Honestly, we can't figure out why Microsoft isn't beating down NTWind's door for the rights to include WinSnap in their next Windows update.
After all, WinSnap is so much better -- SO MUCH BETTER -- than the Windows "PrntScrn" utility that we hardly even feel comfortable mentioning them in the same paragraph!
It's tiny size (132kb tiny!) belies it's power and functionality. Standard features let you easily capture non-rectangular windows with customized and transparent backgrounds, apply simple and automatic canvas transformations, add coloring effects and create slick, professional-looking drop shadows. WinSnap supports a variety of image formats and has advanced auto-save features.
In a word...
...Awesome!
Version Alert! Since we last promoted WinSnap, it has moved into version 3.1. The new version adds extensive support for the Windows 7 Taskbar and much more:
I picked up this program last time it was offered on BitsDuJour. All I can say is, "I love this program". It is reasonably priced and makes my life easier. Definitely a great way to make the your computer's "PrintScreen" functionality work the way you want it to.
Does this screen capture software support 'scrolling' capture (or the capture of the entire page, including the area below the first screen?
Please, is this offer for version 3 ? For which versions is this discount license? Also for the next versions? And is this license also valid to use the portable version? Thanks for an answer.
The discount is on WinSnap Personal License ($24.90 value) which includes FREE upgrades to all future versions of WinSnap. So, yes, this offer is for version 3.0 and for the next versions too. You can choose any edition according to your needs: * WinSnap 32-Bit Edition (standard, for all OS) * WinSnap 64-Bit Edition (for XP/Vista x64) * WinSnap Portable Edition (run from USB drives) * WinSnap U3 Edition (portable, for U3 drives only) URL: http://www.ntwind.com/software/winsnap/download.html
2 Barry Kintner No, the current version of WinSnap does not support 'scrolling' capture. It is designed to capture visible windows & objects (Vista UI, multiple application windows, buttons and dialogs). http://images.ntwind.com/winsnap3/winsnap_vs_other.png
Hi Folks, WinSnap has always been a very fine program. Some more expensive screen capture programs are super-sophisticated, a bit on the complex side, some even have an text grabbing component (a special feature which itself has more than one method possible). Some are super-simple, like Purrint. WinSnap has been one of my fav toward the simpler end, and this discount is enuf to play with it the next few days and if still has a nice feel, taket the Bits Du Jour special.. Especially with a lifetime license. ("All future versions"). Especially now that I am comfortable with Notezilla or Stickies as an annotation" method. (You create the sticky before you take the picture and make it any size and color and place on the screen. In a sense this is far simpler than the picture program adding the feature. This is a note for the WinSnap author, since the question comes up on his forum. Oh, good point, WinSnap has a true forum for support, questions, enhancements, always a big plus. I tried Jing for the "quick save to the cloud" screen capture for awhile, and found it reasonably good. (Nice for when you want to place a link on a forum in one-step.. less good for your own indexing and remembering.) Something similar, a cloud interface, would be good for a future WinSnap release. I think the problem is that WinSnap has to make a connection with a vendor, and cloud vendors are not the most stable and reliable creatures of the sky. Shalom, Steven
2 Steven Avery Thanks a lot for your comments here! I'm not sure if I'll be able to maintain an image hosting service in the near future. But there is a way to add "Upload to Flickr" or "Upload to ImageShack.us" commands to the Tools menu: http://timheuer.com/blog/archive/2007/02/20/13993.aspx
I also agree that WinSnap is very high-quality for what it does. NTWind does an excellent job of producing high-quality products, and keeping them up-to-date, especially on Vista, where many utilities fail to function properly. I also particularly like another one of their products, WindowSpace. Those with NVidia graphics cards should note that NVidia only cares about 3D gaming, and fails in other areas, especially basic 2D support. I had to downgrade from the Vista GeForce 185.85 driver to 182.50 because the multi-monitor support was completely broken. You may have problems capturing some DirectX screens, but that's a problem with NVidia's drivers, no other screen capture utility will do any better. If Object capture doesn't function properly, your NVidia driver has flaked out (it does that a lot in many 2D areas), and you'll need to restart Vista.
Thank you for the reply on the scrolling feature - but no comment was made as to whether the 'scrolling' feature will be added.
I got this the last time it was offered on BDJ, and have always been very pleased with it. It does an excellent job, and provides the same features as similar utilities costing much more.
Hi Folks, Thanks Alexander. Just went for the purchase. A perfect example of where Bits Du Jour shines. A little-known yet fine software. Lots of worthy competitors, freeware, paid, donation and even its own "last freeware version". Might get lost in the shuffle, yet with the discount you rethink .. So .. how can you pass by a $12 purchase for a lifetime license for a fine friendly, helpful, useful software ? Then you can give a little support to a small good programming company, you can ask lots of questions on the forums as an active user and you can give feedback and suggestions toward future enhancements. Screen capture is funny, sometimes you may want lots of bells and whistles (the excellent Snagit, Hypersnap and others) and surely image annotation is a nice feature on some occasions, as are scrolling images and, when available, text capture. And more. Maybe in the long run you buy one of the big boys, and go through the learning curve, maybe not. However .. simplicity, clarity, friendliness. Almost all the time that is all I ask. Quick print to the printer or a file or the cloud. Window or full-screen. Clean and crisp. Even Purrint is usually fine, to go to the ultra-simple (only full screen). WinSnap simply offers a very nice balance, it has always been a pleasure to use and I look forward to using more the NTWind software, pleased to be back, I'll look at the other software too. Shalom, Steven Avery
Everything from NTWind gets my recommendation, the developer knows his stuff. WinSnap is simple but can capture things which other capture tools mess up on Vista and higher. It has some effects. For annotation, I recommend the free FastStone Image Viewer (Edit, Draw Board), it supports PNG transparency. You can also load the image back into WinSnap to add effects like reflection after annotation.
DOES IT COME WITH LIFETIME UPDATES?
Yes, it comes with lifetime updates + you can install any edition you want to use (32-bit, 64-bit, portable).
This is a very nice tool, with a number of useful features. I plan to buy, but am concerned about one of the features. I had selected "contour" and then deselected - unfortunately, when selecting a region the object shown in the display window has "rounded corners," which makes it very difficult to precisely locate the cross-hairs on the corners of the object. This doesn't seem to be correct, so I wonder how I get back to "square" regions showing, as opposed to the contour.
@Bob 1) start the Region capture mode 2) right-click the screen to open the context menu 3) select "Rectangle" from the menu (it is the default region shape)
Posting here will also email NTWind Software directly.
