Log files are probably the best way to get to the root of any network or system issue, but they are also the most cumbersome. Thousands of lines of text all start to look the same after a while, even if you know exactly what you're looking for! Thankfully, there's today's discount software promotion to help you make sense of it all - it's Log File Viewer!

Log File Viewer lets you view, search, filter, and analyze log files up to several gigabytes in size. With Log File Viewer, you won't ever have to subject yourself to poring over thousands of lines of text manually. Instead, just use Log File Viewer to search for keywords or matching patterns, enjoying automatic highlighting of all hits that will cut your work down considerably. And with auto-identification of log file types for proper encoding, plus the ability to create new parsers, there's not a single log file that you can throw at Log File Viewer that can't be handled.

In addition to searching your log files, you can also use Log File Viewer to filter your log file based on one or more conditions, with the ability to save favorite filters and quick access to the last ten conditions used. Best of all, you can create similar types of rules and conditions to govern highlighting!

Here's the kicker - Log File Viewer can do all of this monitoring, filtering, and highlighting for you in real time! Just turn on auto-refresh and watch new contents append to your log file, complete with all current filter and highlighting rules automatically applied. You can select and copy any column or row, or choose to export any lines at text or in CSV format!

Alexander Deliyannis Here's a specific situation: I have a WordPress site running for a couple of years without having installed Google Analytics on it. Would it be possible for Log File Viewer to provide info on number of visits etc., by analysing the available log files? And, if yes, can you give me a tip on accessing those files? Apart for WordPress admin, I have FTP/root access to the site directories.

Caspar Lee @Alexander Deliyannis: Basically, Log File Viewer Standard(LFVS) is a viewer with searching, filtering and highlighting features. It can only do some simple analyzing. The coming professional version(LFVP) will combine with a full pack of analyzing and reporting tools.
But if you only need to check the visits number, you have two choices.
A. Filter:
1. Setup a date/time range.
2. Exclude referrals from your own site.
3. Exclude requests which are not web page or directory.
4. Exclude spiders/bots.

B. Export to CSV
1. Export the log to a CSV file.
2. Use third-part spreadsheet software which supports CSV format to analyze it.

I'm not familiar with WordPress, but I think maybe you need the server logs. If you know what server you're running(apache, nginx, IIS...), you can find the answer easily from google. If you don't know it, please contact your host provider.

Petr Looks like I will need the Professional Edition. When is this being released? Can I participate on your Beta Tester Team? I'd be happy to help you debug the final versions.

What will the Pro version cost?

Suggest you offer both versions hear at Bits.

Caspar Lee @Petr: Thank you, but sorry, I can't tell you it's release date since it's not decided yet. You'll be informed when the project enters the beta stage.
And if you have any suggestions about the feature or functionality, we're very glad to hear from you.

Alexander Deliyannis Caspar, thanks for the straightforward reply, I'll be testing Log File Viewer and hope that it will help in my work. Is it correct to assume that LFV is 'system agnostic', i.e. that it can help view logs from Linux and Windows servers (you mentioned IIS) alike, as long as one has access to the files?

Caspar Lee @Alexander Deliyannis: Yes, LFV is designed for dealing with any text-based format(each record is a single line) log files.

Kimmo Lahtinen So this is not so useful program for Windows events files?

LU Is the lifetime upgrade policy here only for Bitsdujour customers or is this a site policy for the standard version for those who may miss this deal.

Also, will your professional version be covered with the same lifetime upgrade policy?

Thank you

Caspar Lee @Lifetime Upgrades: For both LFVS and LFVP, upgrades to future versions will be free for the lifetime. And users of the standard version can upgrade to professional edition by paying the upgrade fee.
