Artem Mindrov We think the main culprit is not a VPN client you're using but rather specific OpenVPN configuration file. We suspect it modifies your routing table so your default gateway gets overwritten. Tunxten by itself does not change your OpenVPN configs in any way, so this is an expected behavior.

winton guy is it possible to allocate certain applications to certain VPN connections?

say I want thunderbird using the office vpn and explorer using the home vpn.

If this is not possible, I am wondering what the point of this software is? what is the point in having several open vpn going at one time?

Currently it's not possible to customize application-based network settings, mainly because userland applications are not aware of any VPN running, mostly they rely on proxy settings which are not related to VPN in any way. So, to have IE access the internet through your office proxy you have to configure it manually, the same goes with Thunderbird. To autoconfigure them a VPN client would have to know how to change specific application proxy settings. We're not aware of any VPN client which could do that.
However, it's an interesting challenge, maybe we'll address it in future versions of tunXten. Thanks for suggestion!

Whether you will be able to keep your home dsl and simultaneously use certain apps accessing your office resources depends on how these apps are configured. Basically, we have no problem surfing the web using a connection to our provider network while doing some stuff over SSH in different offices around the world using specific VPN connection for each.

winton guy what would be the advantage of having multi vpn sessions at the same time? If I use an app or ie to access my work vpn, I don't want that app accessing the other vpn etc. I'm a little confused

Suppose you have a need to remotely access not one but several offices located in different places around the globe. Local IT department at each office mails you a specific VPN configuration file so at the end of the day you have a bunch of them. Moreover, different offices have different security policies - some of them only grant you SSH access, some might allow FTP or HTTP access to their resources, some only use RDP. So you have to configure your applications to use office-specific settings and so on. With tunXten you can have all of this consolidated in one place so you don't have to fumble in Putty or Terminal Services client for those long-forgotten remote addresses you were going to connect to.

Artem Mindrov What you are talking about sounds more like specifying a proxy server for a particular browser (or any other application, for that matter). This has nothing to do with VPN configuration, where you basically set up a secure tunnel between your workstation and another endpoint in a private network. winton guy whenever i setup a vpn I find that all my connections go through that vpn. they no longer go thru my usual gateway. so if I were to have multiple concurrent vpn then I'm confused as how my applications will play. my thunderbird for example will just use whatever is the default gateway, which will be the current most active one.
sorry if I'm going off track. just want to see what use I can get out of your software.

Here's what we think about using VPN in Windows:
* Is this integrated somehow in Windows (XP, win7) or do I have to get another software-tool?
Yes, Windows XP/Vista/7 has some built-in suppport for VPN connections, in some cases it could be enough for configuring a secure connection. However, many organizations use OpenVPN or Cisco VPN for access to their internal networks. These VPN solutions has more features than Windows built-in one but require using a third-party client software. We believe the best way to get started with OpenVPN-based solution is to try tunXten.
* Is it free?
It depends on the application. Some tools are free (opensource command line OpenVPN client for example), some are commercial. We made tunXten available free of charge as long as you don't want to use advanced configuration.
* Is there a free introduction (perhaps PDF-Manual) to VPN?
Yes, there're articles on the net explainingVPN basics. We can recommend looking up Wikipedia article on VPN (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vpn) or visiting OpenVPN site for more information (http://openvpn.net/index....rview.html).
* What tool would you recommend for use with tunXten?
Basically you don't need any complementary tool for tunXten, however it can depend on the situation. We can only speak for ourselves, and we're making extensive use of Putty the SSH client and Windows built-in Terminal Services client to securely access remote sites over VPN tunnel established by tunXten.

Yes, lifetime upgrades are free.

I believe your question is pretty much the same as the earlier one by Bennet Immanuel. That said, it all depends on how your VPN connection is configured. If it overwrites the gateway settings in the routing table, this leads to the behavior you describe. If, on the contrary, it does not modify any of the previously installed routes, it should not interfere with routing/switching of traffic from the applications.
