I use UltraEdit (from the last BDJ offer) almost daily for maintenance, software & web development, housekeeping, and safely examining questionable files. I like it.

At the very minimum, it's the perfect replacement for Notepad and (some functions of ) Wordpad, but it's also very powerful.

It loads and displays files quickly, in many formats, shows hidden characters, and even lets me edit in hex. It structures files and color codes elements. It is very customizable.

It allows you to select and edit columns, add numeric sequences, etc. I have used it to quickly load gigabyte files and remove the first columns. It's got functions galore, but is easy to use.

Scripting, macros, word/character counts and statistics, word-wrapping, powerful search, etc.

UltraCompare is quite powerful and has nice touches. (Though my comparison tool of choice is Araxis Merge)

I'd really like to have UltraEdit Mobile which is now a part of this offer. Adding UltraEdit to a USB drive really makes a lot of sense.

I am taking a look at this because of its XML editing. It looks nice. However ,a quick question. How well does it deal with large XML documents? Lets say - large files over 1GB. Does it load it relatively fast?

[It's quite annoying having to ask this question for all the programs I'm interested again and again... Why is this license-information not shown automatically? Or at least it should be clear in the moment of buying, i.e. on the order-form.]

Nico Westerdale @Mica I've just tried and the Buy Now button and it appears to work fine, and correctly show the discount.

Everything sold on BitsDuJour falls under the same license agreement as it normally would from the vendor, as you are purchasing direct from the vendor. IDM's license agreement is listed here.

You do make a good point about the license information, and that is something that we could potentially add in to ask vendors as they sign up. We currently optionally ask vendors for their upgrade policy, and we could potentially extend this. If you would like to bring this up in our forum we can try to get this done right.

Can UltraCompare create a patch-file p for two files f1 and f2, ideally an exe-file, which allows the owner of f1 and p to create f2 automatically.

This would be useful for creating updates for files. So the owner of the old file (f1) and the patch-file (p) would be able to create the new file (f2)...

If yes, does this work for directories too? (Some (old) files inside one directories -patch-file-> Up-to-date-files)

If no, do you plan such a feature in the near future?

@Bradley: You can use UltraEdit for large xml files. UltraEdit can handle files in excess of 4GB. Note: To improve the file load time, you will want to optimize your settings for large file editing.

Jon Koerner I heartily second the motion by Mica D for BDJ to always list the most important details of the licensing terms for the software, since these are constantly requested by BDJ users in these comments sections (and sometimes vendor does not provide a timely answer prior to ending of sale).

@Nico - referring us to the vendor website does not always answer the questions, since
(1) they may offer multiple types of licenses, and it may not be clear which one applies to the BDJ offering;
(2) sometimes the vendor extends special licensing terms to BDJ purchasers (e.g., they agree to free update to next major version release, whereas normal license only includes minor revision updates; and etc.)

So the license details that we would like to have routinely listed on the BDJ offer page include:
1. Can it be installed on multiple computers owned by licensee (home PC, laptop PC, work PC) used by one user only?
2. Is it a "Family" license, for use by family members in same household, on >1 computer?
3. What is the term for free updates? (1 year? Lifetime? 90 days?)
4. Which updates will be free (minor point-releases only? Major version release(s)? Only the next upcoming major version release?)
5. Policy/procedure for user to transfer program to a new computer (because sometimes the vendor does Not allow this, or makes it extremely cumbersome to do so, or has a procedure which requires contacting the vendor for special permission -- in which case, the user is screwed if the vendor company goes out of business, gets sold, etc.)

Glenn Botts UEStudio also looks interesting, but there doesn't seem to be an option to purchase it with this offer. I looked at the Upgrade button for UEStudio and noticed it mentioning "unlimited upgrades". Is this not an option for new purchases?
