Various types of paper are practised in primary school. They are classified according to different grounds:

- According to the nature of the language material used, the papers are written on literary themes, on story pictures, on life experiences etc.
- According to the type of text: narrative, descriptive, reasoning and mixed-type compositions.
- Genre: stories, papers, announcements, letters, newspaper articles, reviews, testimonials, etc.
- In terms of style: fiction, journalism, business papers.
- By the place of writing: class and home.
- By the nature of preparatory work: with long preparation, with little preparation and without preparation.

According to the syllabus for the development of speech, all classes are given papers of the story type, but in second grade the papers contain elements of description and in third grade the papers contain elements of reasoning. The work system in each class includes both oral narratives and written papers.

All papers in the primary grades, both oral and written, are written according to a plan. From ready-made plans in the first year, children are led up to a collective paper plan and then to work on them independently. This is an important aim in teaching the expression of thoughts in the different types of compositions.
Preparatory conversation questions are included for the different types of compositions. The main purpose of these questions is to organize the children's impressions and observations, help them to become aware of their life experiences, and determine their attitudes toward the facts which form the subject of the story. If the papers are based on narrative pictures or screen shots, questions are given to clarify their content.
For each oral story and written paper, words are provided, synonyms are suggested and the students use them as they see fit.
