Find Any Document, Folder, Website... Fast!

RecentX
Tools & Utilities

Imagine being able to snap your fingers and instantly invoke any file, folder, program, or website on your computer system! No more navigating through level after level of hierarchical folders, no more hunting for an executable file stashed in some illogically-named directory. Get whatever you want, whenever you want it. Is this some sort of mystical utopian operating system? No, it's yours, with a little help from RecentX!

RecentX can quickly find any file, folder, program, or website on your computer, and its intelligent system of giving priority to recently accessed items makes it the fastest file search and retrieval system ever!

You don't even need to configure RecentX -- there's no need to feed it your "favorite" files and folders, just install the app and go about your business. RecentX automatically tracks and lists items which are frequently accessed, created, and modified, enabling it to learn which items are most important to you, and hiding everything else. Need to find something? Just start typing, and RecentX will present you with matching items AS YOU TYPE, and will quietly hide itself when you open your selected file, folder, or application!

The latest and greatest version of RecentX is leaner and faster than ever before, with a distinctive look and feel reminiscent of Vista! Hotkey functions let you zip directly to Files, Folders, Programs or Websites! RecentX even lets you define a time limit for recent items.

With RecentX, you can even use tags to group multiple items from different folders together! Plus, you no longer have to find downloaded files to run them -- RecentX gives you immediate access to all downloaded items without any further navigation.

So, say goodbye to Favorites lists in your internet browsers. Bid adieu to fumbling through the Windows Start menu. Shout hasta la vista to having to use My Recent Documents. Today, there's a better way, and that better way is RecentX!

Version 3 improvements include:

  • Application window auto-hides whenever you open a document, folder etc.
  • Fast startup! Doesn't slow down Windows' loading time.
  • Leaner operation! Consumes very little processing power and memory.
  • Tags & Smart Tags let you tag different files/folders/programs/websites so that you can group them for faster access.
  • Remove particular items from RecentX list or filter them based on particular criteria.
  • Designate a separate hotkey for each category (Files, Folders, Programs & Websites) for even faster access.
Written by Derek Lee

Benefits and Features:

  • Find any file or folder on your computer! Preference is given to recent files & folders so that you can access them even faster.
  • No configuration necessary: RecentX automatically tracks and lists items that are frequently accessed, created, and modified.

I have used RecentX v3.xx for about 2 months. I works great but sometimes on slow machine (notebook with vista) it slows down when showing list of web sites or documents - It doesn't apear in old version 2.xx - I think old version worked faster on slower computers.

    Hello everybody,

The new version of RecentX (3.0) has improved by leaps and bounds. You can find (as-you-type) any file or folder on your computer (older version listed only recent items). The looks have improved and it now supports tags & smart tags. Plus the performance have been improved significantly. It also lists history and bookmarks from Firefox, IE, Chrome & Opera.

Please do try the new version.

Also, RecentX order form here will let you add Notezilla (30% off) and PikySuite (50% off) to the shopping cart at discounted price.

have either purchased a license for or have used all four of Conceptworld's programs. I would recommend any one of them highly. They are handsome, efficient, easy to use, and the developer is helpful and responsive. What more could anyone ask? Right now I'm using the older version (2.0) of RecentX. It sits there in a corner of my screen, taking up hardly any room, and never bothers me unless I ask it to. That in itself is a wonder with all the intrusive CPU grabbing applications I've recently been prey to. Then, when I need it, it pops up its pretty face and shows me where I've been, what I'm searching for, then opens it for me - right now - not after a long pause and a lot of humming.

Great price for a great program.

I bought recent x v3 recently and I must say it's better than v2 in the way it can scan all files on your PC. It has been stated in other places that recent x does not accurately log the full browsing history. I have found this to be the case as well. For example, i've been on loads of sites today looking for the cheapest creative zen mozaic mp3 player i could find. Ebay, amazon and all over their site for headphones, alternatives etc etc. Recent x3 shows a total of 3 websites visited today not one of them ebay or amazon. Not even this site. I used firefox 3.0.14

Another comment mentioned by others - no password protection. I too would like to see that as an option.

Support is good however. I've always got a response to any question I asked.

What worries me even more is that many software vendors on bits du jour offer their software for free on another website - including recent x. (7th Nov 2008) .
Today, for example womble are giving away their MPEG wizard DVD software today - the very one I paid for on 3rd September.

This pattern is becoming quite regular. i got a full refund from iprint when I contacted them about their software, another which I bought in good faith. lets see how Rachel at Womble.com responds.

Sorry to be off-topic but why pay for any piece of software that's given away free elsewhere ?

Thank you very much K H. Really encouraging.

    Adrian, thanks for your feedback.

An older version of RecentX was given away free on GOTD because at that time we were planning to launch a new version. This new version will never be given free for next few years. Plus GOTD versions are different. You are not allowed to reinstall and they are supposed to be for personal use only.

Password protection has been added in the new version.

Adrian, RecentX by default shows only essential websites to improve performance. You will need to turn on "Full History" in order to show all websites. Also make sure you haven't set any filters. Please send a separate email to us for further details if you still have problems. We will help.

    Thanks.

Adrian, you're more than welcome to pass on any Bits du Jour offer in the hopes that the software will appear on Giveawayoftheday.com after our mandatory 2 week window. That's a gamble, and one that you're perfectly entitled to take.

However, this falls squarely under the category of "having your cake and eating it to", don't you think?

Bottom line: if we start getting to many refund requests like this (which come directly out of our pocket), we'll be forced to stipulate that vendors wait even longer than 2 weeks to participate in other promotions. Especially in the case of Giveawayoftheday. And that won't be good for anybody!

Please consider the ramifications of your complaint.

    -Roger

    Thanks Gautam,
I've adjusted the settings. It was set for essential history rather than full history. It would be interesting to see how recentx determines what's essential and what's not. Maybe thats a topic for off-line conversation !

I would like to ask whether the program has similar functionality as Copernic Desktop Search in finding also words/phrases within documents - like doc, docx, pdf etc.
  • Sep 17 2009 2:42am
    Gautam Jain (Conceptworld Corporation Vendor)
    Thanks for asking Daniel,

RecentX does not look inside documents. It just finds files/folders/programs/websites by name & address.

What is special about RecentX is that it gets you your favorite files much faster to you and avoids listing all the unnecessary files that you are never going to use. Ofcourse you have any option to see all trivial files too.

The problem with desktop search software is that they list too many results. Which makes them slower. It becomes hard to choose from so many files etc.

What we love about RecentX is its automatic folder tracking system. It will list only the folders that you access. Jumping to any folder is damn easy. Of course you have option to see rest of the folders too.

    Gautam Jain

I need to clarify my position. I have no objection to any software vendor offering a bigger discount elsewhere. My disappointment is that the discount in this case I referred to was 100% and within very short space of time after me paying for it. I have no objection to the vendor giving away an earlier revision of a product in order to encourage more to buy their latest version. This is a common practice. To give their latest product away only two weeks after the BDJ promotion also seems unreasonable (but only just). I would not expect a refund after that and have retracted my request for a refund from Womble.com. I still support them and would still recommend their excellent video software.

    Adrian -

"why pay for any piece of software that's given away free elsewhere ?"

    Paying your $10 or $20:

    * Entitles you to support and bug fixes/updates
    * Permits reinstallation in the case of errors or a rebuild
    * Possibly entitles you to discounts on other programs
    * Supports the developer to improve the software.

With free giveaways like GOTD you get none of that - which is why on many occasions I have upgraded a GOTD version to a supported, upgradable, and less buggy version via BDJ.

If it wasn't for getting a "free install" of the latest version of something I'd never heard of before - I would probably have never tried the software - and likely not considered a purchase from BDJ.

GOTD is a giant carrot - giving users a pain free taste of the best the product has to offer - but usually updates follow, and the carrot starts to become stale - it becomes the "old version". For users who love the software, a purchase becomes an attractive option. BDJ makes that option even more tasty.

As for not promoting the latest version - but an older release, how many car dealers try to sell the latest model to a customer by taking them for a test drive in last years model?

If you purchased some takeaway - but then were invited to a friends place for tea - do you return the takeaway for a refund - because a "free option" has come up?

I'm glad to hear you decided to support Womble, and not insist on a refund because it appeared on GOTD a few weeks after appearing on BDJ. I think you will appreciate the fact also, should you need to reinstall - or when Womble decide to add new features or improve the product, and you are able to upgrade.

That's the difference between purchasing a full license or just getting a free install.

I support both sites, and I think for vendors to exclude one or the other will possibly take themselves off the radar when it comes to my own software purchasing choices.

    Hello JC M,

Upgrade from RecentX v2 to v3 is $19.95

Where as a full license here on 23rd Sep is $17.95. So if you already own RecentX v2, you might as well purchase RecentX v3 from here to same some $$$.

Adrian (& others), we appreciate your participation. But it would be nice if your discussion is only related to RecentX. As it will help other users and also improve our sales.

Jason. - All good points & thanks for sharing your opinion. From my part at least, the topic is best laid to rest now.

Guatam - Apologies to you and your team for hijacking your post. Now lets get back to recentx3. I've set the history to full but still not much success in the history logging. Maybe others may wish to share their experiences, particularly if it's this feature you particularly like. I'll hopefully sort this out, here or outside this review space but it may be beneficial to outline how the history is obtained since many of us may be running history deleters etc. How do these programs impact on the accuracy of recentx3 ?
Does firefox history need to be enabled for example? Is there a link where these answers are readily available ?

Hello-I had bought last time this was offered on Bits as 2.0 version--love this program! I upgraded to 3.0 but was VERY disappointed that my favorite functionality was removed in 3.0. In 2.0 you could change the settings to show websites visited in different periods of time, from the current day to it many weeks worth. In 3.0 it was simply frozan to the last 24 hours or something.

I complained to the developer who was very responsive and said that others had complained that the feature was removed and it would be fixed. They suggested I revert back to 2.0 which I did but 3.0 ran much better.

So, does anyone know if it has been fixed in the version offered here? thanks!

    Gail F,

    Thanks for your feedback.

RecentX has all the history that your browsers have (IE, Firefox, Chrome & Opera).

RecentX shows the last 200 latest items by default. It doesn't restrict by number of hours.

We do realize that it is important to show the results by time. And we will surely launch a new build in couple of months that will show results by time.

Please do give us some time.

This is an excellent programme. Highly recommended.

For those interested in checking an in-depth review , check out the Software Reviews, August 2008, on the NeatNetTricks web-site ( http://www.neatnettricks.com/ ).

I just upgraded to Version 3 , and it really was worth the price -- even though this is a great deal, I still think that I got great value for my investment.

I would recommend that you go for it -- at this price you can't lose, especially as still have time to try it first.

PS: I have no commercial links with the developers; this is an unsolicited opinion.

This is unquestionably an even greater deal.

RecentX is very useful. Also - I would HIGHLY recommend NoteZilla from the same folks - for keeping track of to-do items and planning your day. I also use NoteZilla for planning steps I need to do for simple projects on the job. NoteZilla is the best "sticky note" program I've ever used- and I've purchased many of them from other companies in the past.

I wholeheartedly recommend this and any other program developed by Conceptworld. RecentX saves me tons of time when I am working with multiple files for work. It lets me organize files in a hierarchical way and still get back to the documents I need very quickly. I also love that I can drag files from the RecentX window into email messages as attachments. The developer is also easily accessible when you have questions about their programs, even before purchasing a license.

I am a registered user of all of Conceptworld's programs, and I am not affiliated with them in any other way.

    Yes Julie,

RecentX works on Windows 7 (both 32 bit and 64 bit).

If you are the *only* user between 2 computers, then you can purchase just a single user license and use it on both the computers. Please note that this policy is applicable to a maximum of 2 computers only.

    Thanks for your appreciation.

OK, here's the final update on the problem i've experianced with recentx not logging my firefox history.
It did monitor my IE8 history so i thought there must have been a problem with firefox only. This was traced to the fact I'd used a different profile to the standard one. Recentx was looking at a profile i wasn't using (ie the dafault profile).
So, if you're using proiles you may need to contact Gautam for a 'fix' or make a request for recentx to be able to see which profile is the active one. Now, my history is being monitored as expected :)

    Hello Gautam

Thanks for your comments. Just to clarify: I have 13 weeks of URLS in IE7 history....and your comments indicate that Recent X can show them all now? So you have restored the capability to show more than the last 200 sites? This key feature was removed in the move from 2.0 to 3.0 I cannot find anything on your site that addresses this.

I have been waiting months for this to be restored. Per an email from the developer: "We understand your concern completely. And we will surely add a way to see the list by "Last week", "Last 2 weeks", "Last month" etc. Please give us few weeks. In September we will update RecentX with this feature (or bring back this feature :) ). "

Thanks! Would love to reinstall 3.0, it runs better than 2.0!

Unfortunately, no one's going to read the comments this late. Apart from the fact that I can't figure out why anyone running Vista or higher would want to use RecentX, since Vista, Windows Search 4 (download), and your browsers do this anyway, RecentX qualifies as EVIL MALWARE because it wipes historical and settings information from the Windows Registry when it executes.
  • Sep 24 2009 12:53am
    Gautam Jain (Conceptworld Corporation Vendor)
    Dear Frank,

None of these desktop search software give you a separate list of recently accessed files, folders, programs. They list all the files available on your computer, which makes searching & choosing slow. You may argue that you can sort by "date modified" or "date accessed". Unfortunately these dates (especially date accessed) are not accurate in Windows. It doesn't work the way the user expects.

It is much faster to locate a document in RecentX because it separates "recent/favorite files" from "all files".

RecentX lets you quickly drag and drop document from its window to your email client. It is very fast.

Also, you can perform some basic file operations very easily without opening any folders. Copy from Files view and paste it in Folders view. Cool it is.

And there is no software that automatically tracks folders that you access in real time. Folder access via RecentX saves a lot of time. You can directly jump to the required folder.

RecentX gets all the bookmarks and history from IE, Firefox, Opera & Chrome. Can any of your desktop search software do this?

To do all the above, RecentX needs delete some cache data from the registry. This is just a trivial data which the user will never ever need. It does not do any harm to the system. So RecentX cannot be labeled as malware.

    Thanks Frank.

I suggest that you use RecentX for some more time.

    Regards,
    Gautam Jain
