Very disappointed to see that Bits du Jour is hosting scamware such as DoyleSoft Knowledge Base. This software was on Giveaway of the Day last year and was exposed there as a crude ripoff of a free VB demo by Andrew Park. See http://www.giveawayofthed.../topic/960 for more details. The program has several basic bugs and even a brief trial by Bits du Jour staff would have shown it to be unsuitable for promotion.

Roger Thomasson Kam, I appreciate your diligence here, but want to point out an important fact: DoyleSoft clearly credits Andrew Park for his pioneering work right on the DoyleSoft Knowledge Base About screen. The developer has also just added another thanks to Andrew Park on the download page of the DoyleSoft website. Also, don't forget that a customer who purchases a piece of software can expect much more in terms of service and support than they would via an OpenSource project :-)

Roger, thanks for your reply. I had noticed that the author mentions Andrew Park in the About Box, although without any link to the VB demo code which he has modified. I still maintain that DoyleSoft is a crude ripoff. Take the following assertion found at

'With my background in software development and optimization, I released Version 1 of DoyleSoft Knowledge Base early in 2004. Since then I have been continually improving DoyleSoft Knowledge Base with the help of feedback from an increasing number of enthusiastic users. Six years later, DoyleSoft Knowledge Base is still the world's easiest to use knowledge base, period.'

Even a very cursory trial of the program shows that the author has done very little since 2004 with the code provided by Andrew Park. The program is full of the most basic programming errors, with little or no error checking.

The author's approach appears to be as follows: take some freebie demo code; modify it slightly and add copyright information, then market it all over the internet without any significant development. The whole thing is an insult to shareware.

Nico Westerdale Thanks for your comments on this. As I'm sure you appriciate we do vet and approve all the software that we feature on the website. Many of the submissions that we get are of poor quality and we do decline to run many applications based simply on that.

That said occasionally we get into situations where one application is very similar to another, and although we have a policy of not promoting any direct software clones, cracks, or virus laden malwares, this applicaiton does fall somewhere between the two pillars. The applicaiton appears not to be a direct copy to us, and the work done has added value. I appriciate that you might not agree with us on this particular point, or even that the applicaiton is very good, but the benefit of the doubt should, in our opinion, go to Andrew on this one.
