Organize Your Files Using Metadata

The more files you accumulate on your hard drive, the more difficult it becomes to keep track of all of them. Sure, you could create new folders to categorize stuff, but eventually that gets out of hand, too! So, when it comes time to find something quickly, you're spending all afternoon checking files and folders, hoping you didn't accidentally delete it.

Detalizer revolutionizes your approach to file management by giving you the ability to use tags and other metadata to sort your files! Instead of placing files into folders, you only have to specify certain criteria, or tags, which will define that file for later retrieval. These tags encompass your own custom attributes (like 'vacation') along with metadata that is embedded into each file, like 'author' for documents, horizontal and vertical dimensions for photos, and so on. Detalizer creates a virtual filesystem in which the same file may appear in several virtual folders without the need to make duplicate copies of it.

When it comes time to look for a particular file, just open Detalizer, which appears as a virtual drive in My Computer. Once there, you can browse through the hierarchical list of virtual folders, or search for an item using a specific keyword. You can even copy and paste the contents of Detalizer's virtual folders easily in Windows Explorer!

Brenda Gann Is there a tutorial for this program? The help file seems to make it more complex than it probably is.

Bob S I use tags in hierarchies (taxonomies) extensively, and this could be a very useful tool.

However, it is difficult to determine from the info provided how one accomplishes the following:
1. Creating a new (sub)node in the hierarchy - for example, Mobile devices - Smart phones - iPhone (3 levels deep)
2. Assigning a tag corresponding to the node
3. Assign multiple tags simultaneously - e.g., Device; Operating System; etc.

Also, does Detalizer automatically extract selected metadata, such as author, title, date, etc? or must the owner fill in all of this info.

The ease/time required to accomplish all of the above will determine whether this is useful or not. If you can explain or show, it would help me and other prospective users evaluate.

Thank you.

Unfortunately, a full-fledged step-by-step guide is not available
yet, but we do our best to provide it as soon as possible.

Bob S:
1. Creating a new (sub)node in the hierarchy - for example, Mobile devices - Smart phones - iPhone (3 levels deep)
Yes, Detalizer supports creating hierarchies of any nesting. User-defined attributes (tags) are created using 'Workspace Navigator' (see http://www.detalizer.com/...evices.png).

Assigning a tag corresponding to the node
To assign attributes (tags), select the required files, and select the desired tag in the context menu.

Assign multiple tags simultaneously - e.g., Device; Operating System; etc.
To simultaneously assign multiple attributes, use 'Attribute Sets' (see 'Workspace Navigator'). Every 'Attribute Set' stores a set of pre-selected attributes. Use the context menu to perform fast assignment (respective items appear after 'Attribute Set' is created).

Also, does Detalizer automatically extract read moreselected metadata, such as author, title, date, etc? or must the owner fill in all of this info.
Detalizer currently allows to automatically extract approximately 80 attributes arranged in subject-matter groups. They can be selected when creating a workspace.

Steve Newport:
Do you plan to make Detalizer compatible with Windows 7?
Yes, the next software release is planned to be Windows 7 compatible.

Brenda Gann I won't be able to purchase the program until I can understand how to use it effectively. I feel that many others are also in this position. I am an advanced user. I note that Bob is also having questions and he seems to be an advanced user.
