Image Your Hard Disk

Backing up your work is great - we really recommend it. But if your hard disk fails, you're still probably going to spend days reinstalling Windows and reinstalling and reconfiguring all your software. This is assuming, of course, that you had the foresight to backup all of your installation files and registration information.

A much easier way to protect yourself against hard disk failure is to image your hard disk. This process let's you take what is essentially a snapshot of your hard disk, and then restore that image to any hard drive with sufficient storage space.

For a critical process like this, you want the best software available. And fortunately, we've got it.

Folks, your Image for Windows purchase includes a cool companion application: OSD Tool Suite Professional! It contains a powerful script for modifying a windows installation that was restored to different hardware. It allows you to clean out the old drivers and install any necessary storage drivers so that they boot on the new hardware -- including physical to virtual and virtual to physical!

Not only will Image for Windows protect you against hard disk failure (and your hard disk is the part of your PC most likely to fail), having a disk imaging program also lets you replace your hard disk with a bigger, or faster, one, without reinstalling and reconfiguring everything.

Oh wait, there's more! An Image for Windows license includes full licenses for Image for DOS, Image for Linux, and a full license to use the OSD Tool Suite!

Tomasz Lisowski I owned a license of IFW since version 1. I really find it an indispensable tool, much easier to use than normal file-based backups, where you can suddenly realise that you have forgotten to put a particular file or folder on the list  ... Especially with the TBIView and TBIMount tools enabling you to look into the image file or even mount it as a drive letter!

I am only looking forward to BING 2 to emerge to catch up with the IFW version 2 format of the image files. Sometimes PhyLock driver fails during a lengthy backup - BING would not have such problems ...

I also have owned since V1 and it is equally indispensable. It's fast, dependable and I used it on 2 new PC's where I replaced the virgin drives and restored from the IFW backup before doing anything else. Now that's confidence in a purchased product.

Service is top notch, they answer in a flash and frequently tell you to read the doc, and it's frequently there. Wish all my 'payware' was this good.

PS: Don't know anything about upcoming BING 2, but if user wants to do a 'restricted state' backup because of Phylock, I think they still give you a free bootup version that would avoid that problem. (BING is great too)

Tomasz, although it seems that IfW is a great tool - what I wait for a long time is BING. Is BING 2 confirmed (link please)?

Sep 24 2010 at 11:13pm
Tomasz Lisowski Tomasz :-),

Yes, BING 2 is confirmed. See http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/webnews.htm and search the BootIt Next Generation newsgroup for "BING 2". Below I quote one of the messages from Terabyte Unlimited, where they confirm the date (late summer/early fall):

initially probably a sideways move (of course there will be differences),
but it gets rid of a bunch of restrictions that will allow new changes/stuff
going forward without any issues.

In fact, I would recommend you to buy a bundle of BING2
with IFW/IFD/IFL suite. BING would be more reliable at
restores, while IFW would be faster at imaging.

Dzieki za linka,

it would be nice to hear from TeraByte about their upgrade policy. I'm expecting BING in 2-3 weeks on BTJ (according to company's first appearance here). If I'm going to pay 18$ for BING here and in a month another 18$ for upgrade to BING 2, mabye I should concern wait a little and buy IfW and BING 2 bundle from their website. But it all depends on $.

not as sorry as I am :-( - but thx for the info. Ah, well.. Bright side is that I don't have to worry about TBU upgrade policy and my Christmas present (hope they manage to release BING 2 till Christmas) :-)
Sep 25 2010 at 2:16am
Roger Thomasson Haha, yes, BING 2 looks to be an exciting release!

Guy Good

I found this in a Terabyte newsgroup post dated 09-08-2010.
BootIt Next Generation V2 Update:

The next major update to BootIt (BootIt BM) is in progress and should be
released before the end of 2010.  This delay allows more time for testing
and additional features. The free upgrade period from BootIt Next Generation
to BootIt BM will be for purchases made on or after July 1, 2009 and 50% off
for purchases made before that date.

Yes, I've stumbled across this post yesterday too. I can't say anything about their support quality (didn't have opportunity to test it yet), but I've read some user experiences - and all where very positive. As for quality of BootIt NG - I've tested it extensively along with similar software (Paragon, Acronis) and in my opinion BING with it's ability of: imaging partitions, options to dynamically hide&unhide logic disc/partitions, standard partition operations and PRICE is THE BEST manager on the market. I was hoping to buy BING on BTJ for $18 - but I'll not wait until BING 2 appears here in a year. I'll just wait for BING 2 release - and I'm going to pay full price - it's worth that amount.
Sep 25 2010 at 8:20pm
Tomasz Lisowski @Tomasz Burger
Well, you don't need to wait :-) Just buy BING 1 now (or a bundle with IFW/IFD/IFL) and according to the Terabyte announcement quoted above you'll receive BING 2 free of charge, when it is released
Sep 25 2010 at 9:52pm
Tomasz Burger @Tomasz Lisowski
Well,
 1) expences above $20 require my wife's approval - proper timing is crucial :-)
2) but seriously - I would rather avoid installing BING v1 and then upgrading it to v2 - it's partitions I'm going to mess - easy to loose data.
I only hope TBU will not remove in BING v2 some features present in BING.

Jack Crawford Is it possible to run Image for Windows from an external USB device, or does it require Windows services etc?

TIA
Sep 27 2010 at 6:25pm
Tomasz Lisowski I believe you need to have IFW installed, as it relies on the PhyLock driver to be able to image the partition that might be written to during imaging.

I am not sure, but if you install Windows on the external USB drive and then boot from it, you should be able to run IFW from there. Anyway, IFW must be run from a running Windows operating system.

Third alternative is BartPE CD, where you could include IFW and its BartPE plugin, so that you could boot from BartPE and launch IFW from there, taking advantage of better I/O speed while in Windows (as compared to DOS, which relies on BIOS abilities).

There is a fourth solution: in the package you obtain also Image for DOS (IFD) and for Linux (IFL), which can be run from an appropriately prepared external USB device, e.g. using the Grub4Dos boot loader.

DrTeeth Technically brilliant app, support brilliant. Documentation poor IMHO, says a box enables a feature, then either does not explain the feature and/or does not explain when you should want to use it. Read the documentation before you buy.

After using Image for Windows for a few years, I have moved to a product that is just as good and 1000% more intuitive.
Sep 27 2010 at 8:44pm
Tomasz Lisowski For me one of the main advantages of IFW is its compatibility with BING, especially in the unlimited primary partitions scenario. Even though the currently running Windows OS may not see other partitions (Linux, other Windows operating systems, etc.), IFW can perfectly "see" them and image them correctly.

I have now Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit and Windows XP installed - all hidden one from another except from sharing a common data partition and a second one - encrypted using TrueCrypt. In addition to the laptop's recovery partition this gives 6 primary partitions in total, even though the natural BIOS limit is 4!

Now I can boot, say, Windows 7 64-bit OS and use IFW to image the system partition of Windows 7 32-bit OS (knowing that it is not being used at the moment!), even though the 64-bit Windows knows nothing about it!

Guy, is your alternative also compatible with EMBR? If not, I guess it can only image, what can be seen by the operating system. At least in my case, it is not enough, which is the main reason I am staying with IFW/BING combo. I admit, not everything is clearly explained in the documentation, but a lot of other resources can be found in the Terabyte Unlimited knowledgebase and support forums.

Gustavo Sanchez

Excellent software, buy it with no doubt, the easiest and most secure to use. Love it.

Sep 28 2010 at 2:12am
DrTeeth @ Tomasz

Compatibility is not needed as only four partitions per disk can be visible at one time...I also use BING with unlimited primaries and have no problems.

Chris F.

Long-time BING user here... however, I'm most curious about Guy's preferred alternative. Care to share it with us, Guy?

DrTeeth Macrium Reflect. They have a free version too and native 32 & 64 bit versions.
Sep 28 2010 at 8:05am
Albert C. Just a silly question: what advantages does this app have over let's say Acronis TIH? Thanks! ^_^
Sep 28 2010 at 8:41am
DrTeeth Advantages? There are three.

1) The tech support is amazing and fast. What TBU does not know about BIOSs and hard discs ain't work knowing.

2) The product works and works very well and is robust.

3) The tech support is brilliant.
Sep 28 2010 at 8:52am
Tomasz Lisowski @Guy: As I said above, IFW can see more than 4 partitions at a time and image them. The software, which is incompatible with EMBR cannot do this. Maybe not everyone needs this feature ... I do!

I need to take a look at Macrium Reflect that you have chosen. You made me curious :-)
Sep 28 2010 at 9:14am
DrTeeth @ Tomasz

That feature is useful, but I prefer to use my software and work around that.
