Sometimes I can be too cautious for my own good. For years now, I've been using Copy and Paste to move files around on my PC, instead of Cut and Paste - as a result, I'm constantly leaving behind folders of identical files. The same is true when I email pictures - I export pictures to a folder on my desktop, then attach the contents of the folder to an email. The result? Duplicate copies of these big 5 meg photos in two places on my hard drive.
When I start to run out of space on my disk, it's easy enough to fire up the Add/Remove Programs utility and uninstall applications that I don't use. The only problem is, I know that most of my disk usage isn't held up by the applications themselves, it's the data files, drivers, and those pesky duplicate personal files and documents - and you and I both know that the uninstall always leaves stuff behind.
Thank goodness, then, for Duplicate File Finder Utility. When you run this handy little application it will scan your selected directories and list all of the duplicate versions of the same file. Duplicate File Finder Utility goes about this the smart way, too, by not only comparing file names, but also file sizes and, if the file sizes match as well, running a CHECKSUM algorithm to further investigate for differences.
When it's done, Duplicate File Finder Utility presents you with a list of duplicate files. To be sure, you can preview the duplicates just in case, and when you're satisfied, just delete them with a single click!
