TeraCopy windows running to help capture as much as I can simultaneously which may be slowing it down but I'm trying to hurry so....

I ordered a USB 3.0 external and a USB 3.0 PCI card from Newegg.com and it will be in today. My question is this: Is there any way to stop the current TeraCopy data transfers safely without corrupting or losing the original source data so that I can turn off the computer, put in the PCI USB 3.0 card and put the source drive in the USB 3.0 enclosure and resume the transfer in hopes that it will run a lot faster?

The current transfer rates range from 205Kbs to 85Kbs.

I wanted to ask if there is a chance that this offer will be back on BTJ in the near future as there are almost 500 people interested in this deal.

SoftCollector I bought this on bitsdujour in 2011 and for the two years that followed there have been other promotions of the title here as well, but no noticeable software development. I have to ask: does the producer of TeraCopy intend to put time into developing it further, releasing new versions, etc., or is he/she just going to sell the old version?

g harris Agreed w/ SoftCollector - I love TeraCopy & want to support further dev w/ a couple purchases for friends, but are we still at 2.27/2.3 beta 2 ?

and has the 64-bit version been fixed for its "bug" of seeming to stall/hang near 100 % completion ? -- or is that the progress bar is just "lying",

and would make for happier users if it crept along more slowly --
no one likes the progress bar deception-dashed expectations thingy.

Otherwise, again, TeraCopy is the 1st part of kit that I install after the OS itself - ESSENTIAL ! and best of luck to the devs ~

SoftCollector 1. Thank you, Oleg for releasing a new version of the product!
2. Also, thank you for a more relaxed license policy allowing users to install the product on all their computers.
3. The way I understand the fine print – a single user does not need a second license – is that correct?
4. As a DO user I would like to see some kind of automated integration in DO, if possible.
5. Also, support of copy/move operations to Android devices should be a priority at this point.

Donald Hellen You mentioned that all future updates are free. Does that cover version upgrades as well? I just bought the program using today's special deal here to support your development of the program. I've used the free version for a while and like it.

As for the progress bar, I agree with the previous comments that you can't trust the progress bar. That said, I don't know that you can trust ANY program's progress bar. Is this because these progress bars (usually for files copied) are counting the number of files copied instead of the total file sizes combined in the progress bar? If that's the case, is it easy, or even possible, to make them more accurate?

Thanks!!!

Portable version is inside the same installer. Actually you can just copy TeraCopy folder on a flash drive and create an empty file 'Portable' inside.

Just check our blog, not new features in this version, just some bug fixes.

@Donald
TC shows progress bars based on total file sizes read and written. Usually it's fairly accurate. Stalling at the end can be due to removing empty folders or flushing OS cache (if used). Check a log window at the bottom for a possible reason.

About updates: you pay once and never pay again.

And... is there somewhere on your website that discusses how your program integrates with DirOpus?

Peter C1 G'day Oleg,

I have happily owned a Pro license(s) for a few years now and have one or two questions about the development of TeraCopy Pro.

Perhaps it is my computer but I have often found it takes anything from a few seconds to over one minute for the program to appear and begin the process that I had first initiated through context menu links.

With the slowness or time delay in mind - and I'm not sure if the following is at even possible, but:

1. Have you considered creating a TeraCopy Pro Service that would keep the TeraCopy engine always 'at the ready', just waiting for the User to command it and then it immediately springs to life and copies or moves files?

2. Have you considered offering other formats instead of CRC

3. Could you consider creating an official set of scripts and icons for integration with XYplorer file manager?

-----

By the way Oleg, welcome to OZ. We're a friendly enough melting pot and many would consider us to be the unofficial 51st state of the US of A (although we have much higher rates of pay and we have a reasonably tight control of firearms) and a lot of other benefits too, for example for most of the last 4 years our monetary exchange rates have been even better than America's.

With the userfriendly policy (licensed per user, all pcs, no online actvation, no hardware footprint) I´d consider it as a no-brainer. I´ve tried several other copy-tools, but still didn´t find another one doing a better job. I'd appreciate this a lot, cause using the user script function for teracopy in xyplorer is possible but not as easy as drag and drop from one tab to another would be.

By the way I could not wait for the offer to come so I already purchased some weeks ago without discount, which I do not regret by any means. I am glad that you keep on updating the product. Thank you!

garrett james Tried it against windows explorer, xyplorer, x2plorer and certainly TeraCopy is not faster...slower in some cases...

HOWEVER...it seems to be exceedingly smart and robust. It is really GREAT for jobs with many folders, many files It seems to do a lot of its work up front, and easily and intuitively allows to tell it ahead of time to only update files which have been modified. It will skip files it can not deal with and revisit in the end..

SO BOTTOM LINE... I LOVE IT SINCE TERACOPY ALLOWS FOR BASICALLY UNATTENDED COPYING...much less babysitting or coming back after a couple of hours and finding your copying stopped 5 minutes into it. I am definintely picking up the pro copy... even better since it licensing is per user and not per machine. At roughly $3 per pc that i have, i saved that much in time and AGGRAVATION just testing out the Trial.

disenchanted I am looking forward to getting a couple more copies at the upcoming sale.

Years ago I used Xcopy and then RichCopy.
Then someone told me about Teacopy.
I bought it the last time it was offered and it is the best copy program I've used.

When problem with Xcopy was there was no error codes or logging to tell you what copied completely and what didn't. Xcopy's every error stopped the copy process.

Teracopy tells you immediately IF any files could not be processed, which ones and why.
Often times copies failed (for some of my files at least) because the path had more than 255 characters. It happened when there were too many levels of sub-directories.

disenchanted @govertz,

It works as a "file copy utility" for several different windows operating systems, such as XP, Vista, Win7 and Win8 (that I know of).

Instead of doing either a basic copy:
-drag-n-drop to copy files or
-highlighting files/folders then clicking "copy" , then clicking a destination folder and right-clicking "paste" then hoping for the best.
You use Teracopy instead.

It tells you the names of files and/or folders that were copied, their individual sizes and if they were successfully copied or not.
Actually it does either a "copy" or "move" of files from one location to another.

It works with local drives, like copying files from the main "C" drive to a flash drive or a second hard drive.

It also works with copying between a local hard drive, CD/DVD or flash drive and a network drive.
Or from one network drive to another network drive.

Pedro Laurent Hello I am long time user of TeraCopy Pro and I wonder when is the next version is going to come out? As I am forced to downgrade to v2.27 because v2.3 stopped to copy most the time in the middle of gigabytes of files or move files and leaves files within sub-folders that weren’t transfer and I always make sure there is no process open using the folders or files. This is a big issue as I sometimes realize I have incomplete transfers and I have to start over wasting time.

Peter Thompson I've tried your Alpha and know its not finished but noticed it doesn't show each file's progress like the current stable version. Is this something that you will change?

I had problems when moving large multiple files in the past and want something so I can see the overall progress as well as the progress of each file.

Would you also consider the ability to compare folders? I use a free program called FreeFileSync and it allows me to take one folder and mirror a specific folder with another, to update one, and to two way copying. The downside is that it doesn't show individual file progress when moving multiple files.

Andy T @Tim :: Yes it works portably. That's the way I use it most. In fact the license is very generous. One machine many users OR one user many machines.

The last time I updated and installed it gave the option to make a portable version that I then copied to my usb stick.

I can recommend this software having used it since v1 about 10yrs ago and I registered many years back with a BitsDuJour offer. Registration for life and it still works. Used to use speedcopy as well but found Teracopy more reliable and has a nice check option - comforting if you are moving files prior to wiping the disk or similar.

Robert Crombie HI,
I will take today's offer, HOWEVER Pedro's post worries me.
I intend to copy large files (70GB)

I currently have the free version 2.27
Which version are we purchasing today ?
If it is the version that Pedro says is flaky with large files ?
Will installing it remove my 2.27 version ?
If I purchase today, and do not install yet (which depends on your answer to my post) will I still be eligible for the free upgrade, when a more reliable version is released.

Thanks,
Rob

Joe McCormick I am using the trial version of TeraCopy. I transferred some files using PowerDesk Pro 9. A small window popped up asking if I wanted to use TeraCopy or Explorer. I chose TeraCopy. It transferred the files quickly with no problems showing the TeraCopy box.
It also did the same thing using xplorer 2 and FreeCommander XE.
With Opus 11, using TeraCopy, it did not show the TeraCopy window even though I chose it in the popup window.
Xyplorer did not give me a choice.

Sputnik @ Robert Crombie

The key you have received should unlock the 2.27 version which is actually installed on your computer, and it should also unlock the 2.3 version or any future version of TeraCopy, because you have bought a lifetime licence which allows you to unlock any past, present or future version of the software.

Also, even if you dont install, unlock and use the software for any laps of time, the key you have received will always unlock any version of the software at any time.

You don't have to worry about the location of the source from which you downloaded the software (US or Europe), because you download exactly the same file from the 2 sources.

If you worry about the possible fact that the version 2.3 may have some problems that version 2.27 possibly doesn't have, you may wait a month or two for the future 3.0 stable version as Oleg Smirnov said in a previous comment.

You were correct, when I pasted the key into my existing 2.27

A couple of questions for you, or others -
1) If I install 2.3 does it leave 2.27 on my system as well ?

2) Which version would you use for copying an important 70GB file across a network (After I image my PC, I would like to be able to make a copy on another PC)
- 2.27
- 2.3
- 3 Beta

I have used the older free versions and found it to be very useful but limited.

H. H. @customers
another advantage of teracopy pro is (using verson 2.3) is, that you can configure it in a kind of way , that when dragging files or folders a slection-menu pops up, which allows to decide, if you want to move the files by teracopy or by explorer or if you want to cancel the operation. Since it easily happens, that one moves a file or folder with the mouse unintentionally this can be of great value, since you have the chance to cancel the unintended dragging.
the feature can bei found under menu - options - "confirm drag and drop"
@vendor
the new features for version 3 seem to be fine, hopefully the development will not take too much time

Cary Adams @Thomas Meyer... Good question. I've tried Teracopy and a whole host of similar programs, and in the end, went back to Windows native transfer (I also use XYplorer and it's built-in xcopy feature.

With Teracopy, and the others, I've always had issues with over the network transfers. Often these bog down and never recover. At least with Windows the transfer rate returns as the available bandwidth recovers. I settled on Fastcopy, but rarely invoke it.

I'd like to buy this offer, but my experience tells me I'll be uninstalling it within a months time. Maybe you have different circumstances.

Sputnik @ Robert Crombie

I have no answer for your question #2.

Concerning your first question : maybe yes, maybe no.

The only way to know is to install a new version and see what happens. You could try to install a new version in a different folder than the one used for the installation of your version 2.27, but nothing tells us what version will be invoked when TeraCopy will be automatically invoked or if you will have different contextual menu entries for each version...

Maybe you should try what I personally do since a couple of years : you should try to work with two different OS installed. These OS may be exactly of the same type (i.e. : Windows 8 64 bits for example) but each of one on its own partition.

The way to proceed is to create a partition for the second OS, make a clone of your actual OS on that new partition (you may use AOMEI Backupper, a free software, to achieve this) and manage the administration of the boot with "EasyBCD", another free software.

When you will boot, you will have the choice to enter in the OS you wish and anything you will do in that particular OS won't affect the other OS.

That's the way I work : a major OS in which I don't do any testing, and a second OS which serve only for testing.

Good luck.

Kenneth Lantier I had the same issue using my paypal account to make purchases on other
vendors websites,
After trying to make it work I finally called the bank to inquire about it.
The bank was flagging thetrascations because that north america state or
foreign country was on there high fraud list.
After verifying the information with them and unlocking those merchants,
they removed those restrictions.
This Is because of the much higher larger hacks into secure systems as well as
the one billion stolen from the last global theft.
So last step call your card issuer.

Mario Trzes This offer is really tempting. As long as I remember I have used Teracopy free.
But I'm using Windows 8.1 last update, and the new windows copy process is fantastic. It's a totally new experience. It is super fast, it handles several copy operations simultaneously, which can be paused individually and other gimmics. From what I could find, Teracopy wouldn't be faster.

Michael Sanderson I just bought the TeraCopy Pro Version yesterday and installed and used it today. I am very pleased with the program. It works very quickly and avoids the hassle of copying/moving files and folders that might have a glitch. TeraCopy just drives on to the end and lets you know which files were problems. A day prior I spent numerous wasted hours trying to copy the same files using the regular windows explorer method and it was truly a PITA. Thank goodness for TeraCopy Pro. I was salvaging an old failing Hard drive and TeraCopy worked very well. I look forward to Version 3.0 and beyond.

TESS273 @dtouch, govertz

If you don't need to copy very large files or a lot of files, Teracopy is useless.

http://roundcube.net/download/

Just try it. This is roundcube install file. It has about 2,500 files and it's size is 18MB.
I use XYplorer, Total commander, Directory OPUS.

In the test of copying files,
The winner is Total commander and Teracopy. Directory OPUS is poor.

Total commander=Teracopy >> Windows default>> XYplorer >>>>> Directory OPUS

Windows 8.1 64bit
CPU: CORE i7 4500U
RAM: 8G
HDD: WD 1T with 16G SSD

Total Commander: 8.51a 64bit
XYplorer: 14.80.0220
Directory OPUS: 11.12 x64

All of the programs are commercial. Thanks.

While I have a license code, I don't see how to access an interface that isn't for building a list of files to move. I'm now wondering, is the interface limited because it is an "Alpha" release?

Zach User I see the new version (3.0 alpha 5), requires an operating system (OS) of VISTA and newer. Why have you moved on from the older OSs that some of us still use?

Is it because of a technical barrier or you chose not to support older OSs because there's either no demand or just don't want to anymore because maybe resolving a problem with these older OSs are more problematic for you? Haha

I was on the verge of getting this, until I saw you needed VISTA or newer to use the new version(I do use a newer OS as well, but I don't really see much of an improvement over stock file handler on 7 or even 10). Tera Copy is definitely an improvement over stock 2k/XP file handler. I wonder if there exist a version for even older OSs like the 9x ones, including ME, not that I still use them?

Oleg Smirnov Any particular reason why you still using 14 years old system?

"After 12 years, support for Windows XP ended April 8, 2014. There will be no more security updates or technical support for the Windows XP operating system. It is very important that customers and partners migrate to a modern operating system such as Windows 8.1. Customers moving to a modern operating system will benefit from dramatically enhanced security, broad device choice for a mobile workforce, higher user productivity, and a lower total cost of ownership through improved management capabilities."

Zach User Uh, yes; compatibility with older hardware and software - such as programs that haven't been updated or have been abandoned for a while and thus no support for VISTA or newer OS(and some actually won't run in the newer systems - just throws an error even with right-clicking and setting compatibility mode to XP).

That and why change if it ain't broke?

Yes, XP(both 32-bit and 64-bit) support(minus POS Ready 2009), did indeed end on April the 8th, 2014 - but so long as you don't go on dodgy sites or do dodgy stuff - it should be fine; just like some people have survived without having an AV or any sort of virus/malware scanner(s) installed.

But since I'm more cautious and rather be pro-active than not, I do have AV and malware scanners at the ready so they should help prolong XP's security.

Oleg Smirnov Can you use a virtual machine just for these applications? What's your plan of actions for next 5-10 years?

Version 3 uses DirectDraw and some functions that aren't available in XP. Sorry, but we decided to make a better application for 95% of users.

Frank McGowan I've been using the free version of TC for some time, and only have one complaint. When copying several gigs of small files (30k or thereabouts... i.e MP3 files mostly) it often loses its way and just stops. It feels like it gets lost in its own buffers. It doesn't crash the machine or anything drastic, but just stops. I will get the pro version if this bug has been fixed... can you advise me please?

Robert Crombie This page says -
" Platforms: Windows 2000, Me, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 - both 32 and 64 bit"
Yet I see comments above indicating that v3 cannot handle XP ?
I will be using XP as my main PC for a few more years (easier networking, My VB6 IDE works best in XP, ETC)
I have v2.3 Pro.
I could not see any link or spot to purchase v3 at an upgrade price ?
Do you offer upgrade prices ?
Rob
PS If v3 does not work in XP, I will not be upgrading.

Zach User @ Oleg Smirnov

I could, but it just doesn't feel the same(Doesn't give direct hardware access, only emulates as far as I know), + you still can't run v3.0 within the virtual system anyways as it requires VISTA or newer. You would only be able to run it on the host OS....so what happens when I want to use the new TeraCopy within the Virtual system for whatever reasons? I can't obviously....

As for the next 5 to 10 years, I'm sure my XP machine(s) will run fine(I've even heard that some people are still chugging along with their windows 98 machine on the internet! I've yet to hear anyone still running anything older than that that's also connected to the net) so long as I don't catch anything nasty on the way. If I no longer require its services(for whatever reasons), and or I do catch something nasty(like hardware failure or virus/malware) and if I can't fix it, then an upgrade would be fit with whatever new technology they have in 5 to 10 years time.

I see, so it is a technical barrier - that's unfortunate. Well if you can please fix the remaining bugs/glitches in v2.3(and one of them is what Frank McGowan has described that I've also encountered), that would make me and the other 5% of users who are still on XP(32-bit/64-bit) and 2k OSs happy. ?

@ Robert Crombie

Those requirements are probably for the older 2.3 version....luckily I clicked on trial to see what there was to test out and found out there was two versions, one that still supports 2k/XP users and the other VISTA and newer users.

There's no upgrade price, apparently you can still carry over your registration key from your 2.3 install to the newer 3.0 version. But you'll need to upgrade your XP system to VISTA or newer to use that new version... So if you already have it, you don't need to buy it again(unless Code Sector changes this), just need to upgrade to VISTA or newer to use the newer version.

Robert Crombie BitsDuJour,
It may help potential buyers to know what version they/you are selling.
Up until 15 minutes ago, I would have said version 3.
But after 15 minutes of study of this page, and the author's site, I reckon you are selling Version 2.3
If I am correct then you should clarify that.
If there are other elderly members considering purchasing, they may already have a purchased copy of version 2.3. Thus no need to purchase again.

H. H. @developer
is there a possibility to copy files and folders with teracopy when using virtual machiness (vmware workstation)?
As far as I have tested, - the copying works without problem using windows explorer (win7 ult 64bit), but does not work with tera copy.

@customers
useful utility worth its price,, fair user policy
additionally of great value avoiding unintended moving / dragging of files and folders (when havint choosen to ask if using explorer or tera copy), since than one has the chance to cancel the unintended copying or moving process

Michael User I, too, just bought it and cannot get the license to activate the Pro version.

In version 3 beta on the download page, there is no place to insert the license key once installed. (So I uninstalled it.) In version 2.3, once installed, there is a field for the license code, but after I put it in and click OK, it does nothing. I hope the vendor resolves this soon. I am pretty sure it must be an oversight. It looks like a great little program.

Michael R. How does TC handle symbolic-link-directories when copying?
(These directories are only virtually inside the directory which is about to be accessed to, but in reallity somewhere else).

Sometimes the user wishes to copy them as if they were real directories, sometimes he wishes that the link is duplicated.

So, is there an option, how this should be handled?

Petr Hello to TeraCopy Pro support:

I've been using TeraCopy for a few years and am very happy with it. I will likely purchase another license for other PCs, but have some questions please:

(a) Is the version 3.0 stable and tested enough for production use? Or should I stick with the 2.3 version?

(b) I also would like the answers to Michael R.'s questions regarding "symbolic-link-directories".

Thank you.

Jim User I purchased a couple hours ago. I have received a "Welcome to BitsDuJour" email, a Paypal receipt email, and a "BitsDuJour Software Receipt - TeraCopy Pro" email. That's three emails total. I can't find a registration key in any of them.

I only see an order number, and the Paypal Transaction ID.

Please advise, and thank you very much!

Constantin Florea I am sorry about the delay with sending the new registration codes. We are currently going through all purchases which were made before the registration issue was fixed. We need to get new registration keys for those purchases. Once we have all registration codes for all those purchases, we will send them by email to all purchasing customers. We will have this done in the next few hours.

William Dobbs Will TeraCopy work with other file managers such as Directory Opus 10 or PowerDesk Pro?

Rich Ackerson I have an unusual question. I purchased TeraCopy Pro way back in the old days (2007) when it was first released. My order confirmation email includes a download link for version 1.02. However, at that time, it appears a license code was not required (my email includes them for some of your other products (JetStart Pro and Direct Folders) but not for Tera Copy Pro.

My question...
Your Fine Print states "Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for the lifetime of the product." Is my purchase from 2007 covered by this? if so, how do I upgrade? I will be happy to provide a copy of the order email from my original purchase.

Ulrich @William Dobbs: I used TeraCopy in the past with DOpus 9, and then upgraded to version 11, which I use today. It works well in these releases, so I assume that it also works with DOpus 10, just by adding a custom command.
