Search and Find Files Faster

v2.1.0.0 for PC  Download Trial
Platforms: Windows Vista or later
DeskRule ScreenshotFiles and Folders Software ScreenshotDeskRule, Files and Folders Software Screenshot

Do you still search for files in your computer using only file names? The end result is always the same – a bunch of files with similar or the same name, and you have to open each one to find the right one. Step up your game with today’s discount software promotion, DeskRule!

DeskRule lets you search and filter files using over 300 file properties, making finding the right item exceptionally easy. With DeskRule, you’ll be able to leverage the flexibility of file attributes to quickly find files by Artist, Author, Tags, Keywords, GPS location, and more!

Search using DeskRule isn’t limited to just your computer. In fact, you can use DeskRule to search mobile phones, cameras, ZIP archives, and virtual folders. You can even use wildcards and regular expressions, combined with Boolean search, to perform amazingly complex searches that deliver results!

Until recently, using DeskRule, you could only find files in the conventional way, say find documents modified in the last month or pictures with 4 stars rating and above. But what if you wanted to check file properties against each other? E.g. find files whose Modification date is older than their Creation date? Now you can do just that with the unique desktop detective search mode.
No doubt this is an impressive search capability, but whom is it for? Unless you are working as a forensic investigator for the FBI, why would anyone need such functionality? Arguably this kind of power isn't for everyday searches, but it could prove useful in many situations that you need to combine file attributes and check their relationship. Here are a few examples off the top of my head:

  • Find photos that were edited since shot:
  • $System.DateModified > $System.Photo.DateTaken + 1
  • Find photos shot at non-standard aspect ratio:
  • $System.Image.VerticalSize / $System.Image.HorizontalSize != 4/3
  • Find files with substantial hidden parallel streams (fishy?)
  • $System.Size + 5KB < $Stock.TotalFileSize"

Please note folks: you can now search your photos using a map, please click here to read more about this.
Trying to decide which version of DeskRule (Lite, Standard) is right for you? Check out the feature comparison matrix and make an informed decision!
Also, the new version 2.01 brings new features for "offline" search as explained here: Offline catalog: Find files in disconnected external storage media

This promotion includes the following:
DeskRule Lite v2.1.0.0 ($19.95)
DeskRule Standard v2.1.0.0 ($39.95)

Egon User This is not to be seen as criticism, I'm perfectly aware of the market situation, and this is a very good offer here.

So: The search for "deskrule outlook" did not get any hit (yet); search tools which include OL searches cost 2 to 3 times the price here; it's obvious though that OL inclusion would make this offer even more appealing.

And: Again, I'm aware of the market, and other search tools don't offer this functionality either, but especially with the pic and audio / video metadata search, an EDIT functionality would be of outstanding value. You either use the file system ("folders") and possibly tags (as I do), or you use the metadata, in some dedicated application (or some do-it-all app for video, audio, pics altogether), and very often, finding is not enough, but BULK changes (i.e. on subsets of the set = on "selections" from "finds") are what you want (instead of one-by-one), and then, problems start, so there is room for a metadata editor of this quality here; the additional programming work might be reasonable?

Oh, and just a question, from the "fine print" here, you could read that ANY update, incl. minor ones, are paid, whilst only help is available for the full length of the major version. ("Upgrades to future versions of the software will require additional payment. Installing a new version may overwrite the existing version and invalidate your license key. Support is provided up to when the next major version is released.") I suppose this is not worded perfectly, but would mean that minor updates are included though? It's really not that obvious, so clarification would be helpful! Thanks!

nikos bozinis @egon, thanks for your feedback. Deskrule is just for files at present, not emails. For the time being upgrades are free, both minor and major, but that's not guaranteed

as for changing metadata en mass, have a look at our other product called xplorer2, which has a similar search engine and allows you to change things too, using ACTIONS > FILE PROPERTIES menu command (something like mass renaming for properties)

Nailesh User I have just bought deskrule lite in Aug 1st week in 19. 9 usd. Is there anyway to upgrade it to Desktule Standard ? As the price is same.
Aug 12 2020 at 5:35am Copy Link
Robert Bull Try before you buy, folks. I don't doubt this does what it says (from the author of xplorer2, after all) and it has features that I haven't seen in any other file finder. But, I found the UI so hard to get to grips with I avoid it. Just me, I suppose.

nikos bozinis @nailesh, send me an email with your old registration information and we'll work something out.

@r bull, soon you can try a vertical search GUI, which you can see here

Dunking @nikos - do you have another source of that alternative GUI image? Everything Facebook is blocked here so whatever you've posted there is unviewable.

M K G Is it possible to purchase a lifetime license through this deal?
Aug 13 2020 at 3:07am Copy Link
fpi fpi Do you plan a multilingual version, with French for example?
And about a free lifetime upgrade plan like for xvplorer?
Finally, do you plan to add "Offline catalog search" in xyplorer?
Thank you!
Aug 13 2020 at 4:56am Copy Link
nikos bozinis @dunking, try the beta version for yourself and you'll see the new mode:

@MKG there is no such option, upgrades are free for the time being

@fpi, offline catalog could one day be added to xplorer2 too, as well as translations for deskrule

M K G Thanks. I have now purchased the program and am right now trying out the virtual view in the beta version.

It seems to be telling me to install IFilters for PDF, although, I have them already installed. Do I need to enter the ifilter path manually?
Aug 13 2020 at 6:11am Copy Link
nikos bozinis if you can search for text in PDFs, you don't need to do anything
zabkat - Aug 13 2020 at 6:57am Copy Link
nikos bozinis MKG, if you cannot see PDF previews, try installing a shell friendly PDF handler like Sumatra PDF. You can even install just the preview handlers if you want to keep your existing PDF program, see here

M K G Thanks nikos, the suggestion worked beautifully. Now I have Acrobat as my default PDF program and can still preview the PDFs in Deskrule using Sumatra.

J W I use and have my files in the cloud. The local drive/folder holds only the names of the files. When searching a local folder for a filename, DeskRule doesn't see the file. Is there a way to get around this?
Aug 13 2020 at 1:35pm Copy Link
nikos bozinis JW, I haven't tested with, but if it has a local filesystem folder with files in it, deskrule should be able to search in it. In deskrule settings (F12 key) make sure "search hidden folders" option is set to YES

Stephen Stimac I want to search for files using meta tags. Is that your "TAGS" parameter?
Aug 14 2020 at 7:17am Copy Link
nikos bozinis I think it's called KEYWORDS (tags)
PS. Sorry it's called TAGS, keywords is the property name for xplorer2!
zabkat - Aug 14 2020 at 9:33am Copy Link
Stephen Stimac I have an image file with the Meta-tag "DSC RX10...". Using the Trial, I searched for Tag = "DSC", but no file was found. Did I do something wrong?

I have 1TB of images, including many family history images, I would like to embed Meta-tag info for each image. I am looking for stand-alone software to search on the meta-tag.

NOTE: I know Lightroom will search by meta-tag, but I don't want to be locked into only using Lightroom.
Aug 14 2020 at 10:04am Copy Link
nikos bozinis do these "tags" appear in windows explorer? if they do, they are searchable with deskrule. If on the other hand it's stored as a proprietary extension that only one program understands then deskrule cannot help you

James Kenney When I tried to buy the standard version, it tried to charge my PayPal account
$28.25 I know this is very late but how can I fix this?
Aug 14 2020 at 11:49pm Copy Link
nikos bozinis the cost is $20 but there are local taxes added on top, and perhaps currency exchange fees, all that extra money goes to your bank and govermnent
zabkat - Aug 14 2020 at 11:58pm Copy Link
James Kenney When I bought xplorer^2 from them, I got charged exactly what the quoted price was.
