No lie, it was only a few years ago when I heard that my mother-in-law, who is a software developer, had just purchased a 1Gb hard drive. I thought the concept was ludicrous. I actually said at the time, "What on earth would anyone ever need a gigabyte of storage for?"

Fast forward to now. As it turns out, my mother-in-law just happened to be very forward-thinking back then, but by today's standards that 1Gb drive wouldn't go very far. Today, I regularly extract video and other media to my hard drive that takes up anywhere from 2Gb to 4Gb per file. PC game installations tip the scales at 4Gb or more, and that's before you factor in any expansion packs.

Storage is pretty cheap now compared to back in the day. As a result, folks are happily filling up their disks knowing that they can always buy a bigger drive when they run out of room.

But here's the problem - if you want to migrate your operating system and applications to a larger drive, you can just go willy nilly copying files from one drive to the other. It just don't work that way!

Sure, it'll look like everything is there, but when you try to turn on your computer, it's just not going to boot. No boot partition. Plus, there's no guarantee that your applications will run correctly.

You have two options. You can copy the boot partition and then dig around in your closet and get every single installation disk for every single one of your applications and spend a nice weekend or two reinstalling everything. Or, you can get yourself a copy of EzMigration Drive Migration Software and get 'er done in minutes.

EzMigration moves the contents of your old hard drive as an image, and creates an exact clone of your drive on the new, larger disk. The app migrates all of your applications and preferences, and, most importantly, your boot partition - so your new drive will boot exactly as your old one did. As the icing on the cake, EzMigration helps you to resize your active partition, ensuring that every bit of your new drive space is available to you.

Life's too short to waste your time manually moving files, reinstalling applications, and resizing partitions. EzMigration gets you up and running with your new drive quickly and easily.

A. Goyal I have always had trouble cloning a disk (complete with OS, data, all parititions) and then installing that into a new hardware (New PC with faster CPU, better video card, bigger harddrive) and system would fail to boot as it's looking for some h/w signature that conflicts with the new hardware. I am running Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.

Similar upgrade with HP computer failed as the OS had embedded serial number of Desktop for HP's support purposes and that did not match signature of the new HP hardware. The system would not boot giving me one line error, "Configuration error, please contact HP for support". Doh..After 4 years, my old HP system is out of warranty and support would cost me $ and the new HP system will "VOID" warranty with this migration plan :(

Most cloning s/w are good for upgrading SAME hardware with a bigger harddrive but not when migrating to a new hardware.

Will this s/w allow me to migrate and find appropriate drivers for video etc as needed allowing me a normal boot?

DrTeeth Similar  freeware (CopyWipe) available from TeraBytes Unlimited. Works quickly and perfectly. @As...what do you expect? If you do that you'd be lucky of the OS did boot. There are easy ways of making it work though...

A. Goyal @Guy: What easy ways are available? I spent days trying to migrate my old s/w, data to new computer and it did not boot. Now I am spending days erasing the cloned drive (1TB, 3  to 7 DOD passes) so I can return the new PC within the 14 day period. Deleting the partition would not erase the data off the cloned drive.  I was hoping to save the time to re-install all the s/w from scratch, albeit I have license keys and diskettes of all s/w except the freebies I got from "". My s/w resides on C and all data on D and backed everyday into the cloud using iDrive ($50/yr service for 150GB of cloud storage/recovery). The only other solution is from Paragon that virtualizes existing PC and migrates this in its entirety to the new PC. Ofcourse it will work as the old PC is now running as a Virtual machine on the new PC. I would love to hear any thoughts from experts on this forum.

Truman Roper Will this allow me to transfer my old XP system to a new laptop which already as VISTA or WIN 7 on it?   How?  Using USB cables?

Will the transferred XP system "stomp"on top of the existing Vista system?

Or does this software work on on only New HDs out of the  box?

Rick Truell Ash, there are a lot of programs around that claim to be able to migrate programs from an old computer to a new just have to look/search for them. In fact, I recall one such program being offered on BdJ just last month. Now, just how well these programs work and how trustworthy they are I don't know...when I reinstall programs on a computer, I do it from scratch. That way, I know it's done right . You might want to check out something called . It's a freeware "system" whose purpose is the automated and unattended installation of a Windows OS and desired user programs, from scratch. Unfortunately for you, they don't fully support Windows 7 just yet (I don't think support is complete yet, anyway), but the system can be used to just install applications. It'll take a while to get everything set up for the first use, but after that, reinstalls will be a breeze...the most work will be installing license keys as programs require them and copying over user data/configurations. And even a lot of that can be automated by unattended using batch files and the freeware program.

Mitchell Kastner I am an attorney and I use Timeslips and the program is incredibly finicky about installation and uninstallation codes. I want to purchase a new computer, but I cannot run the risk that Timeslips won't work. What do you think?
