Genie au Travail It seems that Microsoft have hardened their licence policy...

Flo That's really bad. I refuse to have a license tied to a PC and not be abIe to transfer it. I guess I'll stick with Office 2010 for a while longer. Also, Softmaker Office is a great alternative. No, I am not associated with them in any way, just like their product and liberal licensing. Hint hint BDJ, are you listening?

Roger Thomasson @ Flo

We hear you, loud and clear! We've actually been trying to get Softmaker Office on the BDJ roster for quite some time now :)

Daryn Bogart To avoid this issue, people can contact Microsoft & explain that they've had to reformat a hard drive or that their system died and had to purchase a new one & MS will allow the license to be used again on the new machine.

john silver FWIW. Microsoft support asks and find out the user has an OEM version of Windows and they can't get off of the phone soon enough. Ran into similar issues before.

MS just keeps shooting themselves in the foot tying licenses to individual computers via hardware, especially with viable, open software that works just as well from multiple sources out there that doesn't hog up nearly the resources as does MS Office 2010+

Rick Truell That's nice, but I shouldn't have to call up Microsoft every time Windows takes a dump and beg and plead with them to allow me to reinstall software that I bought with my hard-earned money. I don't have to do that with most other software; I just reinstall, activate with my license key and away I go.

Microsoft apparently didn't learn from XP that this hardware-footprint-to-prevent-piracy idiocy just doesn't work...the pirates just bypass the check routines and everybody goes about their merry way. I won't be surprised to see the same thing quickly happening with Office 2013.

Daryn Bogart Rick,

While I agree that it's a pain, MS can't simply allow multiple installations of the software under a single license key due to the rampant piracy going on. Too many people "share" their keys with friends, relatives, etc and while MS is a multi-billion dollar company, they wouldn't be that way if they didn't have restrictions on their software. A 5 minute phone call isn't very difficult if you're taking an hour to reformat a hard drive & reinstall software.

If Office simply has an issue and it's buggy, that doesn't require an uninstall & reinstallation. They include the Repair tool that takes care of that so that a complete reinstallation is unnecessary. Most other softwares don't include that with their software packages for their customers.

I see it this way......if people aren't happy with it, don't buy retail Office 2013. Get Office 365 that ties the license to the user rather than the PC.

DrTeeth @ Daryn and Rick

This is how it should work - and the company I praise is...Microsoft.

Had a retail copy of Win 7 and wanted to upgrade hardware - did not do a fresh install of Win 7 (not necessary). Cutting a looong stroy short, within a space of two weeks I had 5 changes of hardware (CPU, M/B and memory). and activation was a pleasure an not a chore. NEVER had to speak to a human...all done easily and automatically. THAT is how it should be done. All the current office 2013 licence will make people do is visit the Pirate Bay for a 'spare' copy when they cannot transfer their kosher one.
