Tree Notes

The Trouble With Scribbles

Is your note-taking stuck in the 20th century? Are you still scribbling bits of important information on sticky notes, envelopes, and pieces of scrap paper, only to lose track of them at the most inconvenient time?

If this is you, I urge you to check out the Tree Notes Note Organizer. With Tree Notes you can keep all of your scribbles in electronic form, and organize your notes in a collapsible/expandable tiered tree hierarchy! All of your notes are kept in one place, in one file, but organized so neatly and intuitively you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.

Tree Notes is mapped to a hotkey, so the app will sit quietly in your System Tray until a hot thought hits your brain. When you need it, hit the key, and Tree Notes pops up, ready to record your wisdom. Jot your note, hit the key, and shooop! Tree Notes retreats back to the System Tray.

All of the formatting options that you're used to are here - bold, underline, italics, justification, fonts, and font sizes. Have a particularly fantastic idea? Format it as bold, in red, 26 point Verdana! Go crazy with your note-taking self.

Any of your notes (or all of them) can be exported as plain text, rich text, or HTML. Think about it - with Tree Notes, your thoughts can easily be emailed to someone else, or posted to the internet on your website for the world to see!

Version Alert! Tree Notes has been greatly improved in the latest version. Here's an overview of what's new:

  • Now features 144 tree icons in 4-sizes.
  • Portability! You can now run Tree Notes from a USB thumb-drive.
  • Add attachments to your notes (files, emails, links).
  • Encryption support
  • Insert images into a note!
  • Full Unicode support.
  • Clipboard support. Easily cut, copy, paste notes
  • Better look and feel, more attractive design.
  • Better drag and drop in the tree makes reorganizing notes much easier.
  • And many more...

Gosha Mazov The Aml Pages is much more powerful: the integration with web browsers, fast sticky notes, data filters, plug-ins and many more.

Oliver Steinmetz This software looks a lot more up-to-date than Aml pages - the interface is so much cleaner and user-friendly and most importantly IT'S SIMPLE

Aml Pages might have more features, but a lot of people including me are minimalists and don't want something like Aml Pages that is filled with too many distracting things for day-to-day work.

I've been using Swift-To-Do to organize my notes, but was about to look for alternatives, so I'm very happy that finally there's a similar program with pretty icons that is simple yet powerful enough to organize encrypted notes.

Will get this instead of Aml Pages!

HJ B It seems that:

1. A paste into Tree Notes converts the material into plain text. All formatting is lost, except that usually associated with plain text, and any links imbedded in a word or phrase will also be lost. There does not seem to be anyway to save links that are embedded in a source document.

2. If an actual url is pasted into the main window, the program will recognize what it is and it will function as a link.

3. There is a short quick start guide; however there does not appear to be any other manual or detailed help file.

4. There are two search functions. One permits a search within a note. The other permits a search across multiple notes; however, it does not jump through the different notes, but only reports which notes contain the word or phrase . One must then go to each such note and do a repeated search.

5. The search function does not go across databases and does include attached material.

6. There does not appear to be a specification of what the size limits are for a note or a database.

If I come across a webpage or a webpage segment that I wish to preserve as it appears within a browser, is there a way to do that within this program, or can I only save a link to the page? The difference is significant since web pages change and also sometimes a one only wants a sentence or a paragraph (but with imbedded links and formatting).

The program gives the ability to embed a document. If I embed a document, and then the original is deleted, will I be able to use the embedded document in the same way as I could have used the original?

Can a copy of a database file be sent to other people. If so, will they require this program in order to read it?
Dec 18 2011 at 2:17am
Jiri Novotny Hi HJ B:

Paste does not convert the material into plain-text, unless you turn this in in File - Options - Notes.

The database limit is 4 GB.

To store a web-page: Either copy its contents and paste it into Tree Notes (this can be sometimes messy, so if the web-page supports print view mode, use that), OR, you can save the webpage to MHT archive in your browser and them embed that into Tree Notes note as an attachment.

If you embed an attachment, it is stored in the database, and you do not need the original file anymore. The attachments mechanism is based on the way our Swift To-Do List handles attachments. You can learn more about it here: http://www.dextronet.com/...s-and-more/

Steven Avery Hi Folks,

This is a crowded genre, my favs have been RightNote, TreeDbNotes, Keynote-NF with honorable mention to AmiPages, WhizFolders and AllMyNotes Organizer.

However ...Dextronet has proven their versatility with Swift To-Do, and the biggest problem is getting a fuil, supported, neat program at a nice price. So this should be interesting.

Swift To-Do has been excellent.

Looking at the pic .. the biggest lack is not having a "tab metaphor" which is very helpful for keeping diverse information in one database without overloading the Explorer-style pane. I passed over this lack in Swift To-Do because it clearly had some edges over the To-Do competition. I'll watch the comments here to see if Tree Notes has some good edges that will make up for the tab lack (in addition to the Bits excellent discount aspect. ) compared to the first 4-5 programs above, or if it has another way to economize structure. (Ami has tabs on two edges.) Without the tabs you usually end up with either clutter or a large multiple of distinct database files.

If nothing else, this Bits is helping me to really review the field !

And the big problem is getting a solid program without shelling out $30-50 .. (except Keynotes-NF freeware, which is a tad dated and bland, although good) or having the "Free edition limitations (usually a hassle)" ... so this may well be fine even with the tab question. If everything else works good, and the program is pleasant, a $10 purchase will be forthcoming.

HJ B @Novatny

On my computer, the paste function does not work as you describe. Here is what I found:

1. Copy mixed graphics, links and text from Firefox browser and paste into Treenotes. Result: I get plain text only, regardless of whether I use the mouse, right click options, or ctrl v or ctrel alt v.

2. Paste to Ms Word and the same material looks like it did in the browser. Copy that result from Word and paste it into Treenotes and it looks like it ought, except the links are expanded from the usual embedded link, as follows and the entire thing is an embedded link;

Contributed by @katchicagoe: Leaving Iraq http://www.nytimes.com/in...-iraq.html

From this I can conclude that my system 7 64 computer has some problem or that Tree Notes cannot deal with a copy from Firefox.

Nelson Carvalho (Sorry My English)

I agree with Oliver Steinmetz.

Aml Pages is an excellent product, but it serves different purpose of Tree Notes. I bought the Swift to-do List 7 for a specific job and now I'm buying the Tree Notes to another.

Respecting the need for the work that will be held, the three products are of unquestionable quality.

HJ B HJ B @Novatny
This is a followup to my prior note. I get the same results with Google Chrome as I did with FireFox. However, if I use MS Internet Explorer, formatted text is pasted, except, if it is mixed graphic and text, only the text pastes, and if it is an embedded link, the link is divided into text and url.

In my initial note, I stated there does not appear to be any guide other than the quick start guide , i.e. no pdf or typical help file. Is that correct?

I also note that the search function is limited in various ways. Was that correct? As a footnote to that, the search box that opens to guide the search generally has part of the box hidden on my computer.
Dec 18 2011 at 8:31am
Jiri Novotny Nelson: Thanks for your kind words and support!

HJ B: Thanks for your insights. Support for HTML pasting will be added in the next update. (Internet Explorer, Word, etc copy the text as rich-text (RTF), which is supported now.) The Help file will be added after that. However, even now, the program is VERY easy to use, so there is not much need for it. Also, we provide fast and friendly support.

The only non-obvious thing are notes shortcuts, which are the same as in Swift To-Do List. You can see an overview here: http://www.dextronet.com/...s-overview/

Florian . How do I export my notes to plain text? All I seem to find is export to HTML. Thanks!
Dec 18 2011 at 9:31am
Jiri Novotny Florian: First, select the note. Then click the little green floppy disk icon in the notes formatting toolbar, and select Export To File. The shown window allows Plain Text (TXT) to be selected.

(It is currently not possible to batch-export multiple notes into plain-text)
Dextronet Vendor - Dec 18 2011 at 10:34am
Florian . Thanks, Jiri. That will work for now and I will purchase a license. Do you think you will add batch-export to plain text in the future?
Dec 18 2011 at 10:44am
Jiri Novotny Florian: I can see how that could be useful. However, we would have to probably redesign the export process - as of now, the batch export to HTML is done into a single file. But batch exporting notes into plain text in a single file is not probably what most people want - I suppose it would have to be 1 file per 1 note. I will think about this, and perhaps collect some more feedback. But generally, yeah, we will never stop improving the program :)

Duane Dalian 1. Are there any plans to offer the sync option for Treenotes like the one offered with your other product ToDo-Desklist? Being able to share a single note database between the various computers I use daily would be great.
2. The policy as stated here says the software is licensed per user. (Single user on multiple computers). After I purchased the software in the registration area it says Single user for one computer. As someone who uses several computers but only one at a time am I able to install the software on all four computers as long as I am the only user?
Dec 18 2011 at 12:42pm
Jiri Novotny Hi Duane,

1. Yes, Tree Notes will definitely have Sync feature in the not-so-far future!

2. Tree Notes is actually licensed per user and computer. So there is a mistake in the BDJ Policy box. That said, we will honor what is written there - so YES, you can install it on all four computers, as long as you are the only person using the program.

Steven Avery Hi,

Any possibility of the addition of tabs in the future ?

(Note: I'm a likely 2AM buyer either way.)

I realize that the ease of setting up tabs up depends a lot on the particular programming tools you are using, and it is far from trivial.

Appreciate the discussion about the RTF-HTML questions. I rarely do a mix mode, so for me the existing abilities are reasonable.

On the search, cross-database support would be unusual (this is one reason I like tabs, lessening the need for multiple databases). It does sound like cross-note support could be a bit more elegant, but is sufficient.

Shalom,
Steven
Dec 18 2011 at 6:33pm
Jiri Novotny Steven: Yes, tabs are definitely a possibility. However, it would probably be 1 tab = 1 database. Cross-database search would be possible, too.
Dextronet Vendor - Dec 18 2011 at 11:52pm
Steven Avery Hi,

A tab being equivalent to a database is ok. That is largely how they are naturally used. One Tab might be personal daily notes, another Business stuff, another Bible, etc. The point is that when they are all on the explorer tree, it gets too complex over there. And nobody wants many multiple databases to open/close through a complex process. If you handle that through tabs, ok as long as response time is not bad.

Ok, I went ahead. Mainly because the program is pleasant, the developer is helpful and it may go well with Swift To-Do. I may find it a bit simple for some uses (e.g. one program even has tables and spreadsheets) but generally notes are simply .. notes. Like with Swift To-Do .. crisp design was a major plus. The fact that Swift is a keeper allows a piggy-back approach.

The Bits low $ pain aspect also helps. A lot.

I would like you to consider a "save printout" option. (e.g. these four notes, in that format). That is rare, and is a major need. If you work with notes to print out a daily this and that, you want to be able to save that configuration.
