Mike G WinRAR is my archiving utility of choice for maximizing compression levels, variety of formats, strong encryption and convenient GUI integration. In my experience, RAR attachments are less likely to be blocked by email filters compared to ZIP. Also, there's no annoying adware like you get with some freeware alternatives.

Peter C1 I've got to admit I'd would buy this program in a heart beat because it is pretty much the default web's standard although there are others which do try to emulate none come close.

My browser has a similar program builtin but if i could buy a discounted version ... well count me in.

I do believe it is a genuine lifetime license too.

Pedro Laurent This program is 29 Dollars, Come one people!!! with life time upgrades and support. What else you want for that price??? 29 is a bargain, I would understand if the price was like 99 or 50 Dollars...

Tomasz Lisowski Well, Pedro. In the WinRar license I have never seen a firm statement about it being a lifetime license. I have recently asked WinRar Sales department about it and I got the following in reply:

Hello Tomasz,

Thank you for contacting WinRAR!

It has always been our policy to offer our users all future upgrades and updates at no additional cost when they purchase a license. There is no indication that this policy will change in the near future.

*irrelevant part deleted*

WinRAR licenses are valid for all OS and language versions we currently support. Moreover, home users are allowed to install their single-user license on all machines that are their property. Business customers need a license for each machine / workstation that can access WinRAR.

For your information, the WinRAR EULA (license text) is available online here: http://www.win-rar.com/in...icle_id=27

Should you have any further questions, please let me know.

Kind Regards,
Braden Kohn
WinRAR Sales Team

So, effectively, we rely on WinRar maker to keep his promise, although it seems just verbal, and not written. As such, the policy *might* change anytim ....

Overtkill They've had the free upgrade policy for years. My opinion of them has never wavered as I have yet to see an archiver that out performs WinRAR, and their site and support has always been excellent. Years and Years ago, I used to use WinZip, but got tired of paying for upgrades, and for a utility that lacked a lot of support of other archive formats. WinRAR eliminated both of those issues right away.

I also like it because it can open .ISO files which are used as a CD/DVD imaging format. Not to mention the various formats for opening virtually everything you download including self extracting or archive .exe files. The native .RAR format is also becoming the norm over .zip because of the better compression and CRC data check capabilities.

There are too many reasons to prefer this tool over the others. And its reasonable priced from them as well, though on Bits, it would be an absolute steal if we were to see it. :)

Thanks for reading...

Tomasz Lisowski For accessing .ISO files I am using either Alcohol 120% or a plugin to Total Commander, so this is not a decisive factor for me. I also like WinRar and would buy it at a discounted price, because $29 + VAT is still high in view of freeware competitor, like 7-zip, which is quite on par with its abilities. The advantages of WinRar, like the recovery record and of course the ability to CREATE rar archives :-) are for me worth shelling out some money, so I am looking for an opportunity to seize a license on BdJ.

John Nance I have used this utility for years. I need a new license now! It is great...

Tomasz Lisowski @John Nance: You know, I guess, that as a home user you can use your license on as many computers as you own? So, unless this is for business use, I think you don't need a new license ...

David User This is the greatest of all Rar programs. I would love to have a giveaway of this for a year with the option of buying a lifetime or 3 yr at a discount. I use 7zip and bandzip mostly which are free and great. Winrar would be great to have but needs to be discounted.
