Audio Notetaker

Organize Audio Recordings Like Never Before

Remember that time you tried to record the most IMPORTANT lecture of your entire life, one that you absolutely needed to pass a course, get ahead at your job, or completely turn around your life? You didn't take notes on paper because you were recording, but when you tried to listen to your audio later, it was nearly impossible to organize. The important stuff you needed to know was dispersed throughout, and working your way through it, over and over, was tedious. Now's the time to give audio notes a second chance, though, with Audio Notetaker!

Audio Notetaker makes organizing recorded audio as easy as using pen and paper! With Audio Notetaker, recorded or imported audio is visually represented as a series of colored segments, letting you easily navigate, edit, and label important bits! You can, for example, go through a recorded lecture about wildlife and copy and paste all of the parts about koala bears together -- a critical research function for your term paper "Koala Bears: The Cuddly Menace"!

Important audio clips can be highlighted for easy reference -- even in real-time while you're recording! Plus, you can supplement the audio recordings with keyword-searchable written notes, Powerpoint slides, and images in the handy notes pane! Best of all, Audio Notetaker can export everything to a file that can play on your portable media player, for learning on the go!

J M anybody from the past BDJ offer is using this currently?
i wish to hear some brief review from the users here. Do you use this daily? Do you record from some external recorder? What use do you give to this app? Thanks!

M M What about recording VOIP? I would definitely buy it if I could record from Skype and Office Communicator, and make notes in paralel.

Eddie Tex @M M

I spent a few moments looking at the previous comments here on BDJ and the vendor's forum board on their website. This app records whatever can be heard through the microphone. However, it is NOT built to record sounds that are processed through the sound card out the speakers. Thus, it would not work with a Skype or OC call.

That said, this app is one-of-a-kind once you do have a sound file (*.mp3, *.wma, *.wav) that you'd like to process with notes through this application. If you haven't already done so, look at the video they provide. It does a nice job of walking you through it's capabilities.

I store up a number of MP3 files myself of lectures and sermons and am considering putting this to use myself.

I agree ANT looks exciting, but I frequently have 1.5 hour conf calls, from which I need just short moments, when I did not understand something, or would like to listen again to remember better. Processing such long recordings afterwards will take time, which I frequently do not have, and which I could save making the notes while listening.
If it were $10 or $15 I would not hesitate, but $60 is high price for me if functionality is limited. And I would be highly dissapointed to learn that I need to spend another $60 or more for the upgrade to the next version with VOIP capability.

This is the third time we've run a promotion on BDJ, so there are some comments from users who purchased first time around which you may find interesting.

@M M
VOIP recording functionality is something that people have been asking for and we are looking into. If you do purchase Audio Notetaker and then send me an email then I'd be happy to give you a beta version to test in exchange for feedback.

Michael R. I'm a a former buyer and heavy user of live-recording and I like it very much.

Because the recording with the built-in microphone makes too much noise with the vent, I'm now thinking about buying a cheap recorder / dictaphone to store some remarks on it. Beside the sound these devices also store the date/time on them. I think this is an often essential information for an audio-file.

So, is it possible for Autdio Notetaker to import all these created files of them at once in an open project and store each audio-file in a separate paragraph and let the date/time of each audio-file be visible somewhere, e.g. in the text-part of the audio-file?

Ideally this should be possible with as few manual work as possible.

Is there a certain standard these recorders should have for an optimal work-together with Audio Notetaker, so a potential dictaphone-buyer could check this before buying?

I just imported some audio-files(at once) from a directory on my harddisk. The audio-files were imported perfectly and also stored in different paragraphs, but I can't find the date/time information as information of all files somewhere inside AudioNotetaker. When clicking inside a paragraph, I find the original filename in the status-bar (together with the audio-duration), but I can't see any date/time.

In the windows-explorer, when selecting the file itself, I can see two date/time informations: creation and change-date/time.

Of course it would also be nice to have access to the tag-information an mp3-file has from within AudioNotetaker...

A nice feature could be e.g. to have a context-menu-option when clicking in the text-part of a paragraph allowing to paste the creation-date/time of the audio-file at the right side. And the same could be done e.g. for the tag-information. How date/time (or tag-information) is displayed could be configurable in the option-menu.

Thanks a lot...

M M @Dave Tucker,
That's sounds like a nice opportunity, but please clarify if you plan to add VOIP within current version (2.x), or would I need to buy ANT again? And if so, is it likely to work with various solutions (Skype, Microsoft's Office Communicator). My local currency again depreciated against the dollar due to global turmoil, which makes it even more expensive for me. Also, there is no discount for upgrades promised.
Sep 13 2011 at 1:49am
Dave Tucker @Michael R

Firstly, a good solution if you like live recording is just buying a decent external mic such as the Samson Go. If you do want to go for a digital recorder, then you'll want to get a Sony one with a 'T-mark' button or an Olympus with an 'index' button.

As for your comments, we can add functionality to see the metadata and date/time of an audio recording if we understand why it is useful and necessary. If you could email support@sonocent.com explaining what you use Audio Notetaker for and why this functionality would be useful we could consider adding it to our design.

@M M
The VOIP version should work with anything as long as you are running Vista or Windows 7. It won't be compatible with XP unfortunately. If you email us then you won't need to pay for an upgrade if it does require one, although I think it is unlikely that it will.

Michael Guilfoyle I have been searching high and low for a decent app to record everything - skype calls, dictating with dragon Naturally speaking etc. I especially want something I can record along with DNS so I can check what I said at a later time. I'd like to be able to run something in the background that just starts recording as soon as something is picked up on the microphone or VOIP and then I can go back and review later. Don't want to have to click start and stop - I don't want to have to think about it.

If Audio Notetaker is going to be able to do this I will buy it right away.

thanks

Dave Tucker @Michael Guilfoyle

It doesn't sound like Audio Notetaker will quite meet your needs in its current form. Audio Notetaker currently only records audio from an input source and not an output. There is also no feature for it to start recording when it picks up something from the input or output, although because it displays speech as bars and silence as gaps, it would be very easy to leave it on record and then visually see where you started talking. You can always delete the silences anyway.

As I said to @M M, we do have a VoIP recording version planned, which current users may beta test if they are interested.

bvssunnydale Hi, I have version 2 from bitsdujour from November 2010 [I have to admit I've never gotten around to installing it - my bad]. Is this the same version 2. Thanks very much.
Sep 14 2011 at 11:06am
James Kenney If I remember correctly the Sound Blaster Audigy has in input called something like "Everything I hear" and if this program lets you pick any input a device has, it would let you record anything that would be going out the speakers...
Sep 14 2011 at 11:57am
Eddie Tex @ James Kenney

I recall that feature as well back when I had an Audigy card. Since then, however, I have not seen that feature supported.

It's too bad b/c it sure came in handy when I needed it. Creative might still support that feature in their cards. I wouldn't know as I have gone away from them.

K X @ Dave

I bought Audio Notetaker during a previous Bits sale. I thought about trying Audio Notetaker for some foreign language studying. I imported a Greek mp3 and wanted to write my notes in Greek and English. I tried entering the Greek text with PopChar (featured recently on Bits), but I could not get it to work with Audio Notetaker.

Is it possible to look into this and tweak Audio Notetaker so it accepts input from PopChar so I can use it to input Greek and other foreign languages I study?
Sep 14 2011 at 1:32pm
Eddie Tex @ K X

I don't think it has nothing to do with PopChar. You're essentially looking for unicode support.

PopChar should work with anything that accepts unicode input.

I too dabble with Greek (and Hebrew)... unicode support is touch-and-go with various applications.
Sep 14 2011 at 2:13pm
Dave Tucker @bvssunnydale

It's not the same version, but all upgrades have been free so far, so there is no need to buy again.

@K X

You should have got in touch sooner! We use the MS rich text box and I know we support asian characters. Our development resources are quite pushed at the moment with the mac version, but we can definitely add it to the list of things to address! Please do email support@sonocent.com with ideas for improvements or when things don't work.

K X I've been using Audio Notetaker off and on since last fall, but really only this week did it occur to me that I could use it for language learning and transcribing some mp3 lessons I had downloading. Up till now I had used it for other sorts of recordings, other podcasts I needed to take notes for.

@ Eddie Tex

I'm starting to catch on to why in a lot of Bits threads one of the first questions is "Does this program support Unicode?" now that I'm trying to input languages other than English.

@ Eddie and @ Dave

Last night when I tried PopChar with Audio Notetaker, it didn't work. Today it does! And I have no idea what I might be doing differently, but I wanted to share the good news.
Sep 14 2011 at 8:13pm
M M Unable to pay with a credit card, using any of my private email addresses, because they are free, or just might be free! That's an overkill.
