David How is this different from an uninstaller program that takes a snapshot of your computer before you install a program?
Mar 22 at 6:19am
Joe Miller Hi David, It is very different. For example, you may be searching for some news article like a movie star or a rock star. Then, there is a link that looks very real and you clicked it. Bang, something happens to your computer because that is a hijack link that took over your browser. At this time, you wish you could turn the clock back but it was too late. With SafeShield on, all you have to do is to restart your computer and it goes back to the way it was before the hit. This is just one of the examples of the usefulness and protection you get from SafeShield.

David Isn't turning back the clock what system restore is supposed to do?
Mar 22 at 8:54am
Joe Miller First, it is what system restore "supposed to do". Just Google "system restore does not work" and you can see there have been many issues with that. For example, if there happens to be virus on your system and is captured by system restore, your AV will clean it out for you. However, once system restore is fixed in any way, it will no longer work. In addition, SafeShield goes beyond system restore. You can designate speciffic drives to go back to the way it was, say D drive or E drive and so on. So SafeShield is far beyond system restore.
FileStream, Inc. Vendor - Mar 22 at 9:40am
Joe Miller It is not limited to surfing the web. You can, for example, only want to protect your C drive and continue to use your D drive and have everything saved, that will work out just fine. You can also exclude folders on the drive that is otherwise protected.

Stefan Hauber Seems to be a quite useful program...

Will this run under upcoming win8 or will be a free update for a version which runs under win8?

Are there any plans for the future, e.g. let the changes optionally survive a new boot, which does make sense for testing applications, which require a computer-restart? As far as I see there were no updates a quite long time...
Mar 23 at 12:43am
Joe Miller Hi Stefan, You can select whether to protect OS only, which drives to protect and which folders on the protected drives to exclude. I do not have any information about update at this time. It has been quite stable and does what it is supposed to to so no update has not been needed.

Brian H Hi- how does this program differ from ones such as horizondatasys.com's "RollBack Rx"? Do they both preform the same function? Thanks. -Brian
Mar 23 at 11:36pm
Joe Miller Hi Brian, When a software promises "unlimited" snap shots, it is common sense that it will eventually eat up your storage capacity. FileStream SafeShield has an easy to use interface, it lets you select whether you want to protect your system (most common), or the entire C drive, or any other drives. For example, if you have more than one drive and all programs are installed on C and all documents are store on D, then it may make sense to only protect C drive because documents very rarely cause any problem. In addition, it lets you exclude folders on protected drives, For example, you want to protect your entire C drive but there are folders where you keep some information that you want to save and not to be rolled back when you restart and recover your system. You can exclude those folders. Finally, the price is right.

aladdin T Is your program like Rollback Rx or Time Freeze?

Which one?
Mar 25 at 12:15am
Joe Miller Hi aladdin, Neither. SafeShield not only protects your system, it also protects selected drives, and selected folders on any drive.

Robert SC Will this program protect the MBR and does it support multi-boot systems?
How does it compare to 'steady state'?

Caleb K I really want to buy your software but there's some annoying glitch that happens everytime - this is the 2nd time on BDJ. Pls rectify this:

Joe Miller Hi Robert SC, The answer to your question is Yes. As a matter of fact I am personally using it myself on my multiple boot system with 2 XPs, 2 Vistas, and 2 Win 7's (one 32- one 64-bit). You do need one license for each boot, however.
FileStream, Inc. Vendor - Mar 25 at 9:19am
Joe Miller Hi Caleb K, We are seeing orders coming in without any glitch. Do you have security software blocking some sites? What browser do you use? Your information will help us looking into what it might be.

E. Douglas Jensen How is this related to sandbox programs like SandBoxie?
Mar 25 at 11:04am
Joe Miller It is not related.
FileStream, Inc. Vendor - Mar 25 at 11:08am
E. Douglas Jensen It seems that sandbox software, like having a virtual PC, prevents contaminated virtual machines from infecting your real machine. You described your software as protecting some or all of one's machine. I don't get yet how your product and sandbox software differ in purpose and approach.
Mar 25 at 2:27pm
Joe Miller Hi E. Douglas Jensen, Thank you again for your post. I can tell you all about SafeShield, which creates a virtual copy of Windows for you to work on and leaves the original intact and restored when you restart your Windows. In addition to protecting your system, SafeShield also protects your documents. If you ever share your computer with anyone, you don't have to worry someone messes up your documents. It is best, however, that you find out all about Sandboxie at their site first hand. It appears that Sandboxie contains applications but not documents.
FileStream, Inc. Vendor - Mar 25 at 2:52pm
E. Douglas Jensen Ah, very helpful, thank you.

Robert SC Quote from Stefan Hauber:
"What if the new-installed software needs a reboot to complete it's installation. Quite a lot products do! Is there a way to let SShield do an exceptional reboot without redoing all changes made? "
Aug 2010

Any chance of this feature being implemented ?
Mar 25 at 4:25pm
Joe Miller Hi Robert SC, As previously replied, I do not have any information about update at this time.

Steven Avery Hi ,

Filestream SafeShield is explained at Wilders as being based on Returnil. http://www.wilderssecurit...p?t=276779 It is unclear whether it is a rebrand, or if they use the Returnil core and do value-added. Returnil gets a lot of discussion at Wilders.

One discussion about the differences of application at Raymond:
http://www.raymond.cc/for...boxie.html

One problem is that defining the operating system in Windows is not easy, and these programs try to address the many OS unprotected aspects. Some emphasize the ability to try out new software, others emphasize full malware protection. However, you always have overhead, and possible difficulties that arise, and there is always the issue of properly trying to save some stuff you do in the safe mode.

In my system I prefer to work with simply good HIPS and malware protection and solid data backups, to be ready for a reinstall if needed, preferably working with an early image.
