Here's something we like - a new approach to time and activity reporting. Because going by the number of time recording programs we've seen lately, it's clearly an ongoing problem.

TimeSnapper is an Automatic Screenshot Journal. It runs in the background of your computer, taking screenshots of your desktop every few seconds all week long.

Then you can play back your day, week, or month just like a movie. Play it at any speed you like, and skip around all you like. Use your screenshot journal to fill out your timesheets, document what you've done, or just keep a running record of your activity and productivity.

Folks, TimeSnapper Professional is currently on sale for $24.95 (down from $39.95) on the TimeSnapper website. However, they've agreed to knock another $12.45 off the price tag just for you!

Frank Stephens This is great software for recording computer activity, keeping track of what options you used, wrote, forms you filled out, error messages, etc. The UI isn't obvious, but it's quite feature-rich once you learn how to use it. TimeSnapper Professional not only records screenshots, but which programs were in use, URLs accessed in browsers, etc. You can sort the data, etc. Non-standard compared to modern UIs, but useful. The coding could be improved, I'd prefer that TimeSnapper used separate threads rather than constantly manipulating it's own process priority, but it works, and its activity isn't noticeable on any halfway decent computer. Lots of options to conserve disk space used. TimeSnapper doesn't perform OCR but it interfaces with Microsoft software which does, although you'd be better off to use a separate, quality OCR application. The snapshots can be encrypted. For programmers, there's an interface to analyze the data and generate reports, etc.

George Butel I have no children in the house, so I don't need any intensive, nanny-type monitoring program, or keylogger, but I am concerned if, were I to allow someone else to use my computer, that that person might, say, visit an XXX-type site or might try to snoop. I wouldn't want a full-featured monitoring program, as one might for a child, but I am wondering if this program can easily be hidden, and called only on demand--in other words, it sounds like your program would provide the right amount of snoopiness without too much. Can the "every few seconds" interval be changed, say, to every 30 seconds or something like that?

Mark Harper Can the tray icon be hidden other than by Windows?

Atli Oddsson The interval can easily be changed from the main screen.

It is not possible to hide the Timesnapper logo from the system tray.

If worried about someone taking a look at the screenshots, you can always use the picture encryption feature, which requires a password to take a look at the pictures.

It is also possible to make TimeSnapper skip snapshots for certain programs or websites.

Frank Stephens I'm a bit disappointed that people view this as a spying tool. There's plenty of software that does that. This is a productivity tool, and as such, it's quite handy. You don't know how useful a utility like this can be until you actually need to review something that you've done or that's happened on your computer, and it's all right there. It can also create an (image) record of what you've done in case of application or Windows crashes, or accidentally hitting the wrong key and wiping out what you've just entered. Also, this is handy in conjunction with a clipboard extender, which can be used to occasionally save what you've typed if your application doesn't.
