Julie Smith The Journal has all the best features of a paper journal, with the added features and security of digital. You really CAN have it your way. Trust me, you will LOVE this program!

Why take MY word for it? Umm, well, maybe because I have been writing my journal for 45 years, even longer than I have been alive! ;-)

Albert C. Great app! I bought it a couple of years ago together with all the add-ins and I find it a superb choice! Go for it if you still don't have a journaling program! ^_^

William McKeever Is there any limitation on the size a journal can grow to? I would like to add several pictures to my journal so would like to know how large the journal can be. Also will adding lots of pictures slow down the program at all, or would I be better off creating more than one journal volume in this situation?
Jul 31 2011 at 12:36pm
David Michael William,

The maximum size of a Journal Volume (entry database), is 128 GB--which is almost the same as no limit. =) And if you (somehow) hit that limit, you can have as many Journal Volumes as you want.

A lot of images in one entry will only affect the loading and saving of that entry, not the entire program. If you're only putting 5-10 images in an entry, though, you probably won't notice.even then.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

William McKeever Thank you for the feedback David. Great looking program by the way! Still playing around with the demo and I like it a lot. Trying to figure out how to set up templates right now, seems pretty straight forward though. The help file is laid out very well, which is always a bonus! 128 GB limit will be more than I am likely to ever use in a single journal volume for sure!

Thanks for responding, looking forward to this David.

Tazzie @ David ... could you clarify for me please ... you said the Journal is available here for $25 off (or 50%) and that the discount could be applied to any bundle. Did you mean the actual 50% off applied to any bundle, or 25$ off? Thanks!!!

HJ B This appears to be an application with a good deal of potential. HOWEVER, it seems to me that the author has not provided an adequate manual for it The result, for most people, will be a drawn out learning period, probably with a number of features never used.

1. The help screens run to 175 pages. It would be a substantial improvement if a true manual, in pdf format, were provided.

2. The introductory material that is presently in the help screens does not adequately present an overvue of the program's functions.

3. For me, at least, the functionality of the program is not intuitive, i.e. it does not follow a clear pattern of commands and menus that permits the average user to perform the basic functions on the fly. Instead one must, on a functin by function by fuction basis, laboriously plow through the help screens and may be able to figure out what can be done an how to do it,

4. It seems that the programmer knows the functionality and methods of his program very well and, as he wanted to add some function or method, he did so, probably very effectively. However, he unnecessarily requires the user to work hard to figure out how to use those elements.

5. So, I suggest that he provide a pdf manual, and the first section of the manual should explain the functions and the methods in a concise and logical way, as though to a person who has no previous experience with the program. He may think he has done that, but that is because he is already so familiar with it.

The licensing also is not entirely clear to me. It seems that, for commercial users, there is one license per computer, and for non-commercial users, one license covers up to two computers. There is a provision that permits networking of the Journal data. Does a single license permit that data to be shared by only one or two computers, as previously noted? A family may have three or more computer devices. Does that mean they must purchase several licenses even though only one or two computers are being used at any one time?

Thomas O'Duffy I've used the Journal for years - and find it to be a stable, secure and fantastic piece of software.

On the few occassions where I have had questions, David has been very prompt in responding.

My one hope is that sooner or later, he creates a cloud-backed version, so that I can access my notes, securely via a browser too.
Aug 1 2011 at 12:16pm
HJ B Thomas,

If you have been using the program for years, you have been growing with it as it has grown. People who come to it for the first time are at risk of being overwhelmed in the absence of a good manual intended for the new user.
Aug 1 2011 at 1:20pm
David Michael HJ B,

Thank you for your interest in The Journal!

A PDF version of the online help is available:
http://www.davidrm.com/do...manual.pdf

The Journal tries to get you started on a simple journal or diary as quickly as possible, which is what most people are interested in. All the other bells-and-whistles are kept out of the way, but still within easy reach.

It's impossible to be inuitive to everyone, but I have tried my best. You can email me at support@davidrm.com with questions--or suggestions for how it be more useful to you.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

HJ B David

Thanks for the link,. I actually was sufficiently interested to print the help screens to a pdf. I wrote my note after looking at the results. I continue to think that a good introductory segment that explains the flow of the program would be of substantial benefit to the new user. There is a big difference between a user manual and a technical reference. I also find that the best technical references tend to be repetitious, i.e., each segment can pretty much be understood without having to jump around to the other segments.

Julie Smith HJ B...

Are you referring to some sort of "Quick Start" instructions?
Aug 1 2011 at 2:02pm
HJ B Of course there is a place for quick start instructions. However, most of us find that when we go on quick start mode, there is a lot we may miss out on. I am talking about a good, concise, but flowing summary of what the program can do and what the user ought be aware of in order to effectively plan where he or she is going with it and so that the reference manual can be effectively used to flesh out the details.
Aug 1 2011 at 3:10pm
Thomas O'Duffy HJ B,

In my experience, the journal is very easy to use.

I find the Journal is a really great means to collect notes, from all kinds of places, in a way that makes them easy to find.
I have over 1800 "entries" in my Journal, the longest of which is approx 20,000 words. This must make me a power user.

For core journallying functions (notes / daily entries), I never consulted nor sought out a manual, because a manual never seemed needed. The core functions of the program are laid out in an obvious and intuitve fashion.

On a few occassions when I needed some advanced guidance, I found the help references / how to's on the DavidRM.com website as more than adequate. For example, I recently changed computers, and moving files to a new computer was easy, straightforward and as good as it gets when moving.

So - in my experience - no manual was needed for me.
