“I'm a writer working on a series of novels, and I'm using ZuluPad to outline them.

Normally I use a combination of Notepad documents and handwritten notes to plan out my writing, and have played around with using wiki software to help in this process in the past. I found, however, that setting up and using an online wiki for this task involved far too much work for the benifit that came from it.

ZuluPad, by contrast, is perfect. As simple and as lightweight as NotePad, but with the wonderful wiki features that tempted me in the past. Minimal setup time, no advanced web dev knowledge, no need for online space (or even a net connection at all, which is nice when you're writing while away from an ethernet cable).

I've got pages for each of my charaters, the major plot points, story arcs and the timeline, and all of them pointing to each other. I can, for example, start with the page for the climax, write down the characters that need to be there for it to work, follow the links to the page for one of those characters, and check the links to previous plot point that involves them and make sure that I can get from there to where they need to be next.

It's also easy to add new details to the outline or change ones that no longer fit the changing story without having to have dozens of seperate .txt files open at the same time, so I can spend more time writing and less time looking for my notes.

Robert Chan Can I insert images in ZuluPad Pro?

M B Looks interesting, but my concern is that on the official forums there is a post asking if the program is essentially dead.

Not sure if pasting links is allowed, but these are from the publishers official forums.

Robert Chan Curious about the Pro version (as I cannot try it) : Does each tab have its own "index"? Or is the "index" the same for all tabs?

Tazzie I am interested, and I appreciate your honesty about the release of a new version. However, I am rather concerned as to where the guarantee on that new version is. Since the last update was 2008 and it is now 2011 and you have no estimate for a new version, how can we know for sure there will be a new version? Is it fair to ask anyone to pay for this right now when there is no guarantee and no recent history to back it up?

Robert Chan Just purchased Zulupad Pro but very disappointed to find that Chinese characters are not displaying correctly in the Pro version. (Chinese characters display correctly in the free version) . Is there something I can do to make it display Chinese correctly?

Jim Shields Tom - You really need some screenshots of the Pro version on your website. In essence there's no demo or trial version of the Pro version (since I gather that it is very different from the free version) and I want to see what it looks like before considering buying it. Others want the same - see Robert's question above.

John H I just purchased the pro version. It looks the same as the free version. The word processing functions are almost the same. except you can underline, bold and highlight text. Also bullets.

You cannot have mixed font sizes within in a page.

All formatting options are done with the control key.

You can insert a picture either by an insert command or pasting from the clipboard. There is no resizing of the picture once inserted, and only one line word wrap to the right of the picture.

Each page is a separate tab. You do have global document search. Of course you can do Wiki linking which is the strength of the program.

The program is a standalone executable, meaning you can run it from a thumb drive, or in my case from an online folder synchronized to both my computers(DropBox). It is also a very light weight and basic program that really does not need a lot of updates.

I was hoping to find a lightweight word processor with tabbed pages. Something between MS Wordpad and Open Office Word Processor. This is not it. This is more between MS Notepad and MS Wordpad.

This appears to be a good Personal Wiki program if you need to insert graphics. There are numerous Wiki Programs out there, all with the very limited text formatting. None could accept pictures like Zulupad.

I'm not sure if I will use this for my research journals due to the limited text size formatting issue. I like to have bold headings and reduce large blocks of text to very small size. I will have to play with the program.

I find the face Icon to be a bit too creepy.

DrTeeth The developer posted in Apr 13 2010 that he has very little time to work on this. With that and no updates since mid-2008, *I* would consider the program dead and though seemingly useful, won't buy it.

There is no trial. There is a free version, and it does not have tabs. In the pro version the tabs work basically as they do in a web browser. You can open links in a new tab if desired.

Rick Edwards Win7 compatible? (I know Vista compatible is more restrictive, so they say, but I've had XP programs work on Vista that DO NOT work on Win7.)
