Remotely Share Any USB Peripheral

USBDeviceShare

So you went out and bought yourself a couple of nice USB external backup drives for your home and office, and all of your most important files are stored on them. But what happens when you're sitting at home and you really need to get at your work files, or vice versa? Or what if you're actually at home or work, but you're using a different workstation that doesn't have your precious hard drive plugged into it? Do you physically move yourself to the other machine? Do you lose valuable time waiting until you get home (or back to the office) to access your much-needed files? Or do you get a copy of USB Device Share and never be out of touch with your USB peripherals ever again?

USB Device Share lets you share any USB device remotely over the Internet or via LAN. Just install USB Device Share on the computer that has the USB device plugged into it, and any computer that has the client software installed will be able to access that USB device! Imagine being able to tap into your external hard drive from anywhere! Share that expensive USB scanner with every computer in your office or lab setting! Save loads of money by not buying pricey NAS drives or multiple USB peripherals for multiple workstations! Even better, USB Device Share lets you share an UNLIMITED number of USB devices without the need to install drivers!

Besides being incredibly easy to use, USB Device Share comes with a ton of bells and whistles that make it even more useful. You can configure USB Device Share to automatically share any USB peripheral as soon as its plugged into the host machine. You can deny sharing for specific devices, like keyboards. No matter what I do I can't link any of my PCs on my network. I've allowed all in bound and out bound connections through my firewall for USBDeviceShare but I always get "Failed to connect with server". I've tried both Server Name and Address. Any suggestions?

    Hi Dan,

To make sure that the server machine is accessible over network from the client machine please 'ping' the server address from the client machine.

Open command prompt and run "ping server ip address" (Example: ping 192.168.1.104) and see the result.

This is just to make sure that the connection problem is not with the network.

    Sreejith,

I pinged and can't connect. I assume my provider doesn't allow such a connection or is there some other solution?

    Dan,

Please contact your network administrator or provider to resolve this issue. USBDeviceShare requires direct connectivity between client and server machines.

There's something I've never understood about any of these remote access programs. What if I am working at home and realize I need to access my computer at work -- and it's midnight, and my work computer has been turned off for 7 hours already. Can your software [and others like it] turn on my computer at work so that I can access it? Or must the work computer be on 24/7 for me to access the USB remotely?
  • Apr 7 2010 12:10am
    Sreejith Sreekumar (SysNucleus Vendor)
    Hi Tom,

Remote USB access software cannot automatically turn on the server PC. In your case the work computer must be ON for the devices to be remotely accessed.

    Hi,

My "server" would be a Win 7 64 bit PC; but I want to access it from other PCs that run both 64 & 32 Bit Vista, and 32 bit versions of XP Pro.

Will this work, both over the net, and on my local Windows 7 based LAN?

Also - will you offer an upgrade to USB 3.0?

    Wiz

    Thanks !

    Hi Steve,

USBDeviceShare server and client are interoperable between different versions of Windows (i.e between Win 7 and XP, Vista and XP etc). However the 32bit version of USBDeviceShare (client/server) is not currently interoperable with the 64bit version. We are working on this and hope to get this feature integrated soon.

USB 3.0 support is also in the pipeline.

    Hi Sreejith,

I really would like to buy this but my "server" would be a 32bit Win 7 and my "client" a 64bit Win7. So will this interoperability between 32bit and 64bit definitivly come and probably when?

Will this feature be covered with this buy or do I have to pay an upgrade fee for it?

    Thanks!

    Hi Steve,

Please email me and I will let you know when the 32bit-64bit interoperability is solved. We will also give you a discount at that time, so that you can purchase USBDeviceShare at the same price.

    Hi Sreejith,
the idea is great but once I share my usb disk, cannot see it on the server - only on the client if I connect to it. Do you tink it would be too difficult to fix this bug? Also, do you plan implementing transferring encrypted data between server and clients over the internet?
  • Apr 7 2010 5:41am
    Sreejith Sreekumar (SysNucleus Vendor)
    Hi Peter,

This is not really a bug. This is a limitation of the USB devices and their protocol and is clearly stated in the product help manual. Once the device is shared at the server, it will not be accessible at the server. Data transfer with encryption will be implemented in the next version of the product.

    Sreejith

    Hi Sreejith,

thanks for the info -- regarding the encryption, do you mean the next major or minor version? What the rough time estimate would be? (Before it happens, it\s very dangerous to send private files containing potentially sensitive info over the internet in unencrypted form - hope you are considering a strong algorithm, not just some easy to crack one.) Thank you.

My question is about license counting in two cases. I understand the Server can only be used on one computer per license, and I assume it uses online activation for enforcement. As a commercial developer myself, I understand the need for activation. My two questions are this:

First, as a PC enthusiast who regularly tries new things, I reformat and reinstall my primary PC several times per year. Will I lose the ability to use the Server software, even though I would only be reactivating it on the same hardware? i.e. is it possible to "deactivate" in order to preserve the ability to reinstall it later?

Second, later this year I will be purchasing a new computer, and my current PC will be reformatted and put into a pool of test computers I keep, and would no longer need the Server product. Similar to the first case, would I be able to uninstall/deactivate the license on the old computer in order to install it on the new?

Thanks for your help! I regretted passing up the chance to purchase in October, so I'm excited about this second chance.

    Hi Ronald,

You can activate the sever in the same PC or in a different PC using the same license file without issues.

    Hi Sreejith,

that's a great news, I'll buy it then today and wait those 2 months for the encryption; I suppose because the next major upgrade is coming within less than one year from now, it will be free for today's buyers, am I right?

    Regards,
    Peter
